Growing up in Washington D.C., Carlton was a shy young boy who was picked on by his peers because of a severe eczema condition. This teasing led him to look up to strong, tough role models such as NFL players and Marvel superheroes. One Sunday, Carlton was called out by the pastor. “Do you do drugs?” she asked. “No,” he lied. “Do you know people who do drugs or have been in rehabs?” she pressed further. “Maybe,” Carlton said. “Well, the Lord gave me a word for you,” she said. “I don’t know how and I don’t know when, but the Lord is going to call you to help those struggling with drugs and alcohol in a mission type setting. You are going to be used to build up His kingdom.” Five years later, a minister Carlton had met while in rehab told him he had a place for him. He drove Carlton to the Frederick Rescue Mission. The first weeks at the Mission made an impression on Carlton; he saw men who were actually successful in their recovery. That pivotal moment spurred on his recovery at the Mission. After a year, he completed the Changed Life Recovery Program. The Frederick Rescue Mission is a Christ-centered ministry providing residential recovery programs to the homeless or chemically addicted, food to the hungry, clothing and furniture to the needy, and connection to our community through relationships. The Mission’s purpose is not to be just a charity or a non-profit but to be a ministry showing Christ’s love.

While the Mission is a Christ-centered ministry, the Frederick Rescue Mission is not a church. Over 80 churches support the Mission. Our aim is to help the church show Christ to the community. There are many ways “the church is the church” at the Mission. Everyday there are at least 500 people that come to the Mission for food, clothes, victory over addiction, or encouragement; everyday there are people from churches bringing food, teaching the Bible and the gospel, serving groceries and food, giving financially or volunteering their time and talent. The good news that God can change lives right now, regardless of how bleak things may be, can be easily seen and heard. We would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to the churches that partner with the Mission!

Church was not a part of my upbringing. I came to know Christ during my rebellious late teen years. Shortly afterward, a guy

named Steve discipled me and took me to a large church, full of highly respectable and nicely dressed people. I felt totally out of place. Yet, I will never forget when Steve told my story and introduced me to the pastor. Pastor Putnam warmly responded, “Welcome to the family of God!” Over the next seven months, he met with me almost every week, teaching me about Jesus and His Word. My life was changed forever!

It is my hope whenever people come on the campus at the Mission or Faith House that they will experience the family of God welcoming them and offering help and hope. If we are to see lives changed now and for eternity, we must have the prayer and support of churches.

Paul wrote from jail to the church at Philippi, “I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 1:4-6) To the churches that support the Frederick Rescue Mission – thank you for your partnership in the gospel!

living tributes

Every few months, the Mission highlights five churches out of over 80 who partner with us to change lives now and for eternity. As the community of faith gives each day to exercise their gifts, lives are being touched by the good news of

Christ! We are grateful to have relationships with each church, and we honor the work they are doing in the name of Jesus at the Mission!

BROOK HILL UNITED METHODIST CHURCH has been a financial partner of the Mission for over 20 years! Each year they bring a group to lead a water station at the Mission 10 Miler, handing out water to passing runners. In addition, their outreach pastor, Gary Hicks, serves on the Mission’s Ministry at the Tables team, serving and caring for those in the Mission cafeteria.

CEDARBROOK COMMUNITY CHURCH has supported the Mission for the past two years by serving lunch on the second Tuesday of every month. They are also a blessing to us as a monthly financial partner and host of a clothing donation box, supporting our Rescued Treasures clothing program.

EL SHADDAI CONGREGATION has sponsored a table at the Mission’s annual fundraising banquet since 2013. We are very grateful for their financial partnership as faithful monthly supporters over the last three years.

NEW DIMENSIONS WORSHIP CENTER gives up their Saturday morning once a month to bring a team to serve breakfast from 6 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. They have provided this service reliably to the Mission for the past four years!

St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church is known for bringing and serving their famous steak dinner to our Changed Life Recovery Program residents on the third Saturday of each month. They have also financially supported the Mission by giving to our programs and services for over 20 years!

support to those struggling with addiction at the local penitentiary, the Mission and the hospital. During the last four years, Carlton has served as the Frederick County peer recovery specialist at Frederick Memorial Hospital during the day and as the Mission’s evening residential manager.

When the role of Changed Life Recovery Program director became available last year, Carlton remembered the word spoken over him 20 years ago -- that he would be serving those struggling with addiction in a mission type setting. The calling had come.

“I never let the Mission go,” he said. “This is home for me; this is where everything started for me.”

Carlton serves as the new director of the Changed Life Recovery Program. We are so thankful for the work God has done in his life, and what will be accomplished in the days to come!
