2014

The only one of its kind, Yorkshire Sculpture Park is an extraordinary place that sets out to challenge, inspire, inform and delight.

Each year, thousands of people of all ages and interests enjoy exhibitions by some of the world’s finest artists within the grounds of a beautiful country estate designed in the 18th century.

This spring it is our pleasure to present the first large-scale survey in Europe by highly acclaimed American artist Ursula von Rydingsvard in the Underground Gallery and open air. The exhibition features wall-mounted works, monolithic structures and other complex forms made, by the artist, over the last 20 years.

An exhibition of sculpture and animations by young British artist Tom Price continues in the Bothy Gallery and Lakeside, and a touring exhibition from the Arts Council Collection, located at Longside Gallery, showcases Land art by some of the most important British artists of the last 50 years. YSP’s long established and vibrant Visiting Artist programme continues this spring with David Murphy and Molly Smyth.

YSP is proud to be part of the Yorkshire Festival: 100 days of art and culture ahead of the Tour de France.

URSULA VON RYDINGSVARD 05.04.14–04.01.15 Underground Gallery and open air

#ursulaysp

YSP presents the first large-scale survey of work in Europe by highly acclaimed American artist Ursula von Rydingsvard. The exhibition, her most extensive to date, illustrates the full scope of von Rydingsvard’s diverse practice, including over 40 works of drawing and sculpture made during the last two decades.

One of America’s most inventive artists, von Rydingsvard has evolved a distinctive, highly personal sculptural language that has become synonymous with cedar, the wood that lies at the heart of her practice. From the intimate to the immense, the exhibition – in which the majority of works, such as the monumental Blackened Word, 2008, are meticulously assembled from 4" x4" cedar beams – examines von Rydingsvard’s sustained investigation

of the simultaneous fragility and durability of existence, often relating to a personal history of displacement.

Bowl with Lace, a new, six-metre tall sculpture cast in bronze and made especially for the exhibition, greets visitors at the entrance to the Park and overlooks the 18th-century Bretton Estate. In the Underground Gallery, delicate works made with cows’ intestines, such as Stacked Blankets, 1995, are stitched like fabric, while others including Maglownica II, 2012-13, are stretched over wooden frames, like skin undulating over bones.

There is a rare opportunity to hear an in- conversation between the artist and YSP’s Executive Director, Peter Murray CBE, on 13 November. Book online at ysp.co.uk/events

Supported by Charina Endowment Fund; The Camilli Foundation; Roberta Denning; Agnes Gund; Joyce Linde; Morton and Estelle Sosland; Susan and John Diekman; Ann Hatch and Paul Discoe; The Maxine and Stuart Frankel Foundation for Art; Pat Gantz and Family; George Krupp; Joel and Sherry Mallin; Brian Hopkinson; Ann and Herbert Burger

JORDAN MCKENZIE: CARL AN(T)DRE + LEWITT LEAN 01.03.14–20.04.14 (11.00–15.00 daily) Boat House

#mckenzieysp

The exhibition in the lakeside Boat House shows two new films by Jordan McKenzie, recorded at YSP, which examine the relationship of sculpture to performance practice and art history.

Forming part of his wider on-going series, Minimal Interventions, McKenzie’s films examine themes of authenticity and authorship, momentarily poaching the work of another artist in order to inhabit it for his own ends. Carl An(t)dre, 2014, presents a performance by 20 people dressed as ants, creating structures inspired by Carl Andre’s infamous brick art work Equivalent VIII, 1966. His second film LeWitt Lean, 2014, is a new work showing performers leaning on Sol LeWitt’s sculpture 123454321, 1993.

JENNIFER ROBERTSON AND LYNNE FLETCHER: YORKSHIRE MADE ME 29.03.14–01.06.14 Garden Gallery

#yorkshiremademe

‘I am unbelievably proud to be Yorkshire born and to be included in this wonderful collection’, Dame Judi Dench

Yorkshire Made Me is a series of photographs, by Jennifer Robertson and Lynne Fletcher, of men and women who have reached the height of their various careers, celebrating the wealth and breadth of the county’s talent in the lead up to the Tour de France Grand Départ 2014.

The exhibition begins with Brian Robinson who was born in Huddersfield in 1930, and went on to become the first Briton to win a stage of the Tour de France, in 1958. The informal portraits capture a range of personalities from sport, politics, broadcasting and entertainment including Dame Judi Dench, Michael Palin and Nicola Adams.

TOM PRICE UNTIL 27.04.14 Bothy Gallery and Lakeside

#ysptomprice

The solo exhibition of sculpture, animation and work on paper by young British artist Tom Price, continues in the Bothy Gallery and Lakeside. Inspired by public observation, magazine images and historic sculpture, Price is rapidly establishing a strong reputation for his mastery of traditional techniques, representation of contemporary subject matter and consideration of identity.

The exhibition marked the open-air premiere of Network, Price’s largest bronze to date at 2.74m. In the form of a young man in casual dress focusing on his mobile phone, the 2013 sculpture references our social relationships in a world where we are increasingly connected through remote means.

YSP’s Bothy Gallery documents Price’s development of the male figure and fascination with the minutiae of body language and facial expression, from the 2008 nudes Orpheus Street and Ducie Street, whose titles are taken from locations near Price’s London studio; through sculptures on plinths, stop-motion animations, and photographic work from the Marble Draft series, 2010-13; to small heads, including Untitled (Cornrows) made in 2010.

EVENT Tom Price: The Artist In-Conversation 16.03.14 / 15.30 / Free (booking advised) Hear the artist in-conversation with Melissa Hamnett, Sculpture Curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

TOM FROST: THE WILD COLLECTION 21.06.14–07.09.14 Garden Gallery

South Wales-based illustrator Tom Frost takes inspiration from YSP’s historic landscape and varied wildlife to create new work including limited edition screen prints, ceramics and homeware – all of which is available to buy.

The Wild Collection highlights the joy of getting out into nature, studying it, and collecting specimens to keep, enjoy and preserve. The Garden Gallery exhibition transports visitors to a biology classroom, or a naturalist’s study, with works such as old school charts, matchboxes containing foraged finds, collector’s cards and stamps.

Frost studied illustration at Falmouth College of Art, graduating in 2001. His work is inspired by his passion for old matchboxes, vintage tin toys, folk art and children’s books.

HESTER REEVE: YMEDACA 28.06.14–07.09.14 YSP Centre, NAEA and open air

Hester Reeve continues her re-mapping of YSP as a contemporary translation of the very first university established by Plato in 5th century Greece.

Inspired by the National Arts Education Archive (NAEA) based at YSP, Ymedaca is both a conceptual sculpture and a concrete public event offering visitors a unique chance to experience creative activities inspired by the Platonic questions, ‘what is a good life, indeed, what is the good?’ and ‘how can education bring joy to the soul?’.

Ymedaca culminates in displays at the NAEA and in YSP Centre, and an experimental pop-up academy on 30 August with a series of events across the day.

UNCOMMON GROUND: LAND ART IN BRITAIN 1966 – 1979 An Arts Council Collection Touring Exhibition 05.04.14–15.06.14 Longside Gallery

Curated by Nicholas Alfrey, Joy Sleeman and Ben Tufnell, this exhibition features work by some of the most important British artists of the last 50 years including Tony Cragg, Antony Gormley, Richard Long and Anthony McCall.

In the late 1960s artists on both sides of the Atlantic turned away from the enclosed space of the gallery and went out into the landscape to forge a new form of art. This art was made in radically new ways often using earth, water, sun and even fire as raw materials, and went under several names: land art, earth art, process art, and conceptual art. Drawing largely from the

Arts Council Collection and supplemented by important loans from artists and major public institutions, Uncommon Ground: Land Art in Britain 1966 – 1979 takes a fresh look at the art of this period and considers what was particular about the way Land art developed in Britain.

The exhibition is complemented by an Upper Space display and a walking route which takes in site-specific works by Andy Goldsworthy, David Nash and James Turrell. Pick up the What’s On Today & Map leaflet and follow the Land art sculpture trail.

NEW WORK IN THE OPEN AIR

New work in the open air this season includes David Nash’s contrasting works 49 Square and Black Mound, both 2013; a new selection of works by Henry Moore including the monumental Large Two Forms, 1966-69 and Two Piece Reclining Figure: Points, 1969-70; and Julian Opie’s LED sculpture Galloping Horse. Lucy + Jorge Orta’s Woodland Spirit - Diana, 2013 has also been moved to its new home by the Lower Lake.

Spring also brings a new sculpture to the Park by world-renowned artist Thomas Houseago, as a result of Yorkshire Sculpture Triangle’s partnership with the Yorkshire Festival 2014. A second Houseago sculpture will also be positioned outside the Henry Moore Institute, Leeds where the Tour de France begins.

YSP WILD

This season we’re pleased to introduce YSP Wild – Wildlife Information, Learning & Discovery. YSP is well known for its interesting sculptures by famous artists but living alongside the artworks are many animals, birds, insects and plants which have made the Park their home.

Pick up a leaflet on your next visit to explore the Park’s different habitats and to see what animals you can spot. Or join us for a Wild Walk on the first Saturday of each month.

Visit ysp.co.uk/wild to find out more about wildlife at YSP or use hashtag #YSPwild to share your spottings on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

ASHA MUNN: FLY AWAY HOME Spring 2014 YSP Learning

Fly Away Home considers the dialogue between people’s lives, their homes and the natural world. The exhibition is a direct response to Breathing Space, a ground breaking project which researches the relationship between art therapy, the environment, young people, trained mentors and the artist’s own practice.
