Lucy and the LeprechaunLucy lived with her grandfather in an old cottage on the edge of the woods. The
cottage was falling to pieces. The windows had cracks, loose bricks hung from
the walls and grass grew in clumps on the roof. Lucy and her grandfather weren’t lazy. For years, they had wished their home
could be repaired. But her grandfather wasn’t as young as he once was. He didn’t
have the strength to haul bricks or balance on roofs. They couldn’t afford anyone
else to help, as all their money went on food.Every morning, Lucy would wake her grandfather with a gentle kiss. “Today will
be a good day!” she would say.“Today will give us luck,” he would reply. Then, Lucy would do her chores before heading into the woods on her way
to school. But, today was different. Today was St. Patrick’s Day and there was a different look in her grandfather’s
eyes. “You must find luck…” was all he said as Lucy headed out of the front door.
Before long, she came across a bag hanging from an old oak tree. On the bag
were the words ‘Catch me if you can’.“Erm, do mind helping me?” the bag said. Lucy jumped with fright. “H… help you?” she said.“Yes,” the bag replied. “I’m stuck!” Then, the bag began to fall! Lucy jumped and caught the bag
before it hit the floor. She gently lowered it, untied the string,
then stepped back. A small man with a pointy red beard crawled out. He was
dressed in green, with a funny hat on top of his head. “You
caught me!” he said. “Thank you! My name is Gorm-Glas. I
am a leprechaun and you have three wishes!”“I can’t ask for any wishes,” Lucy said. “I caught you because
you may have been hurt!” “Then, allow me to wish you luck,” the small man said with
a twinkle in his eye.

Lucy lived with her grandfather in an old cottage on the edge of the woods. The

else to help, as all their money went on food.

“Today will give us luck,” he would reply.
On the bag

British Science Week: Our Diverse Planet
Science is all about studying things to see how they
work. In a science lesson, you might carry out an
investigation.
Science has inspired people to invent lots of amazing
things. Without science, we would not have cars,
computers or even electricity.
What Is Science?
This year, it has been 200 years since the content of Antarctica was first seen
and recorded. Antarctica is a place where many scientists and engineers work.
Antarctica is home to a wide variety of interesting animals including penguins
and seals.
Scientists who work in Antarctica need to wear thick, insulated clothes to keep
them warm. Most people who work in Antarctica live in places called research
stations. These buildings are cleverly designed so that people can live in such a
cold place. Some even have libraries inside them!
Diverse Places
British Science Week is an exciting event which lasts for ten days. Each year,
over a million people across the country take part in different activities.
This year, the theme for British Science Week is ‘Our Diverse Planet’. The theme
was chosen to get people to think about how much variety there is in the world
around them. This could be looking at how animals, plants and people can all
be different.
What Is British Science Week?
Some of the animals which are found in Antarctica have adapted to blend in
with the snowy ground. This is called camouflage. Different
types of camouflage can be seen all over the world.Diverse Animals

The Mystery of the Egg and
Spoon Swindler
KS2 children from Clearlake Primary School had gathered on the school field for the most
exciting event of the year: Sports Day. They had put on their team stickers and stretched their
muscles ready for the challenges ahead of them. However, when Mr Butler opened the bags
of equipment, he noticed a huge problem: the equipment for the egg and spoon race had been
tampered with! The spoons had been replaced by forks and the eggs had been swapped for
spaghetti!
As Detective Chief Inspector on the case, it is your job to find out which participant swapped
the equipment. You have taken down the names and descriptions of 20 children who helped to
set up the Sports Day equipment. There are also five important clues that have been discovered
on the school field.
To crack the case, you will need to solve each clue and check the information with the list of
names. Will you be able to solve the mystery and return the correct equipment before Sports
Day is over?
Good luck!
