(Read a full report on this takeover on page 4).

There could have been no bet-ter kick-off for a successful HEROSE Sales Conference. The whole event at the Lindner Hotel next to the his-toric "Hamburger Michel" church had a decidedly sporting character for the 35 participants. ment: "With these, we are expanding our capacity in the prefabrication signifi-cantly. The investments are important in order to maintain our delivery perfor-mance. Unfortunately, there are currently bottlenecks that we have already identi-fied and will remedy as quickly as possi-ble." And HEROSE has not only invested in new machines: more employees have been recruited in the course of the year so that in the mean time, the number of colleagues has increased to a total of 280 in Bad Oldesloe.

Win the Future together: being one of the most urgent tasks for the next years, the HEROSE Managing Direc-tor Mr. Zschalich sees the creation of an improved exchange of information with the partners, a more intensive team work: "Those who want to play on the whole playground like our representa-tives – to keep with the jargon of our sales event – need more and better in-formation about the products, develop-ments and plans of HEROSE. That is our job. In return, we also hope for intensive information from our partners about pro-jects in their region concerning our target markets and target applications".

On the question where HEROSE con-siders the greatest challenges for the next years, Eike Dölschner says: "I can still see that we will also not be able to get around digitisation in all areas. That does not have to do with an end in itself, but should also provide an added value for the customer. And because we are speaking about the customer: we do not

only want to inspire our customers with our products, but also with our service."

Thematically, next to the classic indus-trial gases, HEROSE wants to deal more with mobility solutions. Eike Dölschner: "Here we particularly see our contribu-tion to the topic LNG as fuel for ships, overland transport or for power genera-tion. However, that could also be tank-ing systems for fuel cells with hydrogen /oxygen, possibly also tanking systems for rockets one day. However: with our know-how, we have many paths open to us, we only have to take them."

In work groups, under the modera-tion of the respective product manager discussions were carried out about the goals in the three market segments in which HEROSE is active.

CRYOGENIC market segment

Here, the valves of HEROSE shall continue to contribute to mastering the challenges of a clean environment. This applies to shipping in which HEROSE has already developed to a world-wide leading valve provider for LNG fuelled vessels. Coming up: decentralised energy supply concepts onshore where power is generated by using LNG. The gas required is stored cryogenically liquefied in the process.

There are also increasing demands for customized vacuum-insulated valves that guarantee a minimum heat input on the medium and thus the efficient transport over long distances through a pipeline.

INDUSTRY market segment

In this area, the product range for safety valves has been expanded. The series 06810/15 and 06850/55 are now awaiting a comprehensive sealing concept. These include metal sealings, soft-sealing plates and soft-sealing O-rings. With these options, the valves can be used for pressure protec-tion in the various applications – in the soft-sealing version, even for applica-tions highest requirements in tight-ness. Moreover, HEROSE has devel-oped a loose flange concept for its safety valves. The flanges are now avail-able in the sizes DN15 to DN50 and in pressure ratings up to PN250. They are now available with immediate effect. Flanges are always required where a high-er leak tightness is necessary between the individual components in process plants.

The loose flange concept also gives the customer the possibility of determining the adjustment of the valve individually.

ENERGY market segment

In this area, HEROSE is concentrating on the market penetration. The goal is to position the range of products for oil-immersed transformers at the respective manufacturers worldwide. The HEROSE range of products basically comprises all fittings that are required for the oil circulation in transformers. Moreover, customized special solutions can be rep-resented at any time.

Service optimised

The service department has been reorganised under the management of Matthias Reinhardt. According to the

principle "one face to the customer" future complaints will be managed in the central service for the entire processing and troubleshooting. Furthermore, with more main areas, HEROSE customer services shall be set up and offer: techni-cal training, commissioning and mainte-nance.

To allow HEROSE to present them-selves even better at trade fairs and cus-tomer visits, the HEROSE representatives shall be provided with new information and advertising material in the course of the convention. A motivation lecture and a visit to the factory in Bad Oldesloe rounds off the event.

The sporty conclusion of the event from Dirk Zschalich: "The training camp was a very successful – and from now on, success is all that counts on the field."

Manfred Kadner: Sport and ScandinaviaThe long-standing sales professional will be retiring at the end of the year

Last day on December 31st: then Man-fred Kadner will be retiring. The field salesman has then worked almost 20 months longer than he actually should have – at the latest that is just proof with which commitment the passionate sportsman had always considered his job. Manfred Kadner came to HEROSE in 2006. Next to customers in Northern Germany, Scandinavia and Finland were also his sales region. He had a major contribution that, in the mean time, LNG valves from HEROSE also have a lead in Northern Europe. Kadner: "At the most I am happy that after five years of inten-

sive work, I have managed to win the well-known Finnish company Wärtsilä – manufacturer of engines and LNG gas systems – as a customer for HEROSE in 2016."

Manfred Kadner paid a visit to his main customers up to three times a year. "I was travelling about 50 percent of my work time for this reason, but never found these trips as being annoying." Be-ing a nature enthusiast, he always took pleasure in taking a look to the left and right and has learned to appreciate the landscape and people of Scandinavia. However, he had never got to see the

Conquering the world with MackWhy HEROSE took the majority shareholding in the Australian valve producer. An interview with HEROSE managing director, Dirk Zschalich

Mack Valves is a valve manufacturer with a history of almost 80 years and two plants in Melbourne (Australia) and Pune (India). HEROSE now holds 51 % of the shares, while the other 49 % remain with the existing owner, the Indian Ador Group. vc spoke to Dirk Zschalich about the takeover and about the further expan-sion of the HEROSE Group.

vc: Why this undertaking that came as a surprise even to the experts?

Zschalich: Our investment in Mack Valves is a logical step along our road to the further expansion of the HEROSE Group. Mack provides not only additional pro-duction capacities in important growth re-gions, but also brings in a very interesting portfolio of its own products. Together we

What advantages can HEROSE and Mack Valves customers look forward to?

Zschalich: In short: Better service, better availability, punctual delivery and innova-tive products. Together we will generate synergies for our customers – including procurement, distribution and service. Of course that can only function as part of an interactive process and it will take time – but the kick-off from our side won’t be long in coming. And I’m looking forward to it.

are even closer to our worldwide custom-ers and can show a presence on many additional markets.

Why do HEROSE and Mack complement one another so well?

Zschalich: During our negotiations, we quickly realised that we share a common vision. We want to offer our customers the whole spectrum of products for cryogenic applications. That means not only gases for industry and, for example, the food-stuffs and health sector, but also LNG and hydrogen for transport by sea, land and in the air. Alternative energies are already in the process of significantly changing the rules of the game when it comes to mobil-ity – and both companies are outstand-ingly positioned in this sector.

Mack is furthermore an extremely cus-tomer-oriented company that is able to quickly bring new products to the market. Our new partner brings additional capaci-ties to growth markets, thus strengthen-ing our global supply chain – allowing us to be faster and closer to the customer. The newly added capacities in additional time zones on three continents also en-able our teams to develop and produce around the clock.

Scandinavian figurehead per se, the elk. "My friends have told me that I should be happy about that, they are much bigger than a horse – and heaven behold if they walk in front of your car."

Manfred Kadner is a sporty per-son. Tennis, bike riding, running, triathlon: over many years, Manfred Kad-ner was active in many disciplines in the company sports team of HEROSE. Sport will also be an important topic in the next stage of his life: "Maybe I will do a bike tour over the Alps or repeat the big tour of Europe from 1971 again by car. Only the VW Beetle with 34 HP is missing."

Technology

A modern office district was built in Ham-burg with the City Nord at the end of the 1960s. In order to the building with air conditioning, the "Fernkälte Geschäfts-stadt Nord GbR" was founded being the first German district cooling plant. Opera-tions manager Hans Weyerstall: "Our ring line through the City Nord is twelve kilo-metres long and has three lines, to which the 17 shareholders are connected."

One of the most distinctive buildings of the City Nord, the former postal check office – also popularly known as the Post Pyramid – is being demolished since July. Modern office and residential buildings will be created in its place, the so-called "Ipanema Project". Operations mana-ger Hans Weyerstall: "The postal check office was supplied with district cooling by line number 3. Due to the demolition, now we had to install a bypass around the supply line affected. We could not simply disconnect the line for a few days. As the other customers on line 3, amongst other the DEA still need cold around the clock, primarily for the IT systems."

As there are no gate valves installed in the lines, Weyerstall and his emplo-yees relied on the pipe freezing pro-cess. Weyerstall: "On the left and right side of the supply line to the old postal check office, we excavated one pit each

and mounted two freezing collars each locally around the two water-bearing pipes (diameter 500 mm)." Then – 196° cold nitrogen (LN2) was filled into the collars – with the result being that the water freezing completely after eight hours. Weyerstall: "Now we could open the valves in the bypass previously installed and the problem was solved." Pipe freezing is a domain of the en-gineering office Marx from the Bran-denburg town Ahrensfelde, that has specialised in low temperature techno-logy and gas applications. They were in-structed by the Fernkälte Geschäftsstadt Nord GbR for this project at the end of 2016. Owner Bodo Marx: "We had to keep to a tight time frame." According to the engineering office, the collars for the nitrogen with a length up to 1.5 m were made of stainless steel. The nitrogen tank had a volume of about 15,000 litres, safety valves and gate val-ves from HEROSE were used. The en-gineering office Marx and the company from Bad Oldesloe have been working together for more than five years where, in the mean time, the relationship goes far beyond a pure customer/supplier relati-onship. Bodo Marx runs seminars in Bad Oldesloe for the subject area cryogenic liquefaction at regular intervals.

The NSU TT is pretty stylish how it is standing in the morning sun on the field of Juhls hotel. Painted red and silver and in an immaculate condition, you really cannot see that the little cruiser is alrea-dy 45 years old. The starting signal for the Klingberg Classic Round Trip will fall in about a half an hour, an event of the ADAC, start and destination is Itzstedt in the district Segeberg.

His fist love

Hans-Jörn Stein who has been assem-bling cryogenic valves at HEROSE for 20 years is the proud owner of the NSU. The 63 year old has always been intere-sted in cars: "Over the past decades, I have driven all sorts of brands" said Hans-Jörn Stein, "From BMW to the good old VW Beetle." His first car was, however an NSU – and this first passion has been kept until today: "In 2010 by coincidence, I noticed an advert in the newspaper for the TT – and bought it on the spur of the moment." is what Stein remembered. Seven years ago, he took

part on his first vintage car rally with the car he had bought – and has stuck to it until today. It is not about high-speeds with this rally – the challenge has other reasons. Stein: "First you have to find the right route. That is the job of the passen-ger that has to interpret the route plan first, and then tells me where I have to take the turns. In-between, different special stages are waiting where, for example, we have to keep to an average speed over a certain specified route."

Member of the NSU IG

These challenges and the compani-onship between the drivers are the main reason why Hans-Jörn Stein and his long-standing partner Hans-Jürgen Bauer were pleased that they could participate on up to 20 rallies in Germany per season. „And on top of that, me being a qualified mechanic. I am naturally also have a delight in everything that has to do with technology“, said Stein, "the motorhead".

In addition, Hans-Jörn Stein is also a member of the NSU IG, an interest group with 500 members. "We meet each other once a year and keep in close contact otherwise." said Stein, "Which is very useful, especially for technical que-stions." The NSU TT is only taken out of the garage when we go to the races. For every-day traffic, Stein drives am Audi RS4, model year 2001 – no boring car off the shelf.

By the way: at the Klingberg Classics, Mr. Stein and Bauer reached the 4 th place under 43 participants.

With immediate eff ect, HEROSE has expanded its 0681X and 0685X series to include an O-ring variant. Compared to the previous soft seal-ing plate and the metal sealing variant, the new O-ring seal off ers improved tightness until the valve reacts. The O-ring is available in viton (FKM) and nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) making it cheaper than Vespel sealing plates. The seal is available for valve with the narrowest of fl ow cross-sections, in sizes from 10 mm to 18 mm. The seat tightness is defi ned in ac-cordance with API 527. Safety valves of types 06810/06815 and 06850/06855 with soft sealing O-ring off er zero bubble tightness with a reproducibility of up to 20 reaction cycles. A default

value of 10-3 mbar l/s is guaranteed for external tightness. The O-ring seal can be used for pressures of between 3 bar and 250 bar. The temperature limits depend on the medium and operating conditions. Our technical offi ce is able to test resistance under specifi c operat-ing conditions.

HDSV product groups 06810/06815 and 06850/06855 consist of valves with compact dimensions to safeguard against excess pressure and to divert small and medium mass fl ows of up to 17,000 m3/h (air). Thanks to a wide selec-tion of thread and fl ange connections, as well as various seat diameters, seal types and connection diameters, these can be used extremely fl exibly. n

n As a small thanks for the joint eff orts and success over the past months, during the lunch break, the management of HEROSE invited all employees to pamper themselves at a food truck.
