Stay Safe on the road this winterAs the winter weather approaches, now's the time to get prepared for when ice or snow strikes.Make sure your vehicle is well-maintained, fluid levels are regularly topped up and tyres have good tread to grip the road. It's a good idea to carry jump leads, warm clothing and bottled water in your vehicle in case you get stuck. A reflective tabard and torch will also help improve your visibility in the dark.Make sure you completely clear your vehicle's windows of snow, ice and condensation before you set off, and clear any snow from the roof. It takes up to ten times longer to stop in ice or snow than in dry conditions, so adjust your driving to the weather and give yourself plenty of time to travel. Watch our top ten tips on safer travel by visiting www.kent.police.uk/winter

PLAXTOL LOCAL HISTORY GROUP: DECEMBER 2012

MEETING - A Country ChristmasPat Mortlock, one of our favourite speakers came to talk on the historical traditions of the twelve days of Christmas, illustrated by paintings and photos of famous country houses in the snow. Our English festival is one of the longest in Europe because the rich undertook to feed the poor for twelve days during the lean winter months. The evidence for this is seen in medieval England when Richard II in 1384, fed 1,000 people with meat and drink at Eltham Palace. No further evidence of this philanthropic act is

found until 1482 when Edward IV gave an extravagant feast at Christmas with 1,000sheep, 6 bulls, and even porpoises. A month later he died. The Earl of Northumberland in the sixteenth century maintained this tradition with a feast of 15 swans and malmsey wine “as always”. The long tradition of feeding the poor, including entertainment, has existed in Coventry since 1610, as has the tradition of role reversal in Roman times, between masters and slaves on twelfth night. In north Kent at Christmas, a play was performed outside in the “playstool”area near the church, when a collecting bowl was passed around on “Plough Monday” for distribution among the poor. But in 1647 Christmas was abolished by Cromwell. Churches were closed and three hundred vicars were imprisoned for disobeying this rule. Thus, Christmas remained in decline until it was reinvented by the Victorians. The first Christmas card was in 1843, following the introduction of the penny post in 1840. The Christmas tree came from a German tradition since George III had a German wife. Beef was eaten in the north of England and goose in the south. Nevertheless, in 1887 the original

tradition was still alive since the writer Henry James noted that seventy rustics were invited to eat beef, turkey and plum pudding at Ightham Mote. Pat Mortlock reminded us that there is now no meat in mince pies and no plums in plum pudding. Yet some of the original Christmas traditions still exist. David Gurney set out a series of our own Plaxtol snow scenes from our photographic archive.

PLAXTOL LOCAL HISTORY GROUP : JANUARY 2012 MEETING

Sevenoaks Villages – the Past in PicturesOur speaker Ed Thompson has been collecting period photographs over many years. He is now looking into the collections of photographs held in libraries as he feels that they should be made available to wider audiences and not kept in files. His talk on the Sevenoaks villages started in a clockwise direction at Weald and finished nearby in Stone Street, these villages forming a garland around Sevenoaks. Many of the period photographs in black and white have soft tones. In particular the snapshots of people, such as children crossing a road and a Baptist minister giving communion in the open air to a lady in a wheelchair, capture a moment in time not to be repeated, quite unlike static postcard views. Postcards were the text messages of the time, our speaker explained. A postcard could be written and sent in the morning and a reply received the same afternoon. Many are therefore dated and are useful records. Some memorable images were the destruction of the station at Westerham making way for the M25 motorway, the blackout screen in the White Hart Hotel, Brasted,on which some Battle of Britain pilots had written their names and also women at work in World War II. Who would have thought that there was a Lido full of happy bathers at Dunton Green in the 1950’s. The last photograph of this nostalgic look at the more recent past were of cottages at Stone Street surrounded by the neat lines of apple orchards as far as one could see. V.DussekDavid Gurney set out some books from our archives with period photographs. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 12th February at 8pm when David Williams will talk on Oldbury Hill & Its Ancient Trackways.

Weather, Bikes, Dogs and MumsYesterday at work I had one of those conversations where cycling accidents were compared. One friend was hoping that the light dusting of snow didn’t freeze so that she could cycle in the next morning. I told her to be careful after my experience of an emergency brake on a slippery road when I ended up in a heap with a broken helmet. Another told us of her rather embarrassing incident at the weekend where she’d cycled a fair distance, arrived home and forgot that she’d moved to the kind of shoes that clip into the bikes pedals and slowly fell sideways to the pavement when she forgot to unclip herself (something we’ve all done a few times, in my case, most often at intersections with roads where the maximum number of people can look, point and laugh). After so much wet weather I started walking dogs with my mum (she borrows them from a neighbour) and was getting quite involved in this as an alternative to bike rides. At least there wouldn’t be any accidents this way. Not so though - in the last two months mum has ended up in hospital twice as a direct result of the over zealous Labradors that we’ve been taking out! (Nothing too serious, although she does still have a bit of a limp). It seems that it’s just not safe to step outside sometimes! But that’s ok. It’s rather cold right now and Norman cat and I are quite happy to stay cosy and warm inside. Maybe we’ll leave the escapades on wheels and with multiple legs until it gets just a shade warmer. It will also give us time to work out some sort of device to protect mums legs (current suggestions include making a

zimmer frame ‘skirt’ by tying two together or outing a hole in a dustbin base, turning it upside down and popping mum in there.)I don’t mean to wish time away, but roll on spring! Until then, if you are out, be careful of slippy roads and bouncy dogs. Helen

DON’T LAG BEHIND THIS WINTERAs the temperature gauge plummets, South East Water is urging its customers to be prepared and make sure their homes are wrapped up for winter. When thetemperature drops outside, the water in internal plumbing pipes can freeze, expand, and cause pipesto fracture and burst.Lagging pipes against freezing temperatures will prevent the misery of aflooded home as well as help save water and money too.Steve Andrews, Head of Customer and Commercial Services at South East Water, said: “During the winter period we see a rise in the number of bursts on our water network and this is the same for our customers’ properties too.“People need to be aware of the hidden danger in the attic, where a lot of internal pipework exists. A collapsed ceiling or coming home to water running down the stairs as a result of a frozen pipe thawing out and then bursting is a nightmare, and can be a costly winter experience.”• Top tips to beat the winter blues:o Know where your internal stoptap is - usually under the kitchen sinko Lag outside pipes with insulating materialo Ensure pipes, cisterns and tanks in unheated areas such as lofts are lagged

o Repair dripping tapso If away, leave the heating on lowo Leave loft doors open to allow warm air to circulateo If a pipe bursts turn off the water and central heatingo Keep the number of a reliable plumber handyTo find out more information on how properties can stay warm this winter visit www.southeastwater.co.uk/winter and for additional tips go to www.metoffice.gov.uk/getreadyforwinter.Further information: Rachel Lawson 01634 276393 or Jo Osborn 01634 873033

Shipbourne Farmers’ Market : FebruaryThough it may not seem like it, the days are starting to lengthen and a trip to the market is a great way to get out and about and shake off the winter gloom. Then it’s back home with all your goodies for some serious comfort eating, or maybe you plan to boost your immune system with plenty of locally grown produce and lean meat and fish. Lemon sole, halibut, skate and turbot are all good at this time of year. Shellfish fans should keep an eye out for clams, mussels, oysters, cockles and .scallops. For meat eaters, game is an excellent choice for seasonal healthy eating – game is lean and full of flavour so cook it simply on the griddle or quickly stir-fried, rather than the long stewing dishes our grandparents favoured. Venison, guinea fowl, wood pigeon and partridge are all good in February, while for real comfort eaters try mutton for its rich flavour.

Serve your meat with the best of all the cabbages and brassicas that are around now. Savoy cabbage, cauliflower, sprouts and purple sprouting broccoli all work perfectly in stir fries and curries, or serve them simply shredded and steamed tossed with a little seasoning plus a dash of rapeseed oil. Main crop potatoes, Jerusalem artichokes, parsnips and turnips provide the starch that keeps us going in the cold so mash them together to go with your game dishes. Local fruit is sparse but there are still apples to be enjoyed – the storing varieties keep well until April so make sure to buy when you see them, their flavour is still sweet and fragrant. Early forced rhubarb is the cook’s friend now – wonderful in traditional crumbles, compotes and pies, it also goes well with rich flavoured meat and fish so serve a rhubarb sauce with grilled mackerelThe Spanish know a thing or two about serving

wonderful winter veg. Here’s a recipe from Mary Gwynn’s new book, The Busy Mum’s Vegetarian Cookbook published by Simon and Schuster £20.Spanish greens and rice stew with garlic chilli mayoThere is something indulgent and comforting about stirring a spoonful of garlicky mayo into the green depths of this stew. All the flavours meld and it smells heavenly Serves 4 – 6 Preparation time 10 minutes, Cooking time 30 minutes• 2 tbsp olive oil • 2 large onions, finely chopped• 3 small turnips, peeled and diced• 3 medium carrots, peeled and diced• 500g (1lb 2oz) spring greens, shredded• 1litre (2.2pints) hot vegetable stock• ¼ tsp saffron strands• 150g (5oz) risotto or paella rice• salt and freshly ground black pepper• For the mayo• 2 -3 cloves garlic• 1 tsp smoked sweet paprika• 1 small red chilli, seeded and chopped• 6 tbsp mayonnaise, ideally home made with olive oil• juice of ½ lemon1 Heat the oil in a large heavy-based pan and add the onion. Fry over a low heat for 3 - 5 minutes, stirring frequently until soft but not browned. Add the remaining vegetables and cook for a further 3 -4 minutes until the greens wilt.2 Mix the saffron strands with a couple of tablespoons of the hot stock then add the vegetables with the remaining stock and seasoning. Bring to the boil and add the rice. Lower the heat and simmer for 15 – 20 minutes until the rice is tender.3 While the stew is cooking, pound the garlic in a pestle and mortar with the paprika and chilli to a paste. Gradually work in the mayonnaise and add lemon juice and seasoning to taste. Serve the stew in warm bowls with the mayo to stir in and bread for mopping.
