Lovers of the popular comedy “The Game” had a grand time counting down to the long-awaited premiere on Tuesday night. After a two-year hia-

tus, the fourth season marked the return of a show that was cancelled by the CW Network. This did not go down well with the fans, many of whom filed petitions. The show was later picked up by BET, but what was so special about it that many continuously watched the syndicated reruns? For some, it’s captivating and authentic and as close to real life as any TV-series can get. In essence, there was at least one charac-ter that we can relate to or have come in contact with some-one similar at one point in our lives.

Many of us loved Seinfeld, Friends and That 70’s Show, but since the Fresh Price of Bel-Air, and more recently Girlfriends, this is one of the very few that has seemingly managed to garner grassroots support. Nonetheless, we have to give it up to “The Game” creator Mara Brock Akil, because football aside, the relationship and life-changing issues faced by each character is not sugarcoated, which makes them real and re-latable. We’ve seen it all: From “Malik” being a momma’s boy to “Med School” aka “Melanie” who gave up her opportu-nity to attend one of the best medical schools in the United States, Johns Hopkins University, to support her pro athlete boyfriend. Now, how many of us can recall sacrificing some-thing for our lifelong partner? I’m sure too many to count,

and that’s what has spurred the love and the petitions of the audience to see this series make its return.

Though there have been mixed emotions about the long-awaited and anticipated debut, we can all come to a con-sensus that the dramatic ending to the one-hour special has us all wanting more. Naturally, we can’t wait for the second episode to see what will happen next. One complaint that was consistent with many viewers was the lack of humour, but the drama and suspense was at its peak. Also, many said they thought the writers went overboard with the opening episode because they are trying to outdo themselves. This leaves us to wonder if the shoe left from the first three sea-sons is too big to fill, or is it that creators of the show have spoiled their audience and now they are expecting too much? Then again, maybe it’s even too early to call from just one episode.

All that aside, when the verdict was revealed last Wednesday, it came as no surprise that “The Game” raked in 7.7 million viewers, which gave BET its biggest audience for a scripted series. Indeed, an impressive victory for a series. “Don’t call it a comeback!”

s I entered the premises of the Barbican Shopping Center I ran into Car-olyn Yapp; we both arrived at the same time for the interview. Though

clad in a chiffon mini skirt and white t-shirt, she was indeed dressed for work, which is one of the main reasons why she loves what she does. The former Miss Jamaica Universe beauty queen is now owner of Nlyorac Beauty Bar, a beauty and fashion store which caters to the needs of women. In this inter-view, she takes us into her world; from talking about the transition to being persistent and her plans for the future.

For Carolyn, being an entrepreneur is not a great departure from what she’s used to. “I have always had it in me before I was entering pageants, and while I was at the University of West Indies I studied Management Studies and Hu-man Resource Management,” she says. This, she believes, has undoubtedly helped her in becoming an entrepreneur. Whereas most people tend to be-lieve that the typical beauty queen is not very headstrong and, in general, just sees the glitz and glamour of pageantry, Carolyn acknowledges that all this goes well together since her business is about selling beauty products and services. “For me it’s easy, I take in all that I learned, even though at times it’s very hard to prove to people that I’m a serious business woman,” she says.

To those looking on from the outside, it would be hard to see what propelled Carolyn to enter the Miss Jamaica pageant a third time after placing second and third respectively in 2007 and 2005. “I’m very goal-oriented and I really don’t care what anybody wants to say. If I did, I wouldn’t have entered the pageant again,” she explains. Even though there were criticisms to the ef-fect that she cared only about getting a crown, and even cynicism concerning whether she will enter ‘Ms. Festival Queen’ or ‘Tastee Talent contest’, Caro-lyn says entering was a goal she had set out to achieve.

“There is a saying that says if at first you don’t succeed then try and try again,” she says, in explanation. What she has learned from entering these pageants are lifelong lessons which she has carried into her everyday life. Interacting with so many beautiful women from across the world with various personalities has prepared her to face any type of customer. Nonetheless, she believes in taking chances while she is young, since there is always the opportunity to bounce back.

Never fazed by the naysayers, everything worked out in her favour. “I believe what a lot of young women fail to do is they don’t take in what they should from the pageant and that is using it as a stepping stone to achieve something else. For me, it wasn’t just about being Miss Jamaica, I didn’t just want to win; I knew that it would have helped me with every other dream I have.” Most entrepreneurs testify that the first year of business is the most difficult, and while Carolyn agrees wholeheartedly, her first year has been great and she has no complaints. “There have been times when things are down, but I came up with the idea of selling goods and services that people do not normally receive in Jamaica; from using the fully professional Dermalogica line to selling products like Moroccanoil, but apart from the high quality products that we offer, the customer service is great.” This diva is no hands off boss, as she does all the facials and sometimes waxing, having been trained professionally by The Face Place.

Focused and determined as “Nlyorac” approaches its one year anniversary this February, she considers herself a workaholic because even when she is out at a party, she is constantly promoting herself and her beauty bar. Carolyn operates on the mantra that customer service is key and will go the extra mile to make sure her customers are satisfied. “Most of the products that I carry are high end products used by A listers and my customers love the fact that they get value for their

money. When they come here they leave feeling happy, not just because of the products they bought, but because of the entire atmosphere that we provide; it’s usually like a party,” she shares. That aside, when she is not working, this ‘fash-ionista’ enjoys partying with friends or sleeping as a means of relaxation. “Sleep is very important so that your body is not rundown,” says Carolyn as she laughed.

While Carolyn loves “Nlyorac Beauty Bar”, the thought of growing it for sale to the right bidder is considered a viable option, since solely operating this company is not necessar-ily something she sees herself doing in another five year or more. She believes that there is so much out there to ac-complish. “My main area of studies is interior designing; I designed the store, so I think I want to pursue that. I don’t really want to be stuck in one profession or one job for the rest of my life, I want to be moving and learning new things,” explains Carolyn.

Watch out Montego Bay, because this hometown girl might just have something in mind for you pretty soon.
