World Cancer Day aims to save millions of preventable deaths each year by raising awareness and education about the disease, pressing governments and individuals across the world to take action.

Taking place under the tagline ‘We can. I can.’, World Cancer Day 2016-2018 will explore how everyone – as a collective or as individuals – can do their part to reduce the global burden of cancer.

Just as cancer affects everyone in different ways, all people have the power to take action to reduce the impact that cancer has on individuals, families and communities.

World Cancer Day is a chance to reflect on what you can do, make a pledge and take action.

Cigna encourages you to visit www.worldcancerday.org for more information on how you can make a difference in the fight against cancer.

THE FACTS AND FIGURESOvarian and prostate cancer

Ovarian cancer and prostate cancer are among the most frequently diagnosed cancers across the globe. This newsletter edition will look at the prevalence of the diseases, risk factors, and signs and symptoms.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

Signs can include pain in lower abdomen, or sides, or feeling bloated or full. However in the early stages, most women don’t report any symptoms at all. Unfortunately, this means the disease is generally at an advanced stage when diagnosed.1

If the cancer grows out of the ovary, it can cause symptoms from the tumour growing anywhere in the area between the pelvis. This can cause abdominal pain, back pain, the need to pass urine more often than usual, constipation, pain during sex or a swollen abdomen.4

Women presenting any signs or symptoms should discuss them with their healthcare professional. This will help find the cause, and treatment will be given where necessary.

If you have a strong family history of ovarian or breast cancer, you may want to speak with your doctor or a genetic counsellor about having a blood test to look for BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene changes.

OVERVIEW AND PREVALENCE

The 5-year prevalence of women globally living with ovarian cancer is 22.6 per 100,000.1 Ovarian cancer is the seventh most common cancer in women worldwide, with the highest incidence of the disease in Europe and Northern America.1 In the US, the American Cancer Society estimates about 22,280 women will receive a new diagnosis of ovarian cancer this year alone.2 In 2012, the rate of ovarian cancer was more than two times higher in Central and Eastern Europe compared with Eastern Asia.1

RISKS AND CAUSES

Around 90% of ovarian cancer cases are epithelial ovarian cancer. This means the cancer has formed on the surface layer covering the ovary. The causes of epithelial ovarian cancer are still relatively unknown, but there are some factors which can increase a woman’s risk.

A family history of cancer is one of the most important risk factors. About 5 – 15% of ovarian cancer cases are caused by an inherited faulty gene called BRCA1 and BRCA2. The risk of developing ovarian cancer gets higher with age– most ovarian cancer cases are in women who have past their menopause. Other possible risk factors include being overweight or tall, having endometriosis, infertility or undergoing Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).4

Risk of ovarian cancer may be lowered by taking the contraceptive pill, having children and breast feeding.3

OVERVIEW AND PREVALENCE

Prostate cancer is the fifth most common cause of death among men, and the second most common cancer worldwide.5 Two thirds of prostate cancer cases are diagnosed in more developed regions in the world.6

The American Cancer Society estimates about 180,890 new cases of prostate cancer were diagnosed in 2016 across the United States.7

RISKS AND CAUSES

About 1 man in 7 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime.

Research has found several lifestyle and biological factors that might affect a man’s risk of getting prostate cancer. These include: 8

› Age: The average age of man at prostate cancer diagnosis is 66. Most cases (6 cases in 10) are diagnosed over the age of 65, and prostate cancer in men under the age of 40 is rare.7

› Ethnicity: While the reasons for ethnic differences is prostate cancer diagnosis are not clear, men of African-American ethnicity are more than twice as likely to die of prostate cancer than white men. Prostate cancer also occurs less in Asian-American and Hispanic ethnicities.

› Family history: Having a father or a brother with prostate cancer more than doubles a man’s risk of developing the disease.

› Genes: In a small number of cases, some types of inherited gene changes can raise prostate cancer risk.

› Diet: Research has linked diets that are high in red meat, or high-fat dairy products have a slightly higher impact on prostate cancer.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

Early prostate cancer usually shows no symptoms, and can often go unnoticed. More advanced stages of prostate cancer can present symptoms such as problems urinating or needing to urinate more, blood in the urine or semen and erectile dysfunction.

These symptoms can often be caused by other, less serious conditions. However it is still important that any men who notice these symptoms tell their healthcare professional.

CIGNA GLOBAL WELLBEING SOLUTIONLaunched in June 2016

Making New Year resolutions in order to achieve a healthier life is now easier. Through CignaEnvoy, Cigna facilitates and supports members willing to make a change and enjoy a healthier life. With our Global Wellbeing Solution programme, you can be individually coached, supported and guided by a trained nurse educating, encouraging and helping you to achieve a healthier life.

THERE ARE TWO PARTS TO THE PROGRAMME

Updated information about healthy lifestyle patterns and tips about nutrition, stress, physical activity and sleep are available.

The possibility to be individually coached by a trained nurse. A health risk assessment tool has been designed to identify members at high risk of coronary heart disease and/or diabetes. When a member meets the criteria, they are given the opportunity to be supported by a Cigna nurse.

Patricia Gil Milan, a Nurse Case Manager from the Clinical Team, explains in more detail...

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?The wellness program is a wellbeing tool that you can use to reduce and prevent complications related to your conditions, as well as to stay healthy longer. We actively help you to take your health choices into your own hands and engage you in improving your health through our various prevention and well-being programmes.

It has been widely documented that patient education makes an impact on diabetes and heart conditions management. A healthier life is attainable if members truly understand the importance of medication compliance, periodic assessments, avoiding harmful use of alcohol, foot hygiene and healthy lifestyle patterns.

22

WHY HAVE THESE CONDITIONS BEEN PRIORITISED?Obesity, diabetes and coronary heart conditions are key topics on public health agendas, as well as within international health organisations. More than a third of adults worldwide are overweight and nearly 1 in 11 people live with diabetes; a disease which caused 1.5 million deaths in 2012. Diabetes is also a major cause of kidney failure, blindness, strokes, lower limb amputation and heart attacks.

Wellbeing programs are used worldwide; evidence supports them as useful and a big effort has been carried out to make them accessible for more people. In concordance with the international recommendations Cigna now offers this programme so expats insured by Cigna can also benefit from healthier life patterns.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS FOR THE HEALTH RISK ASSESSMENT?The process is quick and easy. Once logged in to Envoy, click on the link “Health and Wellbeing” and take the health risk assessment. If you are relatively healthy, you will be able to access the healthy lifestyle recommendations. Those at high risk will be offered referral to a Cigna nurse who will tailor a coaching programme. The service is optional and members can withdraw at any moment without affecting their benefits at all. If a member wishes to participate in the programme and provides consent, a nurse will get in contact in less than 3 or 4 working days.
