RELAND has everything from rugged links to

manicured parklands. Even a mere corner of the country has enough quality links to satisfy a connoisseur. Let’s look, for example, in the west of the country.

Lahinch was originally laid out in 1894 by Old Tom Morris and Dr Alister MacKenzie revised thelayout in 1927. It was broadly untouched until esteemed modern architect Martin Hawtree modernised the course in 1999.

Two of the original Old

Tom holes remain. The par-5 4th, Klondyke, and the short 5th, The Dell, are both as they were 100 years ago. Blind shots abound and this pair of holes engenders significant post-rounddebate among visitors and members alike.

Nearby, Trump International Golf Links and Hotel Ireland has a Greg Norman-designed course with an extensive dune network that place it high on any list of modern

layouts. The giant dune that forms the backdrop to the par-5 1st is a teaser for what is to follow, a layout set up for the travelling golfer, meaning it is more manageable, but no less interesting or spectacular than Lahinch.

The next destination is Tralee. It is epic. Tralee is one of those pieces of golfing terrain where it is impossible not to buildgreat golf holes. Twelve of the holes here areworld class. The genius is the holes that tie these classics together do not let standards slip too far.

nine and God created the rest - so the saying goes. A two-pint Pebble Beach if you will.

ULTURE lovers should visit the Roman

theatre in Aspendos, which dates back to the 2nd century and is incredibly well preserved. Sun worshippers will find endless white beaches and sports fans can try their hand at water sports.

But many visitors to Turkey go for great golf, and there are plenty of courses to choose from.

Carya is a wonderful heathland course that wouldn’t be out of place in Surrey and its clubhouse is Turkey’s first built in traditional

English architectural style. National Golf Club is one of the oldest, most respected clubs in Turkey. The 18-hole David Feherty design winds through a forest of eucalyptus and pine trees, past natural lakes, all overlooked by the snow-capped Taurus mountains.

Antalya Golf Club‘s 36 holes, the work of European Golf Design, are sure to test golfers of all abilities. The PGA Sultan is more demanding and

has hosted both Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy in the past. Tight tee shots with encroaching water hazards present a true challenge. The Pasha is gentler and ideal for holiday golf. Both courses offer beautiful views.

Kaya Eagles is, we think, one of the most under-rated courses in the region. Set in natural pine and eucalyptus forests, it is challenging but offset by lovely views.

The Maxx Royal Belek Golf Resort is one of the most glamorous complexes in the country and includes an all-inclusive hotel

as well as golf villas, which accommodate up to 10 and are the last word in luxury. Their Montgomerie-designed course hosts the annual Turkish Airlines Open and offers a real challenge thanks to the water hazards and rapid, sloping greens.

Cornelia is golfer’s haven. Three Nick Faldo-designed loops of nine – Gaia, Sempronius and Tiberius – are collectively rated among Continental Europe’s top 100. Stay at either Cornelia De Luxe or Cornelia Diamond, both large 5-star, all-inclusive resorts with a

wealth of facilities and direct access to both the beach and the golf course.

Gloria is the largest resort complex in Belek with three hotels on site. The Gloria Verde Resort has all the facilities you would expect and more. The two courses here, the New and Old, are impressive parkland tracks while the 9-hole Verde also comes highly rated.

Slightly off the main drag some 30 minutes east of Belek. Lykia Links,

designed by Pete Dye, is a dramatic course with sweeping dunes, gentle undulations and sea views from almost every hole.

Elsewhere, the superb Sueno Hotels Golf Belek 5-star provides access to the excellent Sueno Pines and Dunes courses, which provide a real challenge and look fantastic.

The newly-designed beach front hotel at Sueno Deluxe is sure to be a hit when it opens this May.

Another great 5-star resort is Voyage Belek, which golfing visitors can use as a base to play the impressive Montgomerie Maxx Royal Golf Club.

In Morocco you can choose from hotels with four stars to six stars – they are all good.

Similarly, Kenzi Menara Palace is another great base from which to play Al Maaden, Samanah and Royal Golf Marrakech.

Not to be missed are three courses with what might be termed an American/European aesthetic, each designed by a famous architect: Cabell Robinson, Robert Trent Jones and Kyle Phillips.

stones, from which the 45 square-mile palm grove grew.

Mainly flat and more subtle in its demands, Palmeraie is nevertheless a fine test and pleasurable for players of all levels.

Much tougher is Kyle Phillips’ new Al Maaden. Albeit long and demanding, its design is constantly intriguing and invigorating.

You can also enjoy a relaxing 27 holes at Royal Golf Marrakech, built by

the Pasha of Marrakech in 1933 and which has hosted the likes of Winston Churchill and Lloyd George.

There are also three Arizona-style desert courses, by Steve Forrest, Jack Nicklaus and Niall Cameron.

Forrest’s Noria offers areas of cactus-covered wasteland and boulder-strewn ravines. The architect’s vision was of a traditional village that celebrated the architecture of southern Morocco.

Meanwhile the Samanah Club is a stunner, showcasing Jack’s work at its best.
