od has created innumerable species for a specific purpose. Everything and everyone are good at its place. Nothing

is harming one another. Among all the species, man is above all. He has been given with amazing faculties that make him extra ordinary. He has the potential to reach the pinnacles of glo-ry or reach the lowest position. In this way, the ball is thrown in a human be-ing’s court to decide what to become. Here, in this article, I would like to discuss about the qualities of a worthy person.

First is his or her personality. He or she knows his or her personality well. He has introspected and has learnt that who I am. Where from I came? Where I am going to? He knows the rights of His Creator as well as peo-ple. He knows that the most important deed in God’s eyes is manner. Treating His creation with etiquettes, is an im-portant characteristic of the worthy person. He always wants to take full advantage of the situation where he can help anyone, regardless of creed, color, sex, etc. In short, his personality is a realized personality.

Second is foresightedness. He al-ways looks at the end of the tunnel, however, he lives carefully in the present. Moments of happiness or sadness don’t bother him very much because he knows that all the worldly happiness or sadness is temporary. Moreover, it is not advisable to get entrapped in the snares of worldly comfort and ease. He, after careful ob-servation, has come to conclude that I have to live here in order to have the best in the Hereafter.

Third is humility. He never is arro-gant. He is down to Earth. He speaks according to situation. He never speaks against the needs of situation. After a careful observation, he has come to conclusion that sometimes

it is better to keep silent because the need of the hour demands that. If he feels that his speaking can prove disas-trous, he remains silent. In this way, his humility is real humility. He never bothers what others say. He does for the satisfaction of the heart and His Creator.

Fourth is morality. He is good in conduct and business with everyone. He never loses sight of the fact that in order to please His Creator, he has to do what he is entitled to do. If a person does wrong to him, he never thinks of harming him or her. Aware of the fact that a true person does good to everyone for the sake of God, in this way, he sets an example. He, sometimes, forces his opponent to

think differently about him. Fifth is silence. It is one of the most

important characteristics of the wor-thy person to remain silent. He reads less but ponder over the things that he has learnt. According to one of the great scientists that was discussed in the monthly, Science Reporter, a person told him that I read a large number of books. The scientist was pleased. But he remarked that your way of reading is not good. If you read in this fashion, then it means that you have no time to think. You only add knowledge but without understanding anything. However, it doesn’t mean that they are silent in the times of speaking. At the moments of speaking, he speaks through many ways.

Sixth and last is his or legacy. Knowing his deeds, almost everyone in the society wants to imitate him or her. Such is an attraction of his or her personality that everyone is ready to copy his or her style. He or she doesn’t feign but still people feel that it is an honor to be like him or her.

Really, a worthy person is an asset. Now, it is up to us to decide whether we want to become a ray of hope or keep disturbing others in whatever manner we can do. The need of the hour is to prepare ourselves as the real models of truth, love, humility, etc., and become beneficial person.

Confucianism is one of the most influ-ential religious philosophies in the history of China, and it has existed for over 2,500 years. It is concerned

with inner virtue, morality, and respect for the community and its values. Confucius was a philosopher and teacher who lived from 551 to 479 B.C.E.

Confucianism is a philosophy and belief system from ancient China, which laid the foundation for much of Chinese culture. Con-fucius was a philosopher and teacher who lived from 551 to 479 B.C.E. His thoughts on ethics, good behaviour, and moral character were written down by his disciples in several books, the most important being the Lunyu. Confucianism believes in ancestor worship and human-centered virtues for living a peaceful life. The golden rule of Confucian-ism is “Do not do unto others what you would not want others to do unto you.”

There is debate over if Confucianism is a religion. Confucianism is best understood as an ethical guide to life and living with strong character. Yet, Confucianism also began as a revival of an earlier religious tradition. There are no Confucian gods, and Confucius himself is worshipped as a spirit rather than

a god. However, there are temples of Confu-cianism, which are places where important community and civic rituals happen. This debate remains unresolved and many people refer to Confucianism as both a religion and

a philosophy. The main idea of Confucianism is the im-

portance of having a good moral character, which can then affect the world around that person through the idea of “cosmic harmo-

ny.” If the emperor has moral perfection, his rule will be peaceful and benevolent. Natural disasters and conflict are the result of stray-ing from the ancient teachings. This moral character is achieved through the virtue of ren, or “humanity,” which leads to more vir-tuous behaviours, such as respect, altruism, and humility. Confucius believed in the im-portance of education in order to create this virtuous character. He thought that people are essentially good yet may have strayed from the appropriate forms of conduct. Ritu-als in Confucianism were designed to bring about this respectful attitude and create a sense of community within a group.

The idea of “filial piety,” or devotion to family, is key to Confucius thought. This de-votion can take the form of ancestor worship, submission to parental authority, or the use of family metaphors, such as “son of heaven,” to describe the emperor and his government. The family was the most important group for Confucian ethics, and devotion to family could only strengthen the society surround-ing it.

While Confucius gave his name to Con-fucianism, he was not the first person to discuss many of the important concepts in Confucianism. Rather, he can be understood as someone concerned with the preservation of traditional Chinese knowledge from earli-er thinkers. After Confucius’ death, several

of his disciples compiled his wisdom and car-ried on his work. The most famous of these disciples were Mencius and Xunzi, both of whom developed Confucian thought further.

Confucianism remains one of the most in-fluential philosophies in China. During the Han Dynasty, emperor Wu Di (reigned 141–87 B.C.E.) made Confucianism the official state ideology.

During this time, Confucius schools were established to teach Confucian ethics. Con-fucianism existed alongside Buddhism and Taoism for several centuries as one of the most important Chinese religions. In the Song Dynasty (960–1279 C.E.) the influence from Buddhism and Taoism brought about “Neo-Confucianism,” which combined ideas from all three religions. However, in the Qing dynasty (1644–1912 C.E.), many scholars looked for a return to the older ideas of Con-fucianism, prompting a Confucian revival.

The worldly concern of Confucianism rests upon the belief that human beings are fundamentally good, and teachable, improv-able, and perfectible through personal and communal endeavor, especially self-cultiva-tion and self-creation. Confucian thought fo-cuses on the cultivation of virtue in a morally organised world.

Roads Craving For Renovation

The situation of the roads in Srinagar are turning bad to worse with each passing day while the authorities

concerned have been acting as mute spectators with taking no action in this regard. It is only people who are suffering on the ground, their vehicles that are getting damaged due to the potholed conditions of the roads here. One fails to understand that silence maintained by the con-cerned department so far. Such a situation on the ground never changed, especially in the months of March and April. The million dollar question remains how long the people here are supposed to face the hardships due to the official apathy? There is no end when it comes to the sufferings of the commuters on the ground. It won’t be an exag-geration to speak that the concerned department has utterly failed to verify whether the substandard ma-terial is being used during the mac-adamization or not. One can question the department about its inquiry over the allegations of the use of substandard material as the allega-tions never got any reply from the concerned department rather the department went for the macadam-ization process every year, which failed to sustain for a longer period and thus simultaneously became an unending issue for the people. Therefore, the administration should consider constituting the commit-tees who should be tasked to ensure no use of substandard material dur-ing the macadamization process and those found involved by the com-mittees should be taken to the task.

JAMMU: A group of 40 farmers, includ-ing women farmers was flagged off for one day exposure visit within UT here today.

Director Agriculture Production & Farmers Welfare Jammu, Inder Jeet flagged off the farmers from Krishi Bhawan. The exposure visit has been organized by Department of Agricul-ture, Sub Division Marh under Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana- Per Drop More Crop (PMKSY- PDMC).

Among others present on the occa-sion included Joint Director Agriculture (Extension) Dr Shahid Iqbal Sheikh; Sub-Divisional Agriculture Officer Marh, Dr Ashwani Kumar Jojra and other senior officers.

Interacting with the farmers on the occasion, the Director Agriculture Jammu underlined that objective of such programmes is to make the farm-ers aware of latest technological inter-ventions in the field of agriculture to achieve the target of doubling the farm-ers’ income by 2022. The farmers were

advised to replicate the new technology in their respective areas that they will learn during the visit and further share it with other fellow farmers.

It was given out that farmers from all four zones of Sub-Div Marh will visit Krishi Vigyan Kendras and Advanced Centre for Rainfed Agriculture in Jammu and Samba Districts, where they will interact with Agri experts.

Further, it was appraised that the PMKSY- PDMC focuses on enhanc-

ing water use efficiency at farm level through Micro Irrigation technologies viz. Drip and Sprinkler irrigation sys-tems. Micro irrigation technique not only helps in saving water but also in reducing chemical fertilizer usage, labour expenses and other input costs.

Agriculture Extension Officer Pounichak, Dr Tirath Singh as Team Leader and one officer from each zone are accompanying the farmers during the visit.

Court sentences Javaid Ahmad Bhat of Kremshore to life imprisonment

Workshop on ‘Sewerage and Drainage issues of Srinagar’ held

Awards compensation of Rs.5.00 lacs in favour of the mother of victim

SRINAGAR: The Court of Principal Sessions Judge Srinagar Abdul Rashid Malik sentenced Javaid Ahmad Bhat S/o Abdul Gani Bhat R/o Kremshore Khan Sahib, Budgam to imprisonment for life.

The accused was convicted under sec-tion 302 RPC on 13-03-3021 for causing the death of Mst. Gulshana D/o Ghulam Hassan Sofi R/o Kremshore Budgam.

While sentencing the convict, the Court observed that convict is a young man of 29 years of age and is in judicial custody since the date of his arrest. There is nothing on record from which it can be deduced that accused cannot be reformed or rehabili-tated or he will prove a menace for the society if not awarded the death penalty.

As laid down by Hon’ble Supreme Court in the cases discussed supra that brutality and manner in which murder

was purported may be a ground but not the sole criteria for judging whether the case is “rarest of rate cases”. Every murder is brutal and difference between one from another may be on account of mitigating or aggravating features sur-rounding the murder.

To conclude, on preparation of the bal-ance sheet of mitigating and aggravating circumstances, length of detention for which the convict remained in custody and his age speak for the fact that the case cannot be bracketed as one of the “rarest of rare case”.

Therefore, keeping in view the entire facts and circumstances of the case, this is not a fit case for inflicting death sentence under Section 302 RPC, therefore, it will be just and proper to sentence the convict Javaid Ahmad Bhat S/o Abdul Gani Bhat R/o Kramshore Khan Sahib, Budgam to imprisonment for life under section 302 RPC and execution of the sentence of life imprisonment shall be subject to confir-mation of the High Court in terms of Sec-tion 374 of Cr.P.C.

While granting compensation of Rs.5.00

lakhs to the mother of the victim namely Mst. Zainab (Aged 55 years) W/o Ghulam Hassan Sofi R/o Kremshore Budgam, the Court observed that every criminal Court is also under a legal duty to apply its mind to the question of compensation to the victim of the crime. The deceased was a young girl. The criminal justice system has to address the plight of the victim also. Mere punishment will not satisfy the victim who has suffered as a result of commission of the crime. She was killed so brutally but the real victims are her parents. One cannot assess the shock and trauma caused to her parents, near and dear ones. No amount of compensation can repair the irreparable loss caused.

It has been held by the Supreme Court in Manohar Singh Vs. State of Rajasthan 2015 Supreme Court (SC) 42, wherein the Supreme Court has held as under:

We find that the Court of Sessions and the High Court have not fully focused on the need to compensate the victim which can now be taken to be integral to just sen-tencing. Order of sentence in a criminal case needs due application of mind. s

Jamaica: Newly-installed Test captain Kraigg Brathwaite said he is ‘very proud’ to have been tasked with the responsibility of leading the West Indies, calling it a privi-lege to take over the mantle from Jason Holder who led the team in 37 Tests since being thrusted into the role in 2015.

“I just want to thank god for giv-ing me this opportunity, and also want to say I thought Jason Holder did a superb job leading the Test team for the last five years, so ob-viously taking over from him is a privilege,” Brathwaite said. “I was very happy [to be made captain], obviously very proud, and I look forward to the challenge.”

Cricket West Indies’ decision to give Brathwaite the top job com-pleted a frenetic few months for the 28-year-old opener. Only last No-vember, he was relieved of vice-cap-taincy by the selectors on the New Zealand tour with an eye on him focussing on his batting. But a dra-matic tour of Bangladesh, punctu-ated by high-profile withdrawals,

including that by Holder owing to Covid-19 concerns, shone the light on Brathwaite’s leadership quali-ties.

Under him, players like Kyle May-ers and Rakheem Cornwall found their best form as a depleted West Indies side inflicted a 2-0 series loss on Bangladesh. “Well, I really en-joyed that tour,” he said. “For me, I

just made sure I let the guys know, to believe in themselves and believe in their ability. I’ve played youth cricket with most of those guys, and if not, first-class cricket for a num-ber of years, so I know the ability they have. Just assured them that they can do it.

“Just trust in your plans and be-lieve in them, and prepare well. The

word attitude is always key, and I thought we did that well, and it’s important for us as a team to contin-ue that same attitude.”

Brathwaite’s first assignment as a full time captain is a two-Test series against Sri Lanka beginning on March 21 at North Sound. While the games themselves will be an important placeholder in a new era of West Indies Test cricket, the cap-tain said he was aware of his prima-ry responsibilities as a batsman in the side. Brathwaite, who has gone 17 Tests without a Test hundred, is working on his balance against the fast bowlers.

“The more you’re balanced, the better your shots, and that was something important for me,” he said. “I also went about planning even better, in terms of how I want to go about my innings, and topping up on power. But mainly getting my balance in order, and backing your-self. You always have plans, and it’s to really trust them, that was the key for me. Planning was very very important.”

Hardik doubles up his offeringAhmedabad: Only a few days ago, before the start of the India-England T20I se-ries, Rohit Sharma had said that the five 20-over games to be played at Ahmedabad will not be a dress rehearsal for this year's T20 World Cup. And yet, two games down the line, the hosts, more than the visitors, have shown an incli-nation to experiment and test the reserves, if not find solu-tions to an ailing issue. From the openers to the middle order and to the overall team composition, everything wore a new look for India on Sunday (March 14).

One of the more interest-ing decisions taken was to play with only five bowling options, which meant that Hardik Pandya, whose bowl-ing skills have been sparsely used for more than a year and a half, had to deliver four overs.

From the perspective of the game itself, it was quite a tricky call, given that India have anyway come to the se-ries without a couple of their best fast bowlers. That only two overs of Washington Sun-dar were used in the Power-Play, a phase of the game he's most effective, meant the ab-sence of a bowling insurance carried with it all the possi-

bilities of backfiring. How-ever, from the larger view of finding the team's best com-bination heading to the next ICC tournament, it was a crit-ical call.

Even as Pandya failed to pick a wicket, he remained effective with his cutters bowled short of the length, which didn't allow the En-gland batters, who were at-tempting to swat him away most times, to get their timing right on the shots. It did help that the pitch was holding up a bit and Shar-dul Thakur's expert usage of the cutter had already reaf-firmed its effectiveness. Yet, despite the predictability and the effectiveness of the delivery, England batsmen didn't have a strong count-er, which allowed Pandya to persist with the ploy, leaving

him with no need to experi-ment.

"I thought India bowled well," Eoin Morgan, the En-gland captain admitted after his team's seven-wicket loss. "This was a different pitch to the one for the first game, less pace in it.

And then they came out and put us on the back foot almost from the start, and we didn't have a counter to that, which was disappointing."

Barring his second over, where Jason Roy and Dawid Malan picked 13, Pandya re-mained economical.

He even bowled one over in the powerplay and one in the death, conceding only 7 and 6 runs respectively from those.

"Credit to Hardik that he's bowling at least 3 overs for us in every game," Virat Kohli,

the Indian skipper, said. "And the next six to eight

months period he's promised he's going to commit every-thing to being the allrounder the team needs in all three formats. He plays for the team at all times and these kind of players are priceless."

It may not always turn out this way where the pitch will aid him, the batsmen won't have a counter and there be no need to resort to a Plan B. If Pandya is able to return to bowling on a consistent basis, the merits are plenty.

If he can give even two overs, it allows India to have the sixth bowling option, a role that none in India's bat-ting reserve can fulfil.

If he is able to deliver four overs on a consistent basis, like in the second T20I, it al-lows India to bat deep.

The five-man attack aligned its plans to the condi-tions expertly and helped In-dia claw their way back into the contest after England had controlled the pace for the first half of their innings.

However, much like the success of Ishan Kishan at the top, that could only be a part of an experiment - that they've been in denial of - de-spite its thumping success on Sunday evening.

England's error-riddled night crucial for long-term gains

This England limited-overs team rarely have a poor match in all three facets of the game. It is one of the reasons they have

been so consistent for so long. Even if they are slightly off colour in one area, they often make up for it in another. But following their comprehensive de-feat on Sunday evening in Ahmedabad, Eoin Morgan cited failures in execution in all areas of England’s performance. The only real positive? This was exact-ly the sort of surface Morgan wants his team to have more exposure to ahead of the World Cup.

He described the pitch as “quite slow, low, didn’t turn a great deal” and of the type that England thought they would get at the start of the series. “To become better in these conditions, you’re only going to do that by playing and making mistakes,” Morgan said after the game. “You tend to learn quicker when you’re winning and everything tends to run reasonably smoothly. You can integrate learning quite quickly. But equally, if we have to learn the hard way, it’s still going through that process of trying to learn game by game so when it comes to the World Cup in seven months’ time, we can be as best prepared.”

After being asked to bat first, at the interval England’s total appeared 10 or 15 runs short although Morgan thought 160 was around par given the slowness of the pitch. It should have been better than that, though. After ten overs, En-

gland were well placed at 83 for 2 but they were unable to get to grips with the slower ball strategy used by In-dia’s fast-bowlers in the second half of the innings. Only 35 runs came from England’s last five overs and although there was no lack of intent from the batsmen - they swiped, swung and even slogged hard - they simply could not get the measure of a sluggish pitch.

That was actually the case through-out the entire innings. Of England’s batsmen, only Morgan timed the ball with any consistency and even then, he was dismissed by a slower ball which bamboozled him. Some may criticise England’s start - at one stage, Jason Roy had 26 from 23 balls and Dawid Malan 18 from 18 - but both players were trying to be aggressive and find the boundary. It wasn’t like they were just knocking the ball around for ones and twos. Like most of England’s batsmen, they just couldn’t get their timing right. Roy’s frustration, in particular, was obvious.

“It is one [a pitch] that does probably expose our weakness in that we don’t play a lot on slow low wickets,” Morgan said. “The more that we can do that the better. You talk about posting a total on a wicket like that, I thought we were right in the game, we did a lot of the structure of our innings really well. We estab-lished partnerships and got to the point at which we tried to accelerate but man-aged to lose wickets at different stages. You have to give some credit to India, I

thought they bowled particularly well.” At times, it appeared that England’s batsmen were trying too hard, swinging wildly at deliveries and ending up a long way away from them. Morgan said one area he thought his batsmen needed to improve was in maintaining their shape when trying to hit the ball. “The biggest sixes guys hit are normally when it looks like they put no effort into it,” he said. “Trying to improve positions we get into, and when we do get into a position, take advantage of it.”

If England were going to defend their total, the bowlers needed to be as accurate and relentless as they were

in the opening game but a number of England’s bowlers were unable to gain any measure of control. Chris Jordan and Tom Curran conceded 13.40 and 13.00 runs an over respectively while Ben Stokes’ solitary over went for 17. It meant that despite Sam Curran and Jof-ra Archer conceding just 46 runs from their eight combined overs, India were always in control.

“I thought we could have been a little bit more accurate in line and the lengths that we bowled,” Morgan said. “The other night, the pitch really suited us, had more pace in it. But this took us out of our comfort zone today and really

was a typical Indian wicket. Your accu-racy has to be on and you’re bowling to guys really on their home patch when you talk about a wicket like this.”

Tom Curran’s display continued a poor recent run of form. In partnership with Jor-dan, Curran helped close out a number of games for England last year, including in Durban against South Africa in February and at the Ageas Bowl against Australia in September. He won praise from Morgan after the second of those matches, when his final over secured England a tight two-run victory, and it appeared then that he had nailed down a place in England’s first-choice team.

But his recent performances have been largely disappointing. He has conceded more than 12 runs an over in three of his past four T20Is and his two overs today were a distillation of the issues which afflicted him during a middling series against South Africa in November. Then, Curran served up far too many poor deliveries which were dispatched to the boundary. One of his overs in the first T20I in Cape Town went for 24. Another in the third game went for 22.

Here, he had the same issue. Replac-ing the injured Mark Wood, Curran’s first over went for 16 and contained one ball in the slot, another short and wide outside off-stump and finally a bouncer with fine leg up. In his second over, which went for 10, there was yet another delivery in the slot, which Vi-

rat Kohli eased over long-off for six. Sometimes in T20 cricket, a bowler can go for runs despite bowling well. In his past four matches, Curran has conced-ed runs because he has bowled poorly. His variations and cool head at the death can be valuable, but he must bowl better than he has done of late.

Then there was England’s fielding. Two vital chances were dropped and both should have been taken. Jos But-tler missed Kohli down the leg side off Jordan when the Indian skipper had ten to his name. It was a diving chance but at a relatively comfortable height. Later, Ben Stokes dropped Ishan Kis-han on 40, a sitter for most fielders let alone someone as good as Stokes is. If both had been taken, the game may have been far closer than it ended up. “They normally do cost you,” Morgan said of the misses. “I do think we were below par with our standards.”

All in all, it was a day when En-gland fell below their standards in all three facets of the game. Not by much perhaps but by enough. And when you do that against a side as good as India, they tend to make it count. But despite the loss, Morgan and England will have learnt a lot from this game. These are the sort of pitches they need to get bet-ter on and this game gave them a fair idea of their current shortcomings. It was clearly a disappointing perfor-mance but it was also one that could yield long-term dividends.

With focus on Olympics, rijiju says national sports camps to be held at GulmargNew Delhi: Noting that the government’s focus is to promote Olympic sports in the country, Union Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Monday said in Rajya Sabha that Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh have huge potential in providing talent in such disciplines to the country.

The Minister, while re-sponding to a volley of ques-tions during the ‘Question Hour’, said, “We have now identified Gulmarg as a right place to organise national camps for Olympics from now on.”

He said, “Kashmir has amazing potential in football, they have performed exceed-ingly well at the national lev-el. Football will be promoted as a priority. We will launch some more programs in Kashmir. Football will be our main agenda.”

Forty small centres at the block level and 140 small Khe-lo India centres are already set up in J&K, he added.

The Minister said water sports were coming up in a big way across Jammu and

Kashmir. “We will inaugu-rate water sports in Dale Lake this summer. Water sports have a great potential in Kashmir and we have had many potential and success stories in this area,” he add-ed.

On being asked if there has been any plan of resuming in-ternational cricket matches in Jammu & Kashmir, Rijiju said, the government would “love to do it” and “I now see no problem in holding such sporting event”.

The Minister, however, said, “Cricket in the country is promoted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and decisions on hold-ing cricket matches are taken

independently by it. There-fore, if the BCCI decides to hold matches in Jammu & Kashmir, the government will encourage the cricketing body and provide all required support.”

Meanwhile, the Minister said, “My aim is to bring India in top 10 by the 2028 Olympics and to make it possible we have to create sports facilities at the ground level. Thus, we intend to start about 1,000 Khelo India Sports Centers across the country.” He also argued that India has around 700 districts and this means that “we will have at least one centre per district, while some districts will have more”.

West Indies beat sri Lanka by 5 wickets, win OdI series 3-0

North Point (Antigua): Darren Bravo’s fourth one-day international century steered the West Indies to a five-wicket win over Sri Lan-ka and a sweep of the three-match ODI series.

Bravo was out for 102 in the 47th over when the West Indies needed only 26 runs to overhaul Sri Lanka’s total of 274-6. He shared an 80-run partnership with captain Ki-eron Pollard, who finished 53 not out as the home side won with nine balls to spare.

Bravo earlier joined with Shai Hope in a 109-run part-nership for the third wicket which put the West Indies on target to victory after the hosts had been 39-2 in the 10th over.

Captain Jason Holder end-ed the run chase with a six from the third ball of the 49th over as West Indies ended on 276-5.

Bravo’s century was his first in an ODI since June 2016, when he scored 102 against South Africa at Bridgetown, Barbados.

“I think today was an im-portant day for me,” Bravo said. “Yesterday my sister celebrated her 30th birthday. I wasn’t there for her cele-bration so I knew I had to do something special for her. I just want dedicate this one-day hundred to her.”

Bravo had been hinting at the onset of his best form with scores of 58, 19 and 47 in the three-match Twenty20 series, which the West Indies won 2-1. He also scored 37 not

out and 10 in the first two matches of the ODI series.

He emulated the perfor-mances of Hope, who made 110 to help West Indies win the first match of the series by eight wickets, and Evin Lewis, who scored 103 to help the home team win the sec-ond match by five wickets.

Bravo said he took inspi-ration from the innings by Hope and Lewis which have led a strong West Indies batting performance in the series, saying it gave “us the motivation to go out and do well.”

Once again, Sri Lanka lost the toss and was asked to bat first. Danushka Gunathila-ka (36) and captain Dimush Karunaratne (31) got the tourists off to a solid start with a 68-run opening stand.

But the middle order couldn’t capitalize on the start, and Sri Lanka slipped to 151-6 in the 32 over. Ashen Bandara and Winandu Hasa-ranga revived the innings with an unbroken 123-run partnership for the seventh wicket.

Bandara finished 55 not out, a watchful innings from 74 balls, while Hasaranga smashed an unbeaten 80 from 60 balls with seven fours and three sixes.

Hasaranga’s maiden ODI 50 came from 48 balls and he struck the next 30 runs from only 12 deliveries.

The teams meet in a two-match Test series starting at the same venue next weekend. — AP

ronaldo hails Pele after eclipsing the Brazilian’s goal-scoring haulMadrid: Cristiano Ronal-do hailed Pele after he sur-passed the Brazilian great’s goal-scoring haul in official matches by netting a hat-trick in Juventus’ 3-1 Serie A win over Cagliari on Sunday.

Since soccer’s world gov-erning body FIFA does not keep an official record of who is on top of the all-time scoring list, it is a bench-mark that is hotly disputed.

Several media outlets pre-viously hailed Ronaldo for breaking the record when he reached 760 goals as he had supposedly surpassed the record set by Austria and Czechoslovakia striker strik-er Josef Bican. However, the Czech FA subsequently said in January that Bican’s to-tal was actually 821 goals, following a review of his sta-tistics during a career span-ning from 1931 to 1955.

On Sunday, however, Ron-aldo ignored Bican’s revised total to claim he was now on top of the scoring pile after surpassing Pele’s tally of 767.

“My everlasting and un-conditional admiration for mister Edson Arantes do Na-scimento (Pele), such is the respect that I have for mid-20th century football, led me to take into account his 767 score, assuming his nine

goals for Sao Paulo State Team, as well as his single goal for the Brazilian Mili-tary Team, as official goals,” Ronaldo wrote on Instagram.

“Today, as I reach the 770th official goal in my profes-sional career, my first words go straight to Pele. There’s no player in the world who hasn’t been raised listening to stories about his games, his goals and his achieve-ments, and I’m no exception.

“And for that reason, I’m filled with joy and pride as I acknowledge the goal that puts me on top of the world’s goalscoring list, overcoming Pele’s record, something that I could never have dreamed of while growing up as a child from Madeira.”
