As a charity, the YMCA provides vital community services that are having a positive impact on some of Northumberland’s most pressing social issues from chronic disease to unemployment, social isolation, poverty, inequality and more.

Central to our success are:

The people who unite behind our mission and bring their many talents to our work.

• In 2016, 580 YMCA staff and volunteers worked together to strengthen our communities.

• Almost 100 youth were employed by YMCA Northumberland in 2016, making us one of the largest employers of youth in Northumberland County, and providing opportunity for our young people in our communities to gain valuable employment skills and experience.

The safe and welcoming places we provide, from health facilities to classrooms that foster a sense of community.

• With two membership centres, 17 childcare locations, 6 Ontario Early Years Centres, three outdoor pools and three day camp locations, YMCA Northumberland reaches every corner of Northumberland County.

The comprehensive community-based programs that provide the extra skills, self-esteem and confidence building opportunities that many individuals and families need to achieve their full potential.

In 2016:

• 6253 people from across the County were engaged as members at our Health and Aquatics Centres in Cobourg and Brighton, where they improved their health and wellness through inclusive, effective programming

• 854 children were registered in licenced childcare throughout Northumberland County where they grew and developed through our play based learning curriculum

• 500 children and youth developed leadership and problem solving skills while engaging in physical activity and exploring the outdoors at our 3 summer Day Camp locations

• 2608 children participated in YMCA Swim Lessons, with 680 children participating in the Swim to Survive Program, where they learned new skills, challenged themselves, and decreased the likelihood of drownings

• 366 YMCA volunteers gave 13,223 hours of their time.

These three critical resources, People, Places and Programs, come together at the YMCA to create a sense of belonging to a supportive network that has proven time and time again to help our members and program participants achieve their personal development goals, be they physical, mental, social and/or emotional.

For some the impact can be truly transformational and can have an enormous ripple effect on those around them. While we celebrate each of these personal achievements, it is the scale at which this happens that makes Canada’s YMCAs truly unique. Last year we served 2.1 million Canadians in communities from coast to coast. This broad reach and the fact that we’ve been doing this work for more than 160 years are all part of the YMCA’s broader story of how we are building healthy communities.

In closing, on behalf of YMCA Northumberland’s Board of Directors, staff and volunteers we would like to express sincere thanks to Medhat Mahdy, President and Chief Executive Officer of YMCA Greater Toronto and President, YMCA Ontario and John Schmitt, Vice President who worked closely with our Association throughout 2016 during the management agreement to get us to where we are today – a much stronger association with a renewed vision and mission moving forward.

Message from Board Chair and CEO

Once Al decided to get back into the pool, life changed almost immediately. Although Al had enjoyed swimming lessons as a child, he hadn’t swum in years. In January 2015, as part of a plan to manage his muscular sclerosis symptoms, Al decided to give it another try.

He knew he had to do something so the multiple sclerosis would not hold him back from feeling the best he could possibly be. He began to swim, and week after week saw improvements. He quickly surpassed his initial goal to swim 30 minutes, progressing to swimming 100 lengths at a time! Al reflected that “swimming improved how I felt about myself and my abilities. At first, I was exhausted after one length of the pool but slowly became stronger week by week”.

Inspired by the achievements of other members swimming alongside him, Al kept revising and updating his goals. He feels “the YMCA is a place where members motivate each other to be the best possible version of themselves.”

Now, two years later, Al has lost 45lbs, swims 2km daily, has joined the Barracudas Masters Swim Team and completed a performance coaching certificate with honours.

When asked what has kept him going, Al said that he’s motivated to do it for himself. He doesn’t want to look back and regret not doing anything. “We do everything for fear or love – I did this out of fear of what would happen if I didn’t.”

He encourages those looking to get started to figure out what is holding them back so they can deal with it and get started.

Now that Al is sleeping better, feeling stronger and has improved his overall health, he’s ready for the next challenge! With some coaching from YMCA staff, Al recently added strength training three times a week to his program.

Al“The Y is a place where

members motivate each other to be the best version

of themselves.”

After many moves around Ontario for Jason’s work, the William’s family came to Cobourg two years ago with their three boys, Tucker, Benjamin, and Cole. Jason’s new position required him to be on call twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, which made life exciting and unpredictable for this family.

The Williams family had been participants in the Ontario Early Years Program in the community where they previously lived. This experience helped shape their views on the positive outcomes participation can have on a family, and the importance of engaging with the community you live in. After the move, Cathy immediately began attending the Ontario Early Years Programs at the Cobourg YMCA.

While visiting, the family also learned of all the recreational youth and aquatics programs the YMCA has to offer. The boys began participating in YMCA Swim Lessons and many other programs. The cooking program quickly became a favourite. The boys enjoyed the programming and connections, and according to Jason, want to show their parents what they have learned by helping out in the kitchen and making their own breakfast. The family also enjoys playing various

sports at the YMCA, and being active together as a family on the Pentel Playground and Climbing Centre.

Since they arrived in Cobourg, the Williams have welcomed a fourth child, Vivian, to their family, and have developed an even greater appreciation for having a safe place to keep their entire family active and engaged. The Ontario Early Years Centre and the Cobourg YMCA have not only been places for the family to feel engaged, but are key ingredients in developing healthy lifestyles. “The YMCA staff have been so accommodating and have become an extension of our family”, says Cathy. “We are here more than three days a week! With our unpredictable schedule, we go to the YMCA because the staff will help support us in making sure all four kids can make it to all their activities.”

The whole family remains active, engaged and connected to their YMCA. Recently, Cathy has started attending the Learn to Run program to ensure she can continue to keep up with her busy children and to improve her own health.

For the Williams family, the YMCA and the Ontario Early Years Centre have been integral links to their new community, and essential pieces of the healthy, active lifestyle their family enjoys.

After raising three boys in Essa Township and moving around the GTA for work, Judy and Andrew moved to Cobourg where they both began working at St. Peters Anglican Church as ministers.

In 2015, life changed completely for Judy and Andrew when Andrew suffered a brain aneurysm. After five and a half months in the hospital and a successful brain surgery, Andrew was in recovery. The balance centre in Andrew’s brain was damaged by the aneurysm so while his arms and legs were strong, his equilibrium was precarious.

When Andrew returned home from the hospital, he was not able to walk without a walker and someone to support him, and at constant risk of losing his balance.

Before Andrew’s aneurysm, Judy had been working out at the YMCA regularly and hoped there was something that could be done to help Andrew in his recovery. When Andrew got home one of the first things they did was go to the YMCA to find out what programs and services were available. They found not only programs that could play an integral role in Andrew’s rehabilitation, but also support and encouragement from staff and other members that made the daunting road to recovery a bit more manageable.

YMCA staff worked with Judy and Andrew to help them develop an action plan. Working with the guidelines laid out by Andrews health care team, the YMCA was able to set up a program for Andrew as well as one for Judy so she could workout alongside him. Because Andrew still required a spotter, this allowed Judy to keep up with her fitness program while Andrew was working towards his recovery goals. This plan, and support from YMCA staff allowed Andrew and Judy to be active together, and to support each other in working towards their goals.

“Other members at the Y were so encouraging in helping us along and challenging us to take the next step. There was a sense of belonging. At the YMCA, you know you fit and that has always meant a lot to me as someone who is an outsider by nature” says Andrew.

Although Judy and Andrew have recently moved to Oshawa, their involvement with the YMCA continues at the Durham YMCA where they continue to support and encourage each other in pursuit of better health and fitness.

Judy & Andrew

“With the help of the YMCA people started looking at me

as a person. When people look at you that way, you can start to see yourself that way too. I

will always be grateful for that.” -Andrew

This summer will be Isaac’s third year working for YMCA Northumberland. When first starting out in the Summer Day Camp Program, Isaac struggled to settle into the new working environment, but learned the ropes quickly and became a valued member of the day camp team.

Energetic, enthusiastic, creative and sensitive, Isaac has a clear talent for working with people. In YMCA Day Camps, Isaac has worked with people from many cultural and economic backgrounds, of different age and ability, and of different genders and sexualities. When describing this experience, Isaac says, “I was attracted to the Y because it embraces and celebrates diversity. The Y stuck with me even though I had a lot to learn when I first started working here. Now, I can confidently say that I bring something good to the Y team.”

Isaac is non-binary, meaning Isaac does not identify as a male or female, and has felt happy and accepted at the YMCA. Isaac’s pronouns are they and them, as opposed to she/her or he/him.

Isaac has found not only support and acceptance but also appreciation for their creativity and self-expression. Having felt a lack of acceptance and understanding many times throughout their life, Isaac shares their personal experiences with YMCA staff and volunteers in support of a welcoming and inclusive environment for all community members.

Isaac hopes that parents and caregivers “try their best not to hold their children, regardless of age, to old fashioned standards of gender, and let them play and express in whatever way they choose.”

At the YMCA, everyone belongs, and we appreciate all that Isaac does to contribute to maintaining a diverse, inclusive culture.

Isaac“I was attracted to the Y because it embraces and celebrates diversity. The Y stuck with me even though I was making mistakes when I first started working here. Now, I can confidently say that I bring something good to the Y team.”
