BackgroundThe yearbook is an annual publication designed to showcase the graduating 3rd year. The book is distributed to Industry Contacts, potential applicants and visitors to the end of year show. We also use the yearbook as a marketing tool to raise the profile of the course with feeder colleges and the creative industries.

Target Audience The yearbook is aimed at contacts within the creative Industries, potential applicants and visitors to the end of year show.

Tone of VoiceProfessional, creative, Graphic Design. In the light of this the Yearbook is a high

spec, highly visible and professional publication that needs to communicate the practical and conceptual standards of the Graphic Design programme.

The ConceptThe book is based around the number 3 for a few reasons. Mostly because we are the third year to graduate from BAGD, thus completeing the first set of graduates. There are also 3 main tutors, 3 main studio spaces and it is 3 years that we have been here. Three it would seem. is the magic number.

The designFollowing the concept the book is designed to adhere to the rule of 3. Each student is allowed 3 images on their spreads, we have included 3 breaker pages, 3 visting professional profiles who were asked to describe the course in 3 words and so on.

The GridThe grid for the book is again related to the 3 concept, 9 columns being divisble by 3, giving us the best chance to easily play with 3 images across a spread or single page. Due to costs we kept a tight hold on the page count, noting that we had to give a double page spread to 42 students.

Colour SchemeConcept of 3 used here by sticking to a triple colour palette, Cyan, black and white. We wanted to use a bright and close to fluoro colour as possible but again to keep the costs down we were restricted to the standard 4 colour process. One colour that is easy to get quality, bright results from is blue, hence the focus on the cyan.

TypefaceWe wanted a Grotesk humanist Sans Serif typeface for the book, specifically something that looked pleasing when used as large text but also as a copy font. Akzidenz was the choice, and again follow-ing the concept of 3 by using a mixture of weights, Regular, Medium and Bold.

The WorkWe split the work into 3 different camera shots, birds eye view, package shots, poster shots adding macro shots to certain products when necessary. This way we were able to capture all kinds of products in an apropriate manner. Photographing onto white, with lights set up as to cause little shadow focusinng all attention onto the product at hand.

EditingWith a lot of photos we had to edit them as to make them brighter and to get rid of any shadow and grey areas, making the look of the photos consistant throughout the whole book.

The StudentsWe didn’t want a photo of the students on their pages as we felt it gave away valuable product space. However we wanted to somehow include all of the students in the book in some form of photo.

The ConceptCreating a ‘class of 08/11’ photograph by shooting everyone by themselves then editing everyone together. Making the shoot more personal by getting the students to bring in a prop to represent their personality.

The PhotosUsing an infinity drop we photographed the students one by one, then taking the best images from everyone in the class wePhotoshopped all of the students together.

The PhotographyTo create a good flow we needed to have some form of breakers between student spreads. So taking photos of our studio surroundings we found more applications of the 3 rule.

StyleUsing a specific half tone on the images to emphasise that we are a graphic design course.

AdjectivesAs a means to add more detail and student based information we decided to include words that summed up how we feel about the course and leaving to go into the industry. We took the words from the answers we got back from our student questionnaires.

Visiting ProfessionalsSomething that we felt has really helped us and promotes the course was the number of visiting designers and studios we had throughout the 3 years. With this in mind we selected 3 main pro’s to showcase in the book, Elmwood being a large mulitnational design agency, The Consult, local design studio and Mark howe, freelance illustrator.

ContentWe asked the pro’s to send us an image to use and to describe what they do and what they thought of us in 3 words.

The CoverFor the cover we wanted to show an insight to the inside of the book, giving a good indication of the design of the rest of the publication. Using the stylised half tone photography as used throughout the book.

The PhotoThe photo is an image representing the concept of three and also showing the graphic design department within Leeds College of Art. The image being of 3 lights which are above the entrance to Studio One, the third year studio.

The Quote PagesAn example of the quote pages included within the book. Notably used for pages about the tutors, giving them the chance to explain their thoughts on the previous 3 years.

The Student SpreadsAn example of a student double page spread, abiding by the 3 rule showcasing 3 pieces of work, along with contact info, rationale and placements.

The Three AnswersSomething we have included to give the book more personality and another point of interest. Answers to personal or deign led questions, dependant on the style of ration-ale at hand. Questions such as, Favourite form of potato and typeface most oftenly used.

The Grid DesignAs a means to further represent graphic design we have included grid pointers throughout the book. They work well to break up any extra white space but also as a minor point of interest.
