All throughout the year, especially during this hallowed season, we hear this phrase. But do we truly believe its meaning? We educate our younger ones, make stickers and billboards and exhibit them on our vehicles. We repeat this slogan as a

predetermined statement and whisper when the situation is not favourable as expected.

But, this adage is actually difficult to observe.

The world we live in persuades us to seek out personal gains, the result of which is that we maintain the balance between things we receive and gifts given out.

We get temporary contentment from amassing goods and wealth which die away quickly. Instead, doing charity and helping others give us continuing joy and happiness.

Here comes the prime theme of Christmas.

The sparkling cute present kept under the Christmas tree is not Christmas. But it is a celebration of love, joy and peace, and these are the gifts we have to give to the needy. We often wait for these gifts to be received first and only then we are ready to offer gifts to others. This causes the opposite effect – better to receive than give. But the true meaning of Christmas can be experienced when we offer and give without expecting anything in return.

Christmas is the greatest tale of recognition ever told. The holy season provides an occasion to offer forgiveness and reconciliation to people who come across our lives. Let us take a similar step and celebrate Christmas in its truthful way.

MD’s Message

V George AntonyManaging Director

Taking a few seconds from my work and enjoying the rain through my window pane in office, I watched

the dust on the glasses on my window being washed away by the rain. There was so much of dust due to the construction of metro happening outside, adding to the smoke from vehicles. All this is present in the air that we breathe. The buses, lorries, cars, and autos discharge so much of smoke from their nozzles that it circulates in the air and goes straight into our lungs and enters the cells in our body. The smoke is full of chemicals that make the air polluted.

We are not giving much importance for clean and fresh air – two essential things we all need to live. Every cell in our body needs oxygen through clean air, and if the supply of this is stopped for more than 10 seconds, we are finished. The air we breathe in our cities are fully polluted and there is no reduction in the pollution.

All of this is affecting not just us but also the plants and trees which release oxygen for us by taking in carbon dioxide. They also breathe like we do through their leaves. When I saw the rain wash the window pane, I was thinking of the rain washing the dust from the leaves of plants and trees. Just think how nature helps these plants and trees breathe properly.

Washing the leaves of accumulated dust by the rain! What a way nature cares for itself!

When we walk through a garden or any place where there are many trees or through a forest or through paddy fields or by the side of a river, don’t we feel a difference? Don’t we get rejuvenated? The amount of rich oxygen we get to breathe itself is the best healer and energy. If we breathe good air, we actually get loads of energy for our body.

Nowadays, gradually, the culture of building oxygen rooms is becoming popular in metro cities, where we can go in by paying some fee and breathe good oxygen and get energised. Breathing pure oxygen at hyperbaric pressures, in oxygen rooms, causes convulsions after a while. So the atmosphere in oxygen rooms is carefully regulated. But what I wanted to point out was that we have started to pay for oxygen also like we pay for water. Water pollution has grown beyond control that now we need to pay to get clean water. Gradually, oxygen is also coming to such a stage.

Now all are talking about yoga. What is yoga all about? It is about breathing air in such a way that it reaches all cells of the body in a more disciplined and calculated way. What can each of us do to contribute

to have clean air and clean oxygen? What can we do for the future generations, our children? How can we help them to have good air? If all of us can start thinking about this subject, then we become conscious about it. When we become conscious about the importance of it, we will start making corrections.

Can we have a few plants or vegetables in our backyard of our houses or at the terraces of our flats? Can we plan and have our own garden, if space is available? Can we have a few pots with plants in our office room? We need to actually contribute in our own small way to our mother earth to create good air and oxygen. When we have our own garden, and when we tend to our plants there will be so much of inner happiness and satisfaction that we can get out of it. If possible, think of creating some type of garden or green farm. It will help us get happiness, energy, peace, and freshness, which no money can buy.

All worries will go away when we are with nature. If we see a plant with full of dust on its leaves, try to clean them. It actually produces more oxygen and the freshness can be felt in the air around it.

How pure is the air we breathe?

ECONOMIC NEwSIndia ranks 4th among world’s most vacation-deprived nations

According to full service online travel site Expedia’s ’2015 Vacation Deprivation’ survey,

India is the fourth most vacation-deprived nation globally, with 65 per cent saying they feel very or somewhat vacation-deprived, and 20 per cent said they are very vacation-deprived. UAE topped the list of most vacation-deprived countries in 2015 (76 per cent), followed by Malaysia (73 per cent) and Singapore (71 per cent). If they had more vacation days, most Indians (67 per cent) would travel to new places (rather than favourite or usual ones), it revealed. The annual 2015 Vacation Deprivation survey is about vacation habits across multiple countries and continents. It was conducted on behalf of Expedia by Northstar, a globally—integrated strategic insights consulting firm.

This survey was conducted online from October 6—22, 2015 across 26 countries of North America, Europe, South America and Asia Pacific among 9,273 employed adults aged 18 years and older. Globally, Indians are the most likely (61 per cent) to associate vacationing a great deal with their overall happiness, followed by Thailand (56 per cent) and UAE (55 per cent), the survey revealed.

The survey found that vacations continue to outrank happiness derived from finding money, getting a tax refund, celebrating a birthday and even being told they look younger than they are. The interesting fact is that while Indians are receiving on an average one additional vacation day this year (from 20 days last year to 21 days this year) and are more likely to say their bosses are supportive of them availing their vacation time than they were last year, they continue to avail fewer days

than they receive (an average of 16 days this year and last year). Despite not availing all the vacation days they receive, 73 per cent Indians feel they deserve more vacation than they currently get, and that they should receive on an average 15 extra days, according to the survey. - PTI

India crosses 5 GW-mark for solar installations: Study

The cumulative installed capacity of solar power in India has crossed the 5 GW mark.

“While total commissioned utility solar capacity in India reaches 4.7 GW; rooftop capacity stands at 525 MW. In 2015 year to date, close to 2 GW solar capacity has been commissioned,” Consultancy firm Bridge To India (BTI) said. BTI Managing Director Vinay Rustagi said in the statement, “Solar sector has got great momentum with capacity addition in 2015 more than doubling up over last year and total pipeline of over 15 GW of projects under bidding-cum-development.”

Encouraged by falling costs and growing need for green energy, states like Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have all announced substantial policy initiatives, he said. Rajasthan, Gujarat and MP have historically been the front runners, but the four southern Indian states are expected to dominate the market over next 2 years. As of today, the country has a solar project pipeline of 15.7 GW. The financial year 2016-17 will be Indian solar market’s transition year: annual capacity addition could top 6 GW with India becoming one of the leading solar nations worldwide, it said.

In the rooftop sector, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Gujarat are leading the total installed capacity.

In 2015, about 240 MW of rooftop capacity was added despite lack of any major rooftop specific initiatives.

“Consumer awareness has improved significantly and both business and residential consumers are keen to tap into rooftop solar. We expect the market to grow at over 50 per cent rate in the next few years,” it said.

pread the warmth of the Christmas season to all those around you and make this world a beautiful place to live.

Saint Nicholas (15 March 270 – 6 December 343), also called Nikolaos of Myra, was a historic 4th-century Christian saint and Greek Bishop in Asia Minor. Born in Patara, a land that is part of present-day Turkey, circa 280, St. Nicholas was a Christian bishop who helped the poor and sick. He lost both his parents as a young man and reportedly used his inheritance to help the needy. A devout Christian, he later served as bishop of Myra, a city that is now called Demre, in Turkey. St. Nicholas is the basis for the popular character of Santa Claus. It is just appropriate to learn about this admired personality during Christmas season.

Only after his death, the legend of his gift-giving grew. St. Nicholas transformed into the legendary character called Santa Claus, who brings Christmas presents to children around the world. There are many myths about St. Nicholas of Myra. One story tells how he helped three poor sisters. Their

father did not have enough money to pay their dowries and thought of selling them into servitude. Three times, St. Nicholas secretly went to their house at night and put a bag of money inside. The man used the money so that one of his daughters could marry. On the third visit, the man saw St. Nicholas and thanked him for his kindness. He also reportedly saved three men who were falsely imprisoned and sentenced to death.

Over the years, stories of his miracles and help for the poor spread to other parts of the world. He became known as the protector of children and sailors and was associated with gift-giving. He was a popular saint in Europe until the time of the Reformation in the 1500s, a religious movement that led to the creation of Protestantism, which turned away from the practice of honoring saints. St. Nicholas, however, remained an important figure in Holland.

The Dutch continued to celebrate the feast day of St. Nicholas, December 6. It was a common practice for children to put out their shoes the night before. In the morning, they would discover the gifts that St. Nicholas had left there for them. Dutch immigrants brought St. Nicholas, known to them as Sint Nikolaas or by his nickname Sinter Klaas, and his gift-giving ways to America in the 1700s.

According to another legend, during a great famine that Myra experienced in A D 311–312, a ship was in the port at anchor, which was

loaded with wheat for the Emperor in Constantinople. Nicholas invited the sailors to unload a part of the wheat to help in time of need. The sailors at first disliked the request, because the wheat had to be weighed accurately and delivered to the Emperor. Only when Nicholas promised them that they would not suffer any loss for their consideration, the sailors agreed. When they arrived later in the capital, they made a surprising find: the weight of the load had not changed, although the wheat removed in Myra was enough for two full years and could even be used for sowing.

In America, St. Nicholas went through many transformations and eventually Sinter Klaas became Santa Claus. Instead of giving gifts on December 6, he became a part of the Christmas holiday. In the 1820 poem “An Account of a Visit from St. Nicholas” by Clement Clarke Moore, he is described as a jolly, heavy man who comes down the chimney to leave presents for deserving children and drives a sleigh pulled by flying reindeer. The cartoonist Thomas Nast added to the St. Nicholas legend with an 1881 drawing of Santa as wearing a red suit with white fur trim. Once a kind, charitable bishop, St. Nicholas had become the Santa Claus we know today.

He had a reputation for secret gift-giving, so he is also known as Nikolaos the Wonderworker. The historical Saint Nicholas is commemorated and revered among most of the Christian churches. In addition, some other churches have been named in honor of Saint

Nicholas. Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors, merchants, archers, repentant thieves, children, pawnbrokers and students in various cities and countries around Europe.

Several sources state St. Nicholas is believed to have died on December 6, in the year A D 343. Nicholas’ tomb in Myra had become a popular place of pilgrimage. It is said that in Myra the relics of Saint Nicholas each year exuded a clear watery liquid which smells like rose water, called manna (or myrrh), which is believed by the faithful to possess miraculous powers. In 1993, a grave was found on the small Turkish island of Gemile, east of Rhodes, which historians believe is the original tomb of Saint Nicholas. On 28 December 2009, the Turkish Government announced that it would be formally requesting the return of St. Nicholas’s skeletal remains to Turkey from the Italian government. Turkish authorities have asserted that St. Nicholas himself desired to be buried at his Episcopal town, and that his remains were illegally removed from his homeland.

Often, the biggest problem people have with achieving their

goals (New Year Resolutions included) is GETTING STARTED. It seems that Sir Isaac Newton got it right with his First Law of Motion - bodies at rest tend to stay at rest. Many people just can’t seem to get underway and as a result they simply don’t take action.

So, what does it take to get started? One easy way is to have someone light a fire under you—or you light one under yourself.

So, what is the best way to get started? What can you do to better motivate yourself? Here are 10 simple steps:

1. Understand your purpose in life and live it.

2. Live outside your area of comfort.

Johnee Praveen RChief People Officer

KNOW THE CONCEPT

Moonlighting by EmployeesThis is a situation which arises among employees on account of dissatisfaction from present wage and salary structure. They feel that employer enjoys the increased profit and that they are being exploited by the employer. Consequently they agitate for hike in wages or take up another part-time job or business simultaneously with that of the original job. This is also known as Double Jobbing.

Dear Colleagues,

Motivating employees begins with “U”

3. Get involved with every facet of your work life.

4. Energise.5. Exemplify humility. Should

be able to laugh at yourself, admit vulnerabilities, and take criticism.

6. Learn something new every day (not by accident, but by design).

7. Believe in yourself and others.

8. Be persistent - able to explore options (never give up).

9. Strive for health in all aspects of their lives (physically, emotionally, spiritually, intellectually, and socially).

10. Rise above problems, adversity, loss, and momentary failure.

To ensure if the organisation is achieving the goals, being self-motivated is not sufficient.

You must also ensure that your colleagues also stay motivated. Because it is the togetherness of work that will help in achieving the goals which will benefit the employees and the organisation.

For a start, let us begin motivating our colleagues by voting them to help in selecting the “Monthly Service Quality Champion” which will be conducted on the first working day of every month.

If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange apples, then you and I will still each have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas.

So to be a better employee try to help each other and try to find happiness in the success of your colleagues.

• Do not talk when you are listening. Interrupting is one of the most common discourtesies. Listen aggressively with the full scope of your attention. You will be amazed at what you learn and how your counsel will soon be sought by many.

• “Anybody can become angry - that is easy; but to be angry with the right person, and to the right degree, and at the right time, and for the right purpose, and in the right way - that is not within everybody’s power and is not easy.” - Aristotle

• Knowledge is power. People who have achieved great success are not necessarily more skillful or intelligent than others. What separates them is their burning desire and thirst for knowledge. The more one knows, the more one achieves. Great leaders have techniques to allow them to arrive at the top of the mountain. Read the biographies of the world’s leaders and learn from their habits, inspirations and philosophies. Cultivate the important practice of active role modelling.

• All the answers to any questions are in print. How to improve as a public speaker, how to improve your relations with others, how to become fitter or develop a better memory – all aspects of personal development are dealt with in books. Therefore, in order to achieve your maximum potential, you must read daily. But, in this age of information, you must be ruthless in what you consume. Focus on your goals and read only those materials that will be an asset to you. Do not attempt to read everything for you are busy and have other tasks at hand. Choose what is

important and filter out what is of no value. Begin with a solid newspaper every morning for an excellent summary of the key events of the day. Also ensure that your readings are broadly based. For example, perhaps you may wish to read history, business, Eastern philosophy, health books etc. Then go to the library and develop the habit of making regular visits. Read the classics from Hemingway to Bram Stoker. Read history, with all its lessons on life and read biology for a new perspective. Look under the heading of “success” at the library and you will be amazed at the literature you will find: inspirational stories of people who developed greatness in the face of adversity, strategies for improving yourself physically, mentally and spiritually and texts to tap the unlimited power for success that certainly exists within us. Drink deeply from such books. Surround yourself with them and read them constantly whether on the bus each day or before you go to bed. Let them inspire and motivate you.

• Get into the habit of breakfast meetings. An early meal to touch base with a friend or business associate is a most pleasant way to start the day and allows you to maintain your contacts in the face of a busy schedule.

• If you live in a flat, always ensure that it is very bright and has a swimming pool. A pool is especially important because it will allow you to exercise no matter how busy your schedule. There is nothing like a refreshing swim after a long, productive day. You will feel excellent and sleep like a baby.

When we speak about brands, what comes to our mind is Pepsi, Coca-Cola,

Nike etc... how relevant are these to your daily life is questionable, but they do make an impact in our sense of thinking, purchase decisions and awake a sense of pride being associated with them in our lifestyle. Brands invest huge money to create an image among people, and always try to stand apart from the usual clutter. The more they succeed, the more powerful they become.

UAE Exchange has been a brand recognised world over through its services, conveniences, and customer friendly approach. Impeccable quality and service which exceed beyond customer expectations have made us one of the most adorable brands in the world. Our customers are our pride, and we go beyond the call of duty to create happiness in their faces.

Being recognised as a brand is one thing, and maintaining the same is another thing. Customer loyalty limits to how long a customer loves a brand. A bad experience makes customer disengage with the brand instantly. With increasing social media presence in our daily life, customers now have more options to raise their views, concerns and voice their opinion about their experience with brand. In most cases, bad experiences make the headlines.

Recent news which made the headlines in India was Maggi noodles. The original company came into existence in 1875 in Switzerland, when Julius Maggi took over his father’s mill. Pioneering in industrial

BD trEAtS

food production, the company focussed on improving the nutritional intake of worker families. Maggi was the first to bring protein-rich legume meal to the market, and followed up with a ready-made soup based on legume meal in 1886. In 1947 Nestlé acquired the Maggi brand.

Nestlé has often faced criticism in its advertising for not adhering to marketing regulations in developed countries, and making misleading claims in developing countries. Their advert for Bangladeshi television on British TV “help to build strong muscles, bone and hair” was highly controversial.

In India, Nestlé’s “Maggi” is synonymous with instant noodles and have a 90% market share. One of the most consumed and a favourite meal among the children and family, nestle was recently caught on the wrong side of customer’s taste. The product was found to have levels of lead content above the permissible limits, which is harmful to children and alike. Government had taken steps to remove the product from the ‘shelf ’ until it is being cleared by the food safety, which resulted in Nestle brand and stock value hit rock bottom in the recent months.

For any business, quality of service, openness, product and process innovations, social responsibility, customer relationships, etc. have become the focus areas. Customers share their experience with friends and relatives whenever they receive good quality service. Their word of mouth becomes our advertisement and eventually they become our

brand ambassadors.Business should be more

transparent while communicating to customers about our product and services and their benefits. False statements and fake promises affect the brand’s image badly. Advertisements should be creative, interesting and intriguing to stick on the customer’s mind and should be able to influence purchase decisions.

Building trust with our customers is important as they bring repeat business and new customers. What do we do for trust? It is very easy - Love your Customers, be Honest, Go the Xtra mile in Service. Trust with honest builds a long-lasting relationship with our customers.

India is moving digital. All business houses have prioritised digital media for branding and advertising. Conventional methods have been put aside. New realms have opened up. Innovative and creative content is the key. Mobile applications have taken over and customers have become more tech savvy.

Established and emerging business also need to align on their business strategies with these changes, as the new and the largest media opportunity of this generation awaits them. New brands will emerge and existing ones will be replaced. Dynamic business houses, who keep in pace with the current changes will survive. The power of brand will decide the future of business houses and their existence.

In olden days, the concept of banking was the privilege of the upper class. A normal being

couldn’t even think of such a game. The turning point in the history of bank was the nationalisation of 14 Banks in 1969. This reform contributed a “Great Change” for the ordinary class.

The process of Nationalisation enabled a larger group of ordinary people to step into the doors of a financial segment availing its products and services. The nationalisation of 6 banks again in 1980 and setting up of Regional Rural Banks in 1976 also paved way for the growth and development of the nation and humanity at large. The sole objective of banking activities which was profit maximisation was redefined as “Corporate Social Responsibility”.

Thus the concept of nationalisation was a major transformation witnessed by Independent India in terms of public utility services and also in our journey towards progress and triumph.

In 1969, the Banks of India had assets worth Rs. 4,200/- crores and liabilities worth Rs. 3,200/- crores. The present statistics depicts a forward moving trend showing assets worth Rs. 92 lakhs crore and liabilities worth Rs. 80 lakhs crore. Thus the public sector banking system of India is a model for the entire world. When the global financial crisis affected the banking sectors all over the world, public sector banks in India were the “Goose that laid Golden Eggs”.

The brilliant shift which progressed in the field of service and technology also influenced the global banking

scenario. America could be described as a “Land Moving on Plastics”. While the concept of “Green and Lean” popularised in Germany resulting in reduction in the use of cheques and papers. Today a bank account number is a self-sustained, self-contained and self-modulated banking service.

The concept of class banking to mass banking should be propagated for the future. As Gandhiji proposed “A decision made should benefit the under privileged group of society”. For this, each banking product and service should cater to the needs of a layman. A structure and design should be laid out removing all its complexities. We should move hand-in-hand for such a venture in the near future.

Each year, thousands of people die while waiting for a transplant, because no suitable donor can be

found for them. In India, according to various reports, nearly 5,00,000 people die because of non-availability of organs, 2,00,000 people die of liver disease, 50,000 people die from heart disease, 1,50,000 people await a kidney transplant but only 5,000 get one, and 10,00,000 lakh people suffer from corneal blindness and await transplant. Though it is difficult to think about organ donation when you have just lost a loved one, it is a generous and worthwhile decision that can save many lives. By thus donating, each person can save the

lives of roughly 7 individuals by way of organ donation and enhance the lives of over 50 people by way of tissue donation.

Organ donation is the harvesting of an individual’s organs after he or she dies for the purpose of transplanting them into another person. The person who gives the organs is called a donor while a person who receives the organ is called a recipient. All of us can be organ donors, irrespective of age, caste, religion, community, current or past medical condition. Children can also be organ donors after taking consent for organ donation from their parents. However active cancer, active HIV, active infection (for example, sepsis) or Intravenous (IV) drug use

21Xpressions - Year End Special 2015

are some of the contra-indications. Patients who have Hepatitis C may still donate organs to a patient who also has Hepatitis C. The same is true for Hepatitis B — but this happens in very rare cases. Most cancer patients may donate corneas. Vital Organs like heart, liver, kidneys, intestines, lungs, and pancreas can be donated only in case of ‘brain death’. However other tissues like corneas, heart valves, skin, bones etc can be donated only in case of natural death.

For organ recipients, a transplant often means a second chance at life. Vital organs such as the heart, pancreas, liver, kidneys and lungs can be transplanted to those whose organs are failing. It allows many recipients to return to a normal lifestyle. For others, a cornea or tissue transplant means the ability to see again or the recovery of mobility and freedom from pain. The act of organ donation has the ability to comfort grieving families. It is always difficult to lose a loved one. Many grieving families of organ donors draw comfort from the fact that their loss may help to save or improve the lives of others. Studies carried out to understand how a family’s wounds heal have shown that the support from family members helps a person to overcome grief. The support of friends and religious and cultural beliefs also help donor families. Most of the donor families agreed to donate organs because they felt that it was the only positive outcome from their loss.

National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) is a National level organisation set up under Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. It has two divisions:

“National Human Organ and Tissue Removal and Storage Network”

“National Biomaterial Centre”.

“National Human Organ and Tissue Removal and Storage Network”National Network division of NOTTO would function as apex centre for All India activities of coordination and networking for procurement and distribution of Organs and Tissues and registry of Organs and Tissues Donation and Transplantation in the country. At national level, the division will take care of various activities and coordinating necessary procedures. The division will also assist in data management for organ transplant surveillance, organ transplant and Organ Donor registry.

National Biomaterial Centre (National Tissue Bank)The main thrust and objective of establishing the centre are to fill up the gap between ‘Demand’ and ‘Supply’ as well as ‘Quality Assurance’ in the availability of various tissues.

Christmas is being celebrated all over the world as a universal festival and Christmas friend is a key note feature to show your love towards the closest ones. Here is my Christmas gift for whoever reads this write up.

A mother punished her 5 year old daughter for wasting a roll of expensive gold wrapping paper. Money was tight and she became even more upset when the child used the gold paper to decorate a box to put under the Christmas tree.

Nevertheless, the little girl brought the gift box to her mother the next morning and said,

“This is for you, Momma.” The mother was embarrassed by her earlier over reaction, but her anger flared again

when she opened the box and found it was empty. She spoke to her daughter in a harsh manner.

“Don’t you know, young lady, when you give someone a present there’s supposed to be something inside the package?”

She had tears in her eyes and said, “Oh, Momma, it’s not empty! I blew kisses into it until it was full.”

The mother was crushed. She fell on her knees and put her arms around her little girl, and she begged her forgiveness for her thoughtless anger. An accident took the life of the child only a short time later, and it is told that the mother kept that gold box by her bed for all the years of her life. Whenever she was discouraged or faced with difficult problems she would open the box and take out an imaginary kiss and remember the love of the child who had put it there.

In a very real sense, each of us, as human beings, have been given a Golden box filled with unconditional love and kisses from our children, family, friends and GOD. There is no more precious possession anyone could hold.

Friends, life is full of ups and downs, and we need something very strong to drive smoothly the “Gift of God (LIFE)” . Let us carry the message of Love towards our fellow beings during this Xmas and let all of us find some thread like a Golden Box to lean upon in adverse situations.

from Kasaragod to Chennai by train. Mr wife’s friends were there to see us off at the airport in Chennai. We flew from Chennai to Bangkok late night and we reached there early morning. A young driver came like a super hero, and he took us from Bangkok to Pattaya. The distance is nearly 150 kilometres from Bangkok to Pattaya. But the young man was an amazing driver. and the roads in Thailand are straight and good. It was a wonderful journey. He dropped us at Hotel Beverly Plaza and the crew led us to the reception. Unfortunately we forgot to thank the amazing driver. I still feel bad about it.

Rooms in Hotel Beverly Plaza were excellent. Free Wi-Fi, swimming pool, Indian restaurant, wide area to relax….. We were resting in our room when the telephone rang loudly. It was Cindy, one of our guides from Pattaya. She called me “bayya”, which made me think she knew Hindi. But she knew only just one word. She was very friendly and gave brilliant assistance. Most of the Thailand visitors are from India, especially from Tamil Nadu. We also made friends with Suresh and Savitha from Nepal. They were very pleasant and loveable. Suresh is a good vocalist

and both of them knew Hindi as well. After meeting us, they are eager to visit “Gods Own Country” - Kerala. We spent a few hours together taking photographs and enjoying.

On the first day, our programme was Alcazar Show. It was a breathtaking show involving variety of dances. On the next day, we went to Coral Island with our guide by a speed boat. There were many adventures like paragliding, diving, etc. My wife has no fear for such adventures. It was marvellous and we will never ever forget that day. After lunch, our programme was to visit an underwater world. It was one of the biggest aquariums with all kinds of fish. Jelly fish were fabulous with its transparent body, changing its colour with the altering light colours.

On the third day, we were free from guides. We took a taxi and went a little far from Pattaya. We enjoyed a car ride for half an hour and an elephant ride for twenty minutes. Those were excellent moments. We also took photos with a tiger – real tiger! All my family and friends were shocked seeing the photograph. We then visited an Art Gallery. It was also a fabulous place. After these rides, we

took a scooter taxi to reach the hotel. After completing three days in

Pattaya, we went to Bangkok. A Car and all necessary facilities were arranged by the guide. Hotel Ecotel at Bangkok was a good place but we felt Pattaya was superior compared to Bangkok. But Bangkok was cheaper than Pattaya. At Bangkok we also went to the Safari World Marine Park, Grand Gallery, Golden and Standing Buddha and a city tour. Safari World includes sea lion show, dolphin show, etc. But we felt sad after leaving Pattaya because Pattaya was a remarkable tourist place. On the whole it was a fabulous trip. Our driver dropped us at the airport. We said good bye to him and also to Bangkok.

Thanks to UAE Exchange Kasaragod team for organising such a wonderful and perfect trip. All our guides were of high quality and packed with information. They were very welcoming and cordial.

Paris summit on Climate Change

Climate change has always been a hot topic discussed in various forums ranging from

local to international levels. Over the years, discussions on tackling climate change have been made so frequently that the topic had become a cliché. I still remember how regularly it showed up in my school assignments for writing essays and doing science projects. But recently, the topic has become a great thing to consider. For almost a couple of weeks, climate change was among the leading news stories in various newspapers in the wake of Conference of Parties (COP21). What has brought us this far? Why is there so much of fuzz about it now? Why are world leaders showing so much of cooperation in climate change now?

Conference of Parties is not a new thing. It was when scientist cautioned about the fatal catastrophic consequences of increasing global warming decades ago that an international political response emerged on climate issues, which led to Rio Earth Summit in 1992. It was here that the UN Framework of Climate Change with a membership of 195 parties was adopted. But for the next few years, no much action

AROUND US

was followed as the governments were pondering on how exactly things were to be carried out. This argument among the developed nations and the developing nations directed to what we know today as the Kyoto Protocol in 1997, which had better clarifications on what steps were to be taken. But it too had drawbacks as some developing countries were not given any target on emissions.

But things did not turn out as expected when United States, the largest emitter then, decided not to sign the treaty. Then came the Copenhagen Conference of 2009 where world powers and biggest emitters decided to meet and head for a single goal – reduce global warming and tackle climate issues. Finally, now, we have reached 2015, talking about the Paris Climate Change Conference.

As it is evident, it has taken us many years.

The United Nations Climate Change Conference 2015 (Conference of Parties 21) held in Paris, France, and The Paris Pact on Water and Climate Change Adaptation announced by 290 organisations can be treated as an indication that we are have come too far with advancements and it is high time we kept apart political difference and took a serious decision for tackling climate change. Now, COP 21 is being viewed as the “last great hope” for tackling climate change.

The recent flooding in Chennai brought India to a standstill. There were rescue operations

carried out rigorously by the local people, volunteers from other states and by our great leaders in the Indian Army. Clean-up work and helping flood victims can be hazardous. It not only poses various health threats to the victims, but also for the rescue team. If ever you happen to be a part of a natural calamity like flood, there are some basic safety precautions to be considered.

Hand washing is the simplest thing you can do, and often the most neglected part when it comes to staying safe in rescue operations. Be sure to wash your hands, especially after you touch any surfaces or objects that may have been in contact with debris or other contaminated material. Because it’s flood and there’s water everywhere around you, it is not necessary that you are clean. Remember that you are surrounded by

the dirtiest water you have ever been in contact with.

Wear rubber gloves and boots to protect your hands and feet from the contaminated water, which may even have septic waste. Make sure you have enough protective equipment like hard hat, safety glasses, and steel toe or steel shank boots. Wear rubber boots if pooled water is still present in your work area. Use vinyl or latex gloves to handle items that may have been in contact with floodwater. To avoid possible allergic reactions, wear a surgical mask or respirator if you suspect a potential mould problem. Mould can grow on surfaces inside previously flooded buildings, or on unpreserved food or grain.

After your rescue operations, spend amble time to clean yourself. Personal decontamination is as essential as the other steps. Scrub down potentially contaminated equipment using clean water and a disinfecting detergent. For example, you should try to clean mud

or debris off your boots before entering clean buildings or vehicles. You should also be aware that decomposing plant matter or sewage can use up oxygen and generate hazardous gasses or contaminants like carbon monoxide and methane. In a confined, unventilated space, the result can be a potentially fatal breathing hazard.

During flooding, in most case, the electricity of the entire place is shut down by the local government. People may be frustrated, but this is an essential security measure, especially when there is water around you. Use proper ventilation when running gas or diesel generators, to prevent carbon monoxide build-up or other breathing hazards. If possible, try not to use any electrical equipment. Make sure the main building circuits are off. Use extreme caution in dealing with downed power lines or other electrical equipment, even if the power is currently off.

Stay healthy during rescue operations

cinnamon powder and salt into this. Toss it.3. Take the eggs in a separate bowl and beat it. Add sugar, vegetable oil, and vanilla essence to this.4. Add Step 2 and 3 to the dry ingredients. Mix it thoroughly. This may take some time if you are mixing with a ladle as the cake batter is very thick, else you can just pop everything in a cake mixer and blend it well.5. Prepare your cake pan by greasing it with butter all over and dusting with some dry flour, If the cake pan is non-stick or silicone, then you can skip this step.6. Add the cake batter to the pan and press it to make the top even.7. Bake it in a preheated oven. Check with an inserted toothpick after 30 minutes and remove it as soon as it comes out clean. At times depending on the heat in the oven the cake may take longer time to cook,8. Let the cake cool completely before you remove it from the pan.

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and hope you enjoy the fruit cake.

Children’s day celebrated on November 14th every year is a celebration of childhood with

fun and frolic. The day commemorates the birthday of Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru and as a tribute to this great man’s love for children it is celebrated as ‘CHILDREN’S DAY’ all over India. . Most schools have cultural programmes for the day and my children also participated in the fancy dress event in their school at Sacred Heart Kindergarten, Thevara Cochin.

My Son Evan dressed up as a policeman and my younger daughter Joan in typical Kerala Christian costume. During his performance he conveyed the duty of a policeman as a message:

Children’s Day in India“I work when you sleepI catch thievesI protect your familyI am a Police Man, jai hind”The students came forward

displaying their vibrant costumes. The few to list out are naval officer, army officer, priest, Spiderman, Superman, king, confident inspector, and many more. The competition brought an amiable ambience and the judges cheered with their applause. It was indeed a mesmerising event which would be etched in our memory for a very long time.

SHE

Mobile tings making the lady to awaken the screen with her beautifully

enamelled finger. I thought it might be WhatsApp message or social updates. Surprisingly, it was a reminder to pay her bills. Just some touch on some apps and payment was done. I thought that might be the end of mobile browsing and time to look up. Still, she bent on to view some attires. I was totally irritated to find her bent on something for so long. After sometime I glanced to find her selecting nail polish colours. It was almost after an hour that I went back to focus my attention to the interesting lady with high-class talking device, then I finally found her face up and smiling. I could hardly stop myself from asking what she does through her phone for so long. She gave me

a wide smile and narrated that she pays almost all the service bills, attire shopping with matching nail lustre that were being exhibited as she was talking. She emphatically shared that she had nail colour app that helps her to decide her choice in line with her skin tone and dress. She gets grocery shop intimations about the weekly discounts making it easier for her to decide on items and day of visit. She also quoted that she decides the dining spot through an app that gives the latest offers and discounts with special attractions available in the town. Then she moved closer to whisper some words that first sounded more like gibberish till she repeated again as SOS whistle, fightback, circleof6, family locator, bsafe and yet more which could be used when traveling alone or in odd situations anywhere. I felt she

had the Tinkerbell’s wand in her tote. She introduced herself and also stated that she was part of an MNC which does not permit its employees to use mobile during working hours. Now I could really understand the reason behind this restriction. I felt she was simply awesome, the hard fact is that almost every youngster on the lane are addicted to these amenities. Ladies, so get update and time to use your magic wand to the best!

SPECIAL DAyS

INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ELImINATION OF VIO-LENCE AGAINST WOmEN NOV 25The United Nations General Assembly has designated November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The premise of the day is to raise awareness of the fact that women around the world are subject to rape, domestic violence and other forms of violence; furthermore, one of the aims of the day is to highlight that the scale and true nature of the issue is often hidden. For 2014, the official Theme framed by the UN Secretary-General’s campaign UNiTE to End Violence against Women, is Orange your Neighbourhood. Historically, the date is based on date of the 1960 assassination of the three Mirabal sisters, political activists in the Dominican Republic; the killings were ordered by Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo In 1981, activists marked November 25 as a day to combat and raise awareness of violence against women more broadly; on December 17, 1999, the date received its official United Nations (UN) resolution.

The UN and the Inter-Parliamentary Union have encouraged governments, international organizations and NGOs to organize activities to support the day as an international observance. For example, UN Women (the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women) observes the day each year and offers suggestions for other organizations to observe it. For 2014, the focus is on how violence cuts across all 12 of the critical areas of concern of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, which turns 20 next year.

ARmED FORCES FLAG DAYDEC 7The Armed Forces Flag Day or the Flag Day of India is a day dedicated to India towards collection of funds from people of India for the welfare of the Indian Armed Forces personnel. It has been observed annually in India on December 7 since 1949. Over the years, it has become a tradition to commemorate this day as an honour to the soldiers, airmen and sailors of India.

Immediately after India achieved independence, a need arose for the government to manage the welfare of its defense personnel. On August 28, 1949, a committee set up under the defense minister decided to observe a Flag Day annually on December 7. The idea behind observing a Flag Day was to distribute small flags to the general population and in return collect donations. Flag Day gains more significance as it considers that it is the responsibility of the civilian population of India to take care of the families and dependents of the armed forces personnel who fight for the country.

The Armed Forces Flag Day is a time for Indians to express its gratitude and appreciation to the current and veteran military personnel of India and to acknowledge those who died in service to the country. On the Flag Day all three branches of the Indian armed forces, the Indian Army, the Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy, arrange a variety of shows, carnivals, dramas and other entertainment programmes to showcase to the general public the efforts of their personnel to ensure national security. Throughout the country small flags and car flags in red, deep blue and light blue colours representing the three Services are distributed in return for donations.

HUmAN RIGHTS DAYDEC 10Human Rights Day is celebrated annually across the world on 10 December every year. The date was chosen to honour the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption and proclamation, on 10 December 1948, of theUniversal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the first global enunciation of human rights and one of the first major achievements of the new United Nations. The formal establishment of Human Rights Day occurred at the 317th Plenary Meeting of the General Assembly on 4 December 1950, when the General Assembly declared resolution 423(V), inviting all member states and any other interested organisations to celebrate the day as they saw fit. The day is normally marked both by high-level political conferences and meetings and by cultural events and exhibitions dealing with human rights issues. In addition it is traditionally on 10 December that the five-yearly United Nations Prize in the Field of Human Rights and Nobel Peace Prize are awarded. Many governmental and non-governmental organisations active in the human rights field also schedule special events to commemorate the day, as do many civil and social-cause organisations. The theme for 2015 is “Our Rights, Our Freedoms, Always”.
