The York Mystery Plays 2012 combines the talents of over 1,500 volunteers working alongside theatre professionals to present an epic production which is set to be one of the theatrical highlights of 2012.

Wagon Plays The Historic Guilds of York will welcome other cities who own Mystery Cycles to take part in a free one hour performance on the York Wagons giving a wonderfulinsight into the different cycles born of the same period. Sat 11 & Sun 12 Aug, 12 noon starting from York Museum Gardens and processing to Dean’s Park.

YorkWalk YorkWalk will be offering walks following the sites that the Mystery Plays havevisited over the last 800 years and will include visiting the site of the 2012production at St Mary’s Abbey. Please see www.yorkwalk.co.uk for dates and times.

Modern Mysteries in Association with Snickelway Theatre Company & The Flanagan CollectiveAlongside Script Yorkshire, The York Mystery Plays team have developed six originalscripts based on modern interpretations of the medieval cycle of plays. They will beperformed as pre-show entertainment from 6pm in York Museum Gardens.

Mystery Cycle LecturesArs Lundendi will explore the history behind the mystery in a lively introduction tothe rich and complex history of the York Mystery Plays from their medieval rootsto the modern day. Sun 12 & Sun 26 Aug, 3pm at Tempest Anderson Hall in theYorkshire Museum.Tickets £10, available from York Theatre Royal’s box office.

1212: The Making of the City ExhibitionThe Yorkshire Museum’s Medieval Gallery marks the 800th anniversary of York’sindependence, telling the story of medieval York and celebrating the people, placesand events that have contributed to the city’s medieval heritage. Open daily 10am - 5pm, £7.50, children free. York Theatre Royal’s Young ActorsCompany will bring some of this history to life in free performances at 11am,1pm & 3pm on 21 & 22 Jul and 1pm & 3pm on 23 July.

The medieval cycle of York Mystery Plays hasbeen performed by the people of York acrossthe centuries and is a world-famous part ofthe city’s cultural heritage.

From Creation to the Last Judgement, these playsform one of the greatest stories ever told. Insummer 2012, the story of God, of man and womanand of the cosmic struggle between good and evilwill be presented on an epic scale against themagnificent backdrop of St Mary’s Abbey in York.

For the first time since 1988 in a production of thissize, the Plays will return to York Museum Gardens,where a 1400-seat covered theatre will beconstructed within the ancient walls of the Abbey.

Taking place in the same year that London hosts theOlympic Games, this international event will also bea major part of York’s 800th anniversarycelebrations of the granting of its Civic Charter. Anexciting festival atmosphere will be created both inthe Gardens and throughout the city, withentertaining fringe events and a celebration of thebest of Yorkshire food and drink.

Presented by York Theatre Royal, Riding LightsTheatre Company and York Museums Trust andsupported by City of York Council, this bold,accessible adaptation of the Plays is by York writerMike Kenny, who also adapted E. Nesbitt’s TheRailway Children for the Olivier award-winningproduction by York Theatre Royal and the NationalRailway Museum.

Over 1,500 people from the local community havejoined with a team of professional artists andtechnicians to create this spectacular production.

This august 30,000 people will experience the North’s most spectacularpiece of Theatre. A cast of over 600 people will tell thegreatest story ever told in one of thecity’s most iconic medieval settings.
