On behalf of Lubbock Meals on Wheels’ staff and recipients, thank you very much to all of you who helped make the holidays special for our clients.

Lubbock Meals on Wheels’ staff and supporters are saddened by the loss of a very special lady. Madge Malone Webster passed away shortly after the holidays. Madge was one of the founders of LMOW in 1971. She has been a volunteer and donor ever since. Borrowed from her program “demonstrating how to live a life of service and dedication to the highest standards of conduct, and a job done with pride in every detail. Her race now run, her tiny body but a husk, exhausted by a life lived to the fullest, used up to the last day. Well done, thou good and faithful servant.” Our thoughts and deepest sympathy go Madge’s family and friends during this difficult time.

Lubbock Meals on Wheels has, once again, provided the 12 Days of Christmas Project to our recipients. Thanks to the hard work of various schools, businesses, organizations, and individuals, the clients of Lubbock Meals on Wheels received a different special treat on each of the twelve working days prior to the Christmas holiday. Items included puzzles, calendars, note cards, edible goodies, as well as personal and household necessities. Pets were not forgotten as each animal on the Pet Program received a Christmas treat bag. Many of our recipients have extended their gratitude via cards and phone calls. Thank you to all the volunteers who made these extra special deliveries, and thank you to the following groups for giving our recipients a treat to look forward to everyday:

Lubbock Meals on Wheels has received a very generous grant from the J.T. and Margaret Talkington Charitable Foundation that has allowed us to purchase the property directly

to our west. These funds will also help us begin a much needed expansion of our facilities,

which will allow us to serve more of the homebound people in Lubbock.

HERE WE GROW AGAIN! Welcome to 2015 which is going to be a very exciting and challenging year at Lubbock Meals on Wheels. As you have already read in this newsletter, we are now the proud owners of the property to the west of our current building. Thanks to a very generous grant from the J.T. & Margaret Talkington Charitable Foundation we were able to purchase the land and begin an expansion that will ultimately allow us to feed more people in our community. We have had to put potential new clients on a waiting list due to our lack of space to prepare more meals, store coolers, and accommodate more volunteers. Although there is still much to plan, and many details to work through, our hope is to be able to expand our volunteer center, kitchen, offices, parking areas, and meeting room. There have not been any significant changes to our facility since the kitchen was added and office areas renovated in the late 1990s. So as you can imagine our Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers are extremely excited about this much needed expansion and the many possibilities it brings. We are grateful for this grant and the opportunity to provide the best possible service to our current clients and meet the needs of the growing number of homebound in our community. We will do our best to provide updates on our progress through the local media, our website, and social media so please stay tuned and watch us grow!

a note from the executive director

Thanks to our long-time friends and supporters from Lubbock Lion’s Club for $2,437.50 to provide emergency meals, once again, in 2015. A special thank you goes to Caprock Corvette Club for their gift of $2,500. Thank you to Community Christian Church for their hard work and incredibly generous donation of $9,500 from the Holiday Extravaganza they held in November. We truly appreciate our friends at McPherson Cellars who shared $13,109.90, proceeds from their 3rd Annual Wines & Vines Festival. Thanks also to the South Plains Food Bank for the senior food boxes sent to over 500 of our clients. Our gratitude also goes to Home Instead Senior Care and all the individuals who supported the Santa to a Senior project that benefited 350 of our clients. A big thank you goes to Acosta Sales & Marketing for $1,064 collected from staff throughout the year on casual Friday. Downtown Ambucs surprised us with $1,000. Thank you also to the Texas Tech Red & Black Gives Back for donating basketball tickets to our volunteers in December. We were also honored and grateful to be chosen as recipients of the Goodfellows funds through the Lubbock Avalanche Journal. Also, thanks to 10th grader Carolyn Benitez who held her 5th Annual month long pet food drive to collect food for our Pet Food Program. The Friends of the Wolfforth Library gifted

us with many books to be distributed to our recipients. The Pirates of the Plains Parrot Head Club donated shelf stable items to help stock our Weekend Meal Sacks. And for the first year, Chris Evans, offered a place to donate shelf stable items at his dynamic Christmas light show throughout the month of December. Thank you also to all those who were kind enough to donate to our Fall and Holiday Meal mail campaigns. We also owe a huge thank you to all of the volunteers who not only delivered the hot meals but all of the extra items for the 12 Days of Christmas, the senior food boxes, and other various donations of gifts and food. These are excellent examples of what an incredible impact people can make in the lives of others. If you would like to make a difference this year, please keep Lubbock Meals on Wheels in mind.

Remember you can make online donations at lubbockmealsonwheels.org

Over the past 4 years, the Holiday Extravaganza sponsored by Community Christian Church has raised over $30,000 for Lubbock Meals on Wheels. This event has grown so much that

the organizers are looking for a few extra hands. They meet almost every week to gather gift

type items and make baskets out of them. They also make wreaths, bows, ornaments, and a

whole lot more. They say that you do not need to be artistic to join in the fun. They would

certainly appreciate your help. Please call Rena 806-549-2538 or Community Christian Church 806-792-0500. They are also accepting donations of the following items.

Many of our meal recipients do not see anyone during the day except our volunteer so they rely on their pets for companionship. Most of our recipients obviously have difficulty buying groceries

and preparing meals; they have the same challenges feeding their pets. The Pet Food program continues to meet this need and supplies dog and cat food to these compan-ion animals. Thank you to all of you who have helped continue this special program. Donations of dry dog and dry cat food are always needed and welcomed.

Surveyed Attitudes of the Elderly Regarding the Benefits of Pets:* Talk to their pet 95%* Pet helps when they feel sad 82%* Pet helps when they physically feel bad 71%* Touching their pet makes them feel better 65%* Confides in their pet 57%...Conclusion: “Pets are an integral compo-nent of the social support network for many individuals and therefore probably contrib-ute to public health and well-being.”

The twenty-third annual “Feed a Friend – It’s as Easy as Pie” fundraiser was held the week before Thanksgiving, raising an amazing $67,933.75! A special thank you to our “pie angel”, Genia Davis, for generously donating to this event. Thank you very much to The United Family, KLBK, KAMC, and Sara Lee for their help in making this fundraiser possible. Congratulations to Nikki-Dee Ray of KLBK who won the pie eating contest that kicked off the Easy as Pie event. Thanks to the other contest participants: Mudflap of KLLL, Lauren Matter and Ron Roberts of KAMC, Shelby Crews of The United Family, entertainer Kenny Maines, and Terri Furman & David Collier of KLBK. And a shout out to former champion Rick Gilbert for trying to keep an eye on everyone while judging the event. Congratulations to the staff and managers at the 82nd & Boston United for having the largest increase in donations for the event. Finally, thanks to all the radio stations that promoted the fundraiser and to the massive number of

volunteers, store checkers, and donors who so generously supported the event. This was one of the most successful Easy as Pie events ever, and we thank you for making it happen.

The Lubbock Avalanche Journal now provides 250 newspapers per day (Monday – Friday) to be distributed free of charge to clients in Lubbock and Idalou. AJ Readers are generously sponsoring this special project. Lubbock Meals on Wheels is very excited about continuing this partner-ship and looks forward to providing yet another “extra” to our meal recipients. Newspaper Tips: BBQ Cleaner-Soak news-paper in water, lay the sheets over a warm barbecue grill, close the lid and leave for approximately an hour. Then, simply remove the paper and wipe the grill clean. Shelf Liners-Use old papers to line your cabinet, dresser, pantry or bathroom shelves. It's cheaper than shop-bought shelf liners, and they’re easy to put in and replace.
