Once there was, once there wasn’t…
Video, DVD, 2007, 5 min. As human beings, we all question the secret of life and the reasons we are alive; this questioning gave birth to mythology, religions, science, philosophy and art. Answers to many questions were searched for using these disciplines… In every historical period, in every society, be it through science or through faith, similar or different opinions produced different answers to the existential questions. We learn and instinctively feel that everything I the universe runs into everything else, that shapes repeat themselves by different means, the big bang theory, the reflection of the macrocosmos in the microcosmos, parallel universes, that life began in the water… Whether we are aware of it or not, the secret is whispered into our ears from our childhood until now: “Once upon a time…”

Video 5. DVD ,2’45’’ 2006In March 2006, the Dutch conculate of İstanbul informed me via a latter in Dutch that my application for a tourist’s visa had been refused. That text written in Dutch represents the isolation not only of my own Turkish,Artist,Male,Muslim, etc self but also of the political, social, etc. İsolation of the geography I live in.I read this text in front of the wall of the consulate’s bulding with Turkish phonetics as I would have read a text in Turkish. The result is a cacaphony which makes no sense either in Dutch or in Turkish.

(...) From this point of wiew, “Whithout” is from the outset a positive exposition. It brings together near to forty young artists using disciplines ranging from sculpture to photography, video to insallations and aiming to question the limits separating Me from You, Us from Them. How profoundly this problem was investigated can be put into question, moreover it is difficult to find a consistent line of thought or to get a feeling of completeness in the generally scattered atmosphere of the expositon. A few of the works which have stuck in my memory are:Onur Serdar’s satire of the EU question in “Let’s Drink to the EU”, Beste Erener’s reflections on the consequences and meaning of war in our day, Başak Doğan’s installations investigating the close/far relationship between art and the theory of art, and “Camera Obscura” by Yener Pınarbaş, approaching the interest that artists have in photography in an almost ironical way.
