Second Annual Event
Banchory River Festival is a Banchory and District Initiative Event, organised and managed by volunteers. Scottish registered charity: SC041630
Your FREE Guide
The River Festival aims to celebrate the arts, culture,
heritage of our area and the local community, with a
central focus on the River Dee which runs through the
town and our lives - our very own Festival, now in its
second year!
There are quite a few new events this year, including
a Duck Race, two days of Steam Train rides, a pop-up
Jazz Supper Club and an interactive, activity packed
Community Village featuring Banchory Pipe Band &
Chainsaw Carving.
The Cra! Village is expanding, you may have seen the
results of some guerrilla knitting about the town al-
ready! Anyone who would like to help us decorate the
town with knitted and crocheted bunting - please
pop into Meg's Attic for a pattern or find them online
at www.banchoryriverfestival.com
For those who love the outdoors, there are guided
historical walks, an accompanied run courtesy of
Banchory Running Club and if your children have al-
ways wanted to learn to fish, there is an introductory
session at Raemoir Trout Fishery.
We are thinking more about the river itself this year,
the good and the bad - so we are starting off the
weekend with a volunteer clean-up of the riverbank,
led by the River Dee Trust's outreach officer Joanna
Dick.
This will be followed by our opening event The Big
Fat Electric Ceilidh at the Woodend Barn on Friday
night. This is ceilidh dancing, but not as you know it -
energetic and electronic, yet familiar and easy to join
in!
You won't even have to wait until 13 - 15 June, there
is a car treasure hunt, a photography competition
and a writing competition sponsored by Banchory
Rotary to get you having fun right now.
Most of the events this weekend are suitable for all
the family and many are free, please see our website
www.banchoryriverfestival.co.uk for more informa-
tion. We hope you'll keep this newspaper or pass it on
as a handy guide to the Festival Weekend's events.
Last year we took advantage of a fantastic opportuni-
ty to decorate the protective covering on the bridge
parapet, led by local artist Mel Shand who designed
the River Festival logo. This year car window stickers
proclaiming "Nithin iver happens in Bunk'ry" have
been spotted as far afield as Dubai and have been
mentioned by local legends Cabrach Radio.

Banchory Show Forget Me Not Club
Banchory West Church opened its new glass doors on
Easter Sunday to a full-house of all ages. Extensively
renovated, with new heating, lighting and audio visu-
als. Downstairs pews have been replaced by
movable seats enabling flexible use of the space. A
new kitchen, disabled li!s and upstairs meeting
rooms allow hospitality, access and comfort for ev-
eryone. Everyone is delighted with the development.
We’d like to invite you for a good look round and
some tea, coffee and homebakes on Saturday 14th
June from 10am - 4pm. Banchory Singers will be en-
tertaining in the main Church at 11am.
A new facility for people affected by dementia & their
carers has opened its doors in Banchory. Bennett
House will provide a meeting place for our groups,
training centre for our carers & staff as well as a drop-
in facility for people on Deeside who have concerns
about the illness & need advice & support.
The project was made possible by a generous dona-
tion from the charity's Honorary President, Mrs Sheila
Ferres MBE whose late sister Ailsa was affected by de-
mentia. Local support for the project has been out-
standing and we are very grateful to everyone who
has contributed. We currently provide around 440
free hours of care per week, supported by our won-
derful volunteers, some of whom have been with us
since the charity was formed in 1999.
Our work covers from Culter to Braemar including
Tarland, Lumphanan & Torphins. We are very grateful
to Aberdeenshire Council for their continuing support
& to all our regular donors, without which the Re-
source Centre could not operate. We run a varied &
interesting programme for our members ranging
from Bingo to Bowling and Reminiscence to Rug-
making , our aim being to provide people with mean-
ingful activity that improves the quality of their lives.
The Resource Centre has a secure garden with a
beautiful donated log cabin & gazebo, both of which
were gi!ed, providing a safe environment to enjoy
the outdoors. We also have an audiovisual system
which enables us to show films, listen to music, play
on the Wii, view photographs etc - this was purchased
with money won by pupils of Aboyne Academy. A de-
mentia friendly computer is being built for our use &
this will enable clients & carers to access email & in-
ternet, with support, to keep them in touch with fami-
ly who do not live locally.
This Centre of Excellence will provide a safe haven for
many people in the years to come and is proud to be
a local charity, run by local people to serve local peo-
ple. We welcome visitors but please contact us to
make an appointment 01330 822655. Visit our web-
site - www.forgetmenotclub.co.uk. Donations can be
made via www.justgiving/forget me not club.
They say nothing ever happens in Banchory, then we
get not one but four new sports facilities in less than
a year. The town centre is the heart of outdoor sports
and activities but has lacked good changing rooms
and quality pitches for years. In the coming months
the King George V Playing Field will have a new tem-
porary changing facility for the many sports clubs
that use the park. Nick Atkins kindly gave the
portable units to the Banchory Boys Club for them to
manage.
A new grass pitch will be constructed to the east of
the King George Park later this year. The pitch has
been donated to the community by Neil Gray and his
family. The King George V Community Projects group
will manage the facility. The KGVCP group will contin-
ue to campaign for a new community hub for the
park area which will include new changing rooms and
a community run café. The café will be open during
the evenings for younger people and will include
space for events such as music nights and a cinema.
Along with the tennis courts, bowling club, boot
camps and plenty of room to roam, Banchory Town
Centre is the place to be for all your outdoor pursuits.
Come along and enjoy the fun of the 193rd Banchory
Show. Organised by the Deeside Agricultural Associa-
tion, the Show always pulls in the crowds and boasts
a fun-filled programme of activities for all the family.
The weekend starts on the Friday evening with a 5-a-
side football tournament for P5-7 age children, the in-
dustrial hall is open for viewing of the prize winning
baking, preserves, floral art and cra!s and there is
also an “Uprising” by Logan Muir in the marquee.
On the Saturday the day starts at 9am with the judg-
ing of the cattle, sheep and horses. There are lots of
tradestands and a cra! tent to visit. The a!ernoon
programme kicks off with the final of the football
tournament being decided and Dons mascot “Angus
the Bull” presenting the winners with the cup. The
grand parade of animals is a sight not to be missed
and this year Monster Trucks “Big Pete and the Grim
Reaper” will put on a spectacular display. During the
day events include a Companion Dog Show, Scolty
Hill Race, Children’s races for various age groups,
Highland Dancing, Pet Parade, Children’s Fancy
Dress, Mobile pageant and of course the ever famous
Tug o’war.
The weekend is then rounded off with a live band
“The Big Show” playing in the marquee on the Satur-
day night. For more details visit our website

Banchory Sports VillageWoodend Barn Produce Market Moving
Banchory Farmers and Produce Market- Buy local,
Eat local, Meet local
We are now in the twel!h year of the Banchory Mar-
ket and as one of the founding markets in Aberdeen-
shire we have been trading from Scott Skinners
Square on the 3rd Saturday of the month from 9am –
1pm. This summer we are relocating to Bellfield Car
Park to allow the development of Scott Skinners
Square, which heralds exciting times ahead as we re-
launch the Market to involve a wider range of produc-
ers, community and tourist events.
The market allows farmers, growers and producers
throughout Aberdeenshire to sell their produce direct
to the public. There is always a splendid family atmo-
sphere and it is well supported by the locals. There
are between 15-20 stalls selling a variety of quality lo-
cal and Scottish produce throughout the year, and
the emphasis is on freshness, quality and value for
money.
If you haven’t been to the Market you might be sur-
prised at what’s on offer from local fish & shellfish, to
locally-reared meat and game, and including a wide
range of freshly baked artisan breads , homemade
pies and baking. This beside local cheeses, eggs, pre-
serves, oils and seasonal fruit & veg - there is some-
thing for everyone. The producers are approachable
and informative, and we are planning to invite guest
stallholders and hold some events to increase value
for Market customers.
To organise a stall or to promote a community event
please email David Ritchie on [email protected].
Aberdeenshire Council has agreed to include in their
Capital Plan a fantastic Sports Facility for Banchory
which will be built at the Hill of Banchory with a com-
pletion date of 2017. The development will include a
six lane swimming pool, a learner pool, a four court
sports hall, a coffee shop and other associated facili-
ties.
To ensure that the project, which will cost approx £8
million, proceeds as planned, a contribution of
£700,000 is required from the community. On com-
pletion many groups and clubs will then be able to
use the Sports Village, which will provide a facility not
currently available in Banchory.
The Trustees of “Bandswim” are confident that the
funding can be raised. The funds from " Bandswim"
will go towards the project and we are pleased to
confirm cash pledges amounting to £200,000 have
been received . This challenge is one that can be de-
livered if everyone comes on board and make this the
Banchory No 1 Fundraising Effort in 2014/15. Jim
Knowles ( [email protected])
Woodend Barn has grown with the support of the lo-
cal community over 20 years, to become the leading
arts venue in Aberdeenshire and provides access to
the arts across the whole of rural Deeside.
Bringing the likes of Scottish Opera, National Theatre
of Scotland, Joan Armatrading and Scottish Dance
Theatre to Banchory means residents can see top
performances without having to travel into cities.
Woodend Barn also works to develop new work with
Smallpetitklein, Company of Wolves and Alasdair
Roberts and Ross Whyte.
This year Woodend Barn launched it’s first Jazz Festi-
val – Kind of Blue – and a year of food, exploring our
relationship with the food we eat and produce. It also
works closely with sound, Scotland’s festival of new
music, to shine a spotlight on the north-east every
autumn.
Becoming a Friend of Woodend Barn is a valuable
way of supporting this unique venue, plus you get
several benefits including advance notice of events,
priority booking, special offers on events and dis-
counts in Buchanans Bistro. To find out more about
