INTRODUCTION
How much we look forward to popping those sweet, white coloured pills? We think of it as the sweet cure to the biter
illness. When the tried and tested allopathic treatment doesn’t cure well, we go for the closest, which is homeopathy to cure it all. It may take some time, but results are assured with discipline and restraint.
The Society of Homeopaths describes the science behind the sweet pills as remedy that uses ‘like with like’ principle. A substance that causes symptoms when taken in large quantities can actually cure the symptoms when taken in minute amounts. This principle can be traced back to the era where Hippocrates (460-377BC) lived. Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of Homeopathy, “Father of Experimental Pharma-cology” lived in Germany where he formulated medicines based on the law of “Like Cures Like” more than 200 years ago.

WHY HOMEOPATHY?
In India, the study of homeopathy is well rec-ognized and regulated by authorities. Depart-ment of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy,

India is home to an overwhelming number of homeopaths with figures touching over five lakhs. Increasing demand among Indian patients is viewed as the main cause for the spurt in the number of professionals. WHAT AFTER GRADUATION?
B HMS degree holders take up postgrad-uate studies to specialize in the range of illnesses homeopathy can cure. As
explained by Prof Dr. Mansoor Ali KR, Govt. Homeopathic Medical College, Calicut, “Two specialisations, paediatrics and psychiatry, have gained popularity among students”
The increasing acceptability of homeopathy as innocuous cure to flu, common cold has trig-gered its popularity among children. “Serpentine queues of mothers with infants inside my clinic makes many think that I am a paediatrician,” laughs Dr. Rahul Tewari, a private practitioner in Delhi.
“The armoury of homeopathic drugs is very huge. Allopaths still prescribe a list of less than 200 drugs, whereas homeopaths have to deal
THE PLUS POINT IS THAT YOU CAN START PRACTISING AS A HOMEOPATH IMMEDIATELY AFTER GRADUATION

INDUSTRY TALK
Dr Valavan,Manager Scientific Affairs,
Schwabe India
Schwabe is the only MNC operating in the field of homoeopathic manu-facturing. It entered India when the demand for its products shot up. Dr
Valavan reviews the expansion and job outlook.
Q: Do you feel that homeopathy is picking up in India? A: Absolutely! The ASSOCHAM yearly report reveals it all – in 2007, there were about 40-50 million people who opted for homeopathy. And in 2011, the figure jumped to 100-120 million.
Q: Making homeopathic drugs are tougher than allopathy. Is this true? A: Yes, we prepare drugs in serial dilutions. To make a drug of 200 potency, correspondingly we have to undergo 200 steps to achieve the potency. (50,000 potency = 50,000 steps, 100,000 potency = 100,000 steps).
Q: Pharma companies employ BHMS grads. Tell us about verticals and salary range. A: Pharma companies values at least 18 months’ experience. The hierarchy is similar to any corporate company - Officer/Asst/Deputy/General Manager & Director. Homeopaths are hired in R & D, product development, manufac-turing, marketing and sales departments. Entry-level salary of fresher is Rs. 10,000 to 15,000 per month. As your experience increases, it can go up from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 100,000 per month.

Q: Any recent breakthrough. A: There have been many ground breaking experiments in homeopathy. Research done by IIT Bombay has revealed that homeopathy pills work on the principle of nanotechnology. Homeopathic pills made of metals (gold, copper, iron) retain their potency even when diluted to a nanometre or one-billionth of a metre
