MEDAL PRESENTATION York 11th December, 1982

PRESENTATION OF THE J O H N PHILLIPS MEDAL B Y THE PRESIDENT TO

FREDERICK M U N R O B R O A D H U R S T , M . S c , Ph.D., F.G.S.

Born and bred in Manchester, you have been associated with the North and with that city in particular ever since. Educated at Burnage Grammer School you became interested in geology during your schooldays. Then you elected to do your National Service as a Bevan Boy and the Victoria Park Colliery, Oldham gave you that close contact with the Coal Measures which in no small measure determined your future career. Our acquaintance is o f long standing for I was in my final year when you entered the University o f Manchester as a freshman in 1948. Here we both fell under the spell of the charming and omniscient Dr S.H. Straw, remembered affectionately by generations o f Manchester students, so that it was natural for you to continue in research and combine your interests in palaeontology and the Coal Measures. You thus became the first research student o f Dr Michael Eagar, also a John Phillips medallist o f this Society. Joining the staff o f the University of Manchester in 1952, you have taught palaeontology to students at all levels for thirty years and your interest in the use o f fossil population studies and fossil-sediment relationships in the Upper Carboniferous has been maintained and expanded by a whole series o f research students who have followed up your ideas. Neither has your interest been purely academic for with true entrepreneurial zeal you came within a hairsbreadth of persuading your Vice-Chancellor to buy a coal mine for the University. The pillar and stall drift mine at Bacup would have made a fine working museum and with the present financial stringency that affects the Universities, your Vice Chancellor must many times have rued the day when he could have so easily solved the University's fuel bill. One has a delightful vision of Final Year Undergraduates spending three months at the mine and three months stoking the University boilers to achieve a state o f grace and perhaps even the equivalent of a paper or two in finals!

You are not, however, simply a narrow specialist. Your year in Oslo in 1963-4 led to your involvement in Silurian palaeoecology and the supervision o f more research students working in this field. In co-operation with Dr. I .M. Simpson you also initiated a new phase of understanding o f the community structure o f Lower Carboniferous reefs coupled with the training of yet more research students.

Your interest in the broader field o f education, fully in the John Phillips tradition, led to your extra-mural lectures and booklet on the Building Stones of Manchester. It also nearly led to your arrest when security guards noticed your group taking an inordinate interest in a bank at a time o f active terrorist bombing activity. Besides your extra-mural work, where your popularity as a lecturer has placed you in great demand by local societies, you have led many field excursions for various societies including this one. You have been a keen member of the Manchester Geological Association since an undergraduate and have found time to sit on the Councils o f many scientific bodies. Your devotion to geology west o f the Pennines was recognised by the award o f the Silver Medal of the Liverpool Geological Society in 1976. Today it is our turn east o f the Pennines to honour you. On behalf o f the Council it gives me great pleasure to present you with the Phillips Medal.
