short breaks in Croydon

about short breaks
Short breaks are when you have a break
from your family. Sometimes a short break
is like a holiday away from home. Short
breaks help you and your family carers
have a rest. Another word for short breaks
is respite.
about Croydon’s short breaks service
Heatherway is a house where adults with a
learning disability go for short breaks.
It has space for 5 people.
People can stay at Heatherway if the
council says they need a short break.
The council says
how long they can stay
how often they can stay
3
The council owns and runs Heatherway.
The Care Quality Commission checks to
make sure it looks after people well and
keeps them safe.
The Care Quality Commission last did a
check in February 2017. The check
showed that Heatherway does a good job.
staying at Heatherway
During the week Heatherway is closed from
11 to 3pm. People have to do different things
during the day.
At the weekend Heatherway is open all day.
At the moment people can only stay at
Heatherway for 1 week at a time.
Every other week Heatherway is just for
people with lots of needs. Then it only has
space for up to 3 people.

about this consultation
A consultation is when you talk to
people to find out what they think
about something.
In November 2016 we started asking
people about Heatherway.
We talked to people who stay at Heatherway.
We talked to their family carers too.
We asked
what is good about Heatherway?
what is bad about Heatherway?
what other short breaks do you want?
November

We wrote a report about Heatherway. The
report says what it costs to run
Heatherway and if it is as good as other
short breaks.
You can see our report here
www.croydon.gov.uk/respitereview
We are sorry but it is not in easy read.
Now we want you to help us decide what
to do about Heatherway and short breaks
in Croydon.
There are 4 ideas to choose from.
We want to know
what you think of the 4 ideas
how they will make things change
for you
your own ideas for what to do

problems with Heatherway
These are things you have told us
it is closed during the day
this means family carers do not get a
proper break
you can only stay for 1 week at a time
it gets booked up
you cannot always stay there in an
emergency
family carers find it hard to book time at
Heatherway that fits in with their work
and holidays
there is only 1 room for someone in a
wheelchair
Heatherway is old and not big enough
for some people to use
most people who stay there do not need
to be looked after
They could have a different type of
break
8
not many people use Heatherway or
they do not stay long
young people who stay at Heatherway
find it boring
people want more choice about how
they have a break
Heatherway costs a lot too.
We want to use our money well and offer
more short break choices that a lot of
people can use.

ideas for the future
We know that the Croydon short breaks
service needs changing. We are not going
to leave things as they are. There are 4
ideas for the future of short breaks and
Heatherway. We want to know what you
think about them.
idea 1
We will stop using Heatherway for short
breaks and offer short breaks that fit each
person better
and
change Heatherway into homes where
people with learning disabilities can live
with support.
We think there should be different short
breaks for people to choose from. People
can choose the things that fit them and
their family carers the best.
10
We want to use Heatherway as homes for
people with learning disabilities to live with
support. We need more places for people
to live in Croydon.
idea 2
We will stop using Heatherway for short
breaks and offer short breaks that fit each
person better
but
we will not change Heatherway into homes
for people with learning disabilities.
We will not use it for short breaks any more.
This is like idea 1. We will have different
short breaks for people to choose from.
The council would think about a different
way to use Heatherway.
11
idea 3
We will spend money on making
Heatherway better and keep
having short breaks there
and
change how we do short breaks
This idea would cost a lot of money and
take a long time to happen. The council
would work out how long it would take.
idea 4
This is where you can tell us your own
ideas for the future of short breaks in
Croydon.
12
examples of different short breaks
a short break at home with a support
worker coming in to look after you
a holiday away with family or friends
using a special holiday company
or with your own support worker
support to go out and do things you
enjoy. This could be learning
something new, doing a sport,
cooking and so on
staying with another family for a short
time
staying at a different care home for
a short time
