HARtWOOD SPEED KILLCLIMB DRIVING SCHOOL o IIIC U i

TOP MARKS FOR SCHOOLThe Driving School's inaugural year has proved a resounding success.

Success in generating miles of smiles on the faces of those who have attended - which is what it is all about.

Success in enabling many of those who wish to take up speed hillclimbing to improve their performances beyond their wildest dreams taking seconds off their times in a sport where a tenth of a second is a lifetime!

Courses are not solely aimed at those wishing to embark on a competition career, but enable you to enjoy driving your car with verve in a controlled and safe environment.

No pressure is put on you to drive at a faster speed than you feel comfortable with but you will find your limits extended with expert tuition.

Top class tuition is provided by a team led by our Chief Instructor David Grace who has just clinched this year's RAC British Speed Hillclimb Championship, the sports most prestigious championship.

'If only' - life is too short for this much used term - enrol now and spice up your life by taking on the challenge of one of Britian's most prestigious speed hillclimb courses.

H id CLIMBChampionship 1998

TOUGH AT THE TOPJust think of the excitement if the five top Premiership football teams could win the championship in their last match. This is the scenario we have at Harewood today. Any one of the top five drivers could win the prestigious Yorkshire Auto Trader BARC Harewood Speed Hillclimb Championship.

LEADING CONTENDERS Bobby Fryers in his potent Clio Williams presently heads the table, the Skipton man's Clio is hounded by the rapid Lotus Elan of Guisborough's Colin Stewart. Third is Settle driver Jonathan Mounsey who has been exceedingly consistent and quick throughout the season in his tyre squealing Sapphire RS Cosworth. Blackpool driver Jamie Hylton has been a towering success. Jamie is the highest placed single seater driver in this season's championship and as well as his high overall standing, he presently leads the FTD championship. If you can forgive the pun, Malcolm Dungworth has peaked at the right time, the Derbyshire Peak District man with his 4 wheel drive turbocharged Sierra Cosworth engined Dax Rush, although presently in fifth place, could still snatch the championship.

DASH FOR CASHWith cash prizes down to 10th place, you can be sure that drivers will be on the limit. In 6th Huddersfield man Tim Wilson has been a consistent force in the top ten and in 7th is early season championship leader Haydn Spedding in his superb E Type Jaguar. Family illness has caused Peter Hamilton's withdrawal from the meeting and he will slide out of the top ten while Scarborough Formula Ford driver Jonathan Rhodes is 9th and the youngest member of the Pinder family, Daniel, rounds off the top ten in his pristine Vauxhall Nova Sport. As well as Van Diemen driver David Sturdy three other drivers are lurking just outside the top ten and could find their way into the reckonings, those are the cars of Tony Metcalf - Van Diemen, Peter Griffiths - Chevron 847 single seater and 1996 Championship winner Dennis Crompton - BMW 2002 Touring. All nail biting stuff.

ONLY FIVE ROUNDS COUNTAs only five of the six rounds are counted for championship placings drivers will now have to drop their lowest score. This may enable Formula Ford driver David Sturdy, who missed a round in June, to shoot up the leader board and challenge the top five championship drivers, as all the leaders will now have to drop their lowest score. One of the major successes of this years championship has been the wide variation of cars in the top ten, saloon, sports and single seaters abound and no one category has dominated this year.

FTD CHAMPIONSHIPIt's all ifs and buts in the FTD Championship - if Peter Griffiths scores over 6 points he will snatch the championship victory from under the nose of the present leader Jamie Hylton. Unfortunately for Jamie he has to drop scores whereas Peter can retain all the marks he scores in his Chevron. QMS driver Mark Lawrence in third place could be challenged by the Reynard of Mike Smith while the 3500cc Pilbeam of Alan Newton could snatch third if he takes Fastest Time of the Day and 10 points. It's so tight you can almost feel the tension.

LADIES CHAMPIONSHIPThe combination of the little road going modified Mini and Clare Sullivan have proved a consistent and effective force in this year's championship. Although Clare is poised to take the title she can still be overtaken by the OMS single seater of Leeds dental hygienist Lynn Owen who will be trying to extract the maximum out of the OMS she shares with husband Steve. One of the finds of the season has been Jenny Woodfield, who started her first season late and then further damaged her championship chances by missing another round. The Caterham driver has been playing catch up all season and she may rue missing the rounds as she would undoubtedly have taken the fight to Clare.
