Welcome to all the parents/guardians of our Year 3 & 4 students. We have compiled this information booklet for you to refer to regarding content, procedures and expectations.

Middle Primary is an exciting and dynamic stage of your child’s learning journey. Through-out these years, children continue to develop their academic potential. They are required to make wise decisions and choices and to put their faith into action. We as teachers are ex-cited about the year that is before us, and trust our loving Father will equip all of us with the wisdom and skills we need to succeed.

Our vision is to provide a program that is meaningful, purposeful, fun and engaging. We expect our children to be fully motivated, challenged and immersed in their learning. We are also passionate about our students moving progressively upward along a continuum, being able to reflect upon their own performance and to extend them on their learning journey. Our heart is for the children to become independent, passionate and lifelong learners.

We trust that this booklet will answer many of your questions. In the event of any further que-ries, please feel free to contact your child’s teachers via diary, email or appointment.

Class CoordinatorsEach class has a class coordinator that is invited into this position to assist the classroom teacher with building friendships between the parents and students of their class. Events are scheduled for fun and fellowship. The classroom coordinator also assists the teacher in or-ganizing some College events.

In Year 3 and 4 it is expected that children will obey the school rules and class rules. They will wear the correct uniform at all times and conduct themselves sensibly and responsibly. They must speak respectfully to teachers, parents, friends and visitors.

We are promoting a supportive, fun and creative learning environment. Our aim is to cater for individual needs and learning styles through a variety of activities.

Some of our main goals as Grade 3 and 4 teachers are:• To teach from a Christian worldview and encourage the students to respond in a Christian

Arrivals & DeparturesReport to the UPS receptionist for a late slip if your child is late and arrives after 8.30am. Please ensure that your child is punctual each day. When you collect your child during the school day, proceed to the UPS office, inform the receptionist and collect an early departure slip. The receptionist will inform the class teacher and your child will then meet you at the office.

Personal BelongingsName all clothing and possessions brought to the College eg: all uni-form items, hats, socks, shoes, lunch boxes, drink bottles, school bags, pencil cases, pencils, jumpers, swim-mers, towels, goggles, etc.

General Information

Upper Primary Office HoursThe UPS office hours are from 8am to 4pm. Enquiries outside these hours can be made at the Main Administration office from 8am to 5pm.

AbsenteeismIf a student will not be attending school on any given day, please phone the school office and advise staff. The school office will automatically send out a text to notify you if your child has been marked absent for the day if the office has not been informed. The following day a short note in your child’s diary is required.

PunctualityThe College day starts at 8:30am. If a student is late they must report to Mrs Wendy Fairburn’s office and receive a late note, which they present to their teacher without disturbing the class. The teacher records relevant information and attaches the slip to the student’s diary for your information.

ChaplainAppointments can be made through the school office for students and parents to visit the Primary School Chaplain.

TuckshopOur College offers students an efficient lunch ordering system. Lunch orders can be made two ways:

• Online at www.metrocanteens.com.au or

• Written on the outside of a paper bag with money inserted into the bag. Each morning the tuck-shop orders from each classroom are collected.

Orders are filled and then returned at lunchtime. This service saves time and students do not spend their lunchtime lining up to purchase their lunch.

Birthday Cakes & AllergiesAt school we celebrate birthdays, however, we request that it be kept simple. Cupcakes or individual pieces of cake that are separately packaged would be suitable. For safety reasons, staff do not have access to knives for cake cutting in the classroom. In keeping with our Health Policy, please be aware that some students have certain food allergies. We also ask that you avoid sending any foods that contain nuts.

General Information

StationeryStudents are supplied with student packs at the beginning of Term 1; however, during the year they tend to misplace or go through items like pencils, sharpeners and rubbers. It would be appreciated if you can keep a check on these items and provide extras when necessary. Please label these materials for your child.

We ask that school books are covered at the beginning of the year as it tends to make the students take ownership and pride in them and gives the books a little more protec-tion throughout the year.

We would also ask that each student supply a large box of tissues and wet wipes.

AssessmentStudents will be given adequate notice of any piece of as-sessment due. Specific guidelines, assistance and time-lines are given to the students to enable sufficient time to complete projects by themselves. Class time will be al-located for some project work. Teachers will notify what work (if any) will need to be completed at home. Assess-ment of projects and presentations will be recorded on a criteria sheet, recording the level of achievement and the areas of concern, improvement and a general comment in relation to their work. Results re-corded from tests, bookwork and class work will be collated to produce a semester grading. Attitudes, aptitude and effort will be important criteria in the evaluation process. Checklists and anecdotal records are compiled by the class teacher regarding student’s progress and will determine where learning assistance or extension is needed.

ClubtasticsClubs are held on a Tuesday afternoon in Terms 1 and 3. A form will come home notifying you about the range of activities available and how to nominate for preferred activities. This is an opportunity for your child to participate in an area of personal interest beyond the regular school curriculum.

General Information

Primary Colours Award SchemeBy recognising students’ diligence, perseverance, faithfulness and dedication the awards play an important role in encouraging and promoting a desire within the student body to become a representative of our college. Primary colours are awarded for academic, cultural and sporting achievements and are made up of four levels.

White: a representative of the school at district level with a minimum requirement of 75% attendance at any training or practice sessions.Teal: student has represented the District at a Regional levelRed: student has represented the Region at a State LevelGold: student has represented at a National level

The badge

A cloth badge and certificate will be presented to the awardees at a special chapel service. These services are held once a term. The badge is to be worn on the right hand side of the day uniform below the collar.

Camps and Excursions

Year 3 students will participate in an overnight camp on the school grounds in Term 3. Parents are encouraged to join us and stay the night to assist with activities.

Year 4 students will experience a two night camp at Tallebudgera Recreational Centre this year.

The costs are covered in the school fees/consumables.

Our excursions during the year will be published in the term newsletter and information will go home advising you about the details.

Mobile PhonesPrimary children are not to bring mobile phones to school. The only exception to this rule is if parents contact Mr Welsh or Mr Nicholson (via letter to your classroom teacher) and an arrangement is made due to special circumstances. In this situation the phone will be given to the classroom teacher to look after during the day and the students will be responsible to collect it before leaving at the end of the school day.

General Information

Sunscreen PolicyOur policy aims at ensuring that all children attending KING’S CHRISTIAN COLLEGE are protected from the harmful effects of the sun throughout the year.

Strategies:• Parents are encouraged to apply sunscreen on their child as part of the morning proce- dure at home.• Sunscreen (30+) is available in all classrooms.• Children will be instructed on correct sunscreen application and use when needed.• Upon parental request, children with sensitive skin are to supply their own sunscreen.• Hats are to be worn at all times whilst outdoors. Staff/Adults are encouraged to model the corresponding behaviour and wear hats too.• Staff will enforce a “No Hat, No Play” rule. Children are to be in the allocated, shaded area when no hat is available.• Children are encouraged to seek frequent drinks from bubblers or their drink bottles when outdoors.

It ensures that all gifts and talents are catered for and linked to the Australian Curriculum. The program runs alongside what is being taught in the classroom, allowing for early identification and enabling input from everyone involved.

The Years 3-4 programIn-class interactive ibooks are designed around the Grade curriculum, using a blend of extension strategies from William, Maker and Bloom. Each ibook is a project that is strategi-cally sequenced to broaden and enrich the thinking of students. Ibooks include images, clips and websites that expose students to the necessary content, as well as instruction. There are small activities that lead up to a culminating task, which illustrates what students have learnt. Along the way students ‘build’ their vocabulary on the theme and at the completion of the book they do a self-reflection and have a peer reflect upon their learning practice.

Curriculum

EnglishThe English curriculum is built around the three interrelated strands of Language, Literature and Literacy. Teaching and learning programs should balance and integrate all three strands. Together the strands focus on developing students’ knowledge, understanding and skills in listening, reading, viewing, speaking, writing and creating.

Learning in English builds on concepts, skills and processes developed in earlier years, and teachers will revisit and strengthen these as needed.

Each day there is a rotational ‘Love of Literacy’ block allocated to the explicit teaching, learn-ing and extending of student’s literacy skills. This time will include:

Reading – Guided Reading Instructional language, literature and literacy groups, buddy reading, read to self, literacy circles and iPad reading and research. Drop Everything and Read (DEAR), daily silent, independent reading.

Grammar – Formal teaching. This will develop oral expression, sentence structure and writing. Children are presented with grammatical learning that is relevant and directly related to their experiences and the current genre study.

Writing – Children are involved in daily writing tasks within a comprehensive range of gen-res (journal, letter, persuasive, narrative, procedure, explanation).

Spelling – King’s Christian College has adopted the ‘Spelling Mastery’ Program. We will continue with the direct teaching of spelling in Years 3 and 4. Whilst learning of spelling words is during lesson time, we would like to encourage parents to help your child revise new vocabulary.

Viewing – Students are immersed in visual stimuli to extend their creativity. Lessons in class will promote skills in deciphering and analysis of this material through visual literacy lessons.

Speaking – Students are involved in daily interaction and discussion with fellow students. Students also present impromptu and prepared oral tasks (e.g. project presentation, conduct-ing a science experiment in front of the class, sharing work).

Curriculum

HistoryThe History program is based on the Australian History Curriculum provided by ACARA (that is the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority.)

The Year 3 curriculum provides a study of identity and diversity in both a local and broader context. Moving from the heritage of their local area, students explore the historical features and diversity of their community as represented in symbols and emblems of signifi-cance, and celebrations and commemorations, both locally and in other places around the world.

The Year 4 curriculum introduces world history and the movement of peoples. Beginning with the history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, students examine European exploration and colonisation in Australia and throughout the world up to the early 1800s. Students examine the impact of exploration on other societies, how these societies interacted with newcomers, and how these experiences contributed to their cultural diversity.

The content provides opportunities to develop historical understanding through key concepts including sources, continuity and change, cause and effect, perspectives, empathy and significance.

These concepts may be investigated within a particular historical context to facilitate an un-derstanding of the past and to provide a focus for historical inquiries.

The Australian History Curriculum consists of two major concept areas:

• Historical Knowledge and Understanding

• Historical Skills

MathematicsStudents will spend approximately 5 hours per week on Mathematics. This will involve direct teaching, problem solving skills, hands on work and independent extension or remedial work. This year students will be streamed accord-ing to their ability across classes, which include an exten-sion group. This way staff can cater explicitly for your child’s needs.

Please note, the Mathematics program is based on the Australian Mathematics Curriculum provided by ACARA, that is the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority.

The Australian Curriculum: Mathematics aims to ensure that students:• are confident, creative users and communicators of Mathematics, able to investigate, rep-

resent and interpret situations in their personal and work lives and as active citizens• develop an increasingly sophisticated understanding of mathematical concepts and flu-

ency with processes and are able to pose and solve problems and reason in Number and

The Australian Mathematics Curriculum consists of 3 major concept areas:

Number and Algebra, which encompasses number and place value, fractions and deci-mals, money and financial matters, patterns and algebra

Measurement and Geometry that involves using units of measurement, shapes, location and transformations and geometric reasoning

Statistics and Probability that covers chance and data representation and interpretation

GeographyGeography is a structured way of exploring, ana-lysing and understanding the characteristics of the places that make up our world, using the con-cepts of place, space, environment, interconnec-tion, sustainability, scale and change. It addresses scales from the personal to the global and time periods from a few years to thousands of years.

The Geography program for Year 3 and 4 is based on the Australian Geography Curriculum provided by ACARA (that is the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority.) Geography is organised in two related strands:

• Geographical Knowledge and Understanding

• Geographical Inquiry and Skills

A framework for developing students’ geographical knowledge, understanding and skills is provided through the inclusion of inquiry questions and specific inquiry skills, including the use and interpretation of maps, photographs and other representations of geographical data.

The key inquiry questions for Year 3 are articulated below.• How and why are places similar and different?• What would it be like to live in a neighbouring country?• How do people’s feelings about places influence their views about the protection of

places?

The key inquiry questions for Year 4 are articulated below.• How does the environment support the lives of people and other living things?• How do different views about the environment influence approaches to sustainability?• How can people use places and environments more sustainably?

ScienceThe Science program is based on the Australian Science Curriculum provided by ACARA (that is the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority.)

The Australian Curriculum: Science aims to ensure:

Students develop an interest in science as a means of expanding their curiosity and willing-ness to explore, ask questions about and speculate on the changing world in which they live. Students can describe how they use scientific inquiry methods to respond to questions and identify the ways people use science in their lives. They collect and present data in a way that helps to answer their questions and use their experiences to make predictions and form hypothesis. Students describe features common to living things. They establish a solid foun-dation of knowledge of the biological, chemical, physical, Earth and space sciences.

The Australian Science Curriculum consists of 3 major concept areas:

• Science Understanding

• Science as a Human Endeavour

• Science Inquiry Skills

The topics that will be covered throughout the year will be:

• Biology: The lifecycles of plants and animals.

• Chemistry: The properties of natural and processed materials.

• Earth & Space: The changes to the Earth’s surface through natural processes and hu-man activity.

• Physical sciences: The forces exerted by one object on another.

Curriculum

MusicMr. Simon Reddrop is our music teacher and brings with him an enthusiasm and passion for music. His desire is to foster a love and appreciation for music in each of the students. Specialist classes will incorporate both voice and instrumental experiences. He will take each class for one lesson per week on: Thursday for Year 3 students and Tuesday for Year 4 stu-dents.

Information TechnologyIn Year 3 and 4 Mrs Judy Clark will be teaching students computer skills focusing on re-search, presentation and using the internet effectively. Students will also be integrating iPads in their classroom activities.

ArtStudents will have opportunities to create art through their Integrated Studies Program. They will learn basic principles and techniques using a range of mediums.

Instrumental MusicKing’s Christian College has a vibrant and dynamic Instrumental Music program. Lessons are conducted during the school day and ensemble opportunities are available for Strings and Band instruments out of school hours.

Lessons are available for all instruments – strings, brass, woodwind, percussion, piano, voice, guitar and drum kit.

Individual lessons are available on all instruments.

Group lessons begin in Year 4, within the college Instrumental Music Program, with oppor-tunities on the following instruments: strings, woodwind, brass and percussion.

Curriculum

Christian LivingAs King’s is a Christian College, our curriculum is integrated, providing students with a bibli-cal perspective on every subject area. Classes begin each day with prayer and devotions, including the ‘Just Like Jesus’ program, designed to assist students in building healthy values and a strong character.

Chapel is held in the church auditorium every Monday at 2.10pm. These services are con-ducted by our Primary Chaplain Pastor Peter Malcolm who is well supported by a caring, enthusiastic pastoral team.

In addition, students participate in a Christian Living class.

Year 3 has their specialist lessons on a Thursday, Year 4 on Tuesday. Please ensure students wear their sports uniform on their specialist day.

Physical EducationThis year formal swimming lessons will take place in Term 4. It is vital students are confident in the water and we encourage students to seek help in the form of swim squads or private lessons if they are still trying to master this skill.

A note needs to be sent to school if a student is not swimming or is unable to wear the school swimmers. Underwear should be brought to change into after swim-ming.

In Terms 1, 2 and 3, the students will be involved in developing certain gross motor and sport specific skills conducted by our PE Specialist, Mr. Stephens. These activities are classified as curriculum subjects and the students are expected to attend all lessons with the appropriate uniform.

Sporting games are held on Thursday afternoon and we play in the APS (Associated Private Schools) Competition. (Year 4 only). Year 3 will have their sport lesson on Tuesday (Terms 2 & 4 only) and need to wear their sport uniform.

NOTE: It is IMPORTANT for parents to refer to the Uniform Code p19-20 in this booklet for the guidelines regarding swimwear.

Home Learning

• Home learning for Year 3 students is sent home on Monday and is due in on Friday.

• Home learning for Year 4 students is sent home on Friday and is due in the following Thurs-day.

In Years 3 and 4, children have homework set weekly. It covers work completed in class and rein-forces concepts.

Home learning is a compulsory feature of a student’s learning experience. It is supplied to meet these main aims:

• Home learning helps the student and the teacher to know if the concepts taught have been un-derstood.

• Home learning reinforces the learning students have experienced that day/week.• Home learning develops self-motivation and habits of revision, skills practice, note-taking and

promotes efficient time management.

It is expected that home learning should take no longer than 20 – 30 minutes per night. Each week students will be given a math’s activity, revision of basic facts, a grammar activity or literacy based activity and possibly a theme-based activity. It is also expected that your child will read to you or read independently each night, with a reader from school, levelled at their level of fluency, or a novel. This should take an additional 15 -20 minutes.

Students will be shown how to set out their home learning. Please ensure that they only use sharp pencils and that their writing is neat and well set out. Years 3 & 4 students are not to use biros.

DiaryWe request that parents check and sign their child’s diary and reading log each night. Signing the student diary informs teachers that parents have read the school reminders and that your child has read to you. This helps you and the teacher to know that your child is doing what has been set.

Diaries will be checked daily. If for any reason your child is unable to complete the set home learning, please write a short note explaining any general or specific concerns. This will help us to monitor each child’s progress and keep the lines of communication open.

Under normal circumstances, students will be expected to catch up on incomplete homework. Planning around set activities is recommended.

School Uniform

Dress UniformAll students are to wear dress uniform to school each day except Sports Day and the as-signed Physical Education days when sports uniform is worn. Dress uniform needs to be clean, ironed and in good repair.

In the winter months T-shirts can be worn under shirts but must not be visible.

Hat College hats to be worn by boys and girls. No hat – no play. No external writing/names to be visible.Jumpers Only College jumper may be worn. If a student is cold in winter he/she may wear an undergarment, which must not be seen. The College jumper must be the outermost garment worn.College Vests Available for boys and girls. To be worn by those who find the College jumper too hot. College vests are not to be worn with sports uniform.College Bag Compulsory.

Sports UniformSports Shoes Children’s sports shoes should be ordinary lace-up sports runners. Basketball boots and skateboard shoes are not acceptable sports footwear.Sports Socks King’s short white socks for boys and girls (available at Uniform Shop). No other socks with logos or plain white socks are allowed.Sports Shorts To be worn by all students (must be purchased from the College Uniform shop). Sports shorts must be worn on waist.Tracksuits To be worn on Sports Day only. Tracksuit tops are not to be worn with dress uniform.

Swimmers - boys School speedos or skins.

Swim caps House swim caps are compulsory for all students.

GeneralGirls’ Hair Girls’ hair that is longer than the nape of the neck must be tied back in a ponytail or similar. Hair styles are to be kept simple. Some guidelines to assist parents:• No multiple braiding or the like • No hair is to be left loose • Hair is to be clear of the eyes • Hair colouring must be natural looking • Two-tone hair colouring is not acceptable Students will be excluded from school until hair colour is acceptable.

Hair AccessoriesThe only hair accessories allowed are the official College scrunchies, navy or white ribbons and navy headbands which can all be purcased at the College Uniform Shop which also sells headbands. Alice bands or ornamental bows, flowers, hair wraps etc. are not allowed. A final decision on hair will always be at the discretion of Senior Staff.

Boy’s Hair Hair must be tidy, short and clear of the collar. All hair cuts must be of conservative style. The spirit of the code is that haircuts should not follow temporary fads or be attention-seek-ing. A very small amount of hair product may be used if it helps student to comply with the code. Hair colour should be natural looking. Students will be excluded from school until hair is acceptable. A final decision on hair will always be at the discretion of Senior Staff.

Jewellery No jewellery is to be worn by male or female students with the exception of a watch.

Earrings No male student is permitted to wear earrings. Girls may wear one pair only – plain studs or sleepers – in the ear lobe. No coloured stones or fancy designs are acceptable.
