A Sustainable Servicing Solution

Wastewater from growth in East Gwillimbury and a portion of Newmarket will be conveyed to an innovative sewage treatment plant (Water Reclamation Centre)

Wastewater from growth in Aurora and a portion of Newmarket will be conveyed to the existing York Durham Sewage System (YDSS) for discharge to Lake Ontario

Modifications to existing YDSS include additional forcemainconnecting Newmarket, Aurora and Bogart Creek Pumping Stations

Uses sustainable proven technologies –advanced wastewater purification systems and water reclamation technologies• Reverse osmosis membranes provide high quality phosphorus

reduced water to East Holland River• Nutrient rich water for irrigation and industrial processes

Provides unparalleled treatment levels in Ontario Provides a reliable water source that protects against changes in

rainfall intensity and frequency (climate change) Conserves our water resources Provides an opportunity for education, technology,

knowledge transfer and research within the Lake Simcoe watershed

Working together with the LSRCA, MOE & MNR to meet provincial growth plans while providing opportunities to benefit the Lake Simcoe watershed

Advanced TreatmentDemonstration Facility

Uses secondary effluent from Mount Albert WPCP to demonstrate performance of: Tertiary treatment: Low pressure

membranes (microfiltration) Quaternary treatment: High

pressure membranes (reverse osmosis)

Consistent results following reverse osmosis show phosphorus reduced by 97% -below goal of 0.01 mg/L

Providing design optimization for Water Reclamation Centre

Preliminary long list of 98 potential alternative sites was identified based on mandatory site generation criteria:

• Within the Towns of East Gwillimbury and/or Newmarket

• Greater than 30 ha• Between 218 m and 253 m in

elevation• Less than 5 km away from a

permanent waterbodyLegend

Advantages of Sites 24, 30, WH1 and WH2:

Greater distance from locally significant wetlands

Greater distance from permanent watercourse/water body feature

Avoidance of existing agricultural operationsand/or structures

Suitability for constructionand operation of a Water Reclamation Centre

Access to regional roads Compatibility with future

land uses

WH1 West – Recommended Site(2nd Concession 1 km north of Queensville Sideroad)

Combination of natural features (existing ridge line and trees) and planned landscaping features will eliminate and/or minimize views of proposed Water Reclamation Centre – will not be visible from existing adjacent communities

No displacement of cultural heritage (i.e., heritage houses and farms)

Lower capital, operational and maintenance costs Minimal effects to terrestrial habitat and wildlife and no loss

of aquatic habitat Shorter conveyance infrastructure requires less energy

(measured by Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Footprint)

Modifications to ExistingYork Durham Sewage System (YDSS)

Rationale for modifications: Upgrades to infrastructure required to ensure

wastewater servicing remains reliable and secure to accommodate approved growth

Allow for operational flexibility with integration of existing YDSS with proposed Water Reclamation Centre

Provide backup to existing Newmarket and Bogart Creek Pumping Stations forcemainsduring periods of high flow (e.g. storm events) and during temporary shut down periods for routine maintenance

Required modifications: Modifications to existing Green Lane Trunk

Sewer to direct flows from northwest Newmarket to existing YDSS or Water Reclamation Centre

Additional wastewater conveyance forcemainbetween Newmarket & Aurora Pumping Stations and between Bogart Creek & Aurora Pumping Stations
