Year 3 MathsWeek 7
Week beginning Monday 11th May 2020
We are learning to:
• interpret and represent the group and item concept in multiplication using models
• interpret and represent the group and item concept in division using models
• Interpret and represent the four rules using bar models
• solve word problems using the four operations
Follow the learning journey on this PowerPoint; it has a break down for each day from Monday to Friday. There will be a task each day
which could be introduced in a video from our YouTube channel, a link to a different website, a worksheet or an open-ended challenge.
If you want to, you could upload your work to Purple Mash so that your teachers can see how hard you’ve been working.
Day 1
Monday 11th May 2020We are learning to represent and interpret multiplication using bar models.
Watch today’s video (click here to access the FOJS YouTube channel) and complete
the task at the end. If you are unable to access the video, see the next slide for a
visual representation of today’s learning and slide 5 for a copy of today’s task.

ABSTRACT
There are 8 scones in each basket
There are 3 baskets
To calculate the total number of
scones, we need to multiply
8 x 3 = 24
(or use repeated addition to
calculate 8 + 8 + 8 = 24)
CPA - Multiplication
Fred baked some
scones. He put eight scones into each
basket. How many
scones did he bake
altogether?
The bar model above is representing this

TODAY’S TASK:Now over to you.
Bar Models
Draw the bar models to represent these questions.
Write the multiplication sentence and calculate the
answer.
1. There are 5 fish tanks in Pets at Home. Each tank
has 9 fish. How many fish are there in the tanks
altogether?
2. Omar buys 11 packets of stickers. Each packet
contains 4 stickers. How many stickers does he
have altogether?
3. Shari makes some cupcakes for the neighbours.
She puts 6 cakes in a box and fills 7 boxes. How
many boxes does she fill altogether?
4. Freddie gets £16 a month for cleaning cars.
How much would he earn in 6 months?
Make your own questions
You can upload your photos to the blog or work folder
5. Write a worded problem for this bar
model and calculate the answer.

model and calculate the answer.

Day 2
Tuesday 12th May 2020We are learning to represent and interpret division using bar models.
Watch today’s video (click here to access the FOJS YouTube channel) where we will
go through some examples from yesterday’s task first.
Today’s task is to continue to develop our division knowledge.

ABSTRACT
There are 15 children
They need to be divided into 3 teams
To calculate – total divided by
number of teams or share the total
between the teams
15 ÷ 3 = 5
CPA - Division
Fifteen children
needed to be put
into 3 teams. How
many children
would there be in
each team?
Divide the 15 counters between the 3 bars (teams)

TODAY’S TASK:Now over to you.
Bar Models
Draw the bar models to represent these
questions. Write the division sentence and
calculate the answer.
1. Tai shares 40 skittles between the 4 people in
his house. How many skittles will they get
each?
2. Marley picks 36 apples. He puts them into 6
bags. How many apples are there in each
bag?
3. Farha has 56 pencils. She puts them into
groups of 8. How many groups of pencils are
there?
Make your own questions
You can upload your photos to the blog or work folder
4. Write a worded problem for this bar
model and calculate the answer.

Day 3
Wednesday 13th May 2020We are learning to recognise and represent the four rules using bar models
Watch today’s video (click here to access the FOJS YouTube channel)
Now that your multiplication recall has improved, you will find you can calculate
division quicker.
Watch the input on bar models and complete the task which will develop the 4 rules.
Comparing bar models
Barton Farm has 294 sheep. Fair Oak Farm has 178 more sheep than Barton Farm.
How many Sheep are there on Fair Oak Farm?
Fran scored 824 points in a bowling competition. Luke scored 157 fewer points.
How many points does Luke score?
Now over to you TODAY’S TASK:
You can upload your work to your work folder or to the blog
Cut up some small pieces of paper (scrap paper is perfect for this). 30 small pieces will be plenty
Task
You are going to make your own worded problems and create bar models using your pieces of
paper for ideas.
WARNING – maths skills and knowledge needed!
When you pick for the multiplication/ division questions, you will have to think carefully. If the
number is divisible (without remainders) you can write a division calculation. If it isn’t, you need to
write a multiplication sum.
If you are finding this too challenging, you can simplify the numbers. Get confident first!
Addition and subtraction questions
You need a pile of names (4 in total)You need a pile of toys or games (4 in total)You need a pile of 3 digit numbers (4 in total)You need a pile of mixed 2 digit or 3 digit numbers (4 in total)
Multiplication and division questions
You need a pile of names (4 in total)You need a pile of toys or games (4 in total)You need a pile of these 2 digit numbers 16, 24, 15, 20You need a pile with a 2,3,4, 5
Turn the pieces of
paper face down so
you can’t see and
pick at random.
Make a worded
problem using the
pieces you chose.
Day 4
Thursday 14th May 2020We are applying our understanding of multiplication and division through fluency, reasoning and
problem solving.
Watch today’s video (click here to access the FOJS YouTube channel) where we go
through the answers of yesterday’s questions.
Now let’s try a combination of fluency, reasoning and problem solving.
Now over to you: TODAY’S TASK Read the questions carefully. Decide on the operation you
need. Draw the bar model and calculate the answer.
1.
2.
(I know it looks a little different to the InspireBar model but you can work it out if you look carefully)
3.
4. While playing a board game, Rob managed to roll
a nine 6’s in a row. What was his total score?
5.
Day 5
Friday 15th May 2020We are applying our understanding of the four rules.
Watch today’s video (click here to access the FOJS YouTube channel) where we go
through the answers of yesterday’s questions and I will be giving you a challenge for
you to apply your multiplication skills.
Please complete this activity and, if you like, you could upload your work to the blog
or pop it in your work folder. We can keep the blog private so that you cannot see
each other’s work or give away the answers.
Have a great weekend! from the Year 3 Team
Now over to you: TODAY’S TASK Challenge Friday
Can you make a loop out of the cards?
Work out the answer e.g.
This means I would need to find 20
to join to it
Continue trying to make a chain
Think about
Which card will you start with?
Does it matter which card you start with?
(Try a few ways if you can)
Can you add some cards to the original loop?
Extension
Make your own loop challenge for someone in your
family to complete or ask them to do one for you
