DOUBLES EXPOSURETIMES IN THE NORTHPyrad Arctic Protection
Pyrad Arctic Protection is a brandnew type of workwear that allowsplatform workers in arctic regionsto stay outdoors twice as long astoday’s clothing.
The Norwegian petroleum industry is steadily movingnorth, and this shift presents a significant challenge, which soon became top priority for our product de-velopers in Måndalen: The combination of low tempe-ratures and strong winds will make safe and ef ficientworking operations even more challenging than in theNorth Sea.
in the last year, we have together with SINTEF, Statonand Eni Norge, sent test subjects in and out of physio-logical chambers - where temperatures are lowerthan -25oC - to investigate what is required to keepplatform workers in these northern regions stay warmenough. Evolving prototypes have been tested inactual platform working conditions.
The result of the research project, which was suppor-ted by the Research Council of Norway, is a brandnew collection.
Pyrad Arctic Protection comprises a jacket, trousersand boots made in a Gore-Tex Pyrad material with20% higher tear strengths than the previous Pyrad. Itremains waterproof and breathable, and is the lightestelectric-arc approved shell layer on the market. Usertests and laboratory tests at SINTEF, document thatthose working on platforms in the arctic regionscan remain outside twice as long with Pyrad ArcticProtection, compared with today’s clothing. The newgarments allow you to use less mid-layer clothinggiving you greater comfort and more freedom ofmovement, with a higher lever of protection.

CHOOES THE CORRECT WORKWEAR
Wearing the correct underwear andmid layers increase comfort and enhances the protection against multiple hazards.
Your working environment, level of activity and climate will all determine which underwear and mid layers should be used. Our base layer collection is therefore adapted to any work environment, whet-her it be a summer road project or a rig operating in an Arctic winter gale.
To provide the right protection when risk is at its hig-hest, we offer anti-flame underwear and mid layers. Manufactured by Devold® Protection and when worn in combination with Wenaas flame retardant workwear, offer enhanced protection.
Like Wenaas, Devold® is actively engaged in rese-arch and testing. This research work has taken us to North Carolina State University USA, for the so-called Manikin Burn Test. In this test, a manikin is fitted with 150 heat sensors and was dressed in the Wenaas Offshore range together with underwear. The manikin is then exposed to a flash fire for four seconds.
The sensors measure the transfer of heat to the skin tissue and predicts the level of 2nd or 3rd degree burns. The results provide an indication of the level of burns on the body, where 50% entails a large risk of life getting lost.
The Wenaas Offshore range was first tested in combi-nation with cotton underwear, then with the Devold® Spirit flame retardant underwear. The results showed that wearing the Devold® flame retardant underwear reduces the extent of 2nd and 3rd degree burns signi-ficantly compared to standard cotton underwear.
In addition to burns there may also be scolding injuries due to moisture. It is therefore extremely important to wear flame retardant underwear that has good moisture transportation properties.

ESD ESD stands for electrostatic discharge. Electrically conductive footwear must be used whenever it is necessary to minimize electrostatic discharges in the shortest possible time, e.g. if there is a risk of destroying electronic equipment. ESD footwear is antistatic. However, if you get an electric shock while wearing ESD footwear, the current will go straight through your body. ESD footwear is primarily made to preserve fine pitch electronics, not to protect the worker. Electrically conductive footwear must not be worn if there is the slightest risk of getting an electric shock from the live parts of electrical appliances. Products marked ESD fulfill current requirements and standards for ESD. In order for ESD footwear to work in a satisfactory manner, both the personal protective equipment and the workplace must divert static electricity.
