Welcome to the May issue of Your Canvey Magazine!

Well, it’s finally

here! Yes, I do

mean Spring – as I

write, the sun is shining and I only hope that

by the time you read this, we are still enjoying

the beautiful weather. At this time of year,

everyone’s thoughts turn to spring cleaning,

redecorating, moving or extending and getting

back out in the garden. In order to help get

you started, we have included a special

Homes and Gardens section in this month’s

magazine (starting on page 20) dedicated to

giving you some inspiration. There are articles

dedicated to improving your home

environment as well as details of lots of local

businesses that can help you transform your

home and garden.

We also have exciting news about the launch

of our very first book - Your Canvey

Memories. The book has been compiled by

me (Angela) in association with the Canvey

Community Archive and features a selection

of stories from the 1920s through to the late

1950s.

The book has been an absolute pleasure to

write and I have met some wonderful people

who have welcomed me into their homes and

shared their stories. I would like to take the

opportunity to thank all those whose

memories are included. It has been a pleasure

to meet you all.

Your Canvey Memories is available to

purchase now for just £8.99 and we will

deliver it free within the Castle Point area.

The book is a compilation of memories that

will transport you back to a time when

Canvey Island was a bustling holiday

destination. The beaches were crowded,

mainly with Londoners who came either for

the day or would stay for a week in the local

camp sites or one of the many bungalows

available to rent.

The stories cover the period from the early

1920s to the late 1950s and give an insight

into what life was like for those who lived

here. For those readers who remember

Canvey in those times, the book invokes fond

memories, some long forgotten.

Your Canvey Memories is published by

Canvey Island Publishing Ltd and will be

available from the 1st May 2011. You can

order your copy now by calling 01268

696404 or by post using the order form

Since the beginning of the year, we have been running a series of articles about the Canvey Carnival. The Carnival Procession is set to return this year after an 11 year absence and a date has now been set - Saturday 6th August.

Local resident Zoe Watson has formed a

committee to arrange the carnival which will

take place on the same day as the Fun Day

on the Seafront being organised by Canvey

Town Council.

Zoe explained: “We

thought it would be

ideal to hold the two

events on the same

day. We will

complement each other

and will be working in

partnership to create a

day to remember.”

Already, Zoe and her

committee have had a

number of expressions

of interest from

organisations keen to

take part in the carnival

procession and are now in

the process of raising funds

to meet the cost of the

event.

In March this year, a

competition was run to

design a Logo for the

Carnival. The competition

was open to all Junior

School children between

the ages of 7 and 11. The

logo will be used on all

advertising banners,

letterheads, event

programme and website and

the winner will be crowned King or Queen

for the day at the Carnival and be given a top

prize and certificate. The winning logo will

be announced shortly.

If you are interested in joining the

procession, entry forms are now available to

download on the website at

www.canveycarnival.co.uk

Entries need to be in by 16th July 2011.

Welcome to “Carnival Street”

In 1971, six families from Smallgains Avenue banded together and created a Henry VIII float which was highly commended in the Canvey Carnival. From then on there was no stopping them.

Organised by Stanley and Jean Baines, the

families from Smallgains Avenue went on to

win prizes for the best float four years in a

row at Canvey Carnival and went on to

enter and win carnival processions

throughout the UK.

The idea to first enter the carnival came

from Jean Baines after dressing her

children up for the carnival. She

approached her neighbours about

entering a float for the following year

and work began almost straight away.

From then on, each year they came up

with a different theme for their float

with names such as “Woodland Fantasy”

“Pink Cascade” “Silver Jubilee” and

“Go Dutch”. Their Woodland Fantasy

float was entered into events as far apart

as Burnham-on-Crouch

and Chelmsford and

was invited to take part

in an Easter parade at

Battersea Park. The

float won no less than

12 trophies!

The entry to the left

was one of their most

ambitious and featured

scenes from the

Queen’s Coronation

with Maids of Honour

representing England,

Ireland, Scotland and

Wales with a floral

display of the lion and unicorn. Jean told us

that all the flowers were handmade by the

families involved - all 12,000 of them!

Why not get together with some of your

neighbours to enter a float in this year’s

carnival procession!

85 Years of Worship at Wintergardens Baptist Church

In June 2011 Wintergardens Baptist Church celebrates 85 years of work and witness on the site. The land was donated by George Chambers back in 1926 when all that could be seen on every side were fields and the occasional bungalow.

The church family at the time had a vision

that the area would be developed for housing

and a church would be needed at the centre

of the new population. How right they

were!!

The first church building was wooden, built

on stilts and had a tin roof. When it rained

the congregation had to sing louder. There

was a tiny kitchen and one outside toilet. A

Sunday School and ladies work soon started

in addition to Sunday worship. To reach the

church, visiting preachers had to walk along

a footpath (it still exists today as footpath

10) which ran at the side of the dyke. In the

dark, there were NO street lights and some

fell in the dyke!!

Girls’ Brigade and later Boys’ Brigade

flourished for many years and whilst they

have since closed, the Sunday

school continues every week.

Mr Len Lewin served as Pastor for

over 25 years and when the new

church building was consecrated in

1982, it was Len who opened the

doors. At that time, Mr Eric

Whybrew was Pastor and he too

led the fellowship for many years

as did Adrian Tinning as

Moderator for 10 years.

The current fellowship also had a

vision which was fulfilled in

September 2009 with the appointment of

their first Minister, Mark Davison, to lead

and develop God’s work in the Winter

Gardens area and beyond. There are now

fortnightly Prayer and Bible studies, a

monthly Men’s Club, weekly Art classes

which hold regular exhibitions, Zumba

classes & other weekly activities. Fun events

such as Quiz nights, Burns Night dinner,

Cream Teas, Sales etc are also held most

months.

So history does not stand still! Come and be

part of the church’s future history, a warm

welcome awaits you.

Charity Sky Dive

Six very brave ladies took a step over and

beyond the call of duty on behalf of their local

Citizens Advice Bureau. Each agreed to raise a

minimum of £400 in sponsorship to enable

them to undertake this exhilarating challenge.

On 12th March, Cllr Joan Liddiard (above),

Tracey Trott, Lara Baker and Sharen Staines

arrived at the Maidstone jump site at 8am.

They showed no obvious signs of nerves as

they met their professional parachute instructor

who they would be harnessed to throughout

their descent.

As the plane reached 12,000ft they each lent

forward and let go – freefalling down to 5,000

ft at 120mph before their parachute opened and

they had a gentle descent to the drop zone.

At the same time Melanie Harris and Natalie

Faradon were going through the same process

at the Cambridge jump site. Christine Neville,

Bureau Manager expressed her heartfelt thanks

to the team of “jumpers” who have helped to

raise much needed funds to keep CPCAB

operational.

She would, however, like to remind the

community that Ed Holt, the only male

member of the team is still raising his

sponsorship and anyone who wishes to help

him raise funds can make a donation at:

Senior Citizens Get Active

CISCA House on Canvey is well-known

locally for the excellent services they

provide for senior citizens, and now they

have added another activity to their long

list of recreational provisions.

Every Tuesday, at 11am., Sarah Binstead

takes a Chairfit session that CISCA Patrons

have come to enjoy and look forward to

each week. Each session lasts between 30

to 50 minutes.

Chairfit is an effective and fun activity that

contributes to an enhanced sense of well-

being. The sessions help people be more

independent, improving their ability to

carry out everyday tasks in their own

homes or when out and about.

The movements involved are chair-based,

some seated and some standing, depending

on ability. Sarah’s emphasis is on having

fun at the same time as exercising. CISCA

Patrons certainly take the sessions as an

opportunity to have fun.

If you are interested in joining in the fun,

get along to CISCA House any Tuesday at

11am. CISCA House is next door to the

NHS Health Centre, in the Paddocks

grounds area of Canvey.

If you can’t lay your hands on items quickly

because they’re buried under piles of junk; if

you’re constantly moving things from one

pile to a new ‘temporary’ pile; if you find

yourself thinking, “I can’t throw this away,

it might come in useful one day,” you’re

probably a clutter victim.

Most of us put far too much time, effort and

money into acquiring, keeping and storing

possessions. Sometimes it’s good to let go. If

you’re ready to de-clutter, then we have a

few simple tips.

De-cluttering Tips

Deal with one room at a time The task will

seem less daunting. Stick with that room

until it’s finished.

Choose a nice day Take the room contents

outside. Psychologically it’s easier to sort

and let go if you’re one step removed. It’s

also less likely that the clutter will make it

back inside.

Sort everything into three piles Label them

dump, donate and keep. Be realistic: if the

item in question hasn’t been used for over a

year it is unlikely you will ever use it.

Deal with the dump and donate piles Do

this before anything comes back into the

house. It’s much harder to mess up your

good work if the stuff is physically gone.

Sort and label Place the remaining items in

clearly labelled boxes. Make sure there is

one temporary box to house items which

really belong in another room. As each room

is sorted those items can be replaced, and

other misplaced items can be housed there

while the de-cluttering process continues.

Replace everything that remains The

maxim ‘A place for everything and

everything in its place’ is a good one. House

small items in clear plastic boxes and store

them in cupboards or wardrobes.

Finally, once a week, take two bags and go

through your home. One bag is for rubbish,

the other for items in the wrong place. When

you’ve finished throw the rubbish away and

replace the misplaced items.

Garden View - Bee Nice!

Albert Einstein supposedly declared that, “If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe then man would only have four years of life left.” There is much debate over whether the great man actually did make such an assertion as he was a physicist after all, not an entomologist, but whether he did or

not, it’s a scary thought.

There’s no doubt about it, honey bees and

bumble bees are of enormous agricultural

importance. It is estimated that more than a

third of the world’s crop production relies

on these bees. Without them we’re in

trouble and they are in decline. Pesticides,

loss of habitat and disease are all thought to

be playing a part.

Bees are fascinating and beautiful creatures

and as gardeners we can play our part in

their continued survival. It’s simple: bees

need flowers for sustenance, flowers need

bees for survival and gardeners need

flowers to garden!

First of all, it’s important to think ahead

and provide flowers for bees throughout

their lifecycle, which runs from March to

September. Here are some suggestions.

Spring – Bluebells, bugle,

flowering cherry, forget-

me-not (Myosotis),

hellebore and rosemary

are all good spring plants.

Summer – Aquilegia,

sweet peas, fennel,

foxgloves, potentilla,

roses, stachys, teasel,

thyme and verbascum

Late summer / early

autumn – Aster, buddleia,

dahlia, eryngium, fuchsia,

heather, lavender and

sedum.

Secondly, unfortunately not all flowers are

created equal. Frilly double flowers, for

example, are too elaborate. They have so

many petals that the bees struggle to get to

the nectar and pollen. This is the reason that

single dahlias attract lots of bees, whilst

double varieties are generally ignored.

Single flowered rose varieties are also good,

such as the rambler Seagull, with its flat

open white blooms, large yellow stamens

and heady scent. Any similar rambler grown

over a fence or wall will do. Some, like the

pale pink Little Rambler, will even repeat

flower. Ramblers are terrific roses. They are

vigorous, disease resistant and great for

covering bare fences, unsightly sheds and

walls. Best of all they need next to no

pruning!

The main thing is to keep it simple: a few

flowers for each part of the bee life cycle

and no overly fancy varieties. I’m not

saying that you shouldn’t grow double

flowered dahlias if that’s what floats your

boat, it’s just that Mr Bee would appreciate

a few single flowered varieties thrown into

the mix. Let’s make this the year we all be

nice to bees: our future may depend on it!

He’s been chauffeur driven in style, has “watered the wicket” at The Oval, done his “business” in front of the Duke of Gloucestershire and even starred in his own Hollywood movie with Jim Dale and Spike Milligan. He,

being the Dulux dog of course.

Although Dulux has been making paint for

over 70 years, its iconic dog made its debut

in the first black and white TV ad back in

1961. Over the years, different dogs have

appeared in the adverts but to ensure they fit

the unmistakable look, they’ve all been from

a closely related line of pedigree dog. Apart

from the first dog, Shepton Dash, all of the

Dulux dogs have been breed champions, and

five of them have won “Best in Show”

prizes.

To celebrate 50 years of the Dulux Dog -

here are some top painting tips.

Maximise roller & paintbrush use

If, after a long day of painting with

emulsion, there’s still more to do tomorrow

with the same colour, instead of washing

the roller/paintbrush thoroughly, why not

simply wrap it in cling film, it will remain

good for the following day.

Hairs coming out of the brush

If you get a brush bristle in your paintwork,

don’t try to pick it out with your fingers.

Turn the brush and gently pick up the

bristle with the very edge of the brush.

Even very small bits of hair and bristle can

be picked up in this way.

How to keep your paint roller tray perfectly clean while painting

Before you load your paint roller tray,

wrap a plastic bag all around and over it,

so that when you're finished painting or

even changing colour, all you have to do is

throw away the bag (safely) and your tray

is spotless!

Flies stuck on newly painted surfaces

Don’t try and pick the flies out of the wet

paint. Leave the paint to dry overnight and

the flies can be wiped away with a damp

cloth next day without leaving a trace.

Paint Wrinkling

This is caused by applying a second coat

before the first one is dry or applying in

strong, bright, direct sunlight. Sand down

until smooth and re-paint.

Dealing with leftover paint

At the end of a job there is typically

always paint leftover. Ideally we would

like to buy exactly the quantity we need

for each job, but some excess products are

unavoidable.

Rather than stack half-empty cans in the

corner of your garage, where they take up

space and over time may become

unusable, dispense the leftover paint into

smaller airtight containers, i.e. jam jars or

Tupperware containers. Label them up i.e.

Dulux soft cream No3 - silk emulsion

(lounge). This way you will reduce the

amount of storage space taken and have

reference to your paints for those moments

when the room is in need of a quick touch

up of any scuffs.

To celebrate the launch of our new book - Your Canvey Memories - which

tells you all about what it was like to live on Canvey Island in the old days,

here is a picture of the Dutch Cottage for you to colour in.

Did You Know...... There were originally three Dutch Cottages or Roundhouses on Canvey Island that we know

about. This one is the oldest and you can see it is dated 1618. People still lived in this

cottage until the 20th century. It was turned into a Museum in 1962.

The second cottage at the top of Haven Road is privately owned and the third was destroyed

many years ago.

There are also some replica Dutch cottages on the Island - 2 near Ellesmere Road and a

larger one on Ferndale Crescent.

This season just gets better and better. At the time of writing we sit 3rd in the table with all clubs having just 3 games left.

We certainly are taking nothing for granted as

there are still 8 or 9 clubs that could finish in

a play off position so the lads need to keep

performing right to the very last kick of the

season to earn the chance of a play off place

and a possible promotion to the Blue Square

South Division.

Sutton United have already won the league so

the rest of us are battling for positions 2nd to

5th inclusive with the team that finishes 2nd

having home advantage against the 5th

placed team and the 3rd place team having

home advantage against the 4th place team.

The same scenario applies to the final play

off game with the team achieving the highest

league position of the two getting home

advantage.

The support our fans have given us over the

past month has been superb and has definitely

helped contribute to our recent excellent

performances.

Off the pitch we kicked off our weekly bingo

evening at the club. It takes place every

Sunday at 6pm with cash prizes and a chance

to win big money in our Key Box game.

Other events are planned throughout the

summer so please keep an eye on our official

website.

Hope to see you down at the Brockwell

Stadium soon.

Come on you yellooooows

While playing away at Folkestone Invicta fireworks shot into the sky just as our forward Jason Hallet, seen

celebrating with captain Matt Game, scored our goal. Our

club photographer Paul Chesterton of phcimages.com was on hand to take this great picture. Function

Well, apart from the Easter tour to Torquay (which is as much about having a weekend away as it is rugby) the season is over.

All in all, it has not be a bad year for the

club. The First XV, after being promoted

this year and having a horrendous amount of

injuries since Christmas, finished a credible

mid-table in London Three North East and

the Seconds (Stacks) also finished mid-table

in their league despite losing many players

to the first team. The Thirds, (Gnus)

meanwhile, had a great year winning their

league and making it double when they won

the league cup beating east London 7-0 in

the final. Well done to all involved.

In youth rugby, the under 15s played their

first year in a league and finished 4th. The 8s

and 9s really took off this year ending the

season with over 30 players - this is the

future of the club!

It was the club’s 40th anniversary this year

and on Sat 13th April, a rugby fest was held

at the club and it turned out to be a fantastic

day. The weather was kind to us and at

10.30am, the 8s and 9s played 5 games

against a side from Burnham (ten min each

way.) They won 3, drew 1 and lost 1. At

11.30am the under 15s played a full game

against Basildon under 15s and came off the

pitch with a fine 52-31 win. 1.30pm saw a

club side play a touring side from Leicester -

bolstered by some Rochford players with the

club side running out 42-0 winners. The main

event of the day was at 3pm when the Canvey

Vets played an invitation Vets team. This

team consisted of Canvey players that had

moved on and old adversaries from various

club around Essex.

Throughout the day the Bouncy Castles and

barbecues were in constant use. Castle Point

MP Rebbecca Harris and County Councillor

Ray Howard spent a few hours at the

festivities and were pleasantly surprised by

the family orientated day. In the evening, it

was time to pack the kids off home and

complete the day with a disco. To the bar and

kitchen staff, who had been hard at it all day,

we give our thanks and to everyone who

helped make this a day to remember thank

you!

May 1961 - You Bet!

On May 1st 1961 the Betting and Gaming

Act came into force and the first betting

shops opened in the UK.

Prior to January 1st of that year, the laws

surrounding gambling were inconsistent.

The Act was brought in with the aim of

taking gambling off the streets and bringing

it under tighter Government control. Prior to

the Act, anyone wanting to place a bet on a

horse had to demonstrate that they had

enough credit to set up an account, and then

complete their dealings by telephone. The

bookies sent “runners” to collect from

punters. This system was open to abuse.

Once the Act was in place, a bookmaker had

to apply for a licence and permit and was

then allowed to take bets. Unfortunately,

loopholes in the law meant that anyone

could open a betting shop or casino, and

many became a cover for criminal activity.

So, in 1970 the Government legislated again,

creating a new Gaming Act which tightened

restrictions considerably.

Since that time, there has been further

legislation to allow the creation of a National

Lottery and an increase in the number of

casinos.

5th May 1930 - Amy Johnson set off on her solo flight

Amy Johnson, at the age of 26, was the first

woman to fly alone from England to

Australia. Born in 1903, Amy became a

pioneering aviator who set numerous long-

distance records during the 1930s.

In May 1930, she set off from Croydon in a

Gipsy Moth aircraft called “Jason” and landed

in Darwin on 24th May - a flight of about

11,000 miles.

In 1940, during the Second World War,

Johnson joined the Air Transport Auxiliary,

whose job was to transport Royal Air Force

aircraft around the country. On 5 January

1941, while flying an Airspeed Oxford for the

ATA, she went off course in adverse weather

conditions. Reportedly out of fuel, she

drowned after bailing out into the Thames

Estuary. Although she was seen alive in the

water, a rescue attempt failed and her body

was never recovered.

Waterside Farm Pool

Members of the Policy and

Development group have been giving

representations on the future of

Waterside Pool and sports facilities

as a whole. You may have seen

reports in the local press that at the

first meeting of this group, the

Conservative Councillors suggested

making our Sports centre a “dry

venue” - in other words to get rid of

the pool.

This suggestion was immediately

challenged by all of the Independent

councillors. Councillor Grace

Watson suggested that instead of

closing Waterside’s facilities they

should shut Runnymede pool on the

Mainland instead - the

renovation of which has

run well over budget and

has taken money that was

to have been spent on

Waterside.

The Canvey Island

Independent Party wish

to make it clear - the

swimming pool at

Waterside MUST be

saved.

Why is it that Canvey

always loses things? Why

does the money seem to

run out when it comes to Canvey? It

seems that the Conservatives are only

interested in the Mainland - they

leave us with the bread crumbs.

We will never agree to the shutting

of our pool - we will fight to keep

the pool with every method we can.

Thank you. Councillor Neville

Watson (Winter Gardens Ward)

Going out to enjoy the weather?

Fantastic weather is being enjoyed by

all of us but PLEASE do not make it

a great opportunity for thieves. Make

sure you lock your doors and close

your windows when you go out -

opportunist thieves are quick to

notice. Don’t make their day!
