The Benfleet Horticultural Society currently has 600 members and provides a meeting place for like-minded gardeners to discuss any problems they may have and hopefully find the answers.
The society was formed in 1920 and is
served by an active committee who manage
the running of a store, organize three flower
shows a year, organise club and quiz nights,
produce a year book and newsletters and
arrange one or two coach trips a year.
The Store
The store at Cemetery Corner, Benfleet
provides the finance to run the society and is
staffed by volunteers with a wealth of
gardening experience. Prices are kept to an
absolute minimum wherever possible. The shop stocks a full range of basket plants
including Fuscias, trailing and upright
Geraniums, Begonias and many others. A
good selection of bedding plants is also
available such as Buzy Lizzy, Marigolds and
Pansies.
In the vegetable range, there are at least 5
varieties of tomato, runner beans, 3 types of
cucumber, marrows and courgettes to name
but a few.
Membership is open to everyone who has an
interest in growing plants, flowers and
vegetables for food or for showing. The cost
of joining the society is just £2 a year per
household and you would normally expect to
save this amount with your first purchase in
the shop.

Countdown to Christmas
I’m sorry to be the first person to mention the C word! We all complain about Christmas getting earlier every year with shops starting to display their Christmas products from the very beginning of September but it really is a good idea in these times of financial difficulty to start planning early.
Here are some tips that you can put into
action now to get organised and start early to
help avoid getting into financial difficulties.
1. It’s never too early to start shopping
The great thing about starting Christmas
shopping early is you will beat the crowds.
You will be able to do more shopping in half
the time because there will not be any
queues at the checkouts! You will probably
find some great deals as well as shops try to
reduce their stock to make room for special
Christmas products.
Don’t forget to start stocking up on food as
well. If you buy your frozen goods ahead of
time you will not have to worry about the
Christmas rush at the supermarket. Anything
you can do ahead of time will help take the
stress off last-minute preparations.2. Start
saving now It’s amazing to see how fast even small
savings can add up. Don’t get into a negative
mindset about how much you can put away –
just get started! As you start saving you may
want to consider looking for a way to
increase your savings as you go along.
Perhaps you can sell some old treasures you
have lying around the house at a car boot
sale or on Ebay.
3. Set up a budget It is a good idea to have a Christmas budget
that you can work with so that you can stay
on track for the next couple of months. If
you need more decorations, a special outfit
for a party and more food for visitors this
should all be taken into account along with
the expenses for gifts. Don’t forget to plan
for unexpected expenses as well. If you have
a little extra tucked away you’ll be able to
relax more and enjoy Christmas the way
they it is meant to be enjoyed.
4. Make a list Prepare a list of all the people you need to
buy a present for and place it on a wall in
your house where you can see it. This will
keep Christmas shopping on your mind, and
as you work towards crossing names off the
list, it will become a game
and your shopping will get
done early. Sometimes
early Christmas shopping
can be planned and then
forgotten about as
Christmas approaches.
It is never too early to plan
for Christmas. Remember
how you felt last year with
the last minute Christmas
rush and make sure it
doesn’t happen again this
year by doing some careful
budgeting and planning.

University of the Third Age
Your invitation to join the Benfleet group of
the U3A
The U3A is an exciting and friendly
organisation which enables members to share
numerous and varied educational, creative and
leisure activities and make new friends.
About the U3A
U3A stands for the University of the Third
Age, which is a self-help organisation for
people no longer in full time employment
providing educational, creative and leisure
opportunities in a friendly environment. It
consists of local U3As all over the UK, which
are charities in their own right and are run
entirely by volunteers.
Local U3As are learning cooperatives which
draw upon the knowledge, experience and
skills of their own members to organise and
provide interest groups in accordance with the
wishes of the membership. The U3A offer
the chance to study over 300 different subjects
in such fields as art, languages, music, history,
life sciences, philosophy, computing, crafts,
photography and walking. A typical U3A has
about 250 members but could be as small as
12 and as large as 2000.
The Benfleet Group held its inaugural
monthly meeting in July. At the first meeting
a committee was formed and members were
asked to suggest activities of interest to
them. As a result, approximately
16 individual groups have already been
formed covering topics as diverse eg Local
History, Family History, crafts, gardening,
ten-pin bowling, IT, walking, luncheon
club, meditation. Additional groups will be
arranged when a number of members
request them and when there are the
sufficient skills available within the
membership to run these groups.
Monthly meetings are held on the last Tuesday of each month at 2:00-4:00pm in Richmond Hall. In addition
there will be a 45 minute talk by an
external speaker on a variety of different
subjects. Groups covering specific
interests are held on various days and times
either monthly or more frequently as
required. Groups covering specific interests

weight is a mentor that has been there, done
that! If, like me, you are constantly fighting
with your weight what you need is someone

that is what inspires people who attend my
meetings. I don’t stand there saying how easy
it is to lose weight - I tell them that I have
been there and am still there and hope to
inspire people that they too can lose weight
and keep it off. It’s not easy but through my
experience, I can help people to achieve their
goals.”

September in History
12th September 1878
On this day, Cleopatra’s Needle - an
Egyptian obelisk was erected on the Thames
Embankment.
One of an identical pair (the other is in
Central Park, New York,) Cleopatra's Needle
was presented to the United Kingdom in
1819 by the ruler of Egypt and Sudan -
Muhammed Ali Pasha. It was a gift to
commemorate the victories of Lord Nelson
at the Battle of the Nile and Sir Ralph
Abercromby at the battle of Alexandria in
1801.
The obelisk is almost 3,500 years old and
was originally built for the Pharaoh Thotmes
III in 1460BC. It is carved with
hieroglyphics praising Thotmes and
commemorating his festival. So why is it
called Cleopatra’s Needle when it actually
has nothing to do with her? It was brought
to London from Alexandria which is
the Royal City of Cleopatra.
13th September 1916
One of the greatest storytellers for
children of the 20th century, Roald
Dahl was born today in Cardiff to
Norwegian parents. His birthday is
celebrated around the world every year
with Roald Dahl Day. This year’s Roald
Dahl Day will also celebrate 50 years of one
of Dahl’s most famous books - James and the
Giant Peach.
Although most famous for his children’s
stories, Dahl’s first published work in 1942
was a story for adults about his wartime
adventures that appeared in The Saturday
Evening Post. His first children’s book was
The Gremlins - a tale about mischievous
creatures that were part of RAF folklore. His
stories were usually told from a child’s point
of view with the villains often being adults
who were cruel and mistreated children. Dahl
went on to write some of the world’s best
loved books including Charlie and the
Chocolate Factory, The BFG, Matilda, The
Witches and George’s Marvellous Medicine.
Roald Dahl died on 23rd September 1990 at
the age of 73 from a type of blood disease.

This month, Michael Clark (Registered Osteopath, Nutrition & Holistic Lifestyle Coach) discusses top tips for healthy weight loss.
NEVER go on a diet
Dieting refers to a dietary restriction of calorie
intake. Depriving the body of calories or any
important nutrient such as fat, protein etc may
cause initial weight loss, however the body
cannot tell the difference between a restriction
of calories from a diet or starvation and will
quickly kick into survival mode. According to
the World Health Organisation “starvation
begins below 2100 calories per day.” Below
this level fat storage will increase and your
ability to burn fat will reduce. Research has
shown low calorie diets at least DOUBLE fat
storing enzymes and cause fat cells to literally
grow larger, in addition your body will
HALVE your fat releasing enzymes. This
means you are twice as efficient at storing fat
and half as efficient at releasing and shrinking
your fat cells. Furthermore your body will try
to conserve energy, avoiding calorie burning
by slowing the metabolism and breaking
down muscle tissue.
NEVER skip breakfast
Skipping meals is common mistake in an
attempt to try and achieve a healthy
weight. Every time you skip a meal your
body responds by increasing fat storage as
a means of survival. The more regularly
we skip meals the more efficient the body
will become at storing fat making it
progressively more difficult to lose
weight particularly for women who are
genetic pre-programmed to be more
efficient at storing fat than men.
NEVER go on a fat-free diet
There is a huge amount of misinformation
regarding the roles of fats in health and body
weight. The most common is ‘eating fat will
make you fat’- this is simply untrue. Quite the
opposite, research has shown that when
women diet, those eating the lowest level of
fat weigh the most. The quality of the fat is
the key. Grass-fed organic beef and beef fat,
naturally raised lamb, organic raw dairy
products (butter, cheese, milk, cream) and
coconut oil are the best. QUALITY fats have
many health benefits such as:
Fat and quality protein satisfies hunger for
longer reducing the chances of over eating
or making poor food choices.
 Helping build healthy hormones
Supporting the immune system due to
antiviral agents (caprylic acid.)
Healthy brain and nerve function (the
brain is mainly made of fat and
cholesterol.)
Stronger bones (fat is required for calcium
to be effectively incorporated into the
bones.)
Fat is a huge subject which I cannot go to into
enough detail here. For more information I
suggest reading the book Eat Fat, Lose Fat by

visiting www.mercola.com and entering ‘The
Truth About Saturated Fat’ in the search
engine.
DRINK plenty of water
It’s common to mistake thirst for hunger.
Drinking plenty of quality water regularly
throughout the day will speed up your
metabolism and decrease snaking. It can be
difficult initially to remember to drink water.
Carrying a bottle of water with you will help.
If you find it difficult to drink plenty of water
then start with a small bottle and gradually
increase your intake until you are drinking a
large bottle or more every day.
EAT high quality food
As I have stated in previous articles to achieve
good health and optimum weight it is essential
to consume the highest quality foods possible.
This includes fresh seasonal vegetables, soil
association organic whenever possible, free
range meats, wild caught fish etc.
EXERCISE regularly
Muscle cells are very metabolically active.
This means to keep a muscle cell alive in your
body requires approximately 14x more energy
than to have a fat cell. Muscles burn energy
around the clock even when sleeping therefore
reducing excess fat stores. Strength training is
more effective at maintaining lean muscle
mass and low visceral fat levels than
cardiovascular training. Women can easily
stay slim and gain lean muscle tone without
becoming overly big by incorporating strength
training. Sports men and women such as
gymnasts, figure skaters, power lifters etc.
perform high levels of strength training and
low levels of cardio training but have among
the lowest visceral fat levels in sport.
GET quality rest and sleep
Establish a healthy balance between exercise
with rest, relaxation and quality sleep.
Insufficient rest and too much stress are
associated with an accumulation of fat
around the mid-section. Achieving a good
night sleep and going to bed earlier will help
you wake up feeling alert, refreshed and
reduce the cravings of sugar and caffeine to
get you going. Unwinding with a relaxing
book, listening to music, having a bath, and
anything that makes you feel relaxed has
been shown to help weight loss.
Achieving an ideal body weight is all about
incorporating healthy lifestyle choices rather
than depriving the body of nutrients and
over exercising.

coaching programme entitled
Money Breakthrough Method.
The lady who started the
programme is dedicated to
helping women to earn good
income by doing what they love,
something that has become my
mission too, in addition to my
therapy work of course!
In the programme we looked at
our deepest beliefs about money,
what we’d heard about it as children from
parents, teachers and other people we
respected. For instance, you may believe that
rich people are unpopular and dishonest and
it’s better to be poor and honest. Or you
might have seen that money is hard to come
by, you have to work REALLY hard for it
and it can disappear in an instant, leaving
you destitute so you should never spend
anything. I discovered that the ideas and
beliefs I had taken on as my own, were
running my life and not in ways that were
making me happy or successful in business.
The course had a profound effect on my life;
it brought on a big financial crisis that I had
to tackle head on. I went from being scared
to check my bank account to knowing
exactly what goes in and out and keeping a
daily check on everything financial. Drama
around money is exhausting and stressful
and now I help my students set up systems
so they know exactly what is going on.
Then we can relax, concentrate on earning
money, paying off any debts we have
accumulated and get on with enjoying life!
If you would like to learn more and find
your happy relationship with money, I’m

There aren’t many subjects that are more emotional than money. The way we run our finances mirrors the rest of our life. If your finances are a pickle, the chances are that other areas of your life are too! However, all is not lost! After a crisis in my own financial life last year, I discovered that, with a few adjustments, we can have a much happier relationship with money.
I’ve been self employed for 18 years and in
recent years, my income hadn’t gone up at all.
I kept thinking I was doing something wrong and would try to fix the problem by working
harder. Frustrated, broke and curious, I started
investigating what was in my way and why
some people earn plenty of money with ease
and some just don’t. What a revelation!
I always thought that I had difficulty charging
for my services and raising my prices and as I
had come from my nursing, NHS background
where we’re not used to billing our patients
personally for caring for them. I realised that
was just a little bit of the issue as a lot of
business people have the same challenge. The
real barrier was me, Rosemary and how I
valued myself and what do. On a deep level, I
didn’t think what I did was good enough to be
well paid for my work.
In my research, I discovered an incredible
