One day, Peter asked Jesus

how often we should forgive

others. Jesus answered him

with a story. A poor man

owed a king some money.

The king was going to punish

the man for not paying him on time.

But the man begged the king to give him

more time to pay. The king showed mercy and

agreed. Then the king found out that the poor man was being mean to

someone who owed him some money. This made the king angry because

he had forgiven the poor man, but the poor man didn’t forgive someone

else. The king had the poor man thrown in jail. Jesus’ story shows that

God expects us to forgive others, just as He forgives us.

“So my heavenly Father will also do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother or sister from

your heart.” (Matthew 18:35, NRSV)

FORGIVE OTHERS

Forgiveness (for-give-ness)—to let go of some-thing that someone has done wrong to you. God has offered us forgiveness from our sins, even though we do not deserve it. Because He forgives us for our sins, we should always be willing to forgive others.

Today, you learned why

forgiveness is important to us and to God. When we offer forgiveness to others, we are showing them God’s love. Do you need

to forgive anyone? This week, pray and ask God to help you forgive that person. Then tell the person

that you forgive him or her. You will probably make that person happy. Your relationship with him or

her will be better too! If you don’t have anyone to forgive right now, prepare to have a forgiving heart others by spending time in prayer.

(Complete with help of parents or guardians.)

This week, your child learned the value of for-giveness through a story that Jesus told, called The Unforgiving Servant. In this story, a man is shown forgiveness, but he gets caught not giving forgiveness to another person and is punished for it. Your child was challenged to forgive someone. This week, spend some time cul-tivating an attitude of forgiveness. Help your child learn to forgive, and allow God to deal with the

perpetrator’s consequences. It is our job to forgive; it is God’s job to punish sin.
