S top, I need y our h elp!
It was in Detr oit, Michigan , several years ago.

Yes , I rep lied .
Please, w hen you get th rough tonight, w ill you com e hom e w ith m e. I

som e of the men stopped m e.
What does the m an want?
He wants me to go home with him after the meeting tonight.
Dont do i t . Hes k now n t o be da ng erou s .
Im sor ry, bu t I pr om ised a nd I sha ll go with h im.
When the service was over that evening, I went with the man three blocks
down the str eet and then into an alley, and stopped. The m an unlocked the
door an d s aid, Com e in. Walking into the r oom , I foun d th e m an locking thedoor b ehind m e, and th en reach ing into his pocket he pulled out a r evolver an d

I dont in ten d to do y ou an y ha rm , he s a id . I jus t w an t to as k y ou

Wh at d id I sa y? I have forgotten .
You s aid, The b lood of J esu s Chr ist cleans es u s from all sin.
Yes , Go d says so.
Then he s aid to m e, You s ee this r evolver? It has killed four peop le. It is
m ine. Two of them were killed b y m e, two of them by my bar tender in a br awl
in my saloon. Is ther e hope for a m an like me?
Yes. Th e blood of J esu s Chr ist clean seth us from all sin. Chr ist can
forgive you a nd help you ob ey the Com m and m ents of God.
Then the m an said, Brother Finn ey, anoth er q uestion. In the back of this

br ought their b abies her e and pled with m e not to sell any mor e booze to their
hu sba nd s, bu t I have driven them out an d k ept on with the whiskey selling. Is
there hope for a m an like m e?
God s ays, The blood of J esus Christ His Son , cleans eth u s from all sin.
[1 J ohn 1:7].
Anoth er q ues tion, Broth er Finn ey, In b ack of this oth er p ar tition is a
gam bling joint an d it is as crooked as s in and Satan . There isnt a decent wheel
in the whole place. It is all loaded and crooked . A m an leaves the s aloon with
som e mon ey left in h is pocket, and we tak e his m oney away from him in our
gambling hall. Men have gone out of that gambling den to commit suicide when
their m oney, and per hap s entr us ted fun ds , were all gone. Is ther e any hope for
a m an like m e?
God s ays, The b lood of J esus Christ, His Son , cleans eth u s from all sin.
One m or e qu estion, an d I will let you go. When you walk ou t of this a lley
you tu rn to the r ight a nd youll see a b rown-stone h ouse. It is m y hom e. I ownit. My wife is ther e, an d m y eleven-year old child, Mar gar et. Thir teen years ago
I went to New Yor k on bu sines s. I m et a b eau tiful gir l. I lied to her. I told h er I
was a stockbrok er, and she m arr ied m e. I brought her here, and when she
found out m y bu siness it br oke her hear t. I have mad e life a hell on ear th for
her. I have come hom e dr unk , beaten her, locked her out, and m ade h er l ife
m ore m iserable than that of any bru te beast . About a m onth ago I went h ome
one n ight d ru nk , m ean, m iserable. My wife got in the way som e how, an d I
star ted beating her. My dau ghter thr ew herself between u s. I slapped that girl
across the face and knocked h er against a r ed-hot stove. Her ar m is bu rn ed
from shoulder to wrist. It will never look like anything decent. Brother Finney,
is there hope for a m an like m e?
I took h old of the m ans s hou lders, s hook him , and said, Oh, son, wha t ablack s tory you h ave to tell! But God says, The b lood of J esus Christ, His Son ,
cleans eth us from all sin!
The m an s aw it. He looked a t m e a long mom ent an d th en said, Than k
you, Br other Finney. Tha nk you very mu ch. Now I kn ow. Pra y for m e. I am
coming to chur ch tom orr ow night. And I am going to do s om e chan ging.
I left that ba ck r oom a nd went hom e. The next m orn ing, about s even
oclock, the s aloon m an finally got finished with h is bu sines s a t his office and
leaving it hea ded acros s th e str eet to his h om e. His n ecktie was awry. His face
was du sty, sweaty, and tears tained. He was s hak ing as th ough he were d ru nk .
But lets go back to that room . That night h e had taken the swivel chair in
the office and smashed the mirror, the fireplace, the desk and the other chairs.
He had sm ashed the par tit ion on each side. Every bott le and bar rel and ba r
m irror in that saloon was shattered and b roken u p. The sawdust was swim-
m ing ankle deep in a terr ible m ixtur e of beer, gin, whiskey, an d wine. Th e
stench th at ros e from that r otten mes s was terr ific. In the gamb ling estab lish -

m ent on the other s ide the tables were smas hed. The dice and car ds s m oldered
in the fireplace.
And then h e had cried for h our s ther e alone on his kn ees with God.
And so with it all over, he s taggered acros s th e str eet as th e su n a ros e,
walked up the stairs of his hom e, and sat d own heavily in the chair of his
room. His wife called the little girl, Maggie, run upstairs and tell daddy break-fas t is rea dy. The girl walked slowly up the s tairs . Half afraid , sh e stood in the
door and said, Dadd y, Mam m a said b reak fast was r eady; to come down.
Maggie, darling, daddy doesnt want any breakfast. That little girl didnt
walk; she just flew down those stairs. Mamma, daddy said, Maggie, darling,
an d he d idnt. Maggie, you d idnt un der sta nd . You go ba ck u ps tairs an d tell
da dd y to come d own. Maggie went b ack up stairs with th e m other following
her. The m an looked up as h e heard the childs step, spr ead his kn ees and
sa id, Maggie, com e h ere.
Sh yly, fr ighten ed, in a tr em ble, the little girl walked slowly up to h im. He
began cr ying as h e lifted her up , placed her on his kn ee, press ed h is face
against her chest an d wept. The wife, stan ding in the d oor, didnt kn ow whathad hap pened . After a while he n oticed her stan ding there an d said, Wife, come
here.
He sat her on his other knee, threw his large arm s ar ound those two whom
he loved, whom he ha d s o fearfully abu sed, lowered his face between th em , and
sobb ed un til the room almos t shook with the im pact of his feelings.
After s om e m inutes h e began to contr ol hims elf, looked u p into the faces of
his wife and girl, and s aid to them :
Wife an d d au ghter,you n eednt ever be a fr aid of m e an y m or e. God ha s
br ought you a n ew man , a new dad dy hom e today.
That s am e night th at m an, h is wife, and child, walked d own the aisle of the
chur ch, gave their hearts to Christ and joined the chur ch. He spent the r emain-der of his life trying to help other people. Many were the young people that he
warn ed to flee from liquor and cigar ettes and gam blingfor he well knew the
terr ible hole that they would br ing a m an into. Cha rles G. Finn ey .

I was at the top of my career. It ha pp ened in 194 0. Tha t was th e year I won

began to hap pen.
I sp ent the winter in tap room s. When s pr ing tra ining rolled ar oun d I was

I tried to d rink with extrem e m oder ation, because I kn ew that alcohol is
the worst poison a m an can take into his system ,but I foun d out tha t it was
an imp ossibility to drink m odera tely.
The fact that I indulged at all, compelled me to drink on every occasion it

For th at r eason, b ecause m oder ate dr inking is an abs olute im poss ibility, I

En ter ing the office of a well-k no wn b u sin ess m an in New Yor k City, I foun d

explained: I wro te tha t m yself. Som etime b ack I foun d m yself falling into th e

dom inated m e. I saw tears in m y wifes eyes an d wond er on the faces of m y
childr en. One day I sat d own and wrote that card and then looked at it. And
the m ore I looked a t it, the awful mes sage that it contained bu rs t on m e. So I
nailed it ther e and read it several times each da y. I went hom e sober that n ight,
and have not touched a dr op ever since.
It was all a matter of what was most important in my life. Once I had

One of the finest th ings th at could h ave hap pened to the br ewing ind us try

Ten to twenty-five teaspoons of pure alcohol will cause obvious drunken-
ness. A bottle of 4% beer (360 c.c.) contains 4 teaspoons of alcohol. Fouroun ces (120 c.c.) of wine (14% alcohol) contains 4 teaspoon s of alcohol. Three
ounces of fortified wine (21% alcohol) contains 5 teaspoons of alcohol. Eight
teaspoon s (32 c.c.) of whisky contains 4 teas poons of alcohol.
Statistics ind icate that on e per son in every seven tha t begins d rink ing end s
up as a confirm ed alcoholic. The only ans wer that m edical science kn ows for
avoiding the addictive properties of alcohol is total abstinence.
Here is a m edica l de f in i t ion o f a lcohol:
Alcohol, from a m edical point of view, is an intoxicating, hypnotic, an es-
thetic, nar cotic, depr essan t, dam aging, poisonous , and hab it-form ing dr ug.
1. Alcohol is intoxicating, because dr unk enness is created by its use.
2. Alcohol is hypnotic, becaus e it tends to pu t peop le to sleep.
3. Alcohol is an esthetic, becaus e in higher dos es it ind uces a deep s leep out
of which a p erson can ha rd ly be wakened .
4. Alcohol is a nar cotic, becaus e in large doses it stup efies.
5. Alcohol is a d epr essan t, because it depr esses (that is, slows d own) the
central nervous s ystem and a n um ber of body functions.
6. Alcohol is damaging, because it gradually destroys brain cells.
7. Alcohol is a poison, b ecause in large doses it will kill a h um an being, an
animal, or a plant that h as b een exposed to i t .
8. Alcohol is habit-forming because with continued use a fixed desire will be
created to r epeatedly dr ink it.

and safety: When you take 1 sh ots of whiskey, or 1 bottles of beer, or 1
glasses of wine, your reaction time is s lowed 6 %. When you tak e 3 sh ots of
whisky, or 3 bottIes of beer, or 3 glasses of wine, your reaction time is

this pr oblem is comp ound ed by the fact that loaded dr ivers a re m ore confi-

At the pr esent time over h alf the ad ult popu lation of our nation d rink
alcoholic beverages. Some eight to nine million of these are known alcoholics.
But there ar e also those who ar e secret alcoholics. A su rp rising nu m ber of
wom en fall into this category. Not long ago, Har vey Fisk e of the National Coun -

are p robab ly as m any women alcoholics as m en, and they m ay be doing moreda m age and be even far ther a way from help than m en. This is because so

We cannot solve a problem we deny that we have. No one ever stopped

In 19 70, the Rutgers Center for Alcohol Stud ies m ad e what was pr obab ly

Am ericans were picked a t ra nd om and interviewed by a George Wash ington
University resear ch team . Fun ded b y a federa l gra nt of $40 0,00 0, the stu dy
findings were later placed in a book, Am erican Drink ing Practices. This is
what th ey discovered:
Drinker s comp ose 68% of the population, and abstainers (non-drinkers)
compr ise 32%.
The h eavy dr inkers (12%) us ually dr ink n early every day, but som e dr ink
less freq uently, tak ing five or m ore d rink s each time th ey do.
The mod erate drinkers (13%) dr ink from once to several t im es a m onth,
taking an average of thr ee to four dr inks each time.
The l ight d rinkers (28%) dr ink at least once a m onth, and at each t ime take

31% heavy dr inkers . The Rutgers s tud y also revealed that thos e who attend
chur ch r egularly ar e 50% less likely to be heavy dr inkers than those who h ave
no ch ur ch affiliation. Yet there was dr inking am ong chur ch m em bers : At the
top of the list were J ews, Episcopalian s, an d Rom an Cath olics, in that ord er.
The h ighest p ercentage of dr inker s live in the Northeas t (79%), an d the
second highest on th e Pacific Coast (73%). The lowest was foun d in the S outh-
ern S tates, and the avera ge (abou t 35%) was in the South Centr al States.
The heaviest drinkers (1) come from families where the parents drank also,
(2) their origin is in ethnic grou ps , such as th e Irish , where d rink ing is quite
common, (3) their religion (Roman Catholic, for example) places little or no
restraint on drinking, and (4) they live in large cities where heavy drinking is
prevalent.

Alcohol first increases s toma ch acid secretions, and then slows them d own.
It irr itates the s toma ch lining, r esulting in congestion, inflamm ation, an d
ulceration. A chr onically-inflamed stom ach is the resu lt of regularly dr inking
liquor.
Alcohol also develops in alcoholics a disease known as cirrhosis of the liver.
Many sm all ar eas within it are gra du ally destr oyed an d r eplaced by scar tissue. As th e destr uction of liver cells con tinues, the liver tr ies to m ak e new ones, b ut
scar tissue keeps bu ilding up where the dead cells once were. These scar
nodules give the liver an appearance of being hob-nailed.
The dam age and scarr ing reduces pr oper b lood circulation thr ough th is,
the largest organ in your body. Impaired circulation to the liver strongly affects
the stom ach, intestines, and s pleen, and th ose organs also su ffer.
The back pr essu re, caus ed by blood b eing held b ack from entering the liver,
begins to caus e blood plasm a to flow out from the per itoneal veins into the
abd om inal cavity behind the liver. There it accum ulates, som etim es in su ch
large qu antities th at it mu st be d ra wn off rep eatedly in ord er to r elieve the
alcoholic of severe d istention an d discom fort.
We call this n ightm ar e cirr hos is of the liver. It is pr ogress ive, and gener ally
end s in d eath . Yet it could b e entirely avoided . Drink ing liqu or was the ind irect
cause of the problem. Stopping the alcohol was the only real way to solve it.
Drinking alcohol produces warm, flushed skin. The drinker feels warmer
becaus e m ore b lood is flowing throu gh th e skin vessels. But the blood is being

dr awn from inside the b ody, which b ecomes grad ually cooler. Body tem per a-
tur e keeps falling. Som e people think that d rink ing liqu or will warm them up
in cold weather. But th is is not really tru e.
Alcohol lowers resistance to disease (especially pneumonia). Medical re-
por ts h ave dealt with this fact in detail. Here is an examp le of this: The Cook
County Hospital, in Chicago, sum m arized the death rates am ong 3,422 pn eu-
m onia cases, as follows:
49.87% of them were excessive dr inkers; 34 .40% were m oderate dr inker s;
22.45% were occasional drinkers.
Drink ing alcohol s hor tens the life sp an dr as tically. For ty-three U.S. life
insuran ce com panies had death r ecords of 2,000,000 policyholders who died
between 1885 and 1905 , They were su m m arized as follows:
People drink ing 2 glass es of beer or 1 of whisk y per da y were 18% mor e
likely to die than the average American.
Those with a past record of heavy drinking, but with present apparent cure
were 50 % higher.
Thos e us ing over 2 glass es of beer or 1 of whisk y da ily were 86 % higher.Alcohol, when it enter s th e blood str eam and is carr ied to the liver, begins
being converted into carbon dioxide and water. This oxidation is quite slow,
am oun ting to abou t 2 teas poons of alcohol an hou r. (If it were food, it would be
equa l to the bod y using up two cubes of sugar each hou rand that is slow!)
Alcohol is n ot a food, and cann ot be stor ed in th e bod y. Also it r ema ins in
the sa m e form un til converted into oxygen an d water, so it pr ovides no n our-
ishm ent of any kind. It aids in n either growth n or rep air. It is a u seless fluid in
the bod y, as far as help is concern ed; it is a dan gerous fluid in the b ody, when
all the da m age that it does is considered .
It neither b uilds up nor energizes any par t of the bod y. Instead it depr esses
the system a nd caus es a vicious add iction th at is difficult to break .
Drinking alcohol greatly hind ers pr oper nu trition for the b ody. Chron ic
alcoholics ar e always quite malnou rish ed. This is due to decr eased food intak e
(becau se they lose their a pp etite for food), decreased abs orp tion a nd utilization
of the food eaten (because of changes in the liver and digestive tract), and
increased need for food nutrients (because liquor-drinking increases body
requ iremen ts for calories an d cer tain vitamins , especially those of the B com -
plex).
Two ma lnutr ition d iseases th at alcoholics ar e m ost likely to develop ar e
these: (1) Beriberi, with its char acteristic dam age to the ner ves contr olling the
legs an d ar m s, or d am age to the genera l circulation, with weaknes s an d en-
largem ent of the hear t. (2) Pellagra , with a sor e tongue; ra sh over th e han ds ,ank les and neck; abdom inal pain, diarrhea, and serious mental changes.
Alcoholic consu m ption leads directly to severa l men tal diseases. A stud y by
Dr. Neil Dayton of Boston of over 5 6,00 0 p atients in Massach us etts, pr odu ced
the star tling discovery that chron ic alcoholism was a pr om inent caus e of one
fifth of all adm issions to m ental hosp itals in th at State!

Dr. Roger T. Williams of the University of Texas, a leading biochemist,
declares th at not on ly do a lcoholics ha ve a p oor d iet,but a poor diet tend s to
create alcoholics.
In s up por t of this, he s ays that d rink ing alcohol caus es a deficiency of the B
comp lex vitamins . But a lack of these vitam ins tend s to increas e the app etite
for carb ohydrates (sugar s a nd star ches). Alcohol, itself, being only a car bohy-
dr ate and a r obber of B vitamins, s tarts a vicious cycle within the h um an body.
By removing vitamins, it creates an artificial alcohol thirst.
Then ther e is Dr. U.D. Register of Lom a Lind a Un ivers ity in Califor nia. In
196 7 he cond ucted a ser ies of stud ies in which he fed a nor m al, Am erican diet
to rats.
The d iet consisted of hot d ogs, sp aghetti, m eat balls, sweet rolls, an d s oft
drinks. A control set of rats was given a diet of milk and vegetab les. In ad di-tion, b oth s ets of rats were given th e choice of 10% alcohol (abou t as m uch as
in wine), or p ur e water.
The rats that were fed the popular junk diet began tur ning m ore and m ore
to alcohol, until they were imbibing 12.8 ml. of it per 100 gm. of body weight
per week. Th e control grou p p referr ed water.
Then Dr. Register ad ded coffee to the pop ular dietand the alcohol con-
sum ption by those poor r ats shot up to 46 m l. per week!
It is of highest s ignificance th at after 10 weeks , the r ats on the p opu lar d iet
were switched entirely to the n utr itious diet, and within th e first week th eir
alcohol intake ha d gone down to 3.8 m l., and within thr ee weeks, m ost of the
ra ts h ad qu it alcohol entirely! This is imp ortan t news. If you want to q uit alcohol, you n eed to accom pan y
your other quitting activities with an improvement of your diet. Dr. Register
says it was a lack of the B vitam ins th at m ade th e difference in th e two sets of
rats .

A third resea rch grou p, h eaded by Dr. Abr am Hoffer of Sask atchewan,
Canada, an d Dr. Hum phr ey Osmond of Princeton, N.J. h ad noticed that m any
of the p eople suffering with the m ental disor der, schizophr enia, tended to have
earlier been a lcoholics. Th ey were also awar e of the Am erican S chizophr enia
Foun da tion d iscovery that from 20 to 40 % of alcoholics a re par tially schizo-
phr enic. So Hoffer an d Osm ond wonder ed whether both cond itions could be
redu ced through pr oper nutr i tion.
Wha t they did was to give m as sive dos es of niacin (B3), vitam in C, B6, an d
other vitam ins. The r esults of this m egavitam in therap y were repor ted in the
J uly, 196 8 issu e of the British J ourna l of Psy chiatry.
The ther apy pr ogra m was originally plann ed only for s chizoph ren ics, bu t
since 40 % of those who were to r eceive the tr eatm ent were a lcoholics, the
thera py was extended to them ,and also to other alcoholics who did n ot show
signs of schizophr enia. The res ults were dr am atically su ccessful.
A four th r esear ch group , head ed b y Dr. Russ ell F. Sm ith, m edical director
of Michigan State Boys Training School, conducted a study in which 507
alcoholics were given massive vitamin B3 therapy. As he later reported, An
average of 6 gram s of vi tamin B3 (niacin) was given to th em each day.
Conclud ing his r eport in the October 1 968 issue of the Am erican Schiz ophre-
nia Found ation New sletter, he said, 87% of our grou p of har d core, trea tm ent
r esista nt, d ifficult alcoholics d erived ben efit.
Vitamin B3 is a very low-cost vitamin. Comparing his vitamin therapy with
m ethods us ed elsewher e, he said, B3 far su rp ass ed them in effectiveness . This
compar ison becomes m ore effective when we rem ember that m any dru gs today
us ed in the treatm ent of alcoholism h ave a high p otential for ab us e and for
su icide. When th e niacin [vitamin B3] is u sed ins tead, thes e serious risk s
become virtu ally non existent. This is a great ad vanta ge indeed. B3 far s ur-
passes other therapeutic agents commonly used in the treatment of alcoholics
(Ibid.)
Probab ly the m ost significant factor in this stu dy has been th e large grou p
who un der took it who h ave stayed p erm anen tly off alcohol after th e testing was
completed.
Part way through h is stud y, Dr. Sm ith m ad e the d iscovery that vitam in C
m us t be used in conjunction with niacin. He was alerted to the ma tter when
some of the patients complained of sustained weakness, dry skin, occasional
ra sh es or odd dietary cravings. Realizing that th e large doses of niacin were
tending to dep lete vitamin C in the b ody, he began add ing good-sized dos es of
the latter. (Urine tests have revealed that no vitamin C was being excreted,
indicating that the patients on the high-niacin diet were lacking in it.) But
average doses of 100 0 m g. of vitam in C, given t o each pat ient d ai ly, s olvedthe pr oblem, and all the side effects disapp eared .
Dr. David Ram on Hawk ins, d irector of the North Nass au Mental Health
Center, provides us with a fifth study into ways to nutritionally stop alcohol-
ism. Seventy of his 31 5 s chizophr enic patients were confirm ed a lcoholics,

coffee drin king to a minim um , and exercise frequ ent ly.
It shou ld be noted her e that people that have both alcoholism and schizo-
ph ren ia are the ones m ost un likely to be helped ou t of their pr oblem. But the
res ults of Dr. Hawkins a pp roa ch were s pectacular, to say the least.
He said, By treating their sch izophr enia with m egavitamin thera py an d
simultaneously pushing them into Alcohol ics Anonymous , our r esults were
extrem ely good. Since we started us ing this new ap pr oach we have closed ou r
out-patient sh ock u nit. Hard ly any of these p atients need s to b e hosp italized
any m ore. The whole attitude of the patients a nd their families is so over-
whelm ingly different [that] there is no comp ar ison with the p revious situation.
In order to effect pr oper re sul ts th e vitam ins were given in large doses ,
somet imes a thousan d t imes larger than m inimum dai ly requi remen ts .
In add i t ion to B3, several other vi tam ins are used in the m egavi tamin
the rap y: vitam in C, pyridoxine (B6), B1, B12 , and vitam in E .
A sixth stud y, tha t was to pr ove qu ite revealing, was u nd ertak en b y Dr.
Ed m un d G. Flink, ch airm an of m edicine at West Virginia Univers itys m edical
school work ed for s om e tim e with alcholics, and concluded th at their alcohol-

identical to those exhibited by one who is seriously deficient in the trace min-
eral , magnesium. So un endur able are these sym ptoms that they m ake i t im -

But Dr. Flink d iscovered that a ll that was needed was for those com ing off
alcohol to simp ly take m ore m agnesium in th eir d iet. It did not even need to b e

would provide all the m agnesium th at they requ ired.
Dr. Flink s find ings were later confirm ed b y Dr. J ohn E. J ones of the West

Temporary help through physician-suppl ied drugs. It is true tha t there
ar e ph ysicians and sp ecial hosp itals for the r ecovery of alcoholics. First comes
the im m ediate withd ra wal. Often th ey will attemp t to r elieve the withd ra wal

chlordizepoxide, chlorpr omazine, m eprobam ate, pr omazine h ydr ochloride, orreserpine. The use of tranquilizers coupled with other therapeutic aids are

But ther e is dan ger in becom ing ad dicted to the tra nq uilizers, if they are

that s evere comp lications m ay res ult if tra nq uilizers a re later placed in a bod y

that th e use of tranq uilizers sh ould only be given un der the car eful control and

So tra nqu ilizers can be dan gerous . They ar e also un necessa ry if the total

alcoholic who solved his massive problems with liquorsimply by trying to
help an other get off of alcohol. He became s o concerned to help an other p ers on
qu it, that h e quit him self. Why? Becaus e now he ha d s om ething worthwhile to
live for, someth ing im por tant to do. The effort to help oth ers is enn obling and
str engthening to the m ind a nd the willpower.
Thous and s of reform ed a lcoholics can testify to the help th ey have received
from Alcoholics Anon ym ous. It presen tly has a m emb ersh ip of several hu nd red
thous and all over th e world. They hold r egular m eetings in cities an d towns all
over the land .
Many cann ot un der sta nd how AA can help s o effectively when it h as so littleorganization to it. AA has no officers , r equires no d ues. It ha s n o constitution
or b ylaws. Each local group is autonomous , and not un der outside control .
Its only pu rp ose is to help alcoholics stop d rink ing and stay stopped . That
is all it does, bu t it does it rem ar kab ly well.
Upon arriving for the first time at an AA meeting, an alcoholic is surprised
with the r eception. He walks in, well aware of his p hysical weakness , em otional
conflicts, guilt feelings, an d s ocial isolation. Often he ar rives weaken ed in every
way, an d without har dly a solid friend anywhere.
There he d iscovers that m any of the h app y, cheerful people have, in the
pas t, had far worse experiences th an he n ow lives with da ily. They are r ecov-
ered alcoholics. Hear ing their stor ies, s eeing their r eturn to em otional s tability,su ccessful emp loym ent, hap py social life, he takes cour age that per hap s ther e

The AA m emb ers do n ot condem n h im; they just want to help him get off

him coming back to forthcom ing m eetings. Whenever he wishes, he can call
anoth er AA m emb er on the ph one an d talk to him . He will freq uently be given a

At the h eart of the Alcoholics Anon ym ous pr ogra m is a firm acceptance of
the belief that the help of a Higher Power the help of Godis needed in order
to receive the str ength a nd res isting, overcom ing help that is needed.
Friends at AA encou r age him to k eep at it. He m ay fully leave alcohol imm e-

were helplessly in th e grip of alcohol, and how thr ough the encour agem ent of

During the m eetings they learn how alcohol acts on the bod y and they
consider poss ible reas ons why people get into alcohol to star t with. Th ey

Alcoholics Anonymous is people helping people. And this is what the alco-

4 DK Plan . Recently, a new grou p ther apy appr oach ha s been star ted that
m an y will find to be very helpful: It is called th e 4 DK Plan (Four -Dimen siona lKey to the Caus e of Alcoholism ). It is a plan of ba sic alcohol edu cation.
The 4 DK Plan looks at both alcohol and manin relation to lifes four
dim ensions physical, mental, social, and sp iritual. It explains an d im ple-
m ents th e latest r esear ch on the caus es of alcoholism, th e effects of alcohol
consum ption, an d the latest r ehabili tat ion m ethods.
This plan cons ists pr imar ily of four grou p s essions, sh owing what a lcohol
can d o to each of these four p ar ts of a hu m an life. Following this, those in
attendance learn how to com bat d rinking habits thr ough each dimension.
Much of the m ystery is th us taken out of the how to conqu er alcohol pr ob-
lem . Visual aids, foru m s, an d gener al discussion is sup plemented with m otion
picture films. Th e two specialists who d eveloped the 4 DK Plan ar e E.H.J.Steed, executive director of the Intern ational Comm ission for the Prevention of
Alcoholism , an d L.A. Sens ema n, M.D., longtime cha irm an of the Rhod e Island
Advisory Committee on Alcoholism. The plan is usually made available through
local hosp itals a nd non -pr ofit organizations .
Four featu r es of the 4 DK Plan ren der it especially flexible and helpful: (1)
The plan is educational an d is valuab le to anyone concerned with alcoholism ,
whether or n ot he dr inks . (2) The plan can be instituted in any com m un ity,
us ing local resour ces. (3) The plan ap pear s to be as h elpful to alcoholics as th e
well-kn own Five-Day Plan to Stop Sm oking has been to s m okers . (4) The p lan

is positive. It emphasizes good health and wholesome living.

In the tr eatm ent of alcoholic patients th ere ar e two stages to b e consid-eredone is the recovery from the acute alcoholism , and the other is th e han g-
over. The ess ential thing in the tr eatm ent of the form er is th e withd ra wal of
alcohol and en coura ging a good sleep.
Hang-over represents a sudden fall from the supposed pleasurable or at
least painless non-reality of acute alcohol intoxication into a new reality more
thr eatening than th at of the period pr eceding the bou t. The loss of self-esteem
cha ra cterizes th e over-all feelings of the alcoholic han g-over. Headach e is com -
m on, especially in those whose livers b ecome enlarged and tender du e to acute
inflamm ation of the liver. Thirs t is one of the m ain featur es, an d it is d ue to
per sp iration and the loss of water th rou gh excessive action of the kidneys.
Fatigue is expr essive of both th e em otional tens ion an d the exceptional de -
m and s d ur ing the episode of acute alcoholic intoxication.
The first thing which m ust b e done is the pr om pt an d total withd ra wal of
alcohol, as m ore alcohol in ever-incr easing doses is n ot a r emed y for th e ps y-
chological distu rb ances caus ed by its excessive us e, an d at tim es it is d ifficult
for alcoholic patients to accept this view. The patient will soon learn that his
m ental and p hysical pain can be relieved by mean s other th an b y the use of
alcohol. One of the imp ortan t things, which m us t be d one, is to allay the
patients fears , as m any tim es he worries abou t the irr epar able dam age don e to
the body over the long-continued use of alcohol.
Sleep is ess ential, and one of the best m eans of pr odu cing sleep is by the
use of pr olonged baths with the temp erature m aintained at a roun d 9 2 d egrees
to 94 d egrees. Quiet sur rou nd ings ar e absolutely essential. The diet is im por-tant, as it should n ot contain an ything of a stim ulating natu re, su ch as coffee,
spices, and condiments. Milk, eggs, fruits, and vegetables is the ideal diet, with
liber al use of oran ge juice and other fru it and vegetable juices to comb at loss of
fluids in th e bod y.
In m any instan ces the on ly way to pr operly contr ol the patient is to ha ve
him p laced in an ins titution where careful sup ervision can be car ried out. One
of the distressing things with those who have to deal with habitual alcoholics is
to see them str uggling with th ems elves, r em ors eful becaus e of their r epeated
falls, always declaring that they will never drink again, but invariably returning
to the use of alcohol.
The alcoholic patient ha s to sep ar ate him self from his old com pan ions, forthey frequently lead him to drink again. A complete change of life is essential,
and the best ch ange of all is a chan ge of hear t that com es from accepting Christ
as a p erson al Saviour. With His help th e alcoholic can obta in freedom which
can be gained in n o other way.The Problem of Alcohol, pp . 7-8.

SECOND , you m ust accept the fact that you can not d o it by your self. Only
in the s trength of God can it be don e. And you can only receive that str ength

FIFTH , you m us t m ak e som e cha nges in your life. You will ha ve to get m or e
exercise in the open air, an d m or e res t at night. You will have to pu t away the
things that tend to sep ar ate you from God. If television an d r ad io and the
m us ic and m agazines you are u sed to ar e pulling you away from God, then
thr ow them ou t. You m ay find tha t you h ave to m ake s om e new friends and
avoid som e old on es. Som e of the old ones would n ot care for your new way of
life. They would want your company in doing things you are no longer inter-ested in doing. The best s olution is to find new friend s. Go to chu rch regular ly.
Thats wher e you a re m ore likely to find better on es.
SIXTH, you may find it necessary to go on an init ial clean sing p rogram .
This will help expel the alcohol from your system more quickly. As with nico-
tine, the more quickly alcohol is out of your body, the more quickly the old
cravings will sub side. And su ch a pr ogra m will also help you over the initial
trem ors . As you kn ow, one mu st stop th ese dan gerous pr actices all at once;
they cann ot be p ut a way simp ly by gra du ally cutting down. This is where th e
following infor m ation m ay be h elpful.
In or der to carr y out this pr ogra m , you will need s om e one to help you. The
bath s m entioned below will help expel im pu rities from your body and helpovercome the alcohol habit. Continue them on in the years that follow. An
herbal tea sh ould be pr epared from the following powdered herbs : Equal par ts
of Skullcap, Catnip, an d Blue Vervain with no s weetening. Comb ine them , an d
place 2 tablespoons in a qu ar t of water that ha s been br ought to a boil and
then tur ned off. (Two quar ts sh ould last a day and a h alf, and can be kept
refrigerated un til used up .) An eight-ounce glass of tea sh ould b e tak en every
two hours, except when sleeping at night. This will relax you and help you
sleep.
First Day: Glass of water at 7 a.m . 8 oz., tea at 8. This is a relaxant tea and
will help you s leep. The idea h ere is the m ore sleep du ring withdr awal the less

you. At 6 p .m. each evening, tak e a h ot and cold s hower.
Second Day: Sam e as th e first d ay, bu t that evening you can have a glass of
tom ato juice with a teaspoon of cayenne in it. (The stom ach is u sed to the bite
of alcohol an d th e red p epper helps tak e its place just now. Do not use black
pepper!)
Third Day: Sam e as pr eceding days, but now you can ad d a m eal in the
evening of sliced tom ato, or if you p r efer, stay with th e tom ato juice an d ca y-

Fourth Day: The us ual pa ttern, except as follows: In th e mor ning, a sm all

Fifth Day: Eat nor m ally. The p rogram is over.

During the initial withdr awal and imm ediately thereafter, sleep is essen tial.
One m ethod of obtaining this is by the use of prolonged b aths (with the tem-

time ar e abs olutely essen tial. The d iet sh ould n ot includ e coffee, spices and
condim ents; in fact, they sh ould be per m anen tly stopp ed. It is now kn own that
these on ly whet the ap petite for a retur n to a lcohol. Fru it, vegetables and gra ins
ar e needed along with water to r eplace body losses .

Magnesium , a tra ce miner al, is n ow known to greatly red uce the with-

by Dr. Edm un d G. Flink , chairm an of the Depar tm ent of Medicine at th e West
Virginia Un ivers ity Medical School in 1 96 7. Th e severity of withd ra wal symp -

Niacin (B3) is now considered by man y researchers to be the most imp or-

you take niacine, your face will flush for a few minutes and get hot. That is
nor m al. Tak ing niacinam ide, instead of niacine elim inates th e flushing.)
There ar e other vitamins which ar e also considered im portant. Here ar e
several that a re u sed in m egavitam in thera py, in add ition to n iacin: Vitam in C,
Pyridoxine (B6), B1, B12, and Vitam in E . The entire B Complex works
together an d increas ed am oun ts of all the B vitamins s hou ld also be supp lied.
It shou ld be m entioned h ere that m assive B3 therapy depletes the am ount of
