on behalf of Young Munster Rugby Football Club and all its members and staff, I am absolutely delighted to extend a hearty welcome to all players, officials and supporters visiting Tom Clifford Park throughout this season. Following in the footsteps of my father, Jimmy Cantillon, who held the office of President on two occasions, I feel immensely proud and privileged to have been granted this highest of honours for myself and my family and feel humbled by the challenge that is presented to me.

In our 116 years, we have always prided ourselves on our hospitality and I’m sure this year will be no different. now that the professional game has brought so many changes, it is all the more important that the rugby tradition of friendliness and hospitality is not diminished. I assure you that Young Munster RFC will not be distracted from our endeavours to make your visit a pleasant one. Young Munster RFC is representative of so many of the best virtues of rugby football in Ireland, not least; it’s enduring and invaluable contribution to the community in the area. Last season has been a memorable one for our club, both on and off the field.

on the playing front the club is thriving at all levels and is benefiting from the structures put in place over the last couple of years. The success of our teams is complimented by improvements in our facilities which now include a purpose built all-Weather Pitch and a state-of-the-art gymnasium in Tom Clifford Park. This year, it is our goal to install floodlighting on our main pitch, which will enable us to play games on very popular Friday evenings and other nights when required. During the summer months we have carried out refurbishment works to our main pitch to ensure the best possible playing surface for the coming season and we look forward to watching many games of quality rugby that can be enjoyed by both players and supporters alike.

I would like to wish our Club Captain, shane o’neill, and his squad, our Director of Rugby Mike Prendergast, our assistant Coach John broderick and all other Coaches, Managers, background Personnel, ground and Facilities Personnel, the very best of luck for the coming season and success in their relative competitions. You have our total support.I would also like to thank all those behind the scenes for their hard work and voluntary support for Young Munster and I look forward to working with them in the coming season in generating a new found optimism for Young Munster as a club with real potential.

Here at Young Munster we believe that properly and competitively structured club rugby is imperative for the development of players and the success of Munster and Irish rugby. It is our policy to encourage and develop players of all skills levels at Tom Clifford Park and we are happy to do so into the future. To run a leading first division club these days takes huge effort and a lot of money. as President of the Irish Rugby Football union, I congratulate nay Cantillon in his role as President and extend to all club members my hope that Young Munster RFC have an enjoyable and successful season.

Following the disappointment of being beaten in the semi-final play-offs last season, I have no doubt team captain shane o’neill and his squad will be in determined mood to make another mark in this season’s re-constructed ulster bank League.

I believe the new format, with a record 52 clubs involved in two divisions, will prove to be a very successful one and that it will generate greater interest and activity in the clubs on match days. This would be in keeping with the wishes of the IRFu, whose policy is to maintain a vibrant club scene throughout Irish rugby.

In this regard, I pay tribute to all our volunteers. They make an invaluable contribution to the success of the game and in the current economic circumstances their role is even more important.

I also take this opportunity to thank ulster bank, the official Community Partner to the IRFu, for their sponsorship of the ulster bank League, the Irish Club International team and the ulster bank Rugby Force initiative.

John HusseyPresident – IRFu

* Dublin businessman John Hussey created a piece of sporting history when he becomes the first member from st. Mary’s College RFC (founded 111 years ago) to be enrolled as President of the Irish Rugby Football union, at the union’s annual Council Meeting in the aviva stadium, on July 22nd.

He assumed the highest office in Irish rugby following a life-long association with st. Mary’s College. as a wing threequarters he was a member of the schools’ junior and senior cup teams but on joining the club and being capped for the Leinster junior interprovincial team in 1966, he had his career cut short by a succession of injuries. He was elected President of the club in 1988 – ’89.

a well know chartered accountant, Hussey’s high profile business life includes a 12 years stint as Managing Partner of arthur Young & Company, after which he spent a number of years as a director of two companies involved in structured financing. He was also a consultant to a number of organisations in the areas of governance and strategic planning. He has held directorships in a number of other companies, including new stadium Ltd which has been responsible for the development of the aviva stadium.

President of the Leinster branch in 1998-’99, he was first elected to the IRFu in 1996, since when he has made a major contribution to Irish rugby. He was Chairman of the strategic Review Committee which produced the first IRFu strategic Plan (2003 – ’07). as part of this process the union made changes to its laws to create a new Management Committee. Hussey became its first Chairman and served the maximum two three year terms (2003 – ’09) in that capacity. He also chaired a number of other committees including the IRFu academy and the IRFu Charitable Trust, of which he remains a Trustee.

He was also Chairman of the Magners League (now RaboDirect PRo 12) for a seven years period noted for the tournament’s consolidation and growth in stature and popularity in Ireland, scotland and Wales, and led the negotiations which brought recently the admission of two teams from Italy.

The 124th President of the IRFu is married to Patricia and has two sons, John Paul and David.

With the 2010/2011 ulster bank League complete, the attention quickly turns from the post mortem of the past campaign to the season ahead - a chance for all clubs to start on the same foot and challenge for new honours in the 2011/2012 ulster bank League in their division.

Rugby at the professional level will always receive the highest profile, but a growing and vibrant club league is crucial to the ongoing success of the sport. Local clubs and club players are the life-blood of the game and the ulster bank League in 2011/2012 will no doubt showcase some of the stars of the future senior international scene.

ulster bank strengthened its link with Irish Rugby last year, becoming the official Community Partner to the IRFu, a partnership which includes title sponsorship of the all-Ireland Club League along with the Irish Club International team until 2014.

our drive into the heart of rugby in Ireland, into the club and the community, was highlighted with the creation last year of a new club volunteer initiative, ulster bank RugbyForce, a programme designed to help unite club members and local volunteers to improve their club and community rugby facilities. an excellent response saw clubs from all over the country enter with four lucky clubs winning €5,000 worth of goods and resources. CIE personnel have been at the backbone of the club in the past, with ollie brown, sean gavin, Christy Dickenson, John McCarthy and most recently John McLoughlin all serving as Club President. In my own office, the wall is decorated with pictures of the 1993 all-Ireland winning team, not to mention a framed jersey.

In a by-gone era of rugby football on this island, it was the accepted tradition to wear club socks on international duty. This was an acknowledgement by the unions of the

important role that clubs played in the development of players, many of these coming from underage ranks right through to the highest possible level of this great oval ball game. sadly this popular and gracious practice was unceremoniously booted to touch

when an influential body of high -ranking referees argued that they had difficulty identifying the owners of illegal stray boots at ruck time. one top international ref described

the task of identification as “similar to looking into a bag of liquorice allsorts” so the great tradition came to an ignominious halt, the referees winning the argument that uniformity in the hosiery department by competing teams was the only way forward.

What a pity! How wonderful it would have been, particularly during World Cup 2011, if that practice had been restored. We would have thrilled at the sight of the light blue

of garryowen’s Conor Murray and Damian Varley, the black and blue of shannon’s Tony buckley, Donnacha Ryan and Jerry Flannery and, of course the famed black

and amber socks of Keith Earls and Paul O’Connell of Young Munster as they did themselves, their club, their city of Limerick and their country proud in new Zealand.

other local clubs may not agree, but Young Munster fans are globally acknowledged as exceptionally loyal. Team performances do not always make match viewing a totally

relaxing experience for home supporters at Tom Clifford Park, and the black and amber hordes have at times been subjected to a nervous strain unparalleled since

the days of the early martyrs, but their deep-rooted loyalty is never dented.

as a rugby reporter of many years, it is always a privilege and a joy to cover games at this club. The courtesy and co-operation the media receive at Young Munster RFC

is exceptional and for that we are particularly grateful. Long may it continue.

The new season is upon us and 116 years later how our club has developed and progressed through those years. We have endeavoured over the past 30 years to promote and coach youth rugby within the Club and many of our youth players have gone on to representative honours for their country and province notably Paul o’Connell and John Fitzgerald to name

but a few. We cater for nearly 275 Youths within our underage section from Mini Rugby u6s to u12s and Youth Rugby u13s to u19s – we are always looking for new players to come and

experience our wonderful club and tradition.

To all our players, coaches, committee, volunteers and parents I would sincerely like to thank you for your efforts and continued support for the coming season. We are always in need of

new coaches and committee members and any assistance will be gratefully welcomed.Looking forward to this season we have some excellent coaches in place to ensure that we

continue to be as competitive as possible on the field and hopefully capture some silverware.

Young Munster Women’s XV formed in 2007 and currently competes in Division 2 (South) of the All-Ireland League. With the girls entering their fifth year of rugby in 2011/2012, they are continuing to progress and build on their experience and it’s great to see a host of new faces turning up for training again this year. At their awards night for last season, back row Sarah Quin was presented with the award for Best Newcomer and also picked up the prize for Player’s Player of the Year. Sarah was selected for the Munster A development squad for the recent Representative Interprovincials and she scored the only try for Munster in their 13-0 win over Connacht – a huge achievement for Sarah after only her first season of rugby.Edel Hannon, who will captain Young Munster for the new season, picked up the award for Most Improved Player. Second row Edel was selected for the Connacht A development side against Munster joining fellow Young Munster player, half-back Ailish Toner. Edel made the Connacht senior side in the game v Leinster. Congratulations to all our girls who played in the interprovincials, we are very proud to see each Young Munster name on the team sheets.

Behind the scenes, Eddie Montgomery, head coach for the last number of years, has decided to step into the team manager role for the new season. Greg Costelloe has

taken up the role as head coach and will be assisted in the forwards by Derek McMahon. Trish Montgomery retains the role of Chairperson. Additional backroom personnel include Phil Hackett and Jackie McCarthy-O’Brien.
