LAWS OF SHAVUOS 2018 - 5778

1) There are five different terms used to describe the Shavuos festival: a) CHAG HAKATZIR, the harvest festival (Shemos 34:22), indicates that Shavuos coincides with the time of the wheat harvest. b) YOM HABIKURIM, day of the First Fruits (Bamidbar 28:26), denotes that at this time people brought the first fruit and two breads of the first wheat of their harvest to the Temple in Jerusalem. c) SHAVUOS, Festival of Weeks (Devarim 16:9-10), denotes the conclusion of the counting of the seven weeks of Sefiras HaOmer. d) ATZERES, appendage, denotes the thematic, historical and religious connection between Pesach and Shavuos, with Shavuos as an extension of Pesach. The name “Atzeres” is not found in the Torah. It was used by the Rabbis of the Talmud. e) ZEMAN MATTAN TORAHSAYNU, reminds us that the Torah was given at Mount Sinai at this time. 2) MEGILAS RUS is read on the second day of Shavuos. The story of Rus, like Shavuos, coin-cides with the harvest of wheat. Furthermore, the story of Rus is really the story of the ancestry of King David, who was born on and who died on Shavuos. Also, the marriage of Rus, the Moabite, to Boaz, the Jew, demonstrates the significant role the oral tradition plays in inter-preting the written tradition.

3) AKDAMOS is a poem composed by Rav Yitzchak, Shaliach Tzibbur of Worms, prior to 1096. It serves as an introduction to the reading of the Ten Commandments. Symbolically, it has ten voweled syllables per sentence, and numerous phrases are taken from the Aramaic translation of the Haftorah of each of the two days of Shavuos. Akdamos is read prior to the blessing made on the first aliyah to the Torah on the first day of Shavuos.

4) DAIRY FOOD DISHES are eaten to remember that after the Torah was received by Israel, the Jews ate dairy. They did this because, upon receiving the Torah, they realized that their pre-viously prepared meat food was not acceptable to be eaten by the standards of the Torah they had just received.

5) FOLIAGE AND FLOWERS remind us of the landscape of Mount Sinai at the time the To-rah was received.

6) CANDLE LIGHTING - The blessing of “shehecheyanu” is said following the blessing for the lighting of the candles on both nights of Shavuos. When Shavuos takes place on Friday night, candles must be lit before sunset and the blessing “l’hadlik ner shel Shabbos ve’shel Yom Tov” is said prior to “shehecheyanu”. When Shavuos takes place on Saturday night, before lighting candles for Yom Tov, women should say ‘Baruch hamavdil bein kodesh le’kodesh’.
