CATCHING UP WITH KEVIN DAVIS
It has been a busy threeyears for Kevin Davis sincebeing selected as the
Conservative Prospective MPfor Yeovil. Kevin said: “I havebeen hearing from familiesabout the real struggles theyhave faced due to GordonBrown's recession, but I amalso hearing about how Yeovilis the forgotten part ofSomerset and the area hassuffered from under investmentin all aspects. Many peoplehave put this down to the factthat the current Lib Dem MPhas no power and influence onthe Government."
Kevin has started manycampaigns across the areafrom reducing car parkingcharges in Chard andCrewkerne, opening new toiletsin Yeovil and helping preservegreen spaces. He alsopassionately believes that moreneeds to be done to sort out
the dangerous A303 that is themajor artery passing throughthe centre of Somerset. Kevinis supporting the Royal BritishLegion in their campaign to domore for forces families duringthis incredibly difficult time ofwar.
Kevin has been visiting manyof the major employers in thearea such as Yeovil College, schools, Yeovil hospital, AgustaWestland helicopters, the AbbeyManor Group as well as manyof the small and medium sizebusinesses that make Yeoviland South Somerset a greatplace to live.
“I believe Yeovil is wellplaced to emerge strongly fromthis recession. A strong publicsector and an entrepreneurialbusiness sector is what willmake the difference but it willalso need the right Governmentto help Yeovil thrive.”

What are the challenges facingYeovil? We need to ensure that Labour'srecession does not affect Yeoviltoo heavily. All except GordonBrown seem to know that cuts topublic services are coming. Weneed to make a strong case forfuture spending in Yeovil.
What do you believe can be doneto make the case for Yeovil? The Labour Government does notcare about Yeovil but aConservative MP with aConservative Government couldmake a real difference. I am surethe current Lib Dem MP is a niceman but he does not have anyinfluence. We need a strong voicein Westminster that theGovernment will listen to.
What about local issues?Transport, business and thehealth service are major issues -the irregular train service, theneed for helicopter orders andmoney for the health service. Weneed to move from words toaction and although the currentMP talks about these issues hislack of influence means nothinghappens.
What challenges have you facedthis year? The recession has hit my family. We had hoped to have a newhome in the constituency by nowbut the Labour recession hasmeant my house has remainedunsold. I am committed to havinga home in Yeovil but it has been avery frustrating time for my wifeand our four children.

IMPROVING OURNHS FOR EVERYONEA Conservative Government would increase spending on the NHS – andmake sure the money reaches the front line where it’s needed most.
Our National Health Service is afantastic institution – there forall of us when we need it,
regardless of our background or ourability to pay. That’s why theConservative Party has made the NHSits number one priority and promisedto improve it for everyone.
But there are huge challenges facingthe NHS in the years ahead, say theTories. Britain’s population is growingand getting older, and new advances intreatment often prove expensive.
That’s why, even as the countrystruggles to pay down Gordon Brown’sdebts, the Conservatives have promisedto protect the NHS with real termsincreases in spending – a promise
Labour have refused to match.
Too much wasteBut it’s not just a question of throwingmore money at the Health Service – thelast 12 years have shown that’s notenough. Reform is needed too. Sincethey came to power in 1997, Labourhave almost tripled spending on theNHS. Yet much of the additional
4 EXCLUSIVE
funding has been eatenup in waste andbureaucracy andpatient care has notimproved as it shouldhave done.
‘Much of the wastehas occurred becauseLabour have beenobsessed withmicromanaging our healthservice,’ says the ConservativeShadow Health Secretary, AndrewLansley. ‘Instead of trusting doctorsand nurses to do what they do best,Labour have made it more difficult forthem to do their job as a result of theirbox-ticking and paperwork.
‘This has meant the NHS has notbeen able to focus on what reallymatters – providing world-class
healthcare to every patient in thiscountry.’
To achieve that goal and close thegap between the UK and othercountries on things like cancer survivalrates, says Lansley, taxpayers’ moneyhas to get where it’s needed most: to ourdoctors and nurses on the front line.
And patients should have more sayover the treatment they receive – aConservative Government would letthem choose their GP, their hospital andeven the consultant responsible for theirhealthcare.
‘Only the Conservatives have thereform programme that the NHSneeds,’ he says. ‘By trustingprofessionals and putting patient choiceat the heart of the NHS, we will deliverthe change we need.’

Helping people in care keep theirfamily home
The Conservative commitment to the NHSDavid Cameron’s party has promised to:make sure the NHS focuses on the results of your treatment, not box-ticking and targets.
put patients in the driving seat – you will have the right tochoose your GP, your hospital and even the consultant responsible for your care.
stop the spread of hospital infections and end the scandal ofmixed-sex wards – by building 45,000 more single rooms in the NHS.
give you the option of paying a flat fee on retirement so all your costs will be covered if you have to go into a care home in the future.
reform the way the NHS pays pharmaceuticalcompanies for drugs so that all effective newdrugs and treatments are available on the NHS.
restore access to an NHS dentist to amillion people and reintroduce dentalchecks for school children.
• Each year, around45,000 elderly peopleare forced to sell theirhome to pay forresidential care fees.
• Conservatives wouldgive people the option ofpaying a one-off fee onretirement, in return forwhich all their fees wouldbe waived – for life.
• People already over 65would also be able totake advantage of thescheme.

Kevin Davis has been running asurvey across the constituency.
Top priorities for residents include anti-social behaviour, the level of CouncilTax, transport and preventing the lossof green spaces. Big issues for thecountry are the economy, immigrationand the lack of faith in politicians.Areas where there should be no publicspending cuts are defence, the NHS,Schools and the Police.
Kevin said: “These surveys help metake decisions about where I shouldbe campaigning. A good example isthe recently started campaign to make
the A303 a safer road. ”Kevin admits that getting new moneyfor the A303 is going to be verydifficult but he believes there is a realopportunity if the right pressure is
bought to bear and we get a newGovernment. You can see more on thiscampaign by visiting the 'Free the 303'website at www.a303.org.uk

The scandal of MPs expenses is adisgrace. Even the current Lib DemMP for Yeovil has claimed for hishousehold grocery bills. As theformer Independent sleaze-bustingMP Martin Bell said recently, " Icould not bring myself to vote forMPs who expect the taxpayers totake care of their grocery bills".
I make ten pledges that as your MP I will:
• publish in detail, online, allexpenses claimed
• open up the unedited expensesclaims to local newspapers
• never claim for household food, furniture or household goods
• put the interests of Yeovil above myown or my Party’s
• have a home in the constituency
• serve all my constituents, regardlessof their politics
• never promise what I cannot deliver
• never claim credit for somethingwhen the credit is not mine
• act with honesty, integrity andopenness at all times
• tell people my real views, even ifthey may disagree with me

Kevin makes pledges to you
Everyone’s talking about thedebt crisis. What are you goingto do about it?
Let’s be clear. This country is sitting on amountain of debt and we cannot ignore it. Ifwe do, we’ll be left with higher taxes andhigher interest rates – and could easily slipback into recession. That’s why theConservative Party has been honest aboutthe needfor spending cuts. The real question iswhere those cuts should come. Thereare some easy choices here – likegetting rid of ID cards – but there aremore difficult choices to make too, andwe’ve started to set them out. So, forexample, we will freeze public sectorpay for all but the one million lowestpaidpublic sector workers for one yearto help protect jobs.
Does that mean you’ll cutfrontline services? No. We’re making these cuts now –to government waste, bureaucracy andthose luxuries we cannot afford – sothat we can protect frontline servicesnow and for the future. In fact we havemade a commitment to ring-fencingspending on the NHS because webelieve nothing is more important. We’re all in this together and bringingdown our debt must not mean pushingdown the poor and vulnerable whodepend on these services. We’re all in thistogether and bringingdown our debt must not mean pushing
down the poor and vulnerable whodepend on these services.
Boris has made real progressfor Londoners in tacklingcrime on public transport. Howwould a ConservativeGovernment help to tackle theworrying issue of crime andanti-social behaviour?Boris has shown the difference thatnew leadership can make. From thevery start of a ConservativeGovernment we will send out thestrongest signals that if someonecommits a crime, they will get caughtand they’ll be punished properly. Theywill get caught because we’re going tofree the police from all those targetsthat waste their time so they can get
out on the streets. And they will bepunished properly because we willoverhaul sentencing so that offendersserve their full time in prison. But wealso understand that we’ll only ever getto grips with crime if we confront itscauses too. That means strengtheningfamilies, reforming schools and gettingpeople back into work.
With the economic crisisdominating the politicalagenda will you be puttingenvironmental issues on thebackburner?Absolutely not. I don’t see it as achoice between green issues oreconomic growth – it’s about both. Ifwe ignore the planet now, we’ll paylater. Floods will bring devastationwhich we’ll have to repair at greatexpense. With the age of cheap oilcoming to an end, unless we cleanersources of energy we’ll all be paying ahigh price at the petrol pumps for yearsto come. And above all, there will be amulti-trillion pound global market forgreen goods in the years to come. Toget a slice of that pie – and the jobs thatcome with it – then Britain has to startinvesting in new green technologiesand industries today, not tomorrow.Absolutely not. I don’t see it as achoice between green issues oreconomic growth – it’s about both. Ifwe ignore the planet now, we’ll paylater. Floods will bring devastation
The next general election will be the most important one for a generation. Thecountry is crying out for change – change that DAVID CAMERON says the Conservative Party can deliver.
