And 100,000 people were immediately obedient. Still. Silent. Stunning. We realised that he was a genuinely humble man who understood something about holiness. We all bow in awe before mystery. As he laughed and said, “Good night and have a good rest”, and turned and walked inside; it felt like your Grandpa was saying ‘it’s been a big day for everyone, and way past all our bed times.’ We are told today that he later refused the papal limousine back to the cardinals’ house. He rode the bus with the rest of the boys. I rode a bus home too, but peace on earth and good will to all can only last so long. My trip was packed, uncomfortable and rocky. I fear Francis’ trip is soon going to be the same. But at least we glimpsed last night that our driver might know the way, because he is, at heart, a fellow traveller. MASS TIMES

ST IGNATIUS Toowong: Weekdays 5.30pm every afternoon; Saturday 9.00am & 6.00pm (Vigil); Sunday 7.00am & 5.00pm.

Reconciliation: Saturday after 9.00am Mass and from 5.15pm to 5.45pm, or by appointment. HOLY SPIRIT Auchenflower: Weekdays 9.00am Monday, Wednesday & Friday; Sunday 8.30am.

On March 13 at 8.06pm the lights went on in the balcony

loggia and the crowd went wild. It took another nine minutes

for a Cardinal, to come out and tell us that Jorge Mario

Bergoglio has been elected Pope Francis.

Francis stood there alone for what seemed like the cruellest

time.

Then we got the buona sera and the Latin Americans went nuts.

The pope began to speak as the Bishop of Rome ‘who presides over all the churches

in charity. It is a journey of fraternity, of love, of trust between us.’ He is no ruler

lording it over anyone. He is a pastor, and a leader who knows that the best way to

get others to follow is to empower them and lead by example. Before he gave us his

blessing, he did something I have never seen a pope do; he asked us to come to

silence and pray for him, and then he bent over in the reverential bow, first and

foremost before God, but also before us in the Square, and before the world. And

100,000 people were immediately obedient. Still. Silent. Stunning. We realised that

he was a genuinely humble man who understood something about holiness. We all

bow in awe before mystery.

As he laughed and said, “Good night and have a good rest”, and turned and walked

inside; it felt like your Grandpa was saying ‘it’s been a big day for everyone, and way

past all our bed times.’

We are told today that he later refused the papal limousine back to the cardinals’

house. He rode the bus with the rest of the boys. I rode a bus home too, but peace on

earth and good will to all can only last so long. My trip was packed, uncomfortable

and rocky. I fear Francis’ trip is soon going to be the same. But at least we glimpsed

last night that our driver might know the way, because he is, at heart, a fellow

traveller.

The Annual Catholic Campaign will support the training &

formation of seminarians studying for priesthood. In recent

years we have been blessed with a full seminary. We have

32 men studying at the Holy Spirit Seminary in Banyo.

People often ask Neville when he made the decision to

become a Priest.

Truth is, for a long time, he was too busy studying and

working to consider a vocation—until the night he felt God

telling him to take a leap of faith.

Neville is nearing the end of his training to become a Priest

for the Archdiocese. Prayer continues to be his rock and he

is grateful to God and the people who support him.

One day Neville hopes to be in a position to help you.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The appeal will also support religious ministries like
Freedom’s Catholic campus ministry & others through the
Religious Ministry Fund.
Grace went to a boarding school in Toowoomba and moved
to Brisbane to study at university.
She suddenly found herself searching for something more
than university classes and partying. Thankfully Grace
met up with a Catholic campus ministry at university called
Freedom. It was a blessing to meet other people who
shared her faith. Grace deepened her faith through the
sacraments, study, fellowship and leadership development.
Grace would not be where she is today without the work of
Freedom. She now has the confidence and skills to live out
her faith, and is excited about what people her age can do
to help make the world a better place.
Your gift to the Annual Catholic Campaign will support the
formation and training of future priests like Neville, & will
make a big difference to other young people like Grace.
Once a year, our Archbishop will ask each of us to make a
commitment to support the work of our Catholic ministries
in the Archdiocese of Brisbane. This effort is a means by
which we can all work together to care for others by sharing
the gifts God has granted us. Please experience the joy of
giving and join us with a regular monthly gift of support as
we work to continue God’s work of spirituality, charity and
education.
Please show you care with a gift to the
ANNUAL CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN.
ST VINCENT DE PAUL, TOOWONG meeting at 7.45pm on Tuesday 18 June, in Horstmann Room. ~ TO MAKE A DONATION please take a marked SVdP envelope from rotary stands & place on the collection plate. Donations are tax deductible.
ST IGNATIUS PEACE THROUGH JUSTICE GROUP. Our next WORKING BEE for the upkeep of the Holy Spirit Church grounds is on Saturday 22 June from 8.30—11.30am. All help is much appreciated. ~ We would also love to hear from anyone regarding Indigenous input into the garden and what would be appropriate. Also, Our next MEETING is on Monday 24 June, 7.30pm in the Horstmann Room. All are welcome.
The theme for World Environment Day 2013 is THINK.EAT.SAVE. EAT. Organisers are suggesting that people make simple resolutions such as only taking/buying as much food as I can eat, having one meat-free day a week, using tap water (where suitable) instead of bottled, composting unusable food. Perhaps we could make our own suggestions -prize of an organically grown pumpkin for the most intriguing suggestion. One suggestion could be having Sunday as an easy-cook day in which you put all your “less fresh” vegetables into a slow cooker (or stove) with herbs /tomato paste / spices for an effortless casserole, or blended for a healthy soup.
COFFEE AND CHAT All ladies welcome for a coffee and a chat on Tuesday 25 June at 2pm, in the Horstmann Room. Come along and meet up with old and new friends.
YOUNG AT HEART Join us on Fri 28 June to attend a movie of choice at the morning session at Regal Twin, Graceville / Eldorado Cinema, Indooroopilly, followed by lunch at a nearby venue. Contact Ursula 3878 9002 or Beryl 3371 5210 for details.
“OPEN THE CHURCH” St Ignatius Church will be open from 2pm Fri 28 June (staying open through to 5.30pm Mass). Come and spend quiet time with the Lord. More watchers are needed - if you are available to help contact Betty Andrews 3870 8867.
MESSAGE FROM SR JEANETTE If you have been collecting “Woolworths Earn & Learn” ‘stickers’ for St Patrick’s School, Allora, please leave them in the marked boxes at both churches & they will be sent onto the school (this promotion has now finished).
~ By the way, Fr Peter visited Sr Jeanette after her operation and found her quite chirpy.
OUR MISSION PRAYER
We, the St Ignatius community, are called to live the good news. We pray that we become the people that Jesus Christ called us to be. We pray that we know the Father, by the power of the Holy Spirit
through knowing Jesus in prayer, scripture and liturgy. We pray that we give hope to others by a practical, personal kindness, affirming each person's dignity, worth and destiny in Christ. May we live out this mission of our Christian vocation in the spirit of St. Ignatius.
A mother goes to her paster and explains that her son seems very interested in becoming a priest. She would like to know what this would require. So the priest begins to explain: “if he wants to become a diocesan priest, he’ll have to study for eight years. If he wants to become a Franciscan, he’ll have to study for ten years. If he wants to become a Jesuit, he’ll have to study for fourteen years.” The mother listens carefully, and as the priest concludes,
her eyes brighten. “Sign him up for that last one, Father—he’s a little slow!”
A Jesuit out for a drive crashed into another car, only to discover that the other driver was a Franciscan. “It was my fault,” each of them insisted—as is only right and proper with religious men. The Jesuit is his concern for the other said, “You look badly shaken up. You could probably use a good stiff drink right now to calm down.” So he produced a flask. The Franciscan drank and said, “Thank you; I feel much better now.” The Jesuit said, “You still look a little rattled, have another drink.” And the Frannie did. “One more,” said the Jesuit, “and you’ll be feeling fine again.” The Franciscan, after taking a drink, said, “But Father, you’re probably shaken up too. Why don’t you have a drink.” “I will,” the Jesuit replied, “but
I think I’ll wait until after the police have come.”
A man walked up to a Franciscan and a Jesuit and asked, “How many novenas must you say to get a Mercedes Benz?” The Franciscan asked, “What’s a Mercedes Benz?” The Jesuit
asked, “what’s a novena?”
