YHQG Tuesday meetingsToronto Botanical Garden,777 Lawrence Avenue East, Toronto

Next meeting: Tuesday, May 15 at 7 p.m. - AGM

YHQG is a scent-free zoneA friendly reminder to members and guests to refrain from wearing perfume when attending our meetings and workshops. Let’s be considerate - some members are highly allergic to scents. Thank you!

President’s MessageIt’s hard to believe that almost a year has passed since I was elected President of YHQG, and what a year we’ve had! There are so many people to thank for making the year a great success and I would like to thank them all. To our members for attending the monthly meetings, for helping out if and when you could, for making quilts for worthy causes via Community Quilts, and for buying fabric or books, not only from our vendors, but from YHQG! I’m grateful for those members who shared their skills with the rest of us at our Community Night. Without each and every one of our members, we would not exist.

A special thank-you to all members of this year’s executive: •To our Membership Chair, Phoebe Visser, for ensuring that membership ran so smoothly. •To our Library Chair, Shirley Stalford, because keeping track of hundreds of books is not always easy. Just getting the books out for each meeting takes time and effort. •To our Program Co-Chairs - the speaker/workshop lineup you put together for 2017/18 was second to none! The speakers entertained, they made us think in ways we might not have conceived and on a personal note, they prompted me to get to back to my machine and create!

• To our Workshop Chair, Leslie Batt (even with a broken arm), who effortlessly handled workshop sign-ups and for ensuring the classrooms for the workshops were set up appropriately.

• To Donnaleen Vlossak and Paul Tragni, our Display and Competition Co-Chairs, thank you for managing a key component of our meetings: showcasing our members’ work and that of our speakers.

• To Wendy Dines, our Community Outreach Chair, wow! CQ have outdone themselves this year. And we now have two locations for our members to congregate at each week.

• To our Webmistress, Valerie Prideaux. Thank you for keeping our website up-to-date and relevant. I especially appreciate seeing the photos of the quilts presented after each meeting!

• To our Quilt Show Chair, Jane Cramer (and the rest of the quilt show committee and volunteers) what an amazing show you put together this past November. YHQG has such depth of talent – traditional through to modern.

• To our Newsletter Editor, Janet Patterson, thank you for such a great newsletter and for fine-tuning my messages so that they are much better!

• And to the other executive members that you may not see in action, but are vital to the smooth running of our organization: our Treasurer, Chrystle Stucky, our Secretary, Karen McMillan and our Past President, Jane Cramer. To Jane, a special thank-you for stepping back into the position when Laurissa Werhun needed to step down due to family concerns.

Our final meeting of the year includes a formal segment, the Annual General Meeting, when we will report back to the membership and elect our executive for 2018/19. The President’s Challenge quilts will be on display (at last count, we have 40 entries). Viewers’ choice ballots will be distributed, so come and vote for your favourite pieces in three categories. Aren’t you curious to see who will win the prizes? And one more incentive … Door Prizes!

Come, share, quilt!

COMMUNITY QUILTING NEWS

Thank you for the 22 quilts received by CQ at the April meeting!

From their own stash: Phoebe Visser (5!), Joan Lester & Katie Pidgeon

Completed CQ quilts: Leslie Batt (2), Bob Gutcher (2), Janice McBride ( 2 & a comfort quilt), Martha Huffman, Jan McGoey, BJ Reid, Bev Clark, Sylvia Rochetti, Maria Steventon, Holly Doll, Chris Trottier, Susan Gaston, Wendy Dines. Thanks to Renate Kelley for the fabric donation.

The impromptu fabric sale held at the April meeting was a resounding success, raising $422.20 which will pay for the roll of batting that is on order. Thanks to all the shoppers who felt the need to add to their stash!

At the May meeting, we will have some books, thread and sundry items for sale.

Since this will be our last meeting of the year, it is hoped that members will consider taking multiple quilt sandwiches to complete over the summer months. If you are a long-arm quilter, packages of quilt tops, batting, backing and binding will be available. Please contact me if you would like more than one so that we can prepare sufficient packages and sandwiches.

WORKSHOPSAfter a very busy year taking care of the Workshops portfolio for the guild, I have to say that it has been a wonderful period of opportunity for members to enjoy learning new techniques and stretching their imaginations.

I thank all of those who participated and brought enthusiastic energy to the classrooms. Without you, the instructors would certainly be a sorry sight speaking to an empty room. Each of our guests brought their own unique style and personality. We had a full house for Cynthia England’s workshops in April and those who attended the lecture had a taste of her distinctive sense of humour. Earlier workshops held this guild year were also well-attended.

It has been my great pleasure to serve in this capacity and I look forward to doing so again for the next guild year, along with my new co-chair Donnaleen Vlossak.

I'm holding my breath to see the line-up of teachers and speakers for 2018-2019, which will be announced at the May meeting.

Happy stitching!

~ Leslie Batt, Workshops

Provincial Wildflowers Quilt PatternI am looking for a new copy (or used one) of the provincial wildflowers quilt pattern. The pattern was on sale in the Canadian Living Magazine in 1985. I would love to make it.

Please contact me - Micheline Nomura – if you have it or know how I can get it. [email protected] or 416-221-8903

Free to a Good HomeUpholstery fabric samples. Various sizes from 9” x 20” up to 24” X 36”. I have been trying for many years to use up this treasure trove by making bags, sewing machine mats, etc. and still have a 5-foot stack. I’d be happy to part with all of it or just reduce the height of the pile.

E-mail Fran Auty - [email protected] if you are interested.

A sincere thank you to Laurel Rowbotham and Carol Findlay for helping out at the very busy Membership table at our April meeting.
