TREND watch Black is back in the kitchen, from benchtops and cabinetry to tapware and appliances

BenchtopsBlack benchtops are a sophisticated and luxurious choice in the kitchen, especially when paired with black cabinetry. Iconic Black is a true-black surface and the polished finish will give a glossy effect. For a natural stone-inspired look, try Eternal Marquina with dramatic white veining.

Design yourdream kitchen Five essential tips for planning a functional and efficient kitchen

1. Layout A functional and efficient kitchen is organised, accessible and ergonomic. Plan your kitchen with a fluid connection between the sink, refrigerator and cooktop, and plenty of bench space around the sink and cooktop for food preparation, cooking and washing up.

2. Storage Plan storage so that your most-used items are at hand and eye level to reduce bending over. Racks and trays will keep utensils and pantry goods orderly. Deep drawers or corner units are great for pots and pans, and sliding shelves make it easier to access items at the back of a cupboard.

3. AppliancesIdentify your essentials and your wish list. Cooktop, oven, fridge/freezer and rangehood should be high on the list, while smaller appliances, such as microwave or coffee machine, will be based on needs and lifestyle. Create a dedicated nook or bench space for these small appliances with power points nearby.

Bec and George, much-loved former contestants on The Block, renovated their 1950s house with the target buyer of a young family or professional couple that likes to entertain. “We wanted a clean, contemporary look with open-plan living, restored original details and high-end finishes,” Bec says.

With the kitchen serving as the heart of family life, the husband-and-wife team created a fresh, inviting space with durable surfaces and a hero feature: Dekton® Entzo benchtop and splashback. Inspired by Calacatta

marble, Dekton® Entzo has characteristic gold veining, which brings out the warmth of the restored Tasmanian oak flooring and is complemented by brass-handle accents.

Bec and George also used the high-performance surface as a backdrop to the laundry and for vanity benchtops in the classically modern black-and-white bathroom. “It looks great and is very durable,” Bec says.

The rear wall of the kitchen provides a tonal and textured backdrop to the open-plan living space with grey joinery,

The grey, white and metallic palette continues in the bathroom where Silestone® Blanco Zeus floats the timber vanity with nickelled taps and tiled wall behind.

Palace Supper ClubPalace Supper Club is an opulent world with materials and finishes you want to reach out and touch. We spoke to interior designer Carolyn Scott about the sumptuous and sophisticated space.

Q&A:Q: What was the aim of the project?

A: “The owners, Mark and Angela Rodrigues, named the venue Palace Supper Club and wanted an interior design and branding concept from beginning to end. The brief was eclectic, relaxed glamour for an interior that was fitting for a function space, bar and restaurant. The intention was to create a space where you could be anywhere in the world, from palaces to high-end hotels to intimate bars.

The venue is 700 square metres and has separate areas that provide different experiences for guests: intimate, encompassing, casual, luxury. I wanted the venue to have a visual and tactile experience, so that customers wanted to reach out and touch surfaces. Every touch point needed to have dimension and texture: velvet furnishings, antique mirror, brass detailing, pressed metal, chain chandeliers, mosaic tiles, marble-inspired surfaces.”

Q: Why did you select Dekton®?

A: “The first time I touched Dekton® I knew it was exactly what I was pursuing. As an inner-city venue, natural marble was not an option due to high traffic and spillage, so all the benefits of Dekton® were hard to ignore. Its resistance to heat, scratches, abrasions and stains ensures the venue will look amazing for years to come. As we had multiple applications for Dekton® – walls, bar, and bathroom floors – its availability in 8-millimetre and 12-millimetre thicknesses was also a huge advantage.

The matte finish of Aura 15 is like touching satin fabric, and the light background with grey and gold veining complemented the palette. The ladies’ bathroom stalls are also clad in Gada, a beautiful product that looks like natural stone. The Palace opened in September 2017 and the Dekton® surfaces are as perfect as the day they were installed.”


Bar“The 11-metre-long bar is clad with Dekton® to express the contemporary opulence of the venue. An antique mirror behind the bar reflects the bespoke brass-chain chandeliers, and the brass footrest around the base of the bar picks up the colour in the Dekton®. We designed brass-studded high-back bar stools in champagne-gold velvet with a contrast hand-dyed, hand-woven fabric that I sourced in Shanghai. The herringbone flooring is solid French parquetry finished with a Black Japan stain.”

Bathrooms“The owners wanted the most luxurious bathrooms in Brisbane. It needed a wow-factor floor to complement the gold mosaics and antique mirrors, so we had a stonemason cut the Dekton® slab into pieces and lay the Palace logo as brass stripping throughout.”

Be prepared:Before visiting a flooring retailer, follow this checklist:

Room measurements Draw a floor plan and mark where key elements are or will be. This includes kitchen or bathroom joinery, doors, windows and any other structural characteristics.
