TURKISH GREEN CRESCENT SOCIETY

Turkish Green Crescent Society is a nongovernmental organization that, on the premise of human honor and respect, endeavors to protect society and youth from harmful habits without discrimination. Guided by humanitarian values and scientific methods, the Green Crescent fights against tobacco, alcohol, drug, technology, and gambling addictions.

Established in 1920 and given the status of Public-Beneficial Society by the Turkish government in 1934, the Green Crescent has become a trademark in prevention and rehabilitation with more than 100 branches and hundreds of thousands of volunteers throughout Turkey. Moreover, it has been awarded with the consultative status by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for its valuable works in Turkey and in Global. Turkish Green Crescent collaborates with the Vienna NGO Committee on Drugs, which is also a member of it, and cooperates with the United Nation Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in order to maintain the vision of fighting against addictions in global. Furthermore, as a result of its professional work, the Green Crescent is the regional representative for Eastern Europe and Central Asia of the UN Vienna Civil Society Task Force (CSTF).

INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF GREEN CRESCENTS

With its experiences and vision, Turkish Green Crescent pioneered the establishment of International Federation of Green Crescents (IFGC) in 2016, as one of the largest umbrella organization in the fight against addictions by gathering independent Country Green Crescents around the world.

With mutual cooperation and coordination among its members at the highest level, the Federation operates all over the world, particularly in the countries where the members are located. It sets in motion the awareness, strength and resources of communities in order to fight against addictions in the international arena. It provides assistance to people who are in need, in line with the protection of human pride and respectability, under all circumstances, at all times and in all places. As an independent organization it contributes continuously to the development of the capacity of communities in the fight against addictions.

THE FUNDAMENTAL VALUES AND PRINCIPLES OF THE FEDERATION

• The Fight Against Addiction for Human Dignity: The aim of the Federation is the protection of human health against addictions and ensuring that human dignity is respected.

• Non-discrimination: The Federation does not allow discrimination in its services.

• Independence: The Federation is an independent organization and is subject to international agreements, norms and practices.

• Charity: The Federation is a voluntary charity organization, which does not seek any personal or organizational profit in its services in any way.

• Public Health: The Federation is a voluntary non-governmental organization, which establishes preventative and rehabilitative programs to fight against all types of addictions.

• Scientific Approach: The Federation embraces the approach of evidence-based research in its activities.

• Global View: The Federation adopts the principles of establishing a global organization in the fight against addictions, tries to solve problems, and possesses a good global reputation.

• Sense of Community: To ensure long lasting success, the Federation organizes and engages in participatory work at the community level.

GLOBAL MODELS AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR COUNTRY GREEN CRESCENTSTurkish Green Crescent provides generous support to Country Green Crescents to improve their capacity and also has several projects that are implementable in other countries.

CAPACITY BUILDING PROGRAMCapacity Building Program is designed for Country Green Crescents in order to support their institutionalization process and increase their capacity to fight against addictions. Capacity Building Program aimed to increase the Country Green Crescent’s capacity by including significant topics in the training program such as fight against addiction, campaign management, advocacy, and corporate communication. This program also intended to secure their future works’ productivity and sustainability.

ADDICTION PREVENTION TRAINING PROGRAM OF TURKEY (TBM)

TBM aims to raise awareness of addiction among young generation with the intent of supporting children and youngsters. Targeting students first, TBM is also designed to reach the whole society with its specialized contents and materials for all age groups. With the integration of TBM into the National Education System, thousands of school counselors have been trained as TBM trainers, thereby these trainers could reach millions of students and parents. In order to ensure a safer and healthier life for children and young people, it is very important to widespread TBM in other countries and it can be revised in line with the requirements of the relevant countries.

GREEN CRESCENT CONSULTANCY CENTER (YEDAM)YEDAM provides free psychological consultation and rehabilitation support to addicts and their acquaintances with call center services and service buildings in Istanbul and several other cities in Turkey. During the rehabilitation process, the individuals get also a professional training in YEDAM Workshop centers. The main purpose of YEDAM Workshop is to reintegrate the target group to the society. YEDAM has proven that it is an effective consulting model since it was established. This successful model will be initiated in Northern Cyprus in the near future.

INTERNATIONAL FINANCIAL SUPPORT PROGRAM (UMDP)

International Financial Support Program is established to conduct more effective works against addictions on a global scale, together with other Green Crescents that are active in various regions of the world.

The purpose of the International Financial Support Program is to further develop the corporate capacities of Country Green Crescent organizations so as to ensure that they play more effective roles in the fight against addictions, and to equip them by adequate means so as to make them capable of conducting high level works in different scales. Since 2016, more than 370 thousand Dollars has been provided to approximately 37 Country Green Crescents.

MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

The Mentorship Program is a year-long, voluntary platform for Country Green Crescent staff members to develop supportive relationships. We pair new Country Green Crescents in the International Federation of Green Crescents (IFGC) with experienced Green Crescents who have similar goals and interests. Mentees work with a mentor on creating a plan for reaching their developmental goals, that outlines specific objectives and actions. It is an excellent opportunity to receive advice on specific projects or activities and ultimately build a stronger connection to one’s specialised area.
