Thank you to all those who gave us Mishloach Manot – they were so thoughtful and creative and we really appre- ciate them. I would also like to thank Avi Robinson and his brother Yechiel for leyning the Megilla so beautifully. It really added to and enhanced my celebration of the holi- day and made it go so smoothly. They each did a master- ful job and it was a pleasure to listen to them. The com- munal Purim Seudah that we organized with Chabad and Agudas Achim was really wonderful this year-perhaps the best year yet. We tried holding it at a new location, HHNE, and it worked really nicely. Besides the fact that we had an amazing turnout from the broader community and had a wonderful time, it was also so nice to be able to work in tandem with the Gopins to plan the event. It was a great example of mutual respect and partnership where everyone was so devoted to meeting one goal: Ensuring that people had a fun but meaningful Purim Seudah. I would love to get some feedback from those of you who were there about what you liked and disliked and also from those of you who did not attend so that I can get a sense of why that was the case. My hunch is that many people just like to have their own Purim Seudah at home with friends and family which is totally understandable. However, if there is another reason you held back from coming I would love to know so that we can help to fix it in future years. One piece of feedback that I got was that the Seudah was held too late in the day for people with small children. We actually wanted to hold it much earlier but were told that the JCC was having a Purim event earlier in the afternoon and we did not want to conflict. In the end the JCC did not hold their program but by then all of our materials had been sent out. And now on to the next celebration…OUR SHUL DINNER! The committee has been working SO hard and it is really admirable. I am usually intimately involved with every detail of planning every shul event - especially one as big as this. In this instance, since I am one of the honorees, the committee wanted me to step back and be less involved so that I could be surprised at the dinner and feel the excitement build as we got closer. I have to admit that it was very hard for me to step back…! Nevertheless, the committee achieved their goal since I am waiting with much anticipation and excitement to see what it will be like. Rabbi’s Corner I hope that everyone enjoyed their Purim holiday.

Thank you to all those who gave us Mishloach Manot –

they were so thoughtful and creative and we really appre-

ciate them. I would also like to thank Avi Robinson and

his brother Yechiel for leyning the Megilla so beautifully.

It really added to and enhanced my celebration of the holi-

day and made it go so smoothly. They each did a master-

ful job and it was a pleasure to listen to them. The com-

munal Purim Seudah that we organized with Chabad and

Agudas Achim was really wonderful this year-perhaps the

best year yet. We tried holding it at a new location,

HHNE, and it worked really nicely. Besides the fact that

we had an amazing turnout from the broader community

and had a wonderful time, it was also so nice to be able to

work in tandem with the Gopins to plan the event. It was

a great example of mutual respect and partnership where

everyone was so devoted to meeting one goal: Ensuring

that people had a fun but meaningful Purim Seudah. I

would love to get some feedback from those of you who

were there about what you liked and disliked and also

from those of you who did not attend so that I can get a

sense of why that was the case. My hunch is that many

people just like to have their own Purim Seudah at home

with friends and family which is totally understandable.

However, if there is another reason you held back from

coming I would love to know so that we can help to fix it in

future years. One piece of feedback that I got was that the

Seudah was held too late in the day for people with small

children. We actually wanted to hold it much earlier but

were told that the JCC was having a Purim event earlier in

the afternoon and we did not want to conflict. In the end

the JCC did not hold their program but by then all of our

materials had been sent out.

And now on to the next celebration…OUR SHUL

DINNER! The committee has been working SO hard and

it is really admirable. I am usually intimately involved

with every detail of planning every shul event - especially

one as big as this. In this instance, since I am one of the

honorees, the committee wanted me to step back and be

less involved so that I could be surprised at the dinner and

feel the excitement build as we got closer. I have to admit

that it was very hard for me to step back…! Nevertheless,

the committee achieved their goal since I am waiting with

much anticipation and excitement to see what it will be

like. I hear there are some great things in store. I am look-

ing forward to celebrating with all of you and having a

good time. Elana and I feel privileged to be given this hon-

or – Thanks! Shabbat Shalom! Rabbi Weinberg

Rabbi Daniel Loew will be delivering the drasha on Shabbat morning in honor of the upcoming

dinner and honorees - he will speak about leadership and volunteerism.

MAOT CHITTIM

There is an ancient custom to give charity before Pesach to see that all Jews have their holiday needs

taken care of. As opposed to Matanot Le’evyonim, which can easily be taken care of on the day of Pu-rim, Maot Chittin are needed well in advance of Pe-

sach to allow for proper distribution of funds.

The money will be distributed to the following worthy causes : Jewish Family Service Food Pantry,

The JFS Kosher Food Pantry provides kosher food

items, as well as toiletries and cleaning supplies to peo-

ple right here in West Hartford experiencing financial

difficulties; & Yad Eliezer, provides chicken and su-permarket vouchers to thousands of people in

Israel for Pesach with almost no overhead costs. Every year a special effort is made to raise money for

the Maot Chitim program, literally meaning “wheat money.” This program is based on the ancient custom of providing funds to help needy Jews purchase Passo-

ver food. You may donate through www.yadeliezer.org

and www.jfshartford.org or Give a check to Rabbi Weinberg made out to

Parshat Ki Tisa - Rabbi David Silverberg (www.vbm-torah.org)

The Torah in Parashat Ki-Tisa presents the instructions for producing theketoret, the incense that was burned twice each day inside the Mishkan. Theketoret was a blend of several different spices, includ-ing chelbena (galbanum), which, as Chazal famously noted, generally emitted a foul odor. It was only when it merged with the other spices of the ketoret that the chelbenacontributed a pleasing scent to the aroma of the ketoret. The Gemara in Masekhet Keritut (6b) comments that the inclusion of the chelbena in the ketoret serves as a model for the inclusion of sinners in public religious events: “Any fast day that does not include the sinners of Israel is not a fast day.” When a community observes a public fast day in response to a threat or calamity, it must include the “sinners of Israel.” As we come before the Almighty as a collective group, all members of Am Yisra-el must be represented. Even the posh’ei Yisrael, the nation’s sinners, have a vital role to play in our appeals to God, and they must therefore be included in a community’s observance of a day of prayer and repentance. The Ba’al Shem Tov is cited as sharpening the message of the Gemara’s comment by suggesting a bold and novel reading of this remark. One might wonder, how are we to include the posh’ei Yisrael in a day of fast-ing? Why would a sinner want to join in this kind of religious observance? The Ba’al Shem Tov suggested that this is precisely the Gemara’s message. If the righteous members of the community fail to persuade the sinners to join in the public fast day, if the posh’ei Yisrael have been disenchanted to the point where they separate from the community even in times of communal crisis, this serves as a harsh indictment against the righteous commu-nity members. It is their responsibility to draw the posh’ei Yisrael back, and if this does not happen, then the fast day is inherently deficient, because even the righteous members are not so righteous. If they were truly pious, then they would have succeeded in drawing the posh’ei Yisrael to participate in communal religious functions. This reading of the Gemara’s comment may be somewhere exaggerated (and it is likely that the Ba’al Shem Tov intended it as an exaggeration), as it is difficult to accept the premise that every instance of alienation from the religious community is the fault of that community. Still, the Ba’al Shem Tov’s insight alerts us to the fact that insincerity can often serve as a powerful repellant. When the “sinners of Israel” detect a lack of genuineness in our religious devotion, they are less likely to join our ranks. The chelbenacan emit a pleasing aroma only if it mixes with spices that are truly pleasing. The more sincere and genuine our Torah observance, the more likely we are to inspire others, and transform Am Yisrael into the magnificent “ketoret” that we are meant to be, that will emit the pleasing “aroma” of Godliness and spirituality throughout the world.
