COMMITTEE DESCRIPTIONSMember Success – Organizes activities designed to help our business members succeed and grow in the Johnston community. We offer professional development and networking activities through workshops, lunch and learn events and other activities to help our members achieve their business goals

Communications – We are working to strengthen communications among our members and the community. This will be accomplished through improvements in our website, advertising for Green Days, expanded information in our monthly newsletter and the creation of new channels of communications.

Teacher Appreciation – Organizes the Annual Educator Appreciation Event that is held for the Johnston School District in May.

Green Days- Organizes the Annual Johnston Green Days festival that is held in June.

Golf Outing- Organizes the Annual Golf Outing that is held in August.

Ambassadors – This committee connects members with their Chamber. The committee will visit member businesses, mentor new businesses and communicate Chamber events and activities.

CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS

Johnston is governed by the Johnston City Council, which consists of a mayor and five city council members elected at-large. The City Council meets for a regular meeting on the first and third Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at Johnston City Hall, 6221 Merle Hay Road. A work session is typically held at 6 p.m., prior to the regular council meeting, for council members to receive information and discuss city programs and operations in greater depth. All meetings are open to the public.Boards and CommissionsThe mayor and city council have authority to appoint Johnston residents to city boards and commissions. Car Seat Inspection — A certified child safety restraint technician is available by appointment to answer questions or assist in installing a child safety restraint system.

C.A.R.E. — Register your loved one, adult or child, who suffers from a physical or mental condition that impairs their ability to communicate when separated from their caregiver. Personal information and a photo are kept on file so lost persons can be reunited.

Crime-Free Business Program — Upon request, the police department provides Johnston businesses with workplace safety training and security

assessments to include dealing with irate customers, family violence, disgruntled employees, hostile intruders and robbery protocols.

Crime-Free Multi-Housing Program — This crime prevention program is tailored for rental properties of all sizes. The goal of the program is to reduce criminal activity in rental properties. It also addresses crime prevention through environmental design (C.P.T.E.D.) and includes a crime free social gathering to bring residents, building management and police together to collaborate on safety principles to build a partnership committed to keeping tenants safe.

E-LERT — By participating in the E-LERT program, residents can help play a vital role in the department’s ongoing community policing efforts. Once registered, residents and business owners receive public safety information via e-mail.

Neighborhood Watch — Through regular meetings and communication, neighborhood residents are provided with ideas and suggestions, such as keeping garage doors closed to reduce break-ins and other timely topics, as part of this community safety program.

School Resource Officer — The City of Johnston and Johnston Community School District work in partnership to provide two school resource officers. One primarily works at the middle and high school levels. The other is stationed at the Summit Middle School and provides the Code 411 Instruction to fifth, seventh and ninth grade students.

Vacation Watch — Leaving town for an extended period of time? Johnston Community School District serves approximately 6,900 students, pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The district has seen increasing enrollments each year since 1984, for a yearly growth average of approximately 150 students per year. The district is composed of five preK-5 elementary schools, one 6-7 middle school, one 8-9 middle school, one 10-12 high school, and one 9-12 alternative high school, shared with surrounding metro schools. Elementary class sizes average 20-26 students, while secondary class sizes average 25-27 students. JCSD is the 14th largest school district in Iowa, with a total budget of $84.5 million. The district covers a 40 square mile area, and serves families from Johnston, and parts of Urbandale, Des Moines, Grimes, and Granger. Johnston Community School District is the fourth-largest employer in Johnston, with approximately 1,000 contracted employees.
