From the Editor’s Desk

Welcome to our third issue! We are thriving, have expanded to 18 countries! We are very excited with the response we have had. I am also finding that there are many companies out in the world that need a voice; either because they are up and coming, or they have a brand in a niche market, or they want to keep their advertising within modest realms. Know that our magazine will always have positive subjects, learning articles, and fashions that are true.

We are based out of Memphis TN, USA; however, we reach the entire world. We may have a few more of our contributing authors that come from the Memphis area, however, that doesn’t mean that you can’t submit an article. On this page we will also have an area specific piece of artwork. Most of these artists may be from the Memphis area. With the Mississippi River, Graceland, and numerous other beautiful places, we have many local artists that have great work.

We have three columnists now. Stacey Starks, California USA, will have an article each month on budgeting that can translate to budgets all over the world. Debra Norwood, Tennessee USA, will have a column each month on laughter (you won’t want to miss these!). Kally Efros, Arizona USA, will have an article each month on holistic and herbal wellness. Other columns that you can look forward to are Life Image-a monthly goal setting article complete with a printable page for you to use over and over; Cool Skin Tones/Warm Skin Tones-clothing and makeup set up for who wears it best; Great Finds-editor’s choice of great finds, can be clothing, makeup, skin care, household items; and Fashion Academy Endorsements-these are the products that have been tested by our consultants and found to be items with fantastic quality (a fee has been paid for the endorsement process, however, not for the endorsement, for the testing for every 10 that apply for an endorsement, 1 doesn’t get the endorsement).

Thanks for reading!Carolyn Bendall

Parents DO Understand By Stacey Starks

THERE WAS A SONG MANY YEARS AGO TITLED, “PARENTS JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND”, FROM THE FRESH PRINCEHIMSELF, WILL SMITH. For many of us teenagers at that time it was our anthem, and probably still rings true for many teenagers now, and in the many years to come. But the funny thing is, as we grow older, we are often struck with the truth, that yes, our parents DID understand. Tough love is just that, tough, and as a young, growing, immature kid, we can’t possibly fathom that our parents were once our age and learned a thing or two along the way.

With that said, I wanted to share with you a valuable learning lesson my sweet mom taught me. I don’t think she knew at the time how it would stick with me and help mold me to what I’ve become today.

It started in Junior High, I remember like it was yesterday. I was standing by the sliding glass window crying softly to myself, feeling sorry for myself, really, when my mom asked me what was wrong. I whined to her about not having a different pair of Levi’s to wear to school every day. (Levi’s were THE jeans in my day…am I giving away my age at this point?). Mind you, I wasn’t in need for anything. I didn’t have to wear hand-me-downs and I wasn’t wearing clothes with holes in them or even too-small shirts. No, I just wanted what everyone else had – a new outfit every day of every month. (Damn the peer pressure!). It was then, my wise mother said to me, “Honey, most of the people out there that you see driving really nice cars or wearing designer clothes all the time can’t afford it. They’re living outside of their means, on credit, and you don’t want to do that. Trust me, you will understand when you’re older.”

I never forgot that and it shocks my mom it stuck with me to this day. It really resonated when I embarked on my own away from the safety and shelter of home. Although in the early years I did get into some credit card debt, my mother’s words came back to haunt me. I realized first-hand how hard it was to pay off credit card balances when the interest kept the balance at a steady growth. I had to learn

by doing, and yes, MOM WAS RIGHT! It is humbling to live within one’s means, but oh so worth it! Not carrying a credit card balance is like walking your monkey on a leash instead of hauling that heavy monkey weight on your back!

P.S. Thank you, mom. Next article is ANOTHER dedication to you and your wise words.

Great Finds! Editor’s Choice on all products, honest information.

Compression socks, I know, not glamorous. However, on long rides or plane trips one’s legs do start to ache a bit, and no one likes swollen ankles. Soxxy is a new company that has designed a great line of fun compression socks. These socks are for those with circulation problems, or those that want to be able to walk after a long flight. To test them out I

wore them while at the computer all day. At the end of the day, my ankles were not swollen and I didn’t lie on the floor with my feet up on the couch (my usual evening ritual after a day sitting or on my feet). Yes, I am taking them on our road trip later this summer! http://soxxy.com/shop-soxxy/socks/compression-socks.html

Oh, it’s summer. OH, whose idea was it to make booty shorts? It was a bad idea and they need to stop. First a brief lesson in being hot (as in temperature), you need only expose your five heat points on your body to cool off: the top of your head, both wrists, and both ankles. There, booty shorts do not, I repeat, do not help you cool off. I was very frustrated trying to find shorts that came to my knees, or better, just below my knees (more like capris). My daughter said, “Mom, everyone goes to Kohl’s to get those!” So, I looked at my husband and said, “Kohl’s, now.” I walked out with one pair of shorts on (paid for) and one pair in the bag. That was last year. I’ve been back to Kohl’s already to get another pair. Kohl’s is definitely the place to find these hard to find items. www.kohls.com

I know I have already featured pants from the Bryn Walker collection, but, I have to do it again. I just have to. They are so amazingly comfortable, and airy for the humidity of the Southern United States, that I know there are people out there that need to get these pants! The flat front pant from Bryn Walker, available at Dillards.com (in case you do not have a Dillards near you) or at a BrynWalker.com you can find a flagship store or a boutique near you. These pants are lightweight linen, and throw then in the washer, then the dryer, then on your body. It really is that easy. I have them in black, and would NEVER think of getting them in white, but if you are slim and never spill anything ever, go for it. These pants are well worth the cost, and for a pair of designer pants, they are a good price.

There is a product out there that replaces all of your throw away cleaning materials. It also replaces your cleaning chemicals. That just took me for a loop. You do not need your furniture polish, you just need this cloth. I must admit, I missed the lemony smell after dusting; however, I didn’t miss adding several days on to when I would need to dust again. The Norwex products have magic in them. That’s the best way to describe it magic. Use it wet or dry, no cleaning products, just water. I Know!! You are amazed, right? Well, you will be even more amazed when those microfiber cloths clean up like no plain cloth you have ever seen! Just think, that many fewer chemicals in your home causing watery eyes, allergy attacks, and harsh smells. You have to know someone that sells Norwex to make a purchase, but it is well worth the extra steps to

make that happen. www.norwex.com

I love unique jewelry pieces. I love Boyer NY. The necklaces have a fish hook clasp. I like this clasp so much better than the lobster claw. They also have a wide range of clip earrings. I really, really like that. Those of us that lacks the courage to have someone stick an object in our ear lobe to create a hole are left without any options for cute earrings, 99% of the time. The quality is exceptional for this line of jewelry. It is a small company, so attention to detail is still very strong. Check them out! www.boyerny.com

THE THERAPEUTIC POWER OF A DUCHENNE SMILE

“1… 2… 3… CHEESE!” By Debra Norwood

IF YOU’RE LIKE MOST OF THE WESTERN WORLD, THIS CUE PROMPTS YOU TO TURN UP THE CORNERS OF YOUR MOUTH,“SMILING FOR THE CAMERA.” However, this smile says little about our actual feelings or happiness and

more about our cultural tendency to “fake it” for memory purposes. But what’s the real difference,

other than some abstract difference in feeling and emotion?

The difference between an artificial smile and a genuine

emotion-driven smile was discovered by French

physician Duchenne de Boulogne. While studying the

physiology of facial expressions in the mid-19th century,

Duchenne discerned two very different types of smiles.

The first involves only the zygomatic major muscle,

raising the corners of the mouth. This smile is a non-

Duchenne smile and reflects only the desire to be or

look happy.

The second smile uses the zygomatic major muscle, as

well as the orbicularis oculi muscle around the eyes,

raising both the corners of the mouth, as well as raising

the cheeks and forming crow’s feet around the eyes. You

guessed it! This is the genuine smile, the later-named

Duchenne smile.

Duchenne Smile (Continued)

Pop Quiz

Let’s take a quick quiz to test what we’ve learned so far! Which is the genuine smile?

In other words, in which picture does celebrity

chef and host Rachael Ray look genuinely

happy, rather than just flashing a smile for the

camera? That’s right: picture A is the Duchenne,

genuine smile. Notice how the eyes crinkle, and

the smile is guided by the drawing up of the

cheeks and corners of the mouth, rather than the grimace, or simple flashing of the teeth in picture B.

So how is the Duchenne smile related to therapeutic laughter?

The Power of a Duchenne Smile

During his studies, Duchenne stumbled upon the amazing power of genuine smiles, often found

between mothers and newborns or two people genuinely happy in love. These smiles produce feelings

of wellbeing and trigger empathy.

In fact, these genuine smiles serve as “windows to the future”–as predictors of the smiler’s longevity.

Those found smiling genuinely in yearbook photos in the 1950s were interviewed thirty years later and

showed a greater predisposition to health, leading to some early studies linking happiness and longer

lives.

Learning to smile even through difficult times helps the body perceive challenges differently. Debra

Norwood of Laughter Lawyer USA uses an interesting practice to help people who are ill or under stress

to trigger their brains into feeling the emotions of wellbeing, inducing a relaxed state or state of

heightened self-awareness.

She knows that there is no value in telling someone, “Smile! You’ll feel better!” Like so many well-

intentioned people do. Instead, she treats the person with respect, recognizing that maybe a laugh
