FRIDAY 10 DECEMBER

and it’s going to be magic!

Coach Christmas aka Master of Magic

Save the Children

Christmas Jumper Day is coming…

COACH CHRISTMAS HERE!

Welcome to the most magical Christmas Jumper Day EVER!

I’m now your official coach – your Master of Magic. My job is to help you have loads of fun AND make the world better with a crafted sweater!

Your Christmas jumper might look like just a jumper, but it is WAY more than that. By wearing it and getting your whole school wearing theirs, you can help kids everywhere get the food they need to laugh, play and see the magic in the world again.

So, jumpers on people! Let’s protect the magic for kids everywhere!

everywhere

Seeing that last one takes a lot of imagination – which sums Munni up!

She didn’t just see a boring old roof, she used it to conjure up an actual classroom – and become the actual teacher! Magic, Munni!

Like when they turn a sheet into a snowy kingdom. Or when they see Santa’s sleigh instead of a plane. Or when a rooftop becomes a school.

Kids see magic

What makes it all even more magical is that Munni seemed like she wouldn’t even be able to go to school at all a few years ago. But Save the Children’s community workers stepped in and made sure she could keep learning instead of having to get married.

That’s when, with our help, she decided to begin classes for local women. “If we have education, we must give it to our brothers and sisters,” she says. What a star!

CRAFT YOUR OWN JUMPER!It’s super-simple. First, tell everyone to dig out an old sweater. Then get them to cover it with stickers, tinsel, tin foil and whatever magical sparkly stuff they can find. You could even hold a jumper-decorating session at school.

2

PROTECT THE MAGICIt’s our job to protect the magic by making sure kids get the stuff they need. Send Save the Children everything you’ve raised by 14 January. It’s super-easy – just see page 15. And check out pages 12-14 for all the ways your money helps kids see magic.

5 CLAIM YOUR JUSTGIVING PAGEI’ve set up a JustGiving page for you – all you have to do is go to claim.savethechildren.org.uk and make it your own. Enter your Christmas Jumper Day reference number (which will start with CJD21XXXXXXX) and verification code from the letter in your pack. Then set your target (you’re gonna smash it!) and add some magical Christmassy pictures. Once that’s done, email all the parents your link so they can donate.

3

RAISE THE MONEYThe boring bit, right? Wrong! This is actually the most magical bit. Collect donations from everyone who wears a jumper – then that money can help kids get the basics they need to see the wonder in the world again.

Christmas Jumper Day is about more than just sweaters – it’s about seeing the world like kids see it and protecting that magic. Here are my wizard ways to make money appear as if from thin air!

to make money magically appear

5 mesmerising tricks

Abracadabra!

GET CRAFTY! Ask kids to make Christmas gifts like magic-themed decorations, cards and festive (magicians’) hats. Then send them to parents and ask them to make a donation.

2

CREATE SPELL- BINDING SWEATERS Run a crafting session where everyone in your class conjures up their very own customised jumper! Then take pictures of their magical masterpieces, send them to parents, and see if they’ll buy them back for extra donations.

TINSEL THE TEACHER My favourite! You will love this. Run a crafting session where the kids customise two magical jumpers for the Headteacher. Display them a couple of weeks before Christmas Jumper Day with collection jars. The one with the most donations from parents wins – and the Headteacher has to wear it... ALL DAY!

4

BAKE SALE EXTRAVAGANZA Cast a spell with cakes! You know the drill! Ask kids and parents to get mixing and bake some tasty treats. If the cakes look magical that’s even better. Then hold a bake sale at your primary school.

answer reveal!

#ChristmasJumperDayYOUR MAGIC CHRISTMAS SWEEPSTAKE!

How will it work?I suggest asking people for £2 per guess. You can decide the prize – you could give the winner half of the pot, with the rest going to your fundraising total. Even better, why not ask around to see if you can get a prize donated? That way, 100% goes to helping kids. Then pay in your donations by 14 January at the absolute very latest.

Sweepstake conditions1. This sweepstake is a work or residents’ lottery promoted by the employee listed above who is responsible for managing the sweepstake. This means that (a) people may only take part if they all work or all live in the same set of premises, (b) the sweepstake may only be advertised at those premises, (c) entrants’ rights are not transferable, (d) all participants must be 18 or over, and (e) the sweepstake is in Great Britain.2. All of the proceeds from the sweepstake must be donated to Save the Children, apart from the cost of a prize and reasonable expenses which can be deducted from the proceeds. The prize must be identified before people enter. A profit must not be made.3. The price to enter must be the same for every participant and must be paid before entry can be made.4. Once you’ve collected your donations, send them to us using the instructions in your Christmas Jumper Day Gameplan.

team too, people!

We’re on planet Earth’s

This Christmas Jumper Day will be the most earth-friendly – ever! That’s why I’m sending you less stuff (it’s all there for you to download at www.christmasjumperday.org/schoolspack) and making sure you can recycle as much as possible.

The big thing is that you don’t have to buy a new jumper that you might only wear once. All you have to do is take a boring old sweater and whack on some tinsel, stickers, and other decorations to make it sparkle and shine. Whatever you come up with, it’s bound to be magic – because you made it, obviously!

10

Kids see all the cool stuff – Santa, elves, clouds that you can sit on – all of it. The lucky kids, that is. Because kids who don’t have the stuff they need most, like food, school and medicine, find all that magic harder to see.

But when kids are safe and happy everything – anything – is possible. Just check out these stories if you don’t believe me.

Anything is possible!Ph

Fantastical Fawad

Fawad* is all about the magic. It might look like he’s just walking round his local market seeing normal boring market-type stuff. But what he’s actually seeing are epic battles and adventures from his favourite cartoon show. He’s seeing kings and princesses, gods and monsters. He’s seeing magical flying characters and animals who are completely different from any animal I’ve ever met.

“The lion runs away when he sees an elephant,” he says. “I have seen it too in the market. It’s all real what I’ve seen.”

Fawad’s world is full of amazing things – but there’s a lot of stuff that makes real life tough. His dad is blind and can’t work. Fawad also used to sleep on the street and have to go picking through rubbish with his big brother Nadim to help the family survive.

But now Fawad gets to sleep and eat meals at a shelter for homeless children supported by Save the Children. It’s a place where he can learn, play and have fun with other kids. And now, with a full tummy, it’s a place where Fawad can let his imagination run wild!

It’s a happy story but the tough thing is there’s loads of other kids who aren’t so lucky and who struggle to see the magic. Those are the kids you’re helping by getting involved in Christmas Jumper Day. Good job!

Now I’m not the best at geography. But I do know if you go from Venezuela to Peru, you don’t usually go through China! That’s not how Alix* sees it though. And that’s not because Alix is even worse at geography than me – she’s super-smart. It’s because she has a totally wild imagination.

You should just listen to this kid. She’s into everything. China’s a big one – she loves China and says she’s been there (even if it’s just in her head!). She talks about kings and queens – especially the Queen of England – and even asked us, “How would the Queen of England be at Christmas? Have you been to the Castle of England? And how is the Queen?”

I honestly wish I knew.

Alix is so fun it’s sometimes easy to forget her family have had the hardest time.

Things were good for them in Venezuela, where Alix was born, but they had to leave their home, their friends and the life they loved because of the crisis there.

Now they live in Peru, a country they don’t know, surrounded by people they don’t know, trying to find jobs and struggling to get the basics. Just imagine it. It’s tough, right?

But we’re getting Alix’s mum and dad the money they need to pay for the important stuff – food, clothes, a roof over their heads. That means they can concentrate on helping Alix feel safe and happy again – so she can keep seeing the fun and wonder in the world (especially China!)

With all the money you raise on Christmas Jumper Day, you’re helping lots of children just like Alix to keep seeing the magic!

* Alix’s name has been changed here to keep her safe.

Just imagine!

Nothing’s impossible for Faisal.* This kid is MAGIC!

“I’m a ninja! I jump from the furniture like I can fly!”

He was born a refugee. But nothing can hold Faisal back. Not now he’s coming to our early learning centre and getting to let his imagination run riot.

“I paint. I paint everything! Especially bears.”

Giving kids like Faisal the chance to have fun and see the wonder in the world – it’s what Christmas Jumper Day is all about, people!

* Faisal’s name has been changed here to keep him safe.

Flying Faisal

Even things as boring as vegetables are magical at Christmas – like when carrots become a snack for flying reindeers.

But the thing is, that magic is there all the time! You just gotta know where to look, people! Simple medicine saves lives; food helps kids grow up strong and smart; and books let kids see a whole new world. So that money could warm some tummies, save some lives, and help children see the magic again!

£5 could help a child in Rwanda see the wonder in the world – providing them with a book written in their own language.

£18 could help a child sparkle in the classroom – paying for a back-to-school kit in Indonesia.

£50 could protect a child from the shadow cast by hunger – providing a family who’ve fled violence in Yemen with enough food for a month.

£66 could feed children’s imaginations – buying two weeks’ worth of food for a family of five in Syria.

£70 could light up a child’s sense of wonder – providing an LED lamp for them to study by in Gaza, where there’s just four hours of electricity a day.

£130 could help a child make a miraculous recovery – providing a malnourished child in Ethiopia with medicine and therapeutic food.

Imagine the magical stuff Save the Children could do with your money:

14

Once you’ve smashed your target (you totally will!), send your money to Save the Children so they can help kids see the magic again. This year it’s safer to send your money to them online, which is super-easy:

PAY USING JUSTGIVING AND YOUR QR CODE I’ve already set you up a JustGiving page and QR code to collect and keep track of your team’s donations. Claim your page at claim.savethechildren.org.uk using the reference number and code on the letter in this pack. As soon as you’ve put all the money on your fundraising page (including any offline donations) it’ll go straight to Save the Children.

PAY IN ONLINE Go to www.christmasjumperday.org to make a fast, secure payment.

PAID IN USING YOUR TEAM TEXT CODE? If you or your squad have done this, your money is already hard at work helping kids! If you’ve collected cash, that’s cool too. Here’s how to make sure it gets to the right place. Remember: do not send cash in the post!

PAY IN AT THE BANK Take your money with the giro slip from your letter to your personal or work bank or any NatWest branch to pay in. Unfortunately, these slips can’t be paid in at the Post Office.

PAY BY POST Send your giro slip, with a cheque payable to ‘Save the Children’, in the envelope provided. Please don’t send cash in the post – I don’t want the money you’ve raised to get lost! Whatever you do, put your unique Christmas Jumper Day reference number (which will start with CJD21XXXXXXX) in the envelope so I can tick off your name and send you a special thank you. It’s on the letter in your pack (starting with CJD21).

GOT QUESTIONS OR NEED MORE STUFF? You might have noticed your fundraising pack is a bit smaller this year (to help the planet and save some pennies). If you need help or more free stuff, call Jumper HQ on 0808 281 1031 or email [email protected]

THANK YOU! The sooner you pay in your money, the sooner it can help kids see the magic again! Please pay in by 14 January.

Save the Children exists to help every child reach their full potential. In more than 100 countries including the UK, we make sure children stay safe, healthy and learning, and change the future for good. Discover more about our work at www.christmasjumperday.org/how-you-help
