By AIDAN CORRRugby Correspondentwww.limerickrugby.ieIT is not that alone they stand asLimerickÕs only representatives indivision one A of the Ulster Bank All-Ireland League this season, but thereis going to be keen interest in YoungMunsterÕs performances over thecoming months. With the pendulum swinging infavour of the Pale in recent seasons, the trophy has not rested byShannonside since 2009 whenShannon lifted it for the ninth time in19 campaigns. Garryowen werecrowned champions three times, 1992,1994 and 2007, and while YoungMunsterÕs day of glory came in 1993,they are hungry for a second success. But the black and ambers thrive onadversity, a characteristic that wasclearly evident in that AIL decider inLansdowne Road against a fancied St.MaryÕs 21 years ago. This season theodds are again against them but withthe competition returning to the moreexciting top four qualifiers system,ÔMunstersÕ could well be in therunning when the last four places areup for grabs next April.Limerick rugbyÕs role in the successof the All-Ireland League has beendeservedly acclaimed, but it could besome time before the region returns toits days of domination. A number offactors have contributed to the turn infortunes and for the first time sincethe AILÕs inauguration in season1990/91, this city has only one teamin 1A as well as three in 1B, one in 2Aand three in 2B. The current economicclimate has resulted in players fromalmost every local club being suckedtowards the metropolis and thesouthern hemisphere over the last few

Big challenge for LimerickÕsonly 1A standard bearers . . .

campaigns and many are now wearingthe jerseys of other AIL 1A teams.Since the beginning of this decadethe monetary incentives offered by thebetter off clubs also added to theplayer drain and while this practicehas now been ÔoutlawedÕ by the IRFUsince September, it appears ironic thatthere has been an unprecedentedmovement of players in Munsterduring the recent off-season.Founded in 1895 when Pat Flavinand Michael OÕBrien gathered a teamtogether to win the Tyler Cup, YoungMunster have enjoyed success at alllevels of the game. Over that 119 yearsthey have brought joy, excitement andsuccess to their loyal fans. This seasonthey will once again give their all inevery grade wherever their playersdon the famous black and amberjersey. This is a very special club, withvery special support. This season theyare the lone Limerick standardbearers at the highest level of Irishclub rugby where their indomitablespirit and club pride will once againbe tested.

2013-14 has been another very successfulseason for our Youth Section. Last seasonwe were the only club within the city tofield teams at every age grade from Under6 to Under 18Õs, and along with Bruff RFC,the only two teams in North Munster tofield at all levels. Our Under 18Õs reached four finals,North Munster League final, Pan Munsterfinal, and both Open and Closed NorthMunster Cups, but were most unfortunatenot to win any silverware. Nevertheless, the outstanding commitment and hugeamounts of skill displayed by this verytalented squad of players bodes very wellfor the future of the club.On the representative front, KarlMadden, Ryan Minihan and Ben Betts wereall capped at Youth level by Munster, withBen Betts going on to represent IrelandYouths. Calvin Nash, who won a MunsterSenior Schools Cup medal with CrescentComprehensive last season, was a memberof the very successful Irish Schools Under18 team. Congratulations to all, andhopefully they will go on to furtherhonours and will soon be lining out withYoung Munster Senior XV.The Under 16 team went to France atEaster at the invitation of Neulise Rugby, with whom the Youth Section has built upclose links over the past eight years, andhad a very memorable trip, winning onematch and narrowly losing another againstan older age group. They completed theirseason by winning the annual BrowneShield hosted by Newcastle West RFC.Pride of place goes to our Under 15Õswho won the Under 15 North Munster Cup,following up on their double success of2012/13. The final, played on the backpitch at Thomond Park, was of a standardwhich surely deserved to adorn the mainThomond Park pitch Ñ a fantastic game ofskillful, free-flowing rugby from bothGarryowen and YM, with the Cookiesrunning out 27-25 victors. They alsonarrowly lost the Under 15 league deciderto the same opposition. The Under 14Õs had a good season, showing some very good form towards theend of the season, culminating with a veryenjoyable and successful tour to Wales atEaster. Similarly our 13Õs had a goodleague run, reaching the league semi-finaland cup quarter final, losing out to the

Young Munster Youth Section

eventual double winners Ñ Richmond/Presentation/Newport. At the invitation ofthe IRFU, they competed at the prestigiousFrankfurt Youth Rugby Festival, and boththeir play on the field and behaviour offthe field were favourably commented uponby their German hosts. They also retainedthe Hoare Cup, defeating Old Crescent inMarch. The Under 12Õs retained theLysaght Cup, played on St. StephenÕsmorning at Clifford Park, defeatingRichmond in a cracking match. Our Minis teams competed at officialblitzes and friendly matches throughoutthe season. Training for Minis Ñ (Under 6to Under 12Õs) Ñ is at Clifford Park everySunday morning from 10 to 11.Information on other age grades isavailable from any member of the YouthCommittee. We are fortunate in that we have goodnumbers playing at each age grade, andspecial word of thanks to our coaches andthe parents for their efforts and supportthroughout the season, and most especiallyour colleagues on the Senior Committeefor their help and support.

Beautiful, beautiful Munsters,Star of my soul fade away,I sigh when I think of Young Munster,With whom I played many a game.

Dublin can boast of Old Wesley,Cork of the College and Con,But Limerick can boast of YoungMunster,Whose best games are yet to be seen.

Beautiful, beautiful Munsters,Star of my soul fade away,I sigh when I think of Young Munster,With whom I played many a game.

Now there were Bohs in red, UCC,Garryowen the boys in blue,With Sundays Well, Õtwould be hardto tell,What the Dolphin Boys would do,And Cons all white made a right goodfight,In the final well they showed,

But they all gave it up for theBateman Cup,Was won by the Yellow Road.

Then cheer, boy cheer, for our ownfifteenof black and amber fame,WeÕre a true home team, and havealways beenAnd weÕre proud of Young Munstername,Their task well done, their victorywon,All glory to them is owed,And weÕll sing our song, sing it all daylong,Sing hurrah for the Yellow Road.

You can go up to the BombinÕ Field ona Sunday,Watch the young boys go out totrain,Sure it make an old man about sixty,Play the game over again.
