Comenius University in Bratislava FACULTY OF PHARMACY
Y E A R B O O K
Academic year 2020/2021
Bratislava 2020
A WORD FROM THE DEAN
Dear colleagues and students,
together we are beginning the new academic year 2020/2021 and at this occasion, I would like to welcome and greet all the students, teachers and members of our Faculty who are involved in the process of education and who take part in the improvement of this demanding process.
I heartily welcome new students of Bachelor, Master and PhD. programmes for whom a new life experience begins. Together we are beginning a new academic year, in which the Faculty of Pharmacy of the Comenius University opens its doors for students in the Master's degree programme Pharmacy and the Bachelor's study programme Medical and Diagnostic Devices, as well as the doctoral study in various accredited study fields.
The beginning of the new academic year is in the spirit of uncertainty and fears continued from the end of the previous one. And even though we have managed most of the teaching process and the entire examination period of the previous academic year online, Comenius University and our faculty are preparing for the new year in a way as if this extraordinary situation would never have existed. However, the experience with e-learning, electronic teaching processes and the system of online tests will have to be kept in reserve by the faculty and it will be better prepared for a possible recurrence or persistence of a pandemic situation than in the past.
The Yearbook of the Faculty of Pharmacy will be your 'personal guide' throughout your studies. It will provide you with essential information on the academic schedule for the current academic year, as well as contacts and information of all departments and divisions of the Faculty. You have a new study plan for your disposal that reflects current knowledge and practice requirements. It is gradually being introduced to all study years and we believe that it will help you on your way to a fulfilled university education.
In the new academic year, we are faced with new responsibilities and tasks that our faculty has a wide potential to solve, in all the fields of pedagogical and scientific research, cooperation with practice and external educational and research institutions.
It is important for us to support young researchers and PhD. students who are interested in creative scientific work and are involved in research projects. We, therefore, encourage our students and welcome their involvement in international mobility in the hope that we will continue to be a faculty where the quality of studies and scientific achievements meet.
Dear colleagues and students, in opening a new academic year, please let me take the opportunity to wish you good health, plenty of patience and enthusiasm for everyday work. I believe the 1st-year-students will integrate quickly in their academic and social endeavours and can feel at home at our Faculty. Bratislava, June 2020 Prof. PharmDr. Pavel Mučaji, PhD.

* * * The scientific and research activities of the department are directed at the basic research in
the field of analytical methods and control processes substantial for the identification and quantification of the components in biological systems in the terms of health and environment protection. The centre of our studies is in the field of instrumental analysis (2D HPLC-UV/MS, 2D CE-UV/DAD/LIF/MS, RRFA, biosensors, UV-VIS and Fluorescence spectrophotometric methods, etc.) with the emphasis on the multicomponent inorganic analysis of biogenic and toxic elements, the level of drugs and their metabolites in biological matrixes, profiling of endogenous substances as potential biomarkers, and analysis the foreign substances in environment. The research is mainly oriented at the field of biomedical studies (pharmacokinetics, metabolism studies, biomarkers monitoring, diagnostic studies, etc.) In the area of nuclear pharmacy, the Department focuses on the design, and the field of preparation and analytical evaluation of new molecules as potential new radiopharmaceuticals and coordinative chemistry of biologically important substances.

design and study of the properties of bioactive molecules – potential drugs. The central idea of departmental research is the chirality of bioactive compounds, their preparation and their effect upon biosystems. The research activity is mainly performed in the following areas:
- study of newly synthesized compounds with -adrenergic effect, stereo selective synthesis of selected aryloxyaminopropanol type compounds; - design, preparation and study of properties of new membrane active amphiphilic compounds including the assessment of their biological activity at the cellular and sub-cellular level, study of their colloidal properties, study of nanocarriers; - utilization of enantiomeric separation methods for evaluation of stereo selective metabolism of selected drugs possesing stereogenic centre(s); - design, preparation and study of coordination compounds of biologically important central atoms and ligands mainly with antiflogistic, radioprotective and superoxide dismutase like activities; - research in the field of compounds negatively influencing the human body (illicit drugs, antidoping and other prohibited compounds) in the framework of the Centre of excellence in security research; - employing computer methods for designing of new biologically active compounds – CAMD (computer-aided molecular design); - multiinstrumental spectral and analytical methods (GC-MS/MS, LC-MS/MS LC- high resolution MS (Orbitrap), DART)

* * * The department research is focused on requirements of the social practice and is targeted
at the drugs with the biogenic origin: The Section of Pharmacognosy in its research comes out of natural materials (drugs,
fresh plants, vegetable and animal products), isolates their active substances, determines their
structure, biochemical, physical and chemical characteristics, studies the mechanics of their
– 22 –
production and their significance in the context of living nature. It studies mutual interactions of
secondary metabolites and modifications connected with its biological characteristics in vitro and in
vivo. It also studies anatomical and morphological evaluation of practically significant drugs.
The Section of Botany and Pharmacoergasy – the main areas of scientific activities of
Section of Botany and Pharmacoergasy are focused on botanical research of medicinal plants and
mushrooms, anatomy and morphology of plant organs, diversity of medicinal plants and
mushrooms, and agriculture of medicinal plants with emphasis to influence of environmental
factors to quality of plant drugs.

The comer's scientific and research activities aim at studying the conditions under which
medicinal products and pharmaceutical excipients may be technologically processed into medicinal
products in a given pharmaceutical form which comply with the legality of pharmaceutical
technology. Research is comprehensive, from pre-formulation studies to drug fanulation design to
quality assessment. Usable research concerns industrial pharmacies as well as individually
prepared medicines.
As a matter of priority, the Department focuses its research capacities on modern
therapeutic systems and medicinal products using new excipients of higher-generation medicines.
The main pillar of the research work is pharmaceutical nanotechnology, which makes it possible to
study many systems, from macromoleks to nanoparticles, using supporting systems based mainly
on polymers and their conjugates with the active substance. The development of pharmaceutical
nanotechnology gives the department the opportunity to study micellar systems, solid, including
inorganic nanoparticles, as well as protein and liposomal systems. The application of research in
pharmaceutical nanotechnology offers specific advantages and solutions in formulating medicinal
products in order to improve their bioavailability through targeted delivery to the site of the action
plan and better solubility and dissolution of the active substance.
