I T’S hard not to notice them — all those seemingly homeless men andwomen trudging down

the city streets, lugging plastic bags full of bottles and cans. Most of us look the other way.

Manfred Kirchheimer didn’t. Instead, the 86yearold director focused his camera on them, resulting in a provocative, sometimes beautiful film called “Canners,” opening Friday at the Metrograph theater.

Curious about the peoplehe saw hunting for cans on his Upper West Side block, Kirchheimer began by sticking out his hand and saying hello.

“When you have a handshake, it is hard not to respond, and they did,” he tells The Post. “My age helped, and they immediately trusted me.”

Over the course of a year, he got to know his subjects.

“Part of my goal was to humanize them,” says Kirchheimer, whose docu

mentaries were the subject of a recent MoMA retrospective. “These are hardworking people who often get up at 4 in the morning, come to Manhattan to gather cans and must hit the redemption center by 6 that evening. And they have lives outside of this.”

One of his subjects has a job driving the sick to hospitals; another is a musician who’s performed on cruise ships, gives free piano lessons to neighborhood kids, and spends his can money on lottery tickets.

The people he speaks toalso discuss their dreams. One talks about moving to Florida and cruising around on a Vespa, while another considers returning to college for a degree. Kirchheimer doubts either will happen.

Nevertheless, he notes acertain amount of entre

preneurship among his subjects, whom he suspects prefer to be their
