“The education I received, the experiences I had, and the friends Imade are still an important part of my life almost 50 years after graduating from McAuley.

My daughters and daughter-in-law also are McAuley alums, and next year my granddaughter

will continue the tradition. I want to be sure a McAuley education is available for every girl

who wants it.” —Mary Ann Ballard Gleason ‘68

Dear Alumnae, Parents, Grandparents, and Friends of McAuley,

As I reflect on McAuley High School’s amazing 2014-15 school year, I cannot help but be

filled with the utmost pride, gratitude and praise for the wonderful gifts that were bestowed on

the McAuley Family. It was a year of new beginnings, as we proudly welcomed Dan Minelli as our

Principal. It was a year of impressive achievements for our students - in the classroom, on the

field, and on the stage. And, it was a year of profound mission-focus as our young women,

empowered by their ever-growing faith in God, extended themselves into the community to serve

others in lasting, impactful ways.

All of these gifts were made possible thanks to you, our generous benefactors, who partner

with us to help develop faith-filled, confident women leaders. Your relentless passion for

McAuley, and ongoing spirit of giving, enable us to provide our young women with an exceptional

education rooted in our Core Mercy Values of Faith, Compassion, Service, Leadership and

Excellence.

Our Foundress, Catherine McAuley, said “Resolve to do good today, and better tomorrow.” It is

with this in mind that McAuley moves forward. We are evolving, inspiring. We are modeling for

our students what it is to be life-long learners, and we are committed to our Vision - to be

Greater Cincinnati’s preferred academic choice for individual excellence that forms faith-filled

women leaders.

Your continued commitment to McAuley energizes us in the coming year as we begin to

implement an innovative strategic plan for the Mercy Education Collaborative of Cincinnati

(MECC). This plan, conceptualized during the 2014-2015 school year, will strengthen our MECC

partnership even further and take the “good today,” the excellence of McAuley High School, to

even greater heights. With your support, and with God’s good grace, McAuley will be unstoppable.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for your generous gifts to the young women of

McAuley and for your active part in our community. You motivate all of us to continually strive for

greatness. I feel extremely blessed and privileged to be part of this amazing McAuley Family –

thank you.

Blessings,

Kirsten MacDougal

MECC President

2014-15 was an exceptional year for McAuley –thanks to our many generous donors who helpmake it possible for us to carry our mission forward.

New Leadership

In 2014, we welcomed Dan Minelli as the new Principal of

McAuley. Dan brings 35 years of experience in education, and

most recently served as the Assistant Principal of Freshmen and

Sophomores at St. Xavier High School for 12 years. He has also

served as the Principal for Our Mother of Sorrows School.

New Mission Statement, Core Values & Tagline

The school’s mission statement and core values were modified

to reflect the rich history and tradition of the Sisters of Mercy

and our foundress, Catherine McAuley, and are shared by our

MECC sister school, Mother of Mercy. The core values were

graphically applied to the “columns” within our ground floor

lobby that literally and figuratively serve as the foundation of our

school. The new tagline, Be Empowered, was also introduced.

New Format for Open House

In October, we welcomed hundreds of families and potential new

students to our Open House, which showcased McAuley High

School in new, engaging ways. Guests heard the musical and

vocal talents of our musicians and Vocal Ensemble students as

they toured the building; our dance team provided high energy

entertainment; science students conducted experiments; art stu-

dents created ceramic pieces right before their eyes; drama stu-

dents performed short skits; creative cooking students baked

fresh homemade cookies, creative writing students showcased

their work. The entire school was truly alive!

• All students, faculty and staff from both McAuley and Mother

of Mercy read Left to Tell: Discovering God Amdist the

Rwandan Holocaust, by Immaculée Ilibagiza. The book

describes how Immaculée survived during the 1994 Rwandan

genocide, when she and seven other women huddled silently

together in a cramped bathroom for 91 days. Teachers incor-

porated elements of the book into a wide range of courses,

and students even had the opportunity to hear Immaculée

speak in person.

• McAuley’s unique “Women In” Program continued to expand.

In 2014-15, 119 students were part of the program, repre-

senting a 13 percent increase from the previous year. Women

In Technology was added as one of the program’s focus areas.

(Other focus areas include Medicine, Law and Engineering.)

Tiffany Manning transferred to McAuley as a freshman during the middle of the 2014-15 schoolyear. According to her mother, Beverly, Tiffany had been struggling at her previous school. “I knewthat she needed a place where education and faith went together, a place thatwould encourage and build her up,” said Beverly. “The change in Tiffany just within the veryfirst week of attending McAuley was absolutely stunning; I began to see her sparkle return. Today, I see not only that wonderful sparkle back in her eyes and in her step, but I see her promise and heroptimism in planning out her future. Tiffany now has been given the best gifts of all, the gifts of committed support, empowerment, education, faith, and love...all of which are going to make herdreams a reality. The McAuley community stepped up for my daughter when she and I both needed it the most. For this we will be eternally grateful.”

“McAuley has given me the opportunity for a better and more advanced education,” says Tiffany. “It has also made me realize that there are genuinely good people in this world who are willing to sacrifice so much in order to provide me with such a wonderful opportunity to grow and to become astrong leader. My education and experiences at McAuley have allowed me to grow in a short amount of time both in my leadership skills and in faith. I am proud to say I am a part of such a great placeand know that my time at McAuley will only bring me bigger and brighter things for my future. I amvery thankful.”

SPOTL I GHTFor Mirey Taite, McAuley isn’t just the school she attends from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. It’s a home away from

home. It’s a community that supports one another. It’s a family of people who help her become the best versionof herself.

“McAuley has empowered me to become a leader,” says Mirey. “One of my favorite teachers, Mrs. Link, hasbeen a great role model for me and has helped shape my leadership skills. Being a leader is more than just beingable to make decisions for a group of people or taking charge in certain situations. It is also about how yourepresent yourself and how you treat others.”

Mirey puts her leadership skills to good use through the many activities she embraces with enthusiasm andpassion. She’s actively involved in Student Council, Drama, Student Ambassadors Club, Vocal Ensemble, and is amember of National Honor Society, Thespians Honor Society and Work Study Program. She’s also involved in a new“Fearless Initiative” which helps students cope with stresses in healthy ways.

Mirey believes McAuley is a special place, and says she is grateful for the many donors who help make aMcAuley education possible for her and other students. “The people here at McAuley are what make the school sospecial. Everyone here, students, teachers, and staff, has such a positive attitude, and is always willing help others. It makes me so happy that I can be a part of this welcoming community,” says Mirey.18

Jill Hungler Schlotman ’01 often said that some of the best years of her life were heryears as a McAuley student. That’s why her family wasn’t surprised at her 2001 graduationwhen Jill was announced as one of the very few who achieved perfect attendance for all four years! She met her lifelong group of friends at McAuley and LaSalle, where she marched with the band allof her high school years.

After McAuley, Jill earned a BA in English at Miami University in Oxford and discovered her truepassion. Always the advocate for those less fortunate, Jill landed a job working for LivingArrangements for the Developmentally Disabled (LADD) and began working toward her lifetime

career goal to be a special education teacher. It was also during her undergrad years that she met her future husband, JT. After she earned her Master of Education degree from the University of Cincinnati and completed an internship atPurcell-Marian, Jill achieved her goal and became a special education teacher with the Norwood Schools.

In October 2007, just two months before her wedding, Jill was diagnosed with a rare form of sarcoma. For her family, it was hard to understand how a healthy young woman who had just completed the Flying Pig marathon could be thatsick. After emergency surgery and chemo treatments, JT and Jill kept their promise to each other and were married inDecember. They made a home with their beloved pets, Lucy the rabbit, and Carson, their Golden Retriever, as Jill continued to fight the good fight.

Jill passed away on September 17, 2008, just 11 short months after the diagnosis of the disease that took a beloveddaughter, sister, wife, friend, and one of the most compassionate people one could ever know. Jill’s spirit remains alivetoday among her family and close friends.

To carry on her spirit of compassion, the Schlotman and Hungler families initiated the “Jill Hungler Schlotman MemorialWalk for Cancer Awareness” in association with McAuley to fund an endowed scholarship in Jill’s name for McAuley students needing tuition assistance. Held annually in September, the walk begins at McAuley and goes through CollegeHill. Hundreds of people have participated in the walk since it started six years ago, and it has raised $32,130 forMcAuley students. Knowing Jill’s love of McAuley and her giving spirit, the families believe Jill wouldn’t have it any other way.
