I don’t know who first penned this phrase, but it surely describes mine and LaRee’s experience at the end of our first full year at York. The College has been blessed by God in so many ways during the last year. It is hard to comprehend, much less fully appreciate, how much success we have had in every area of the campus.

We began last fall offering each full-time student a private room and an iPod touch. These, coupled with a newly renovated cafeteria and an increased sense of energy, led to an 8.5% enrollment increase last fall. A great start and an exceptional student body turned into a 93% retention rate and a 17% increase in student numbers in our spring semester. In May, we began York College Online, further increasing our ability to reach students and transform lives. Thanks to many blessings, the College will once again end the year in the black.

Our athletic teams had some of their greatest successes in recent history. In the spring semester alone, women’s softball finished 2nd in the conference tournament, five wrestlers qualified for nationals, and our track and field program sent six athletes to nationals. Most recently, the Panther baseball team won the conference title for the first time and played in the opening round of the NAIA National Championship in Lubbock, Texas. These young men made a name for themselves and York College not only in their playing ability, but in their character and demeanor as they represented YC.

Most important, we are seeing more young men and women dedicate their lives to Christ and go out into the world prepared academically, socially and spiritually. From numerous baptisms during the year to our students taking a lead in service through spring and summer missions, we are witnesses of God’s amazing work in their lives. As always, I invite you to come home to York whenever you can. Much has changed, but the heart of the place, a close family atmosphere and a dedication to spiritual growth, remains the same. And because it’s home, you know you are always welcome here.

The two-year-old class at the East Point Church of Christ ap-pears to be interested in most of what the young lawyer is saying. It certainly helps to have visual aids to keep their attention. They

know nothing of estate planning and trust administration or partnership law for that matter, but some of the words about God’s law and his love for them are beginning to take hold. And they know Ms. Shannon would never fib about something like that.

Shannon (Lacey) Braun, YC Class of 2001, is at home in Wichita, Kansas, where she grew up and attended church with her family. As an adolescent she heard plenty about York College from her former youth minister Tim Lewis and made the 3½ hour trip north to the YC campus many times for Soul Quest and other events.

“We were the luckiest youth group in the world to have Tim,” Shannon said in an interview. “He is more responsible than anyone for my attending York College. In high school I remember Tim talking about how his time at York was one of the best experiences of his life. He really instilled in all of us what a special place York was.”

Along with her best friend, Kristi Pryor, Shannon made York her second home and quickly made an impact on the student body, serving as president of the freshman class. Throughout her four years, Shannon remained active in her social club and student

government. As a junior she held the role of vice president of Delta Chi Alpha and was the secretary of Student Association.

When asked how York stretched her faith-walk, Shannon commented, “I grew up always going to church and was very involved in my youth group in high school, so that was all second nature to me. However, attending York helped me put all of what I was taught growing up into action. Other than my parents, I would say York is mainly responsible for shaping who I’ve become as an adult.”

She reflected on how fortunate she was to take a couple of Bible classes with Dr. Tom Schulz before he died of cancer in 2000. “Dr. Schulz was one of those incredible people that you feel lucky to have known during your life. Even though he was absent a lot during that last semester because of his illness, I will never forget the strength and dignity with which he carried himself even as his health deteriorated. I cannot think of a better example of Christian living!”

Shannon further commented that her experience at YC was one of the best times of her life. “I made so many life-long friends there; I can’t imagine a better college expe-rience. The education I received at York was outstanding and more than prepared me not only to continue my education, but to ex-cel in law school. The small class size and individual attention I received at York, I believe, put me at an advantage in law school compared with students that at-tended large universities where class size was often in the hundreds.”

Upon graduating summa cum laude with a B.B.A. in Business Administration and a B.A. in English, Shannon was accepted into the University of Kansas School of Law where she received her J.D. (Order of the Coif) in 2004. She passed the Kansas Bar that same year and began her practice at Morris Laing. On January 1, 2010, she was named a partner.

Besides her duties at the firm she is a frequent speaker at continuing legal education seminars both for the Wichita Bar Association and other organizations and gives presentations at various non-profit organizations and other businesses about estate planning. She served on the Board of Directors of the Wichita Women Attorneys Association from 2007-08. Recently, she was selected by Super Lawyers magazine as a

Traveling Children’s Theater made its Kansas City debut, performing for the Leadership Training for Christ (LTC) convention April 2. Their production of Shirley Pugh’s In One Basket was well re-ceived by the 3rd-12th grade audience and had something for every-one. Each cast member played an astounding 5-6 parts in the hilarious 70 minute show, each part deserving its own costume change.

The 14-member cast performed the show 22 times during the spring semester, primarily for elementary schools around the state. At the end of each production, spectators were able to ask questions about the performance, the set, and the costumes. Associate Professor of Communication, John Baker was in his thirteenth season as director. Assisting him this year was Kayla Lawrence.

Spring 2010 graduate, Mason Lee came a long way for basketball and found a place that changed his life. When Mason made the big move from High Island, Texas in fall 2006, he says, “My goals for myself were completely different than they are now. My career goals were different; the things I wanted out of life were dif-ferent. I came to York really just wanting to get a de-gree, and to move on to the next part of my life, to make money or to be successful.”

Mason experienced a community where his “goals have really changed from what I want, to where does God want me to be in my life and how is God using me and how is God guiding me to further His king-dom?” Personal nurture from YC staff and professors gave Mason an entirely new per-spective as he was challenged to participate in York’s campus ministry and ultimately to help lead those ministries. Mason will pursue graduate studies this fall hoping to one day teach and help prepare others for ministry. Summarizing his four years and its impact on him, Mason says, “The amazing thing that York does is it takes those goals you have for yourself but it shows you how God is glorified in those and . . . gives you a new set of values to understand that you’re really second in your life. That it’s not about your story or the goals that you have but it’s about God’s story and where you fit into that.”

The average person looking at the areas of law Shannon specializes in—estate planning, estate and trust administration, real estate, and general corporate and partnership law—might wonder about her career satisfaction. Don’t… there’s no need for second-guessing. For Shannon, the areas of law she has made her niche are, in a word, “Great!”

“A lot of times it’s hard for me to believe that I do what I do. Sometimes I feel like a kid playing a lawyer,” she said with a laugh. “I love that sense at the end of the day that I’m really helping people.” lll

PBL-SIFE Wins at RegionalsTeam named 1st runner up in overall competition

A fter presenting a report on their year-long community outreach projects to a panel of business leaders, the York College Phi Beta Lambda-Students In Free

Enterprise (PBL-SIFE) team was named 1st Runner Up in the SIFE USA Regional Competition held March 22 in Minneapolis. The event was one of ten regional competitions held across the United States in March and April.

During the 2009-10 academic year, YC students organized 34 projects in the York community, logging over 2,900 hours of work and impacting over 8,000 people from elementary age to adult. Their projects were judged at the competition on creativity, innovation and effectiveness.

Earlier in the year York College junior, Landon Bailey of North Platte, Nebraska walked away with a $1,000 first prize in the four-year college division of the 1st Annual Make it Happen—Student Quick Pitch Competition hosted by the Nebraska Center for Entrepreneurship.

When tragedy struck, he found his York College colleagues ready to cover classes and labs so he could respond to the pressing needs of people in Haiti.

WITH THE FUTURE OF A NATION AT STAKE, HOPE COMES IN ALL SHAPES AND SIZES

Most weekdays, Dr. Mark Pearson’s routine includes lectures in the classroom and biology labs. But the 7.0 earthquake that devastated Haiti

on January 12 changed his routine for many days to come and inserted him back into a place he loves and knows so well.

An assistant professor of biology at York College, Pearson came to York following five years serving as a medical missionary in Haiti. Then came the January day when he, along with the rest of the world, watched pictures of a shattered Port au Prince. For Pearson though, the quake was deeply personal, touching the lives of friends and former co-workers as it ravaged a city whose landscape he knew well.

A few days later, Pearson’s Saturday morning sleep was disrupted by a phone call from friend and long-time medical mission co-worker, Dr. Bob Whittaker. Some of Pearson’s first international experiences were spent alongside Whittaker at the Nigerian Christian Hospital in the 1990s.

This time, Whittaker’s message was succinct: “Let’s go to Haiti and help.” Within days of Whittaker’s phone call, Pearson joined him on a flight into the Dominican Republic, a truck ride into Haiti and fourteen days of non-stop activity. While assisting on relief efforts where possible, they also evaluated the situation for ongoing needs.

Pearson found devastation more widespread than any television pictures could suggest: hun-

dreds of people suffering in their beds with broken and crushed bones, a scarcity of drinking water, and bedlam at food distribution sites. They also found compassion, hope and a will to start over.

Joining doctors from around the world, Pear-son found himself facing injuries of all kinds. Bone fractures, chest compressions and lacerations from concrete and rebar were common. His experience with radiology usually landed him a job operating the X-ray machine. “I hardly took a picture [X-ray] that wasn’t a fracture,” he says.

Whittaker’s experience as an ob-stetrical/gynecological surgeon made him invaluable for labor and delivery. Pearson joined him on night shifts in less than ideal conditions, delivering babies alongside Haitian student doc-tors.

“We scrounged everywhere to find things,” such as drugs, anesthet-ics, syringes and wound dressings, Dr. Pearson recalls. Medical supplies already in the country were “overrun” in the first three days after the earth-quake.

While his main purpose was “fact-finding,” Pearson’s days included truck trips to buy food for distribution, construction work rebuilding an orphanage, and about five hours’ sleep between his day work and night-time shifts at temporary hospital facilities.

Dr. Pearson’s association with Haiti began with his first visit in 1991. Through annual mission trips and six years of permanent residency, he had acquired a working knowl-edge of the country and the culture. Much more, he found a place and people he loves. Leaving Haiti for health rea-sons in 2005, that backdrop of knowledge and passion shaped his perspective as he assisted relief agencies operated by members of the

churches of Christ to determine their next steps for relief and rebuilding in Haiti.

Now as he works with students every day, he can’t help but recall his own collection of experiences in medical missions. Reflecting on his own odyssey in health care since 1991 he says, “The things I remember most were the times I had with Dr. Bob Whittaker and Dr. Henry Farrar and how much they taught me about Christianity as well as medicine and the way to treat people in great need. I could never repay them. I love teaching at York College and hope to inspire many more to follow in the footsteps of missionary work.”

With a dream of one day returning to Haiti or another mis-sion point, Pearson may even be recruiting future co-workers from the students who see how faith and science can be lived

out. “Almost every night, just before I close my eyes, I see the faces of so many of my friends and Christian family as well as many patients in Haiti and in Africa, and dream of one day returning to work full time there again.” With many great oppor-tunities to serve around the globe, every student and co-worker who shares his passion for medical missions will be a welcome partner. lll

• YC Campus Ministries headed up a campus and community-wide effort to raise funds for Haiti relief with their campaign “In Their Shoes – Hope for Haiti,” selling shoelaces for $5 a pair with all the profits going to Haiti relief. • York College Student Association sponsored a dodge ball tournament and raised over $300 for Haiti.

• The community of York was invited to campus each Thursday evening in February to join the York College family in a time of prayer for Haiti.• YC students pooled together over $500 at a benefit concert by guitarist Caleb Hawley, a former York College student and graduate of Berklee College of Music.

• The York College Concert Choir donated the proceeds from CD sales and general donations from their annual community concert held in January.

Dr. Dale R. Larsen passed peacefully from this life on December 29, 2009. He was the last surviving member of the team who negotiated to re-open York College as a school affiliated with Churches of Christ in the mid-1950s. He began working with the college when it re-opened in 1956 and served as president from 1960-1978. Larsen’s tenure of 18 years is the longest of any president in the 120-year history of the college. After retiring from the presidency, he served as chancellor and assisted the college during major transitions of the 1980s and 90s. In his multi-faceted role as a visionary who helped to re-open the school, vice president with the college’s first administrative team, president and chancellor, Larsen has been one of the most influential figures in York College history.

“He was a man of great honor and integrity. Without his contributions of time, effort and wisdom in the early years this place would not exist today,” said YC president Steve Eckman. “It is his vision that we now all live out. Dale always cared deeply for this place. Those of us who have served as president have often gone to him for advice and perspective. That voice and influence will remain even though he is not present in body. Dale will be greatly missed by all of us here.”

Dr. Larsen is survived by his wife of 65 years, Raylene, his children, Aloha Humphrey and Zayne Larsen, four grandchildren, brother, Glenn, and many other loved ones.

Ask any college student what he or she is looking forward to as the semester gets underway in Janu-ary, and you can almost count on the response having something to do with spring break. York College students are no different. By mid-March,

they know the batteries will need to be recharged—a week-long break is exactly what the doctor ordered. A break from books, lectures, and term papers…well, yes—but not neces-sarily a break from hard work and early morning wake-up calls.

Spring break missions have been an integral part of the YC landscape for decades. Through the years, students have

traveled to Canada, Mexico, and about a third of the states, reaching out to those in need, encouraging other Christians, or just lending a helping hand. Some of these same students will also give a significant portion of their summers in an over-seas outreach. Taking the focus off their own needs and stepping out into the unknown and unfamiliar can be a student’s most refreshing and rejuvenating experience. It can be a life-changing event, or as any college student might exclaim, “It was epic!”

Service clubs take the lead in these efforts and this year logged over 4,000 miles during the break.

• The men of Sigma Tau fol-lowed up with their previous work last spring with Dry Bones. This special organization reaches out to homeless and neglected kids on the streets of Denver, Colo-rado.

• Alpha Chi Epsilon and Beta Beta Sigma headed south to Rock Springs, Texas, to prep Camp Eagle for all the kids it will serve throughout the summer.

• The ladies of Delta Chi Alpha and Theta Psi teamed up to put on a VBS for the inner city ministry kids in Nashville, Tennessee.

• Omega Phi and Kingsmen volunteered with His Hands Ministries and worked at Food Bank of the Rockies in Denver.

SONGFEST

The high energy, three-night production of Songfest once again put the students of York College front and center with teens visiting campus during spring high school days. Although the show’s duration is around 110 minutes, it

represents thousands of student hours over the course of the year. Roughly one fourth of the student body is involved with the production that began as a talent show in 1978. In its 33rd anniversary, social clubs are still putting their best teamwork and creativity to work along with the talents of hosts and hostesses.

Long before the curtain rolls back for the opening number, representatives from each club are busy with pre-production selections in music, choreography, and theme. Crucial points that are tabulated at the end of the last finale may have been awarded before students leave for Thanksgiving break. Meeting deadline requirements and student participation in practices carry a significant share of what goes into a show.

Only one brother/sister club can walk away with the grand prize of being chosen for the overall President’s Award, but that’s just the icing on the cake. Caleb Rush and Aubrey Sanchez of Sigma Tau/Theta Psi clubs recognize the hard work involved, but put it well when they said, “If we aren’t having fun doing it, it’s not worth it to us.”

Songfest Director, Dr. Clark Roush, said, “One of the greater purposes of Songfest is the camaraderie and close-ness that develops within the clubs. Their tireless devotion inspires and encourages me! This show is the only perfor-mance opportunity some of our students have, and we feel it is an important part of their development while at York.”

At the completion of Saturday night’s performance, clubs anxiously awaited with the audience to hear the judges’ tally of their three-night production. Delta Chi Alpha and Kyodai’s Rocking the Sea tied for Best Music award with Beta Beta Sigma and Alpha Chi Epsilon’s Where the Wild Things Are. Best Costumes and Best Choreography were also won by Beta and AXE giving them the overall President’s Award for best club show. lll

become the academic hub of the college. With the addition of the Student Success Center and two state-of-the-art class-rooms, York College will be able to emphasize the core of our academic purpose in ways never before possible. While the grant will improve technology campus-wide, the Middle-brook classrooms will be newly constructed and accessible for everyone. The Title III grant allows us to address one of our greatest needs on campus, improving student academic success.”

Development of the academic success center will occur over a five-year, multi-stage process that will provide students with access to the facility, renovated space and enhanced technology. In addition to access to the success center, the renovations will provide access to smart classrooms and an increased portion of the faculty. Construction began in late April with projected completion during the fall semester. lll

Thanks to the award of a Federal Title III grant and other generous gifts, York College is taking its first steps to develop an academic support center during the summer break in the college’s Middlebrook Hall.

The new student success center combined with enhanced ac-cess will provide a new level of academic service for students.

Ms. Erin DeHart, coordinator for special populations ser-vices and tutoring, noted that there are many instances when students need academic help whether it be transition-ing from high school to college, study skills, or learning strategies. “The Stu-dent Success Center can provide the structure to help students achieve aca-demic success. Our goals are to find the best outcome for every student,

assist each one as an individual however we can, and find a way for everyone to achieve their maximum potential,” said DeHart. “With the right setting, enhanced resources and easy access, our goals have become much more attainable. The winners are our students.”

During its history, Middlebrook has served a wide variety of needs from student housing and cafeteria services to ad-ministrative and faculty offices and an athletic weight room. The $2 million Title III grant focuses on student success adds a new purpose for the facility and a timely one, enhancing the academic success of current YC students. In addition to the U.S. Department of Education award, funds for the project are being provided by the York Community Foundation as well as

York College Athletics

Aterrific run would be an understatement for the Panther baseball team as they demonstrated throughout their 2010 season a championship mentality. Under head coach Nick Harlan and as-

sociate head coach Brian Walth, the men in blue set an all time YC winning record at 45-9 and for the first time won the conference regular season and tournament championship.

Ranked as high as 17th in the nation, the Panthers headed to Texas for the Lubbock Bracket of the NAIA Nation-al Championship. York was seeded #2 behind the defending National Champions, Lubbock Christian University.

In the opening round of the tournament, the Panthers closed out the Avila University Eagles 11-1 with MCAC Pitcher of the Year Bruce Amende (12-0) throwing a com-plete 4-hit game. The bats were hot early for York as they scored 6 in the first inning and had 11 hits on the day. MCAC Player of the Year Justin Lunday hit two homeruns and had four RBI’s for the Panthers.

After blitzing Avila, the Panthers’ offense started out again on fire in game two against LCU with Josh Warren hit-ting a solo homerun on the very first pitch of the game. York

went up 5-0 on the LCU Chaps but couldn’t silence their bats as the opponents erased the lead with their 16 hits for the game, winning it 15-8. In game three, the Lancers of Mount Marty College jumped out to an early lead after the first in-ning and never looked back as they ended York’s champion-ship hopes in a 12-5 victory. The Panthers ended the season ranked #19 in the NAIA Coaches Top 25.

YC baseball had more honors than any other team in the conference with six players named 1st Team All MCAC, three more athletes named 2nd Team, and three named Gold Glove winners. Along with Pitcher of the Year and Player of the Year honors, Coach Harlan was named MCAC Coach of the Year. lll

Softball Finishes Second in Conference TournamentUnder first year head coach Tori Means and assistant Niki Ploen, the Lady Panthers finished in style

as they qualified at the end of the season for the conference tournament. Seeded #4 in the stand-ings, York met #1 seed Bellevue University in the first round and lost a hard-fought 3-2 decision in the 7th inning. The loss didn’t seem to hamper the mood for the Panthers as they came back that same afternoon and eliminated Peru State from advancing in the tournament with a 5-4 victory. On day two of the MCAC tournament the bats were hot for York as they took out College of St. Mary 6-1, advancing to the champion-ship game against Bellevue. The Panthers finished with a second place finish in the tournament with the final game going 7-0 in the Bruin’s favor. First Team All MCAC Devyn Pearl pitched in all four games of the tournament for a total of 27 innings. Named 2nd Team All MCAC were Brenda Perry - catcher, Alexis Paspalof - 2nd base, and Angel Gray - short stop.

Track and Field Sends Six to Nationals

In its inaugural year, the YC track program made the most of being re-established as a varsity athletic program under head coach Derek Kite and assistant Justin Carver. Three

student-athletes qualified for the NCCAA Indoor Tournament in Cedarville, Ohio, in Febru-ary. Joined by three additional athletes in the program, those same three students also qualified in the spring for the NCCAA Outdoor Tournament in Upland, Indiana.

Wrestling Names New Head CoachAfter a successful season in which five wrestlers: Bryan Irsik, Jason Lloyd, Nick McGrew, Jamel Wheatley,

and Bryan Williams qualified for the NAIA National Tournament in Oklahoma City, Greg Smith announced his resignation as head coach and named as his successor Ramon Diaz. Diaz,a high school All-American in 1986, finished third in the 1994 World Trials in Greco-Roman wrestling and was a 2008 US Veterans National Champion in freestyle. Most recently, Diaz was an assistant coach at Concordia University. Coach Smith is taking the opportunity to pursue some educational goals but will stay on staff as an assistant coach.

Woodrow W. KirkLongtime sociology professor

at York College, Woodrow W. Kirk passed away April 2, 2010. Woody and Kathryn made York College their home in 1968 and gave 30 years to what they deemed a ‘higher calling.’ Alumni remember with fondness Woody’s marriage and family lec-tures, his honesty and straightfor-wardness. Of course they also find it hard to think of the registrar’s office without Kathryn’s welcoming smile.

When the Kirks retired in 1998 and made their move to Texas, they deeded to the college their house across from campus. They were strong proponents of the institution’s mission and had a great impact on YC students. Their influ-ence will always be embedded within life at York College.

Smith Kite1920 - 2010

Smith Kite (89), longtime preach-er and friend of the college, passed away April 18, 2010. Kite served more than 40 years as an advisory board member and later as a trustee for the college. Smith went into fulltime ministry in 1948 and served for sixty-two years in eight churches in Texas, Kansas, Wyoming, and Nebraska. He preached in numerous gospel meet-

ings across the U.S. and Canada as well as spoke at lectures and youth camps. He was the pulpit minister for the Church of Christ in Gothenburg, Nebraska at the time of his death.

He and Mary, his wife of 70 years, have four sons: Terry, Syd, Paul, and David, nine grandchildren, and sixteen great grandchildren. Their grandson Derek Kite is the head coach of the track and cross country program at YC.

Smith was presented with a bachelor’s degree from York College when he was the commencement speaker at the 2008 graduation.

Soul Quest, June 13-19

York College is proud to host its 28th annual camp for middle school and high school students again this summer. This year’s keynote speaker will be Rich Little, minister for the Naperville

Church of Christ in Naperville, Illinois. Soul Quest is for 6th-12th grade campers and features incredible worship times, exciting classes and activities, and awesome friendships with teens from across the country. Legacy Alumni Reunion, June 22-24

It has been two years since the Legacy Alumni (pre-1956) were together on the YC Campus. For a few days in June, this group will be together once again enjoying their own version of The York

Experience. Bring photo albums and yearbooks from home along with newspaper clippings and YC memorabilia to display. Alumni Choir Reunion, June 25-27

The Choir Reunion in 2006 was such a success with just over 100 participants, representing 17 states and six decades of alumni, that a follow-up reunion had to be planned. Now it will be here

before you know it. The tentative schedule has regular breaks and fellowship time scattered throughout the day and can be accessed at www.york.edu/alumni/events.asp. Everyone who participates will receive a CD we will record on Saturday.

Alumni and Friends Work Days, July 29-31

Last year more than 20 volunteers came to campus at the end of summer for a few days of hard work, great fellowship and service to York College. Again this year, the event will be coordinated by Scott

Eckman (YC ’79). Gurganus Hall will be the special focus of this year’s work days, though crews will work all across campus. Projects will include small repairs and painting, landscaping and campus clean up. Housing and meals are provided by the college for everyone donating their time to help spruce up the campus. If you’re interested in giving a special gift of your hours and energy for YC students, contact Scott at s.eckman@juno.com.
