We use the verb to be (am / is / are) to make yes / no questions that don´t have an action verb. We make this type of question when we want to know about facts / reality.
Are you married?
Yes, I am.
Is he your brother?
No, he isn´t. = No, he is not.
Is she an artist?
Yes, she is.
• Subjective pronoun
– I – You– He– She– It– We– You – They
• Verb to be
– am– are– is– is– is– are– are– are
When we form the a question the verb to be, we need to invert the order of the subject of the sentence with the verb to be:
Affirmative: He is from Brasilia.
Yes/no question: Is he from Brasilia?
Short answer:Yes, he is. / No, he isn´t
Complete answer: Yes. He is from Brasilia
Formula – Yes/No Questions with the verb to be:
Verb to be + Subject + complement?
Is Paul your friend? Are you American? Is your sister married?
Can you make some yes /no questions with the words below?
Example: Is she your sister?
singlemarried
From Brasilia
A dentist

Your friend

You

When we have an action verb, we need a ¨helper¨ (an auxiliary verb) to form the question – DO/DOES
Do you play soccer?
Yes, I do.
Do they speak French?
No, they don´t. = No, they do not.
Does she drive to work?
Yes, she does.
Does he travel a lot?
No, he doesn´t. = No, he does not.
Remember that when forming a question with the 3rd person singular (he/she/it) we use
DOES, and the action verb goes back to its base form:
He travels every week. (the verb ¨to travel¨ is conjugated)
Does he travel every week? (the verb travel is now in his base form – the infinitive without the ¨to¨)
Let´s remember the conjugation of verbs in English:
• I travel study play• You travel study play• he/she/it travels studies plays• We travel study play• You travel study play• They travel study play
Formula – Yes/No Questions with an action verb:
Do / Does+ Subject + action verb + complement?
Does Paul play the guitar? Do you like chocolate? Does your sister work at IBM?
When we form a question with an action verb, we have to place the helper , the auxiliary verb DO / DOES in the beginning of the question and, and when it is a question in the 3rd person singular, the action verb goes back to its base form (infinitive minus ¨to¨)
Affirmative: I like chocolate. / He likes chocoloate.
Yes/no question: Do you like chocolate? / Does he like chocolate?
Short answer:Yes, I do. or No, I don´t / Yes, he does. Or No, he doesn´t = No, I do not. = No, he does not
