Macedonian people always say that life without experience is unused life. Every young person must take all opportunities that life offers to him/her. I had one of them, thanks to Erasmus+ student exchange programme, studying at one of the most prestigious Universities in the Republic of Poland, AGH UST in Krakow. The program allowed me to live my life above limits, meeting new people and their cultures that after a while became my family, exploring new places and upgrading my education to a higher level. Erasmus is not one year in your life but your life in one year.

I am Rouhollah Kian Ara from Iran. I am a doctoral (PhD) student at the Faculty of Computer Science, Electronics and Telecommunications at the AGH University of Science and Technology. AGH UST is a fantastic university, renowned for academic excellence – the teaching is world-class, which allows me to learn something new and build on the skills and knowledge have already gained during my previous studies. Krakow is a great city with kind people, so this contributed to my decision to study at this university too.

Discover the Magic of Krakow!

I'm from Mexico from Instituto Politecnico Nacional and I came to study at AGH UST within SMILE Programme. Krakow is a really beautiful city. What I really enjoy about Krakow is its security because all the people respect you and you can go alone with no problems at all. It's a very nice place to meet new people because in Krakow everybody is very open-minded and willing to share their experiences with you. In fact, it is the ideal place to come if you are from Latin America and you are looking for a nice place to stay, take part in SMILE Program, Krakow is the ideal place for you.

Campus lifeAll of AGH UST buildings are located in one district in the centre of Krakow and cover the area of 38 ha. An integral part of the university complex is the largest student campus in Poland, the AGH UST Student Campus (in Polish: Miasteczko Studenckie AGH), covering the area of 13 ha.

Student dormitories ensure comfortable living conditions – access to the Internet, special

places for learning, facilities for the disabled, TV rooms, and club rooms. Regular renovations

and refurbishments are made to keep the rooms standard at a high level. The student

campus offers over 8,000 beds in 20 student dormitories. In July, August, and September,

the AGH UST Student Campus becomes the largest summer hostel in Krakow.

AGH UST students are represented by the University Board of Student Government, which

organises the legendary annual student festival, Juwenalia. There are about 360 cultural events

held in 5 student clubs, as well as many scientific and sporting events organized every yeat at

the university campus. The university also hosts the University Board of Doctoral Students’

Government, the AGH UST Independent Students’ Union, and the AGH UST Section of Erasmus

Student Network (ESN), which supports international students at each stage of their stay.

The AGH UST campus is located in the heart of Krakow. The AGH UST Main Building is only

1 kilometre away from the Main Market Square, hence it is possible to walk the distance

in a few minutes. Getting to the Main Railway Station in Krakow, thanks to an extensive

network of trams and buses, takes only 10 minutes, and getting to the John Paul II

International Airport Krakow-Balice about 30 minutes.

I’m an Erasmus + student for one year in Krakow, at the AGH University of Science and Technology. This big campus that the University offers is a great place for students with a lot of activities. Playing football, basketball, volleyball, tennis is usual here. Then, you can also spend some time with your friends because there are a couple of bars and restaurants. I really like to be here, it gathers many students from everywhere and you can meet many different cultures. This adventure is something incredible and I’m sure that I will miss it when I leave Miasteczko Studenckie AGH.

The student campus has a modern football pitch, volleyball and basketball courts with

artificial surfaces and tennis courts. A very modern AGH UST Swimming Pool is another

great advantage of the campus. A close neighbourhood of the Krakow Błonia Park and

Park Jordana allows runners, joggers, cyclists, and roller skaters to spend time actively in

picturesque areas of the city.

I am Mubashir Javed from Pakistan. I came to Poland within UNESCO Poland Co-sponsored Fellowship Program 2015A, as a Junior Research Assistant at the AGH University of Science and Technology. I have learnt that AGH UST is equipped with state of the art laboratory facilities, offering technical courses, supported by a laboratory demonstration. I was lucky enough to continue my studies at the second-cycle degree studies of Electrical Engineering at AGH UST. I am glad that I have chosen that university. Professors at AGH UST are very experienced, they encourage us to come up with new ideas and guide us in the best possible way. During my stay in Krakow I gained experience to communicate with people from different cultural backgrounds on regular basis. All in all, I recommend AGH UST to people who would like to develop their knowledge and improve their interpersonal skills. I love my choice, I love my campus, I love my AGH UST!

My name is Damarys and I came to Poland all the way from Venezuela and I was able to do it thanks to SMILE Programme, which is an exchange programme that links Latin America with the rest of the world; something like Latin Erasmus. In Latin America we don’t have so many scholarships and exchange programmes as in Europe and a lot of people from our countries don’t even know that SMILE exists and all the opportunities this programme offers. Please, students from Latin America, go right now to International Departments of your universities and ask about it!

Legal arrangements – useful information

30

Once you have been accepted as an international student to AGH UST, you have to start arranging other legal requirements that will enable your stay in Poland.

Visa

In case a candidate has been accepted to the university by the Rector of AGH UST, on the candidate’s request the university can issue an official letter to the embassy informing about the fact of the candidate’s acceptance, as well as the conditions of formal/final registration. Please remember to make sure that you meet other requirements from the Embassy.

Temporary Residence Permit If you are a non-EU citizen, this document allows you to stay in Poland for the period of no more than three years (after that you have to reapply for the Permit).

REMEMBERMake sure you collect all necessary documents before you leave your country!

Please remember that you have to:• apply for the Permit before your Visa expires,

• fill in an Application Form and submit all necessary documents to Malopolska Provincional Office in Krakow (see: www.malopolska.uw.gov.pl),

• prove that you have sufficient funds to cover your stay in Poland (e.g. with the bank statement),

Insurance You need to possess:

– a disease and accident insurance policy covering the period of your education in Poland, or

– the European Health Insurance Card, or

– the insurance taken out from the Polish National Health Fund (NFZ),

immediately upon your arrival (or at least at the beginning of your degree programme).

Please remember that:

• It is one of your responsibilities as an international student to make sure that you have valid insurance during your entire stay at AGH UST.

• You will be responsible for covering all insurance costs.

• If you opt for insurance against consequences of accidents and the cost of medical treatment, you will have to pay for any/all doctor’s appointments not covered by your insurance policy (such as allergies, flu and/or other medical conditions).

• Joining the Polish National Health Fund will allow your doctor’s appointments to be free of charge but will not entitle you to any personal injuries compensations in the case of an accident or the need for hospital treatment.

Financial security You need to possess sufficient funds to cover the cost of living on the territory of the Republic of Poland, the cost of return to your home country, and the documents confirming your ability to be in possession of such means.

Centre for International Students will provide you with all the necessary help (and in case you need a Polish-speaking guide, we will ask a Polish student to help you with the formalities), but you need to bear in mind that most legal arrangements require your personal contact.

IMPORTANT On the student’s request, AGH UST can pay monthly premiums to the National Health Fund for those insured students who possess either a valid Card of the Pole (Karta Polaka) or they are of Polish descent.

Adapter Adaptation Programme

On the one hand, student life is a

period of the so-called “happy freedom”,

the beginning of independence and

making first important and binding

decisions in life but, on the other hand,

it can become an extremely difficult

time. Therefore, the AGH University of

Science and Technology in Krakow has

decided to help students beginning

their programmes of study at the

university. In order to support them,

the Department of Education has

launched an adaptation programme

ADAPTER, the goal of which is to

take care of young people during the

adaptation process in their first years

at AGH UST.

The aim of the programme is to

help students to adapt to the new

environment without a feeling of

alienation and fear.

The language of instruction is Polish. More information can be found on the website
