Anne Griffiths, fromChildwall, still has decorationsfrom her own childhood in the1950s. She said: “Each yearanother one usually falls off thetree and gets smashed; they arereally fragile, coloured glassbaubles, which were my mums.”
To make up for the ones sheloses she replaces each onesparingly. “Rather than buy moredecorations every Christmas I tryto buy just one or two each year,”she said. “I found some beautifulchina decorations a few years agoin Cheshire Oaks and it’s started atradition in the family. Mydaughters also buy one each and soevery year our trees have an extradecoration, which has thought andmeaning attached to it.”
Jenny Hickson, who worksin financial literacy for CitizensAdvice in Garston, is currentlyplanning budgeting sessions forChristmas. Said Jenny: “Beingfrugal at Christmas is not aboutrestricting yourself, anddwelling on the things you can’tbuy. It’s more about beingcreative in the ways you giveand show how much you careabout your family and friends.”
Some of the ideas she has thoughtup and promotes during herChristmas sessions include:
� Filling as big a box as you canfind with blown up balloons. Asthey open the box differentcoloured balloons will pop outand hopefully provide an hourof fun (though probably betterfor younger children).
� Personalised emergency kits forfriends. This could be a pictureframe containing a voucher for amassage, facial or day out.
� Sitting down and working outyour budget over the next fourweeks, rather than buyingeverything in one go helps tofocus the mind on how muchyou realistically have to spendthis year.
� Saving money on the essentialscan free up money for fun things.Jenny even advises people to checktheir fuel suppliers and the tariffthey are on as soon as possible, incase there is any chance of savingmoney this month.
� Christmas shaped cookies andeven orange and lemon peelingscan look lovely on your tree andthey are really cheap to make.
� Unique selections to choose from
� Christmas tree farms help to sustain rural economy and provide jobs
� A tree is planted for each one harvested to ensure a steady supply each year
� Fresh scent
� They do not need to be watered and the needles will not drop off and make a mess in your house

personal album. We have all gone intogether; there is a strong vibe oftogetherness in the studio. Open Eye Gallery has beenone of the UK’s leadingphotography spaces since1977, and is the only gallerydedicated to photography inthe North West of England. Itsre-launch this Novemberreinforces Open Eye’s position
as one of the mostsignificant exhibitorsand collectors ofphotography in theUK.
The mainexhibition gallerieson the ground floorshowcase aninternationalprogramme ofcutting-edge
contemporary photography,opening with award-winning,New York based photographerMitch Epstein’s acclaimedAmerican Power series.
The first floor of the gallerywill house a series ofexhibitions drawn from therichness of the gallery’sarchives, launching withMagnum photographer ChrisSteele-Perkins’ The PleasurePrinciple, while the gallery’sexterior wall will be used forlarge-scale ‘Wall Work’commissioned pieces, the firstbeing a striking new artworkby S Mark Gubb.
