Your Local Lincs Welcome

Hello and welcome to the August issue of Your Local Lincs Magazine.

As we go to print there is a rumour that we will see an end to this terrible weather! Let’s hope that sunshine is on the way!

Currently I am getting ready to take my son Joel to the USA for his life changing surgery this summer. I go with a complete mix of emotions but I also know that it will all be worth it as Joel will become more able bodied. I will be keeping a blog regularly of Joel’s progress which can be viewed at www.joelsquest.co.uk.

Our fundraising efforts are not yet complete as we will need to raise funds to help towards Joel’s aftercare and equipment. Currently we have raised £41,000! I would like to extend our thanks to the community for all your support so far, we have been overwhelmed.

In the magazine this month we have some great ideas for days out for kids that won’t cost you the earth and are hosting a fabulous competition that could go to anyone’s head! We have also made way for the gorgeous Diva Parties that are definitely fit for any princess! August is fastly becoming a month of kindness as we have had a number of fundraising events brought to our attention that are vintage- page 51, fun- page 56, relaxing- page 61 and most importantly are for some great causes! So whether it continues to rain

or begins to shine, the spirit of August is a bright one and we hope you have a superb summer whatever you choose to do!

Diva parties

Are you looking for an original, fun and safe party idea? Maybe you’re trying to organise a birthday party for a pre-teen,

a pre-prom party or perhaps even, looking for a fun hen party idea?

Sharon Mallinson from Symply Photography a well established photographer (and well practiced party animal) based in Billingborough has recently launched a brand new party experience ideal for girls of all ages (min age 8). If you are trying to find an original party idea, why not come and join us for a Diva Portrait Party?

Diva Portrait Parties are a completely new and different idea for girls (or boys!) and their friends in and around Sleaford, Grantham, Boston or Bourne.

Whether it’s an 8th birthday party, entering your teens or a Super Sweet 16, or just want a fun night out with the girls - this is a glamorous photo-shoot with a difference. Feel like Lincolnshire’s next top model and party like a WAG.

We can cater for up to 10 guests and are happy to tailor your party to be as individual and fun as you are.

Maybe start with a makeover, then after your fashion style photo shoot in our professional studio, enjoy our very own Party Bar with music, disco lights, nibbles or cocktails and party food. Perhaps even relax and gossip in the hot-tub. We can even arrange for a limo to come and whisk you home in style!

Every guest gets a mounted photo gift to take home, and the party host her very own framed magazine cover – featuring her favourite image from the shoot! All of the images from the shoot can be viewed or purchased (not obligatory!) afterwards on our password protected website.

So stop wondering how to celebrate - be the envy of your friends and call us to see how we can make your Diva Portrait Party special.

Vamp Hair Salon welcome

all ages of clientele!

Jo Fish and Marian Rose, opened Vamp Hair in August 2011. Both Jo and Marian have over 20 years individual experience in hairdressing and are

a good team as they have been friends ever since they met one another at school, aged 14.

Combine their experience and friendly, relaxed salon with their extensive training in hair, from levels 2 and 3 at college up to barbering and masterclasses and it is clear to see the excellent hairdressing experience they offer.

Jo and Marian love to pass on their knowledge to new trainees and stylists who work with

them. Since opening, Charlotte Cook and Niki Kirk have joined the Vamp Hair team. Charlotte has 3 years’ experience and trained at Lincoln college and Niki has been in the hair industry for over 20 years.

Newly joining Vamp in August is Natalie Watson as she starts her training and Chris Allaway, formerly from Mint Hair Salon.

Chris has 14 years’ experience and started his career at Strand Management with in salon training. Chris has also added to his career Toni and Guy courses in Classic and Advanced cutting and Wella courses that he is attending.

Oktoberfest 2012Last year saw the first ever

Sleaford Oktoberfest hosted by Sleaford &

District Round Table. Not only was it a very

popular beer and music festival but it also raised a substantial sum for local charities. Plans are now well under way for this year’s event with 13 bands already confirmed Including Glass Onion, Ultra 90’s and The Forever Test to name but a few, all of which you can check out on our web site at www.SleafordOktoberfest.com This year we will continue to support local breweries within our selection of 30 real ales and will be extending our range of ciders due to the popular demand last year. We will again be offering a free local pick up service to enable you to get to the rugby club for free. This year we will be using the Round Table Community Minibus that was partly funded by last year’s event. Any community groups wishing to make use of the minibus for other events should check the details on our web site www.SleafordRoundTable.co.uk

The dates for this year’s event are Friday 5th October 6pm until midnight and Saturday 6th October 12 noon until midnight at Sleaford rugby club. Under 18’s are very welcome on the Saturday from 12 noon until 6pm, a selection of activities will be available to keep them occupied. We look forward to seeing you there.

Introducing Bill Hopkinson, the private physiotherapist. Establishing his practice Physio Solutions in 2011, Bill, with his 26

years of NHS experience decided to work in the private sector with his own mobile physiotherapy service.

Bill previously worked as an out-patient physiotherapist working in Sleaford at Laundon House Clinic and he took referrals from hospitals in Lincoln, Boston, Grantham, Peterborough, Nottingham and GP referrals.

Physio Solutions currently treats: All joint conditions, soft tissue injuries, sports injuries, spinal conditions (back/ neck/ thoracic/ whiplash), fractures, all post operative procedures, Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis, growing pains, repetitive strain injuries, heel pain and foot problems, shin splints, Sacroiliac joint, groin strain, Carpal tunnel syndrome, Postural problems, jaw pain, chest physiotherapy, amputations, strokes and other symptoms such as migraines, headaches and irritable bowel syndrome.

Bill uses a wide range of physiotherapy techniques, including manipulation. The treatment principles of the practice are holistic – in other words, the whole person. A thorough assessment is essential to identify the root cause – early diagnosis and effective intervention make the biggest difference to a successful outcome. Bill is keen that every patient should be given the knowledge and understanding of their condition to prevent problems recurring, equipping everyone with the ability to self manage should the pain return in the future. A self help strategy for lasting benefit is the ultimate goal.

Remember, the quicker a problem is diagnosed and treated, the better the outcome.

Home appointments are available Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 4.30pm and special arrangements can be made if necessary.

Initial appointments take approximately 45 to 60 minutes for a complete assessment and first treatment. Subsequent follow up appointments take 30 minutes.Initial assessment and first treatment: £35Follow up treatments: £32 www.physiosolutionsclinic.co.uk Tel: 01529 307216 or 07757 773674

Keeping Informed

Vetting is a mixture of experience and new knowledge. Our governing body the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons requires that all of us work

on the latter if we are to continue as practicing veterinary surgeons. So last week it was back to school for me to indulge in what is apparently called CPD (Continuing Professional Development) to get as much new knowledge as I could. There was a mood of general enthusiasm amongst the delegates on the subject of vet matters. The mix of young enthusiasm and aged experience is infectious and uplifting.

The lectures ranged from abdominal and thoracic surgery to internal medicine and cat waterworks......these were all were really useful and full of new knowledge and tips. Pets particularly young dogs eat all sorts of silly things well outside the spectrum of sensible food and these things do untold damage when they get stuck. Chest surgery is always a bit scary as one has to breathe for the dog during the operation and restore the integrity of the chest post surgery. It is still within the capability of the general vet in practice and not always a referral case to our specialist colleagues.

Chronic vomiting in a cat can be as simple as a bunch of occult roundworms who manage to escape detection and a simple solution maybe just to worm the cat. Major investigations possibly could be avoided by regular worming. The array of medication in tablets and spot ons make this easy nowadays.

Renal disease in cats and the need for blood pressure assessment plus cystitis is a common area of concern in practice and there seem to be few new ideas on the subject. The outcome was as usual to increase water intake, as cats are poor drinkers and to look at the behavioural interactions within the home. Someone suggested Evian but I don’t think that was quite the idea.....

“Parvo” was discussed in detail. Treatment protocols are available and the success rates are improving. Lots of ideas were put forward to improve the survival rates. Yes “survival rates”. It is still a nasty disease with an uncertain outcome. Better avoided. Again vaccination is much easier and less stressful for the pet. The disease flourishes in areas where the take up on vaccination is low.

It was really quite an intense conference but fun, stimulating and makes one feel invigorated and raring to get back to work !

Caring for elderly petsJust like us humans, our pets age, and just like humans, as

they age they become susceptible to more ailments. Check your pet regularly for changes in behaviour

or appearance that could indicate the onset of illness or disease. Reduced activity could be a sign that your pet is in pain, perhaps due to arthritis. This can be eased by gentle massage, but dogs also need to continue to exercise in order to keep the joints free, although too much exercise can cause more harm than good. If they’re less active, your pet might gain weight - resulting in additional health

problems. This can be remedied by decreasing their calorie intake. Some elderly pets experience a loss of appetite – perhaps due to a reduction in their sense of taste or smell - that

could result in weight loss. Encourage eating by offering smaller meals more regularly, by gently warming the food and by ensuring it is fresh. Your pet also needs a quiet, undisturbed place to eat. Older pets are more susceptible to heart and lung disease. Signs include coughing, wheezing, breathing difficulties and general weakness. Bumps, lumps and swellings may indicate cancer and if your pet becomes incontinent or starts to urinate more frequently, this could be due to changes in the urinary tract, prostrate or other body systems. Of course, not all conditions are life-threatening. Ear infections are common in dogs and signs include a discharge from the ear, persistent head shaking and pawing. It’s not all doom and gloom! Ageing is part of life, and with lots of love, care, patience and regular visits to the vet, there is no reason why you and your pet shouldn’t enjoy getting old together!

Rauceby War Years Weekend 25th to 27th august 2012

The Mid Lincs Military Vehicle Trust (MVT) is holding its fourth War Years Weekend on 25th-27th August. Exhibitions and activities

will include living history displays, re-enactors in many different uniforms, a large selection of military vehicles and classic cars and stalls selling vintage military and civilian wares.

In the arena, there will be a staged battle each day, vehicle parades and demonstrations involving the public. In the main marquee on Saturday night (26th August), there will be a 1940s dance, with entertainment from singer Katie Lancaster, supported by ENSA entertainer Paul Harper and DJ UXB, all backed by the ever popular DJ Major Swing. Tickets for the dance are £8. However, there will be free entertainment on Friday and Sunday nights The marquee will also be used for various events over the weekend, including ‘40s fashion shows, hairdressing demonstrations (have your hair done ‘40s style for the evening dance), and dance lessons and demonstrations. It’s hoped that, weather permitting, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will

perform a flypast.There will

be plenty of entertainment for children, with an old fashioned funfair, motorised mini jeeps and participation events, such as Grenade throwing andrifle drill boot camp.

There will be a wide selection of food available, including an authentic 1940s NAAFI selling homemade wartime sandwiches and cakes (unfortunately not at 1940s prices!). The bar will be selling a range of real ales and other drinks to quench your thirst.

Entry is £5 per person, per day. Admission is free for MVT Members, veterans and accompanied children aged 12 and under. The War Years weekend promises to be a great family event. There is also an educational element, as World War II forms part of the national curriculum. So dig out your outfits from the loft or track down some vintage clothes, get dressed up and be part of this grand weekend and help raise money for good causes whilst having lots of fun!

The Mid Lincs MVT is a non-profit- making group and all money raised (after expenses) will be donated to the Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance, Royal British Legion and Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Please visit our website www.raucebywarweekend.co.uk or call 01529 488354 for more information about the Mid Lincs MVT and the War Years Weekend.

The closer you get to retirement the greater

the need to talk to us

Retirement is something we all look forward to and, even if it

seems a long way off, the crucial question is

‘Do you have enough saved for a comfortable retirement?’

Whatever the answer, it’s not too late to boost your retirement

savings. The closer you get to retiring the greater the need to

preserve your savings and ensure they will last all through your

retirement.

We can help you assess whether you need to

make changes to your investments as you

approach retirement.

Investing in non-pension savings will enable

you to use these to supplement your pension

income - and still provide access to your money if you need it.

Having the right mix of investments will help your savings outpace

inflation, something I’ve been warning people about for a number

of years.

If you’re approaching retirement, you’ll generally be able to take up

to 25 per cent of your pension fund as a tax-free lump sum. This

could be used to supplement your retirement income by reinvesting

in a flexible investment.

Wherever you are with your retirement savings, don’t be put off

from taking action - there are still steps you could

take to boost the income you’ll get when you retire.

How much to pay yourself?

As the director and shareholder of your own company you can decide how much salary to pay yourself each month, in

order to use your personal allowance in the most tax efficient way. As a director of your personal company you do not have to pay yourself the national minimum wage unless you have an employment contract with your company.

From 6 April 2012 the tax free personal allowance is £675 per month (£8,105 per year), so you could take a salary at that level and pay no income tax. However, the monthly thresholds for paying class 1 national insurance (NI) are: £634 for employees and £624 for employers. If your salary is £675 gross per month, your company needs to deduct NI of £4.92 and pay employer’s NI of £7.04 on top.

If you take a lower salary of just over the NI lower earnings threshold of £464 per month you will get the NI credit, so your wages count towards your state pension entitlement, but you don’t pay any tax or NI and neither does the company. However, at that annual salary level

(£5,568) you will be ‘wasting’ £2,537 of your tax free personal allowance. At £624 per month there will be no NI to pay and you only have £617 of unused personal allowance, so this is likely to be more beneficial.

As a director’s salary is an allowable expense for Corporation Tax purposes it is usually beneficial to pay yourself a salary. The correct procedures also need to be in place when paying a salary and your other sources of income need to be taken into account, as you may be using your personal allowance elsewhere.

If you need any advice about your salary level or need help with any other tax matter please contact Simon Moss on 01529 302111 or email [email protected]

‘For a truly outstanding, professional, friendly andvalue for money service’

Why is it so important to talk about dying?

Although someone in Britain dies every minute, many people risk leaving a proper mess behind for those close to them

because of their reluctance to talk about dying, death and bereavement and to make end of life plans.

A new research by ComRes released in May this year, found that although more than half of us (54%) have been bereaved in the last five years, discussing dying and making end of life plans still remains a taboo subject for many. Yet despite our reluctance to talk many people can see the benefits of more open discussion about dying: 78% of the public and 88% of GPs agree that if people in Britain felt more comfortable discussing dying, death and bereavement it would be easier to have our end of life wishes met.

The research also found that just over a quarter of people have discussed with a family member about their end of life wishes but less than a third have talked to someone about their own end of life wishes.

Amazingly, only 37% of the public have written a Will and only a mere 8% have prepared Lasting Power of Attorneys should they become unable to make decisions for themselves in the future.

Despite the reluctance of many to discuss end of life issues or set out their wishes, most people do have serious concerns about it. 82% of people said they would be concerned about being a burden on those close to them if they were dying, and nearly three in four would be concerned about what would happen to their family after their death.

Talking about dying is rarely easy, but unless all of us become more adept at doing so it’s hard to see how we will get our wishes met when we are alive or avoid leaving a mess for those who have been bereaved. Writing a Will is of paramount importance, but we really need to go beyond this if we are to get our wishes met when we’re alive, including about how and where we want to be cared for when the time comes.

People in my profession have a key role to play

here, not least by engaging with clients who want Wills, Lasting Power of Attorneys or an Advance Decision (Living Will) by not shying away from conversations that are often upsetting and difficult.

Putting as much information as possible into these documents and stating your wishes in the most articulate manner can spare your carers, attorneys, executors and successors the distress of sorting out what is best for you and what you leave behind. It can also help answer immediate questions such as the type of care and treatment you prefer and whether you wish to be buried or cremated, or where you wish to be laid to rest.

In my experience where there are no clear wishes, this leaves the Executor, attorney or nearest relative to make these decisions and in many cases the family do not all agree, which results in a very challenging and stressful situation indeed.

Community NewsVintage Evening that Is Not to Be Missed!

Vintage. What does that word mean to you? To Sara Rogan-Mackintosh, it means something very special. A theme that is knitted into her fabric,

Sara goes gaga for all things fifties style! The simple but colourful house ware and furniture, the voluminous skirts complete with netted petticoats and rock and roll twist and shout comfort and fondness as they remind Sara of her beloved Nan.

So when Quinn, Sara’s three year old little boy, was diagnosed with Leukaemia in August 2009, Sara turned his hospital room into a slice of home to cheer him up and add those homely fifties touches. This vintage hospital room was the first of many as Quinn’s fight with Leukaemia continued with patch work and Cath Kidston mugs covering everywhere they went from Boston to Glasgow.

There are some great children’s charities that have really supported Quinn, Sara and the family through Quinn’s on-going battle with Leukaemia and its effects. To say thank you in the best way possible, Sara is holding a very Vintage Evening, keeping Quinn’s journey and her passion for vintage at the heart of their giving back to those who have helped them. Quinn is due to finish his Chemotherapy in October and only then will find out if his cancer has gone into remission. In the meantime Sara and her family want to say thank you. So join her on September 22nd at 7pm for a fabulous evening filled with fashion, including a fashion show, stalls, raffles, Burlesque dancers, home made cakes, Tombolas and a cheeky cocktail or two!

Community NewsAshby De La Launde: Britain’s Friendliest Street?

Tesco launched a competition to find Britian’s friendliest street, voted for by the public. Local people from around the country nominated

their streets and stated their cases, the list was then narrowed down to six streets: Gateshead in Fife, Railway Terrace in Tyne and Wear, Stafford Road in Tunbridge Wells, Rockingham Drive in Wigham, Thorton Le Street in Yorkshire and Main Street in Lincolnshire’s very own Ashby De La Launde.

So what was it that pushed Ashby into the country’s top six? After speaking to Val Smith, the Ashby resident who nominated the village, it became very clear as to why.

Pulling together for the benefit of the village and its residents is part of the Ashby village’s ethos, the village hall and church parish sustain one another through sharing their limited funds to keep each other afloat, so that both places are able to continue to provide both

facilities and events for the village. When an elderly resident was taken into hospital

with carbon monoxide posioning, the people of Ashby gathered together to clear and clean his house so that it was safe for him to return to after he was discharged from hospital. On return from hospital the locals of Ashby made sure that he was looked out for.

If that was not enough, amazingly, Ashby’s residents have access to the fastest broadband internet in the country! This is not down to luck of the draw, however, it is through a large collective effort and agreed decision to dig through local farmland to make the channels for the fibre optic wires to be installed. Ashby was a “not spot” for broadband, leaving the residents without any internet access at all.

What an inspiration it is that the little village without any internet now has the fastest in the country through hard work and a shared goal! It highlights the strong community spirit Ashby has and makes it very clear as to why it reached the nation’s top six!

Infant swimming classes have never been as fun as with Puddle Ducks.Thousands of babies and children nationwide enjoy our small, structuredswimming classes every week; developing from water babies into confident swimmers without even realising that they are learning to swim.

Puddle Ducks Make a Splash

With over 200,000 children leaving primary school each year without basic skills needed to survive in water, it highlights the importance of learning to swim as soon

as it is possible.Puddle Ducks are making this possible with their specially

designed swimming programme for small babies and new borns. It is a great way to bond with your baby and gets them off to a good start. The swimming programme that Puddle Ducks offer gives a range of benefits to babies such as strengthening your baby’s heart, lungs and respiratory system; the development of higher brain functions, core muscles and the chance to develop co-ordination skills far earlier than if they had not swam as a baby. The great news for new parents is that regular swimming will improve your babies eating and sleeping patterns too! Swimming as a baby also gives total physical freedom, massage and gentle exercise to your baby as well as eye and skin contact and the opportunity to socialise with other babies.

It’s a great idea to instil a love of water into your child from an earlier age as often the longer getting into the water takes, the greater the challenge can become for a child. So why not take your baby down to Puddle Ducks? Afterall, small splashes lead to big waves!

For more information visit our website www.puddleducks.com or to find a class designed especially for you contact Nicola on 01949 831322 or [email protected].

Kierans going for gold!

In our July issue we interviewed discus star, Kieran Tscherniawsky, who had dreams of making it into the Paralympic

games. We are pleased to confirm that Kieran has qualified and been accepted into the Paralympic London 2012 games! Competing on September 7th at 19:00pm, Kieran is dreaming of gold! Currently positioned at second place in his category (F33) Kieran is only 94cm from the breaking world record any discus athlete in the F32, F33 or F34 categories have previosuly thrown in distance! Commenting on Kieran’s reaction to the fantastic news, his grandmother, Molly Burrows, said: “I wish I had had a video camera! He was ecstatic!”

Kieran has got this far because of his consistant hard work. However, training is costly and currently Kieran’s family are carrying the financial burden alone. If you would like to sponsor Kieran, please get in touch with us at Your Local Lincs and we will put you in contact with Kieran and his family.

Help the Ally Cadence trust to help Others

Sleaford Historic car & motorcycle show 2012

Behind every charity and trust is a story that has brought to light a great need. For Emma and Karl Humphries, the diagnosis of their 6 month old

daughter to type 1 Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) was the start of a difficult journey.

After Ally’s diagnosis Karl and Emma received such little external support that shortly after Ally’s death, only twelve days after the initial diagnosis, they decided to help other families that faced similar circumstances. Seven months later and the Ally Cadence trust was born to provide the support for others that Emma and Karl themselves had needed.

Babies with SMA have a life expectancy of eight months, every moment counts, showing why the support is needed straight away. With one in every 40 people being a carrier of SMA, a child with two parents carrying the SMA gene has a one in four chance of being affected. This shows the scale of support needed to families up and down the UK who are dealing with SMA and these are the people that Emma and Karl want so much to reach through the Ally Cadence Trust. Do you want to help? You can show your support by going along to the fundraising events below.

Sleaford playhouseSleaford Little theatre presents - StEEL MAgNOLIAS By Robert Harling

Steel Magnolias is a bittersweet comedy drama which tells the

story of six women, Truvy, Clairee, Ouiser, M’Lynn, Shelby and Annelle who are great friends and share a strong bond. They all live in Chinquapin, a small town in Louisiana USA, where they love to catch up with all the local news, gossip and exchange insults at Truvy’s beauty parlour, where ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done! A combination of weddings, births, a magnolia tree, beauty pageants, secret pasts and a fallen ‘Miss Merry Christmas’ combine to bring laughter to even the most hardened soul.

However, their bond further deepens when tragedy strikes and their core strengths, humour and spirit are called upon to support them through the difficult and challenging events they face. Tears are mixed with laughter as the ladies discover their own touching and distinctive ways of coping.

Robert Harling wrote this warm-hearted and sentimental play as a form of therapy following the death of his sister from diabetes.

In 2010 over 5000 deaths in the UK were due to suicide compared to less than 2000by death on the road! We need tostart to make a difference in ourcommunity and YOU can help!By attending the 2 day AppliedSuicide Interventions Skills TrainingCourse (ASIST) you will learn howto:• Spot the signs that someone may

be having thoughts of suicide.• Have confidence not to miss,

dismiss or avoid these signs.• Be ready, willing and able to apply

‘suicide first aid’.• Keep the person safe by creating a

safeplan.• Connect them to other resources.Contact us now to arrange your freetraining and make a difference inyour community by helping toreduce the high rates of suicide.
