After providing for your loved ones, a gift to Leeds Cares is another way of showing how much you care - because small or large, your gift will help to improve health and wellbeing for your family and everyone in Leeds, across Yorkshire and beyond.

Many of the gifts we receive are from people who want to ‘give something back’ to the hospital out of gratitude for the care and support they may have received or to say thank you for the care of a loved one.

It is important that we can ensure funds are used where the need is greatest and we work closely with our NHS colleagues to fund the projects that will have the biggest impact on health and wellbeing.

You can help by giving gifts that enable this, by giving your gift to be used wherever the need is greatest.

Of course sometimes people prefer to leave a gift to a particular area of work or a part of the hospital with which they have a connection - something that’s close to their heart.

We can help with both - providing guidance on how to word your gift to ensure your wishes are met.

Often people choose to leave a share of what is left over after all other wishes have been carried out, which is known as a residuary gift. You can also leave a specific amount of money, which is known as a pecuniary gift.

Here is a brief overview of the different options you have:

• A residuary gift - A share of your estate after all debts have been settled and other gifts made.

• A pecuniary gift - A fixed sum of money.

• A specific gift - An identifiable asset such as a property, an investment of stocks and shares or a piece of jewellery or artwork.

• A reversionary gift - Allows you to provide for a loved one during their lifetime, for example giving them the use of a home or other asset. After their death, the assets are passed to another specified beneficiary.

Your gift will make an enormous difference to the patients and families using the hospital in the years to come.

What type of gift can I make?

Pioneering lifesaving researchIn 2017, Dr Maurice and Mrs Asneth Bernard left a gift

to Leeds Cares in memory of their grandson, Jeremy Neil Allen, who tragically died of an

incurable brain tumour aged just eighteen months old.

Dr and Mrs Bernard were determined that the money should be used in order to improve outcomes for children now and in the future, so more families didn’t have to go through what they had.

The family’s gift was used to help deliver a brand new

Clinical Research Facility at Leeds Children’s Hospital - the first of

its kind completely dedicated to paediatric care.

This dedicated, age-appropriate facility allows research projects to be delivered more easily

alongside patient care. The facility has six beds and is able to support children participating in a wide range of research studies, improving understanding and outcomes for children with a wide range of conditions.

“We are enormously grateful to Dr and Mrs Bernard, without whom this facility would not be possible. This gift enables us to increase the number of young people who can participate in research and improve clinical outcomes. We could not continue to make such a difference without the heart-felt generosity of our supporters.” Professor Adam Glaser, Senior Research Lead in Paediatric Oncology

Improving cancer treatments for breast cancer patients Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the largest teaching hospitals in the UK and is involved in research at all levels, developing and trialling new treatments for patients. Every year, thanks to gifts from Leeds Cares supporters, we are able to help fund vital research posts and projects across the hospital.

One such project was recently funded by Breast Cancer Action; a community group working in partnership with Leeds Cares. They were left a legacy to fund research into the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. This funded a new PhD study looking into factors that influence the success of breast cancer chemotherapy.

Chemotherapy is used in the treatment of around 35% of breast cancer patients, but presently there is no way of predicting whether a patient will be effectively treated with the available chemotherapy agents. This study will help find out more about tumour sensitivity to specific chemotherapy, which could improve treatments and increase the survival rate.

“I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014 which

resulted in surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, with cosmetic surgery to ‘match me up’. This was followed by

further tests and surgery in 2017. Every aspect of my treatment was prompt, efficient and

very caring. In order to express my gratitude and appreciation, I have made provision in

my Will for a modest sum of money to be left specifically to the Breast Surgery Unit at St James’s University Hospital, in order

to help maintain and continue their fantastic work for other patients in

the future” - Carol White

“I have been a patient at Leeds Cancer Centre for some years now, during which time I have had many

tests and treatments. I am very conscious that just a few years ago, before such rapid

progress in diagnosis and treatments, I would probably not have survived for so long. The

staff and diagnostic equipment have impressed me immensely and I am left with a deep sense

of gratitude. I am pleased to have made a legacy pledge for Leeds Cares in the hope

that it can help towards the purchase and maintenance of specialist equipment.” - Merton Nicholls

“I have appreciated the level of care and

treatment given to me by the Cardiology Department at Leeds General Infirmary and am pleased to think that my legacy will assist its future

work” - JA, Alwoodley

Most Wills are straightforward and take less than 45 minutes to set out. After you have provided for your loved ones, it is easy to include a gift to support a charity or cause you care about. If your estate is complicated, a solicitor will be able to guide you through the process. Spending a little time in preparing your Will can help the process go even more smoothly.

Making a Will for the first timeWe would always recommend you use a solicitor or professional Will writer to ensure your wishes are fully understood. Details for your solicitorThese details are required in all Wills written by a solicitor. Executors will find this helpful when ensuring any gift left to Leeds Cares reaches us.

Frequently Asked QuestionsDo I need a Will?Making a Will is important, as it ensures your family and friends are provided for in the way that you want after you die.

What should I do if I already have a Will and wish to make small changes? You can easily update your Will using a document called a Codicil. This makes a simple amendment to your current Will. It’s completed in the same way as your Will and should be stored with it. We would recommend that you consult a solicitor or professional Will writer to draft this for you.

What if I want to make significant changes? If you would like to make significant changes to your Will, we recommend that you consult your solicitor or professional Will writer and consider having it redrafted. It is also a good idea to review your Will regularly to make sure that it is up to date with your circumstances. For example, there may have been births, deaths, marriages or divorce within your family since you last looked at your Will.

Who do I need to inform?A Will is legally binding and your solicitor or legal professional will ensure it is drafted correctly and that your wishes are carried out. It is also usually a good idea to tell your next of kin or close friend of any particular wishes.

12

Page 13: Your gift Their future - Leeds Cares · paediatric care. This dedicated, age-appropriate facility allows research projects to be delivered more easily alongside patient care. The

What is an Executor and who should I appoint? An Executor is someone you give the legal authority to take care of your wishes and administer your estate after you die. You appoint your Executor(s) when you make a Will. Often people choose relatives, close friends or a solicitor. If your arrangements are straightforward, you may only need one Executor but most people tend to have two. You should ask permission before appointing your Executor and you should tell them where you have stored your original Will.

Do I need to inform Leeds Cares about my gift? You do not need to tell us, but if you feel comfortable sharing your intentions then we would love to hear from you, so we can thank you for your support and keep you up-to-date with how your support makes a difference.

Can I speak to someone about my gift?At Leeds Cares we have a dedicated Legacy Officer, to help and support you through the process of setting up a legacy and provide guidance on the right wording to use.
