Improving Our ParksHarborcreek Township and the S.O.N.S of Lake Erie have partnered in building a new Family Fishing Pavilion at Harborcreek Community Park. The new pavilion located near MacQuarrie’s Pond is for visitors of the park to enjoy. The S.O.N.S of Lake Erie generously donated $4000 to assist in the building of the new shelter and Harborcreek Township personnel built the entire structure. Picnic tables, courtesy of Eagle Scout Dom Scarpino (see page 17), have been placed under the pavilion and a flagstone walkway and steps, courtesy of Afton Landscape Supply, has been installed already and final landscaping will occur later this Fall. Harborcreek Township would once again thank the S.O.N.S of Lake Erie for their generous contribution to your parks.

In The CommunityOld Man Winter Will Eventually ReturnWe certainly don’t want to rush the winter weather in but here are a few tips regarding Harborcreek Township Winter/Snow removal operations.

While snowplow drivers never intend to damage lawns located within the township right of way – when a driver is operating a vehicle that weighs in excess of 20 ton, there is the possibility that the wing of the plow may encroach into your lawn – which, please remember, is still in the right of way. To assist the drivers, you may want to

install a few flexible plow markers in your yard. Also remember that the purpose of snow plowing is to remove snow from the roadway. Drivers do not intentionally “plow in” driveways. In addition, please see the Mailbox Installation regulations so that plow wings can remove snow effectively.

A reminder that parking along Township Roads or in the adjacent right of way is prohibited between October 15 and April 15 of each year for the purpose of snow and ice clearing by township personnel. We ask for your compliance with Ordinance 39-1966-1.

Recently, we’ve seen an increased interest in mindfulness, although the concept itself is thousands of years old. Essentially, being mindful means you are living very much in the present, highly conscious of your thoughts and feelings. However, being mindful doesn’t mean acting on those thoughts and feelings – it’s just the opposite. With mindfulness, your decision-making is based on cognitive skills and a

rational perspective, rather than emotions. As such, mindfulness can be quite valuable as you make investment decisions.

Two of the most common emotions or tendencies associated with investing are fear and greed. Let’s see how they can affect investors’ behavior.

• When investors are fearful … Investors’ biggest fear is losing money. So, how did many of them respond during the steep market decline from late 2007 through early 2009? They began selling off their stocks and stock-based mutual funds and fled for “safer” investments, such as Treasury bills and certificates of deposit. But mindful investors witnessed the same situation and saw something else: a great buying opportunity. By looking past the fear of losing money, they recognized the chance to buy quality investments at bargain prices. And they were rewarded for their patience, long-term perspective and refusal to let fear govern their decisions, because 10 years after the market bottomed out in March 2009 (as measured by the Dow Jones Industrial Average), it had risen about 300 percent.

• When investors are greedy … We only have to go back a few years before the 2007-09 bear market to see a classic example of greed in the investment world. From 1995 to early 2000, investors chased after almost any company that had “dot com” in its name, even companies with no business plans, no assets and, in some cases, no products. Yet, the rising stock prices of these companies led more and more investors to buy shares in them, causing a greed-driven vicious circle – more demand led to higher prices, which led to more demand. But the bubble burst in March 2000, and by October 2002, the technology-dominated Nasdaq stock index had fallen more than 75%. And since some of these companies not only lost value, but went out of business, many investors never recouped their investments.

To avoid the dangers of fear and greed, take these steps:

• Know your investments. Make sure you understand what you’re investing in. Know the fundamentals, such as the quality of the product or service, the skill of the management team, the state of the industry, whether the stock is priced fairly or overvalued, and so on. The better informed you are, the less likely you’ll be to chase after “hot” investments or to bail out on good ones.

• Rebalance when necessary. If you’ve decided your portfolio should contain certain percentages of stocks, bonds and other vehicles, stick to those percentages and rebalance when necessary.

• Keep investing. Ups and downs are a normal feature of the investment landscape. By continuing to invest over time, rather than stopping and starting, you can reduce the effects of volatility on your portfolio.

It’s not always easy to be a mindful investor and to avoid letting emotions drive your decisions – but it’s well worth the effort.

Volunteer Fire DepartmentsBrookside Fire Department UpdateWe hope that as you read this update from the Brookside Volunteer Fire Company you and your family are well and healthy. During these difficult and trying times we want to assure our residents that we are still here serving the community in your time of need.

We have heard from many of our patients that they had been very hesitant to call an ambulance for fear of going to the hospital and catching the Corona Virus. Please do not hesitate to call an ambulance if you have a medical emergency. Do not put your physical health in jeopardy.

Also we are in the middle of our annual fund drive. This is our biggest fund raiser of the year. This pays the bills and keeps the volunteer fire

department running throughout the year. With the pandemic all of our other fund raisers have been cancelled. Please continue to support the Brookside Volunteer Fire Company as we continue to serve you in the future.

We are always looking for additional volunteers to add to our ranks. If you are interested in joining the Brookside Fire Company or just want to check us out stop by the station on Tuesday evenings, which is our drill night, and we will be glad to show you around.

Again, we thank you for your continued support of the Brookside Volunteer Fire Company. Serving the community that we live and work in is both a privilege and an honor that we do not take lightly. Until next time, stay safe and stay healthy.

Harborcreek Historical SocietyA Look Back At Gannondale, A Home For Girls In NeedProvided by the Harborcreek Historical Society One of Harborcreek Township’s most recognizable landmarks rests on about 75 acres of land on East Lake Road just a half mile east of the boundary with Lawrence Park. The main building on the property sits stately at the top of the arch of a half-circle driveway and gives the appearance of an old school or monastery. Well, it was both. The building is the old central administration building of Gannondale, a residential rehabilitation center for troubled girls run by the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity.

Gannondale began in 1934 at the prompting of Bishop John Mark Gannon, who was intent on creating a program aimed at caring for teenage girls and expanding the charities program of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Erie that, at the time, included St. Joseph’s Home for Children, Erie Day Nursery, Saint Mary’s Home, and the Harborcreek Training School for Boys. An order of Sisters of Our Lady of Charity of the North American Union in Pittsburgh was invited by Bishop Gannon to lead the new program because of their long history of helping young women. The order’s origins can be traced to the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity of Refuge, a congregation of religious women founded in Caen, France whose original purpose was to provide shelter for women of dissolute behavior, but it was later changed to include the care and training of neglected, dependent teenage girls. Congregations in the United States commonly run residential homes for women, nursing homes, day care centers, pastoral ministries, outreach programs, and programs offering care to immigrants.

As a result of Bishop Gannon’s efforts, a new congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity was established in Erie, and the group purchased the property on East Lake Road, which included several small farmhouses that were quickly converted into residence halls. The new youth-centered charity was named Gannondale in honor of Bishop Gannon and was founded on the premise that all youth deserve to be treated with dignity and respect and have access to the best possible care and treatment, which would restore a sense of dignity, self-worth, and self-esteem. It was to cater to girls ages 10-21 (later changed to ages 12-18) who were in trouble with the law, suffering from abuse, or with family problems. Gannondale welcomed its first residents in May 1934 under the leadership of Mother Agnes Dunn (1934-1953), and the first mass was said in June.

Gannondale’s iconic central administration building was built just four years later in 1938. It included a monastery that served as a home for the sisters, a chapel, chaplain’s quarters, administrative offices, an interim

residence for up to 12 youth, and a kitchen that was used to produce communion wafers for several Roman Catholic dioceses.

Once the administration building was constructed, Gannondale operated from three units: the administration building and two farmhouses, or residential cottages. Each cottage had the capacity to accommodate up to 14 youth and a supervising “House Mother,” who was a sister that had received specialized training in social work. Amenities on the grounds included gardens, tennis courts, a hockey field, and access to nearby Bella Vista Beach.

An early write-up about the program described Gannondale as follows:

In physical aspect Gannondale has been made to resemble the residential district of any modern village. It is built on the cottage plan, the houses resembling as nearly as possible the homes in which each girl may live after she has returned to her own community. The best work for the underprivileged can be done in simple home-like buildings, because they offer less institutionalism and repression and offer spontaneous activity on the part of the student.

These like those of middle-class homes in an average community will be administered according to the newest trends in social welfare.

Each morning the Gannondale girls are taught to assist at Holy Mass and are assigned to various light house duties. Together, then, they leave their community to begin an active school day. The girls are enrolled as regular students in the Grade School and High School in the vicinity, wherein they receive the usual fundamental, academic training. In addition, under the special training of Gannondale, they are instructed in specialized work as home-making, marketing, household management, cooking, table service, and home gardening. They are further introduced to suitable recreation both physical and mental as athletics of all types, swimming, dramatics, and choral singing, secular and sacred. In inclement weather indoor recreation includes: games, concerts, moving pictures, radio programs, hours of leisure reading, and lectures suited to the age of the students. In these, the administration of Gannondale realizes the necessity of varied recreation as a solution to behavior problems.

As mentioned in this write-up, Gannondale’s residents were enrolled in the Harbor Creek School District, and they traveled to and from school with neighboring classmates, participating in extra-curricular activities according to their interests and readiness. Shopping trips, visits for medical or other professional care, and volunteering their time for service were a few other ways Gannondale residents got involved in

the Harborcreek community.

Permissions to leave campus with family or chaperoned by staff, alone or with friends, or on a date was determined by each girl’s readiness and progress. When appropriate, girls were permitted, and even encouraged,

When the East Lake Road property was purchased by the Sisters of Our Lady ofCharity, it included several existing farmhouses. This house was one of two of Gannondale’s first residence halls, and it was known as Bethany Cottage.

The farmhouse was replaced with a new Bethany Cottage in 1969.

13

to visit their homes, as the program encouraged parents to be actively involved in the girls’ treatment.

The ‘60s and ‘70s were decades of growth for Gannondale. Cana Cottage was built in 1960. One of the old farmhouses was replaced in 1965 with the new Nazareth Cottage, and a second house was replaced in 1969 with the new Bethany Cottage. The 10-bed New Horizons Intensive Treatment Unit (ITU) was finished in 1976. It was the first secure, locked building on the campus, and it was necessitated by the center receiving an increasing number

of girls with more severe and violent behavior issues. With these four residential units, the total capacity of Gannondale grew to 53 residents.

The center’s treatment program, which employed a milieu therapy approach that used residents’ surroundings to encourage healthier ways of thinking and behaving, was designed for teenage girls who had experienced family violence, neglect, physical abuse, sexual or emotional abuse, substance abuse, and whose related behavioral problems were so severe that they could no longer remain in a traditional home or school setting. The treatment program was not intended for girls who were pregnant, pre-psychotic, addicted to drugs, or socially diseased. Girls were placed at Gannondale by local courts and county offices of children and youth services, with the basic costs of care reimbursed to the center by counties on a per diem basis. While some

residents were from Erie, the vast majority were assigned or placed by courts in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia for an average length of stay of 6-9 months.

In addition to the sisters, Gannondale maintained a professional staff of 75, at its largest, that included social workers, therapists in childcare and development, a director of therapeutic activities, and psychiatric, psychological, and vocational rehabilitation consultants. A lay Advisory Board made up of members of the community made recommendations and provided guidance for the leadership of the center.

With all its successes, Gannondale was not able to overcome several challenges, and, in 2014, the leadership made the difficult decision to close the center. The following excerpt is from a letter written by Gannondale Executive Director Nancy Sabol (2004-2014) – only the fifth person to fill that role – dated March 4, 2014 and addressed to staff, donors, and the Harborcreek community. The letter announced that the center would permanently close on June 30th and summarized the circumstances leading to this decision.

This has been a difficult decision, but it is the right one. Over the past several years, the child welfare and juvenile justice systems have changed dramatically. A philosophical shift has led to more children remaining within the community, whether in foster care, group homes, or receiving in-home treatment with their families. Residential care as we have known it is no longer being utilized as it once was and, honestly, for the past seven or eight years counties have not supported the actual cost of care. That means that the Sisters and the generosity of donors such as yourself have subsidized this program.

As the Sisters, Board, and Administration discussed the future of Gannondale, and as we met with longtime friends and supporters, it became clear that while our work may not be finished, we have taken it as far as we can. Communities of religious women are aging. Resources are scarce. The youth coming into the system are older and more damaged from a lack or failure of early intervention.

As we say farewell, we offer our gratitude one last time to you. You have given of your time, your financial resources, your expertise, and your prayers – in some small way we hope we have left footprints on your hearts as well.

Gannondale closed in its 80th year after helping a few thousand girls find acceptance, understanding and guidance, develop their strengths and interests, and assume a greater degree of personal responsibility.

In 2018, the old Gannondale property was purchased by the nonprofit Snug Harbor Rehabilitation & Recovery for $1M. The center is again being used for residential treatment programs, this time for those seeking assistance ending drug or alcohol dependency.

The Harborcreek Historical Society’s Gifford-Blanchfield House is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. Visitors are required to wear masks and adhere to physical distancing guidelines. For additional information, contact us at (814) 899-4447 or [email protected], or visit our website at www.harborcreekhistory.org.

“Whether you’re starting a family or nearing retirement, life insurance is an important consideration,” says Robin Margosian, Laskowski Insurance Agency. “Understanding what is best for you can be confusing so I talk to customers to help find which options benefit them the most, at any stage of life.”

Term life insurance provides coverage for a specific number of years and you select the “term.” Some general things to know about term life insurance are:

• You have the option of choosing how long and coverage amounts.

• Plans usually come in 5, 10, 15, 20 or 30-year packages.

• It provides the most coverage for the lowest cost.

• Some policies come with an option to convert to permanent insurance.

S1942 01/20

Life is always changing, which is why it’s important to review your insurance needs and make sure your coverage is keeping up with your life.

To learn more about life insurance and discuss options for you and your family, contact:

the period of the policy.

“There are several reasons why people choose term life insurance,” says Robin Margosian. “I run through some scenarios to talk over what you should plan for should something happen.”

• Consider how much money your family would need without your income in the picture. Consider rent, utilities, groceries, car payment or childcare expenses so your family can maintain the lifestyle they are used to.

• Mortgage protection – Having life insurance in place can allow your family to continue in the home they know and love at a very difficult time in their lives.

“Whole life insurance, a type of permanent life insurance, is designed to last your lifetime,” says Robin Margosian. “That means your family is protected for the duration of your life. In addition to providing financial protection, whole life policies build cash value which allows you an opportunity to build your wealth.”

Some things to know about whole life insurance:

• Provides coverage for your entire life and will not decrease regardless of changes in your health.

• It accumulates cash value that you can

borrow in the future, which would then decrease the death benefit amount.

“I often get asked, ‘when would I need whole life insurance?’” says Robin Margosian. “While a term life plan can be a great start for life insurance protection in your 30s and 40s, the best approach is often a blend of term and permanent life insurance that provides lifelong coverage and builds cash value.”

“In your 50s and up, you may have entered the ‘sandwich generation’ meaning you might care for elderly parents while financially supporting college students or

Quick and Easy Health HabitsDebbie DeAngelo, RNC, BSN Holistic Health [email protected] Every single choice you make impacts your physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. When it comes to healthy habits, they don’t have to be overwhelming to be effective. Here are a few small changes that can have a big impact on your health.

Do the bird dog. This exercise tones your core while improving balance, posture and strengthening your back. Lower down onto your hands and knees on a carpeted floor or exercise mat. Your hands should be beneath your shoulders, your spine should not be sagging, or arching and your neck should be in a neutral position. Simultaneously extend your right arm in front of you and your left leg behind you. Hold for ten seconds and then lower. Repeat with your left arm and right leg.

Kick off your kicks at the door. From public restrooms to chemically treated lawns, your shoes serve as a blueprint of your day. Removing your shoes at the door prevents you from tracking in whatever you’ve stepped in. Unless you want fertilizer in your kitchen, lead dust in the living room and road sealant in your bedroom, politely ask everyone entering your home to place their shoes on a mat next to the door. Cleaning Fido’s paws every time he comes in helps too.

Expose cell phone’s dirty little secret.Research shows that your electronic bestie is 10 times filthier than your commode. This is in part due to all the traveling it does each day. From grocery carts to door handles to gas pumps, our cell phones accumulate whatever germs you collect on your hands, as well as those of the surface on which they lay. On a daily basis, wipe it down with a disinfectant product specifically made for electronics.

Healthy Around HarborcreekPitch plastic water bottles.Disposable water bottles were originally intended for “on the go” convenience but now they have morphed into a continuous companion. The more time our water, and food, is in contact with plastic, the more chemicals from the bottle leach into the water. Add the warm temperature of transporting cases of water cross country, storing them in warehouses, and sitting in your car during the summer, and the chemical load increases significantly. Buy a reusable glass or stainless-steel water bottle. Be sure stainless-steel models don’t have a plastic interior lining.

Clear out your medicine cabinet. When’s the last time you did this? The purpose is two-fold. First, dispose of outdated medicine and first aid supplies. They don’t last forever and will lose effectiveness. Second, take stock of supplies you many need to replenish as well as those you may need for the upcoming cold and flu season. Winter symptoms that commonly need treated include sore throat, cough, head and body aches, fever, sinus congestion, nausea, and diarrhea. When you’re sick or injured, the last thing you feel like doing is running to the store for medication or first aid supplies.

Tune out the news.Between social media and broadcast venues, we can be inundated with news 24/7. Since it’s almost exclusively distressing, it often leaves people feeling worried, moody, and down in the dumps. There’s a fine line between remaining informed and immersing yourself in negativity. Set limits for the frequency and sources of daily news to which you are exposed. You won’t miss out on vital current events because they all find their way to us in a timely matter these days whether we want them to or not.
